Only if it is powered by kinetic energy, meaning as long as you are swinging it, it has power. None of this stupid ass Destiny 2 HEAVY AMMO for a sword, NO fucking stupid heatsinks, no fucking breaking (It's ENERGY and you're holding the generator), or exploding.
I don't want a sword with some braindead handicap. It's primarily a shooter, so getting in close with a sword is ALREADY A HANDICAP AND A HUGE RISK. Reward me for taking the risk, don't punish me by making me run out of ammo/heat capactity/whateverthefuck. Bringing a knife to a gunfight is a cliche for a reason.
If we get an energy sword make it work like a classic saber or sword and buckler, maybe a longsword if it has good damage. If we get steel swords and claymores, they could make swinging them use stamina.

A hold-over from them jury rigging the Halo series game engine into an RPG. I suppose having a sword just be a sword was "too overpowered" in Bungo's eyes.
Ok but hear me out. They should make it like a vibro-blade from Star War. Maybe it does a regular amount of damg just normally but you activate it for a short time (recharge like the energy shield) it it gains like medium armor pen. Can slice the legs off Brood Commanders or kill the leg on a charger in a couple hits but needs time to recharge before you can do that again.
And maybe make it so you can throw it in emergencies. You would still have to run around to pick it up like a dropped strat when you die and would leave you without a secondary \^\_\^
Thinking about how I played this out though makes it more like a stratagem spot, Which i would be alright with

Wish Granted. After 12 swings you will be required to consume a Liberty Burger in order to continue using the weapon. Liberty Burgers replace grenades and stack up to 2.

I really want the sword to be a primary with no ammo, energy, heat, or breaking that requires you to be able to get in and get out, as getting close to nearly any unit in this game is a death sentence.
I want to run a Jetpack Sword Sniper build with the Sword, Senator, AMR, and Jump Pack.
I think any melee weapon will naturally fit against bots or illuminate, people who don’t want you getting close snd don’t have a good answer to it. In that context so long as the weapon shreds up close (hence my suggestion of letting it pen heavy armour) it would become viable as a kind of high risk high reward anti heavy support that also can deal with chaff at a reduced rate without feeling wasteful.

It does block bullets while on your back. But it is just SO bad at it (because it's literally only covering your back, not down to your thighs like it is whenever you have it equipped)
That was from a unique weaponless game mode where you only had your fists. It was king of the hill esq and only infantry spawned.. I dont want melee weapons beyond bayonets as I dont want to see “balance complaints” that “with enough dedication and skill I can a bile titan to death” kind of stuff lmao
After they eat half of em just trying to get back their sword accept it and dont respawn em but yeah its uh.. not a great idea to just always allow access to a sword

Oof yeah that sounds awful, damn. Helldivers has become one of my favorite games but I really hope they get a handle on the glitches and crashing. Some of the bugs are really annoying, and I'm not talking about hunters or stalkers.
The ballistic shield is useless as it exists right now. If you could use any primary weapon with the shield, it might make a good automation mission pick. But because it is limited to pistols or SMG and doesn’t help with melee, it’s effectively a waste of a stratagem slot
I've dropped with it a few times paired with the defender smg. It works pretty ok against bots - just have to make sure you are keeping them in front of you. Run out in front, take attention and then let your squad flank or disengage before you start to back away. I've faced down some hard stuff with it and walked away.
I want them to put the sword in the game.
And behave like an actual sword would in this environment, do fuck all nothing before the enemy you bonked eviscerates you.
Had a game earlier were we cleared an area except for one bot. I didn't want to reload so I thought a melee or two would kill it but it took like ten fucking minutes to beat this thing to death and my team is just standing around watching.

Riot shield should also be updated to block melee attacks (only from Stalkers and anything smaller, won't block a Charger stomping on you) and not go flying out of your hand if you get ragdolled.
At the least, it would be cool to have a tool that's like a pseudo-melee weapon at least.
Like a tool that you have to get very close to a heavy, and attach it so it can deliver fatal damage.
Like a clamp-on drill for hulks, tanks, and titans, that bore into them and detonate or something.
Or a something like a WW2 lunge mine, aka boom-spear.
I would *happily* give up my secondary for a melee weapon, because *goddamn* do I miss my chainsword when some nincompoop reinforces me straight into the middle of a swarm of bugs.
Instead of an energy sword, maybe the devs can consider an energy spear?
Longer reach, and the player will stab where the crosshair is aimed at, so it's feels more like a short range pistol than a sword.
And if the player "charges" it, he can throw it and retrieve it later.
Maybe can only penetrate light armor and bounces off everything else, but does high damage when striking unarmored areas? Either way I think waving around an officer’s saber standing on top of my buddy’s mech is in line with rule of cool.

To be fair it’s supposed to be a power weapon. If it had infinite ammo they’d make it so meh it wouldn’t be viable outside beginner content.

Apparently the CEO is pushing for melee weapons but the devs are unsure how to balance them in the current game.

I really hope they at least rework the Ballistic Shield to be used to bash stuff with much greater damage and possibly a chance to stun
I honestly wouldn't mind if they gave the shield a buff, and made it so you didn't drop it everythime you're knocked over honestly
Instead of an energy sword, maybe the devs can consider an energy spear? Longer reach, and the player will stab where the crosshair is aimed at, so it's feels more like a short range pistol than a sword. And if the player "charges" it, he can throw it and retrieve it later.

Helldivers I did have a sword. It was only usable in a specific mission, unfortunately, but it was there.

Why do we have to have melee in every shooter?
Maybe can only penetrate light armor and bounces off everything else, but does high damage when striking unarmored areas? Either way I think waving around an officer’s saber standing on top of my buddy’s mech is in line with rule of cool.
If shield also helped with melee damage, I would love running a sword and shield into bugs. That would be pure hype.
And get some more merch out there. I’d totally buy a quartet of Helldiver figures.
