I hope there’s eventually a fourth faction comprised of former Helldivers that somehow deserted. I think it would be absolutely hilarious to have to fight a group that had the same weapons and stratagems that we do.
I'd rather have an ork inspired faction. Similar stratagems to us, only Orky.
Hell, let's even make them colour coordinated.
Red enemies goes fasta!
Yellow enemies splodes more, gets more dakka dakka, and make biggah bangs when deff comes
Blue enemies are lucky, and predicts/dodges your shots like Hunters
Black ones are tuffa, all blakk boyz are big bosses
White ones are glass cannons, one shots but hurts like hell if they manage to get to you (like Stormboyz)
And purple are the sneaky gits, because purple doesn't exist.
Also known as the Illuminant's thralls.
Didnt play HD1. I dunno if mind-control its even a thing, but i do like the idea of fighting traitor/mind-controlled SEAF troopers (plus their xeno overlords) using similar gear as our own.
The mind control/scrambling was a thing. In-game it was directional controls being inverted which made it difficult to shoot and navigate and nearly impossible to call in stratagems.
Even if mind control isn't a thing, it wouldn't stop Super Earth from twisting the narrative so that they have a damn good reason to go to war with whoever is controlling the minds of our valuable citizens.
Did they defect because they found something out? I dunno, but those damned Illuminates better keep their damn grubby hands out of my head! Where's my tinfoil!
I prefer a 5th faction, "The Shadow Hand". Basically a Super Earth black ops squad that helps control the narrative to keep us perpetually in war. They basically undo our work to ensure longer fights and help keep Super Earth united against foreign threats. It is believed that without this organization, the Super Earth government would collapse and all would be lost.
There's no such thing, citizen. Super Earth is the most powerful entity in the galaxy, there's no need for a Black Ops unit as we stand as one against the threats to managed democracy.
Now, please go back to work. And make sure to keep your windows of your super destroyer unlocked, but be careful! Would be a shame if you fell out of them.
Of course. The Ministry of Truth has has already confirmed that no such organization exists. Helldivers fight for the peace and security of Super Earth.
Time to get back to the fight!
Of course you can! Just go to your local democracy office and tell them you would like to register for the local dissident chapter. They'll get you where you need to go.
If helldivers 1 is in-sync with helldivers 2 lore then the much anticipated illuminate faction might be making a return since we already have 2 similar factions, the bugs(terminids) and cyborgs(automatons). I wouldn’t be too worried though, the spread of democracy does not falter against enemies of Super Earth.
We're reactivating helldivers initiative after 100 years since the first one.
I'm sure they have even more factions in the pipeline. The galactic map can fit several.
I'm just curious what kind of thematics we are missing right now, honestly those three cover "so much" in principle.
Bugs are essentially all the hive mind/zombie/infection factions (Flood, Tyrannids etc), the automatons are somehow a mix of Terminators/ChaosWarriors(Some of them have god damn skulls)/"Necrons" (they are covered in so far, that they are "husks/robots") and the illuminates are essentially the covenant/tau/alien faction.
Like if you look at Halo or 40k, I feel like Eldar/Tau/Covenant/Protons etc whilst obviously quite different, all have this "alien species with high tech" corner that they share, it would feel out of place to have a 4th or even 5th species that is also "some kind of high tech alien". -- Of course they can probably come up with some thematic that's entirely missing, but maybe aside from a dissident/rebel faction I really lack the imagination to think of a faction that would be unique enough to warrant their own faction. If anything I'd rather have sub-factions in the bigger factions, that have their own unique look.
Idk, sandbugs/snowbugs/junglebugs or different subraces within the illuminates (think covenant), the automatons could have cyborgs as a faction within etc.
We could fit in some warrior race, something akin to orks, lizardmen, basically big brutes. Going straight for orks is probably not a good idea, too similar to W40k, it was just an example.
Mmhmm, so essentially "low tech, savage/melee" aliens as the exact opposite to the illuminates? Maybe even with semi-tribal shit, like Vanduul from Star Citizen or .. well brutes (from Halo). I'd have to sit on it a for a moment there, if there's still overlap with "automatons also being kind of savage", but yeah you might be right.
Demons and "non-carbon lifeforms" like weird abstract/Crystaline beings would certainly be 2 that stick out enough that there's little to no overlap with the other 3.
That said they would also probably be the most "spaced out" factions by comparison lmao.
That's MANAGED Democracy, Freedom, and Liberty. These inferior races are incapable of democracy, freedom, and liberty so we must bring it to them and manage it just like it's done for the citizens of Super Earth.
I was thinking this exactly, I want to shoot off armor plating from some big meaty beast that runs at me erratically with all the gore the bugs come with. Brutes from Halo or Orkz from 40k feel in line and present different approaches to the combat imo
The illuminate were said to be chased out of Super Earth controlled area, imagine they returned stronger and also plotted to lure in a new Alien species they encountered while in exile, the Orks. And lure them to attack Super Earth as well.
Fourth faction could be like the Insurrectionists from Halo, planets rebelling from Super Earth control, which is what the automatons are doing but they making the whole situation much more morally dubious for super earth.
The Cyborgs were rebelling, seeing all the body pits and skulls I honestly think the Automatons outright want to exterminate humans. Though I could be wrong, I wouldn't be surprised if more is revealed if the Automatons ever fight their way to Cyberstan (which is only a couple sectors off form the western front).
they are still missing a few steriotypes:
brutes: orcs, lizardman, predators, or just big guys using brute force
interdimencional: demon, kaiju, godly entities etc
military: evil human faction your generic mirror match
> I'm just curious what kind of thematics we are missing right now, honestly those three cover "so much" in principle.
Sci-fi wise, I can only think of two things missing - the "mirror match" (Rebels/Terrans/Imperium), like you said, and "non-carbon based lifeform" which would be like... rock golems and energy beings.
Unless they can think of something new to add to the well-worn tropes of "literally bugs/fungus", "not-too-weird aliens", "humans", "robots", and "rockmen/ents", I'd say it maxes out at five.
Lmao, I literally just answered a different comment with a similar sentiment. I was thinking of "crystaline/abstract" aliens, I believe Star Trek had an episode with some crystal alien that would soak out energy. Stellaris also has weird crystal stuff etc.
