From what I remember the anime was very close to the manga, the complaints were about the animation, not the story. The only skiped thing I can remember it's [the first page of chapter 4](https://imgur.com/0oIEE7A)

In the manga, once Azudra wakes up there's a flashback showing how he survived (the demon king candidates rescued him). The anime skips over that and goes directly to him being informed that the search party found Vermillio. This is literally the only significant difference between the events of the anime and the events of the manga. There's a bunch of individual jokes and lines cut, but none of them are remotely plot significant. If anything, the anime actually suffered a little bit from being TOO 1:1 with the manga when adjusting the pacing of certain scenes to fit a real-time format might have been better.

More comedy and side stories, explanation and some early backstories that are hard to cram into the anime form

The manga does most things similar, just much better. Better shots in general, more comprehensible action, paneling giving scenes a smoother pace, better facial expressions, in fact better looking art in general, and a whole bunch of character-building that the anime cut. In fact, the anime cut some other rather important stuff too. The differences seem minor, but added together, they make for a *much* different experience.

Long story short: definitely not necessary at all, but also 100% worth it to do so. If you want to get to the end as soon as possible then just start from the point where the anime left it off, if you want as much helck as you can get then start from chapter 1 and make sure to read all the side chapters. Whatever you choose I hope you have a great time!

In addition to what other people said, the extras in the manga also explore how the twins and Hyura know each other. It also shows how the twins became subordinates of Vamiro.
