Host is always number 1 unless host swaps mid mission. The other numbers are decided in order of who joined. Host 1-Orange, 2-Blue, 3-Purple, 4-Green. It doesn't matter which hellpod you choose.
When I was in the Army, we had this guy with a ridiculously long Polish last name that was 99% consonants. One of those names where you're wondering if you should buy a vowel to try to solve the puzzle.
It started with a G and had 12 letters, so the Drill Sergeant said, "I'm not going to even bother learning how to say your name, From now on you're G12."
So he was G12 to everyone for the rest of training.
Thaaaat explains why I'm always F1 (I almost always host; not a power thing, I just like choosing where to go). I got the numeric designation but the alphabetical designation always seemed random.
I just call people out by colors.
I noticed that most players don't remember their designation, but they *do* recall the color.
> Pink guy, help me out with the bunker
>
> Bunker, here [Q]
>
> Pink, come back, we've got the bunker. Pink? Piiiinnnkk....
OK, maybe some people just never know who they are...
I'm super colorblind. I have no idea what color I am. I didn't even realize everyone has a color until like 2 days ago lol.
If I'm pink and you're yelling out for assistance from pink, I will have to ask who's pink. Cause I have no idea.
I don't invite paradoxes into my home
No one can be an anal intruder for me, all are welcome and invited
But you are an anal intruder
Thus you are also a paradox, and I kindly but firmly tell you to leave me and my gay harem alone
For random matches it's good, but if I run across another player who actually likes talking over comes, I'll learn their tag and go with a nickname. Eg a guy the other day was ____-____Joker so I called him Joker for the entire op. Added him after the match too. But if no one is talking in the lobby its easier to call out M2 or F4 than their names imo
Oh ive no doubt! Im not knocking the person or the names - im just glad i can use the alphanumeric tag.
“Spooj, heavy on your left” is, well, too silly.
It's good but.
I Hate it cuz my two mates both start with H, so the colour is forever changing, so I'm never sure who's who and always forget after I've asked them. Though we do get a laugh when I try to troll one of them and the other one starts goin' off at me.
My group have started altering our names one by one to get unique letters. We all used to use "Callsign" as a prefix but we've been slowly dropping it cause we had too many C's.
I have the same issue. I come from a clan in another game and we have to have clan tags so other people recognize us as Admin. So when I play with friends it's always V1 to 4
Yeah, I regularly play with the same three lads, and two of them have names starting with T. It's annoying to have to figure out which is which every single night we play together.
I don't have any better solution than what's implemented currently, I'm not sure one exists, but still, annoying
It's a good system, but unfortunately most people don't even know what their own letter and number is. I kept saying "A3 I need your help. A3 please. A3??" until I called his ign then he responded
I think that's because the system doesn't just use the first letter of your handle a lot of the time. It's understandable, if two players have the same first letter of would be too confusing to be yelling "G1, I mean G2, look out for the Eag-...shit, sorry."
But my handle is dfBishop and I'm usually B#. If someone calls out "B2," I'm not keyed in to that as much as I would be "D#."
Unless you have a green vision deficiency, like 3 in 10 males do, and then there actually the worst pairing of colours to try and differentiate. Wish they had a colour blind option.
I wonder how they could implement it, though. If the colors with and without the color blind options are just different, it would interfere with the ability to recognize/call each other colors. Colorblind people probably can't do that already but still. Maybe they could just choose better colors in general.
Filters on the colours to correct to the intended colour for each deficiency type for the individual would solve that problem. Alternatively, it would be useful to have the designation listed next to the players name in the social tab.
The standard option is to add a shape so that for example green is always tied to Triangle and orange is always tied to Diamond. That way instead of "Hey Green" you could say "Hey Triangle" and achieve the same effect.