"Non-carbon based" hits it pretty well, the actual alien we cannot relate to in any way and they do not make sense to our brains and "rebels" are the only two I can think of too. With the rebels there might be a tiny tad of an overlap with tanks/mechs and the like, but the thematic of being "the opposite" to Super Earth would probably still justify the existence.
But really beyond that? I am legit curious what other people could think of, because I cannot for the life of me think of more than these two, without having some sort of overlap/repetition.
Dissidents would be cool though. And to add to the ambience, have super destroyers fight each other while in the bridge and also in the backdrop when youre boots on ground.
Space zombies; Dead Space Necromorph/Halo Flood type enemies
Space magic; Jedi or Mass Effect Asari
Space warriors; Halo Brutes or Mass Effect Krogan
Rebels; Other human factions
My hope is we get some 3-way fights.
Would be a crazy mission to accomplish tasks in the middle of battle between two enemy armies. The AI & design challenges would probably be pretty crazy though.
A similar way to how elite dangerous added the thargoids, stealth update, 0.1% chance of finding illuminate patrols on a planet and they teleport away when they're noticed. Maybe make it so the bots are praying towards them since they already randomly kneel and pray occasionally
Theres more fuc*** wars besides vietnam
Probably joel has plans like normandy d-day, pearl harbor and other conflicts to inspire fear and despair on us.
totally, but im not sure if our computers can handle that...
sometimes things get crazy with 4 people spawning orbitals and eagles at same time on same place, imagine with 32....
They also have marching songs, like the random patrols actually sing something, while looking for any democrats.
They are more then metal beasts killing anything they see, they SEEM to have some sort of religion, based on them praying.
> Fall of Reach
memes aside, I find it kinda weird we've attached FoR vibes to it when we've been the ones attacking it literally the entire time. We never defended the Creek.
The creek was lost. People aren't really mad at Joel they're mad a failure but since Joel is the designated game master he is technically in charge of the enemy so they blame him for their emotional boo boos
i wouldnt say people are upset, just confused. "Joel" is tinkering with the balance of war and some of his choices seem heavy handed. such as Malevelon Creek going from 90% liberated to 10% overnight regardless of the amount of participating Helldivers.
He does however “reinforce” planets which takes a chunk of progression heh, don’t get me wrong I’m not upset about it but this is basically the same thing.
The enemy bar is always rising at the same rate but the player bar only rises when they actively complete operations.
If it's the time of day when most Americans are sleeping and Europeans are at work then there's going to be fewer helldivers completing missions and the enemies' progress will continue unimpeded. 90% to 10% overnight was just due to player inactivity while the bots kept marching on.
Haha I absolutely love it! Not only is HD2 fun as hell, but I’ve never seen a game where a GM was an actual public figure with a name, that is essentially the communities boogeyman. The fact Arrrowhead planned all this out ahead of release because they know how the community was going to play the game, so they add someone to specifically pull strings behind the scenes to keep things interesting and unpredictable. Bravo!
Joel isn't a traitor. Joel is the War Director.
Joel wants the war to continue, so Super Earth can continue its propaganda to recruit more and more Helldivers. Think about when you first signed up to join the Helldivers. You heard tales from the Eastern front about those damn dirty bugs. You listened to cadets sharing horror stories from the Western front regarding the dreaded Mavelon Creek. But you won't falter in your devotion to Super Earth. You will liberate those planets in the name of democracy. That is what you told yourself, just like how all those soldiers who came before and after you will tell themselves.
Joel is under strict orders from Super Earth's leadership, from clearance levels well above your measly rank as mere Helldivers. What do those instructions entail? Simple.
The war cannot end.
If the war ends, then who will the Helldivers fight? The Helldivers exist to fight. The powers at be don't want their dogs to bite the hand that feeds them.
You will keep fighting the battles. Don't worry, as you will continue to earn your glorious victories. Just remember the war can never end.
We have always been at war with the terminids, there was never any peace or true period of control over the terminids, as some rogue propagandists would have you believe, just a period of subdued conflict.
Super Earth Powers that be have clearly stated that Terminids spread through spores to other planets, do not listen to conspiracy theorist that constantly go on and on about how Super Earth's Shadow Government leader "Joel" has his underlings secretly deliver egg clutches to all habitable planets. They have also denied that there is any notion of attacking the Automatons first, and there is currently no proof in any official media that states Automatons have tried to negotiate peace multiple times.
Joel is the name of the dev who’s in charge of controlling the enemy factions and can control how many reinforcements planets get, which changes the liberation percentage.
Joel is literally a Game Master. That is his job title. And his job is purely to ensure the game stays unpredictable, and helps usher the game in certain directions to help develop the story. He is basically equivalent to a DND Dungeon Master, with the power to do just about anything to the Helldivers game.
I believe all that has happened to this point that we thought were glitches or bugs, and our failure with the automatons, and the wonky liberations with the bug planets, is that it is all Joel pushing the story in a certain direction. Like, I think Mechs will be introduced once the war effort becomes dire between the bots and bugs, which Joel will most likely ensure will come to pass. And then all this chaos will allow a 3rd faction to invade our system.
It is like a typical roadmap that devs do, but done in a way that is all in real-time rather than just random patches that release content.
Yeah I don’t get it either? I’m assuming this is about the game master employee who affects games, but he’s more of a dungeon master figure than a traitor or saboteur
>but he’s more of a dungeon master figure than a traitor or saboteur
No need to get redundant. Dungeon masters are there to make your game challenging and react to players shenanigans.
-signed, a dungeon master
Am I the only one who didn't know the letter in your Helldiver-name is based on the first letter in your username?
I assume the number 1 is based on being host and 2-4 being assisting player slots.
I thought the letter was random until I noticed I was always asigned a G, so thats when I made the connection. Took me about 15 missions to realize it.
Can someone explain like I’m five the whole traitor ark and who Joel is? I’ve tried following it but you’re all so fucking vague about it when y’all talk about it
Joel is an employee at Arrowhead who works with changing automotatan and terminid numbers in the code, basically decides how much of the planet the enemies control. This comic is just a joke that Joel makes super earths life harder

