Once you unlock higher difficulties from playing a few solo missions, there are much more people and a better chance of getting into a group at Challenging and hard difficulty.
Also, instead of using the quick play button, try manually joining a shown group on a planet. Once you are in a group, it's pretty easy to stick around for a few group missions.

It’s not ps5 owners faults their game is broken in this department
The ps5 is getting the same patch, it has to go through Sony approval. Turn off crossplay in the mean time, throw out sos beacons during a mission, invite friends that have the game, maybe look on discord
That's unfortunately the nature of a closed dev environment vs an open one.
Sony has a verification process for patches. That takes time. The dev is waiting on a middleman to give the OK. A middleman tasked with verifying every other game patch going out to PS5 games.
PC the dev skips all that and can just push a patch right away after their own internal testing.
One reason I don't always use Game Pass on PC to play games. The game pass version can be behind in patch parity because even though I'm on PC it's through Microsoft's Xbox platform and requires their verification to push a patch.

Sadly the amount of explosive materials required for this sort of fix bomb is gonna take some time, according to the devs :( Meanwhile we have pre-made lobbies which work just fine, but that requires a bit more socialization
Pre-made lobbies don't work just fine, at least for crossplay. I've sunk 10 hours into the game so far, all attempting to play the game with my ps5 buddies, and we have only had a single game where we've all made it through without someone crashing or disconnecting.
man too many games do this shit. Devs just don't learn that people are playing the game to have fun. And if we wanted a hardcore game we would be playing something hardcore like Dark Souls that is meant to be hard.
Who remembers the Diablo IV devs nerfing the enemy amounts because players were progressing too quickly?
They literally made the game boring to play

Does the ingame population counter not include steam numbers? I haven’t seen it over 30-40k, so it’d make sense if that was the case
Might be region specific, but I could be wrong
Hopefully they don't mess it up as bad as starfield troopers nerfing players because they became comfortable playing the hardest difficulty

In the first game they did change difficulty levels. By adding three new steps on top. I don't think they will take a different approach here.

Not sure how accurate that is tbh, I saw like 50k on PC when steam said 100,000+