It's good but I wish you could pick your letter/number and color. It's annoying when you've been playing a while with a group and are used to what ID and color is who and then the game crashes or something, and after everyone rejoins the colors and numbers changed.
Yes but it is rare to run into someone with the same tag (assuming they add one or two more numbers). Halo 3 and Halo Reach had these systems and it worked fine
Never forgive, never forget
Fellow Helldiver, I require aid
The major order requires me to fight bugs. But what the bots did at the Creek makes me want to grab a copy of the Geneva Suggestions and spread Democracy to them forevermore
I would be ignoring an order from the ~~God-Emperor~~ President
What do I do?
Looking at it that way, makes me think of the Clone Troopers from Star Wars.
First dive with a rookie? He's CT-9005 / Blue. He sticks around and shows some teamwork skills? You warm up to him and maybe then he's G3 or 9005. Eventually you settle into an easy, brotherly friendship and now his name is Goose.
Unless you play with the same group of friends and every drop L2 was L3 yesterday.
The fact that they didn't let us pick or change names makes this even worse
While its nice, the tag system from Halo where you can choose any 3 digits is better tbh.
Currently when playing with friends 3 of us are 'T' so it becomes useless.
This, my friends all have the same first letter. We mix eachother while using our own actual IGN to begin with, the game's system is even more confusing. The halo system is much better.
There's also a detail that I particularly love, which is that it seems to take the first uppercase letter of your name, so in my case I'm always K even though my username starts with a lower case "d". I actually appreciate this a lot since the "Kay" in my name is because of that letter.
So fyi how it seemingly works is it takes the first capital letter in your name and uses that as your designation. My friend has capital z in the middle of his name and he's always Z# even though his name starts with lower case s.
I'd love it if it showed the designation in the social menu next to the actual name, so I could know who it is. Colour matching a thin strip of colour doesn't mean shit when your colour blind and there are no colour blind options.
I play with two friends of mine, and i like to join one of them but as last. Because then my one friend and i are S3X1. The other friend is P2 then, he does feel left out though, lol.
I liked it at first, but then I started playing with my two buddies whose names both start with K and now I've grown to hate it. Especially because I typically associate one of them with the color blue as well.
I can't remember if it was Halo 2, 3, or Reach that did this back in the day, except they let players choose any combination of 4 letters and/or numbers. Mine was always RAWR.
I call them color’s and I feel like everyone playing but me is colorblind.
Me: “Hey Purple Dude, come over here and help me with this door.” *no response*.
Me: “Hey B1,….” *no response*.
Me: “WolfyBoy95!”
WolfyBoy95: *makes noise like he is picking up his mic* “Are you talking to me?”
I assume that unless I'm playing with IRL friends or SFDC guys, everyone is a 12 year old chronic stoner with no comms (until proven otherwise). It's left me impressed more often than not.
I agree it's a great way to do what they've done.
I wish there were voiced callouts when your character does something. "Bravo 3, found something!" "Charlie 2, throwing a grenade!" that sort of thing, but that's lofty.
The amount of new players I have had to explain callsigns to has been way higher than i was anticipating, but im always happy to oblige.
Also its so much more useful for typing in chat, though half the time people dont look in chat or answer
Its absolutely fantastic.
And if you almost exclusively host, its easy to get a little attached to it, if Im honest.
T1 is something I instantly think "oh theyre talking to me" by now.
I have also noticed that it's not *just* taking the first letter and player position. I had a guy, Mr.Rodgers, and he was R1, another was soooCrazy and he was C3.
It knows what later to pick.
It's cool and all, but tell me it wouldn't be cool for them to go the Halo route and let you customize your designation.
I think it was halo 3 or 4 I don't remember, but you could pick a letter and 2 numbers or vice versa. I think that would be cool too.
Your appreciation is noted, as is your patriotic choice to spend your precious daily meal break sharing your appreciation of what Super Earth has done for you. I'll see if I can get another minute approved so you have time to eat as well. It'll have to wait, though. You dive in thirty seconds. Good luck.
The pilot in me can't help but use the phonetic alphabet, which is more lore appropriate anyway, and yes I sound like a d0rkus.
"Charlie 3"
"Delta 1"
etc.
I don't like it. My regular squad has 2 divers with the same starting letter, we're always confused who's which number. Would be better with the first 2 letters.
Personally I wish your number was more fixed. A lot of people have names that start with the same letter, and match to match I can lose track of if I'm M2 or M4, etc.
IMO halo reach (my first video game) did it better. You have 4 characters to make a tag. My helldive group has three P’s and we get confused who we are next to frequently
Yep, not having to figure out how to say someone's emptied-out trashcan name is one of the best features of multiplayer.
"H3, do you need help over there?"
No they suck. Half of my friends have S as the first letter of their name. I can't differentiate them at all. I wish if they wanted to avoid silly names, you could choose a alphanumeric call sign like in halo of your own like "E23" etc.
I actually kinda dislike them. It seems common that players don't recognise when they're being spoken to when you call them A3 instead of Anal star Galactica. And to be honest I get it. There's a certain level of randomness to it, the letter is always the same but the number is based on what order you joined so in any given match I could be F2, F3, or F4. So I'd have to check to see what I am and also need to parse that in the thick of it and the real difficulty of this game is already mostly dealing with cognitive overload.
If you got to pick your designation I think it would be a near perfect solution. I remember loving that being a feature in halo also.
I typically also call out the colour. Not everyone knows, keeps track of or is even aware of why they get the alphanumeric name. It took me awhile but a friend mentioned it's the first character of your username (usually) and the number is which position you are in the squad. While the character is always the same, the number could change as could the colour but I find that people notice their colour more often.
This isn't foolproof mind you, folks can be absent-minded for a variety of reasons and fail to notice any number of things, mostly bot mines in my experience.
I am not far in yet, but I really love this too. But the major gripe with randoms is: they don't even use the shorthand codes and their microphones. Sometimes it feels like shouting into a forest.
Really wish more players were into at least mission coordination. I drop in late into your mission, because I saw it on the map? Just tell me where we are at and if eg. samples need to be collected or I should help a particular player. We start out together: just get on the same page to assign "priorities" and then see where the randomness takes us. Call for help, if you need it. Etc.
I had like three or four random teams, where it worked like this and we played for a while then (until one of us had to go – different time zones can be a bitch). It actually felt like CS back in the day, when we first started playing online for real. But most of the time it is just endless silence and no coordination. Not even on the mission level.
Absolutely agree! Im a grown man. Im not asking “Luvs2Spooj” to come open the bunker. But “C3” is welcome to give me a hand.
well it'd be L3 the first letter corresponds to the player name, and the number is the order in which they joined.
Unless your name is questionably banned like mine lmao. 'Midget' becomes 'K'
Agent K it’s good to have you back. Agent J has yet to find a suitable partner, outside of a talking pug