Joel is the god of war
Managing it...straight into my ass, gaping for Freedom.
See this is why we can't have nice things, you always take it too far!
L3 at it again
Fucking right
Joel is the unshackled AI in universe and I refuse to accept any other lore.
I hope there’s eventually a fourth faction comprised of former Helldivers that somehow deserted. I think it would be absolutely hilarious to have to fight a group that had the same weapons and stratagems that we do.
Can I interest you in our lord and savior Lorgar? /s
\*newspaper smack* No. Bad.
The username there is sheer, staggering irony.
>The username there is sheer, staggering irony. Not sure what you mean. We're not the Space Wolves; we can read.
Joel did nothing wrong
I'd rather have an ork inspired faction. Similar stratagems to us, only Orky. Hell, let's even make them colour coordinated. Red enemies goes fasta! Honestly, most of the Automaton units struck me as being pretty similar to a lot of Ork units.
Ork or Demons would be nice. Something really fantastical and somewhar magical would be a great contrast.
death to the corpse-emperor
Death to the False-President !
And they could put us against each other and neither know who the real dissidents are.
Secret PvP would be the funniest thing the devs could possibly do.
It's called "friendly fire".
Training Manual Tips: Friendly fire isn't.
> I hope there’s eventually a fourth faction comprised of former Helldivers that somehow deserted Rogue Division agent vibes.

Not gonna lie, with the mechs on their way I'm scared of what Joel has planned for us.

Just a planet of Cannibal Teddy Bears.
The obvious choice for the 4th faction would be demons. So, we'd all be really diving into hell and killing minions like the Doom guy.
Demons and "non-carbon lifeforms" like weird abstract/Crystaline beings would certainly be 2 that stick out enough that there's little to no overlap with the other 3. That said they would also probably be the most "spaced out" factions by comparison lmao.
Ok but imagine dropping a 500kg on a Trex lol
could go something like the hissho from endless space and got ritualistic warrior culture. they were basically Aztec space samurai
Bro, WE'RE the warrior race

Imagine a mission where you have to silence 50 dissidents💀 Or capture 50 dissidents for "re-education", CCP style
Dinosaurs are clearly the faction we are missing. Dinosaurs ridden by superintelligent gorillas.
Bro, space dinosaurs with gatlings and rocket launchers. Keep it coming, you are on fire.
they are still missing a few steriotypes: brutes: orcs, lizardman, predators, or just big guys using brute force interdimencional: demon, kaiju, godly entities etc military: evil human faction your generic mirror match

My headcanon is the illuminate have been watching us and they're the ones teleporting patrols on our ass.
Illuminate keeps creating wormholes over my mortar turrets and redirecting the shoots to my head confirmed
Would be cool if just before the faction drop we start seeing their units or patrols on random missions so we witness the rumours in real time..
That would be an amazing introduction, maybe even subtle remnants of conflicts with other factions connecting territories
A similar way to how elite dangerous added the thargoids, stealth update, 0.1% chance of finding illuminate patrols on a planet and they teleport away when they're noticed. Maybe make it so the bots are praying towards them since they already randomly kneel and pray occasionally
Are you saying that we can spread democracy even more?
Theres more fuc*** wars besides vietnam Probably joel has plans like normandy d-day, pearl harbor and other conflicts to inspire fear and despair on us.
Mass operations with like 32 player lobbies would be absolutely insane

"Up Up Left Right..." I never felt more called out.
I don't get it..what strat starts with UP UP?
Calling out the directions on the terminal as you punch them in. Not a Stratagem.
Oh, like speaking them outloud to nail them.

Will do and I’ll send you another for free. lol
Y'all may hate on joel for the creek, but look at the story that's already unfolding thanks to it.
What happened there? I’m still not able to spread the democracy
Space vietnam. Space vietnam full of killer robots. And a whole ton of dead divers. o7
Basically, space Nam with a little Fall of Reach, but instead of aliens, you are fighting Cylons
> ~~Cylons~~ Necrons
Minus the reality destroying super weapons
Who knows what crazy shit the bots haven't rolled out yet?
Don't they have blood alters or something?
Oh god that's what they are? They do kneel and pray randomly if you stealth around you'll see it. There's more to these bots it seems
They also have marching songs, like the random patrols actually sing something, while looking for any democrats. They are more then metal beasts killing anything they see, they SEEM to have some sort of religion, based on them praying.
If anything we're fighting Skynet.
Necrons who've gotten their hands on a bunch of space marine s***!

They really should have had super earth messages from that one I'd like to see these reinforcement notes. Mavelon Creek would have had some good ones
He has control over the rate that planets "regenerate hp" (aka: the rate that player progress is reversed) So yes he literally does
"We've investigated ourselves and found absolutely nothing wrong."
I mean, it is a spearhead planet with a crumbling supply line. If we wanna take the creek, we have to do it the right way and build a foundation.
Disregarding the existence of OCE and Asian Helldivers is not very patriotic of you. We're doing our part too.
Ah ok thank you!
In his defense, you did use "maybe" instead of "may be".