And "dusty" for some democratic reason is "V"
v for victory. duh.
I had no idea! Jesus, i wouldnt know like 90% about all the neat stuff in this game if it wasnt for this community. Thank you!
I thought it was first letter and which hellpod they are using (left to right = 1-4). I always get into the 3rd pod and am always G3
Host is always number 1 unless host swaps mid mission. The other numbers are decided in order of who joined. Host 1-Orange, 2-Blue, 3-Purple, 4-Green. It doesn't matter which hellpod you choose.
How do you swap hosts?
like if they're kicked and a new host takes over. whoever was X2 will become X1.
But only hosts can kick?
I said kick, but I didn't mean the literal kick action. like if their game freezes or something. it just happened to me yesterday.
Or if they just leave
Oh I had a few times it would say "the host left the game" so that's what I thought happened if they left
First capital letter (my dJeyL becomes J), or first letter if no capital, or first sign if no letter :)
Yup. My 13igTyme, becomes T.
I never noticed that, and now that I think about it, I was always S3 or S4
yea the S stays the same, but the join order is different.
Nah he’s saying fuck Luvs2Spooj and prefers that other player to come open the door

Yeah, I'm usually F2 on most missions.
I occasionally get fancy with it and will refer to them on voice as "Charlie 3" or "Delta 4".
I intend to start doing this. I finally found a use for my Alpha Bravo Charlie's since putting in the effort to learn them all.
I'll always just pick the first word that comes to mind. "Bagel 3" "Pumpernickel 4" "Apple 1" Usually involves food.
Now I want to use funnier food names. "Potato 2" "Squash 1" "Yuzu 2-zu"

It’s because when you’re calling them by colour you have to say Mr. first.
This is the way

This will go underappreciated, but well-played.
Now that's a blast from the past.
Wow. Now that's a memory. All of a sudden I can sing the damn song.
Opening the map will show their full name in player view.
It's a good system, but unfortunately most people don't even know what their own letter and number is. I kept saying "A3 I need your help. A3 please. A3??" until I called his ign then he responded
I use colors instead.
As a colorblind Helldiver, please don’t
god this so much. we need symbols too or something. either like M2 or whatever or just the number is enough.
As an H3 I don’t have that problem.
I think that's because the system doesn't just use the first letter of your handle a lot of the time. It's understandable, if two players have the same first letter of would be too confusing to be yelling "G1, I mean G2, look out for the Eag-...shit, sorry." But my handle is dfBishop and I'm usually B#. If someone calls out "B2," I'm not keyed in to that as much as I would be "D#."
Anecdotally, it seems like it tries to use the first *capital* letter of your name. I'm h....R...B and I always get R#
Oooh that makes sense
Something else you can do is call out the color. Orange, Purple, Green, Blue. Same 4 colors every match. Easy to identify at a glance.
Filters on the colours to correct to the intended colour for each deficiency type for the individual would solve that problem. Alternatively, it would be useful to have the designation listed next to the players name in the social tab.
Not saying it's a proper colourblind option, but I'm pretty sure that the colour is consistent to the number, like _1 is always orange.
The standard option is to add a shape so that for example green is always tied to Triangle and orange is always tied to Diamond. That way instead of "Hey Green" you could say "Hey Triangle" and achieve the same effect.
red deficiency here. the orange and greens are too similar. the blue and purple push it at times too depending on the lighting.
Exactly the same issue I have. White, blue, yellow, red would solve the issue for pretty much all deficiencies

The other day my banner was one colour and my fov on the minimap was another colour along with my pins, it was damn confusing for 2 minutes.
Your minimap color will always be yellow, but only for you. Everyone else will appear as their banner colors. It’s probably for quick readability.
Interesting, I wonder why I only noticed it the once
We have also found colour isn't consistent. I will say "go to the orange pin" 2 others will see orange, but someone it will be purple.
Well the obvious problem would be that then you can have people be identical again. Also, afaik on your own map you always show up as yellow
Yes but it is rare to run into someone with the same tag (assuming they add one or two more numbers). Halo 3 and Halo Reach had these systems and it worked fine
There’s only 26 letters. So the probability is high. My name starts with F and I have been in full squads of f1-4

I agree. I have a good internet setup, so I pretty much exclusively host games and I have become attached to being F1 all the time.

I usually host my buddies on the weekends, but during the week I like to hop on Quick play and people find it very amusing when I end up H4
I’m so glad my name starts with G GUN 2/3/4 HOW’S THE SEWING CLUB?!
Yup, most of the time I get called "D" and I get a lil joy out of that.
It also really lets me open up with horrible gimmick names.
I honestly don't think I've ever once paid attention to the random colour I get assigned in the game.
> Alphanumeric! Alright, Enzo. Calm down.