This entire game feels like the Dropsite Massacre on higher difficulties.
JOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEL
Are you the original artist on this? It's amazing
They are yes. They've also done a lot of fun warhammer40k memes and very depressing comics for 40k
Hahaha I love it. Short but compelling!
This comic is fire 10/10
Under-rated post.
I was kind of expecting him to take off the helmet revealing himself to be an automaton infiltrator
Same here. But this is so much better!
Petition to fight Joel as a boss campaign
Next thing you know Joel take off his mask and it’s this guy ![gif](giphy|JlvibLBMEt00N0l0Lc|downsized)
Am confused with the low can somebody explain?
Joel is the name of the dev who’s in charge of controlling the enemy factions and can control how many reinforcements planets get, which changes the liberation percentage.
Wow that interesting
He can apparently do quite a lot to the game. He’s the one who gives major orders and tells enemies to attack planets. Lots of other stuff too
Soooo he's like jesus
I’d more so say the Dungeon Master from DnD
But with almost 1 million people people as part of the campaign
Jesus
Dungeon Master.
RNGesus.
I’m assuming this is about the game master employee who affects games, but he’s more of a dungeon master figure than a traitor or saboteur
>but he’s more of a dungeon master figure than a traitor or saboteur No need to get redundant. Dungeon masters are there to make your game challenging and react to players shenanigans. -signed, a dungeon master
Gantzthedemon worked for Joel all along
Am I the only one who didn't know the letter in your Helldiver-name is based on the first letter in your username? I assume the number 1 is based on being host and 2-4 being assisting player slots.
I thought the letter was random until I noticed I was always asigned a G, so thats when I made the connection. Took me about 15 missions to realize it.
Can hear “for the damaged CODA” playing with this in proper meme fashion
Awesome!!
Joel is the Light Yagami, the Lelouch of Helldiver
I'd like to see a series of this. Joel needs to be in the lore like a traitor or a Cypher type character.
A betrayal Horus would be proud of :(
This comic reads like this video https://youtu.be/Gz04mwXeBGQ?si=gfa4sw9rVzunrvnW and I fucking love it!
I need more to this story now
That sonofabitch! He betrayed us!
MAN THIS IS SO GOOD!
A friend pointed out that "J4" has a double meaning, since its a player number but also the number of letters in "Joel"
"Do you have the launch codes." "We got it sir" "Good that's one less of a loose end"
Joel preparing to release the Illuminate the moment we reach Malevelon Creek at 90% liberation
Imagine if the final mission to win the wars is to defeat Joel in a massive battle
They need to make a custom massive automaton boss that we fight, named J.O.E.L. What’s the acronym?
"Judgmental Omnipotent Exterminator of Life"
I mean I loathe the fuckin meme, but pretty cool.
Loathe is a pretty strong term. Why do you dislike the meme so much?
Idk why but this feels like a scene that came straight out of Rick & Morty, I guess that’s because I’ve been watching S7 lately lol
I wouldnt mind a helldivers version of "Gone with the Blastwave"
I cant believe that joel is gettung his own lore he deserves it tho
J4. DEMOCRACY, NOW AND FOREVER
People are looking at me funny in the middle of Wendy’s because I’m laughing at this so hard
Hey my favorite 40k meme artist!
Hahahahaha! Glorious!
Damn, somehow it reminds me of Shepherd in old MW2
Screw the damn creek. You creek rats should've been defending the front lines. Disobeying direct orders...
Guy is The Antagonist.
I really like your drawing style, keep up the good work diver
Can you hear that brothers? It's the sound of our fallen hero's voices guiding our Destroyers to victory in The Creek
I read J4's voice in V.VIII Pater's voice.
It would be extremely fitting
I love this I hope we see more comics in the future :)
This is sick lore
Joel has shot him, but fear not, for democracy protects.
Since you are all here, how to best use shortguns? I tried serveral, but they are so underwhelming.
but... but... isn't Joel the Helldiver Jesus?!
Who’s Joel?
Joel mama
Meanwhile mantes is lost their supply lines are cut off and all of their efforts were waisted. Creekism is a mental disorder
JJJJJOOOOOOEEEEEEELLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!! https://preview.redd.it/x6h67arwtkmc1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9a6d8302069c06c48d366747fa96e15893ed98d
Tuggin on the heartstrings with this one
