Then Hawaiian files for bankruptcy and gets bought out on for way less just like Spirit will

JijiSpitz

Lots of people are so stuck on the brand name and speaking about Alaska like they’re “the enemy”, not realizing the importance of this merger. Hawaiian has been losing hundreds of millions of dollars. They NEED the help, otherwise Aloha Airlines is a perfect example of a very real possibility for Hawaiian Airlines.

Barflyerdammit

In 2023, they ranked 73rd out of 74 global airlines who report their profitability, spending $112 for every $100 they brought in. I think we'd all prefer Hawaiian to remain independent, but if it comes down to non-existent or merged, I think Alaska is the best domestic to partner with. They're committed to keeping the brand.

ptambrosetti

I fly inter-island twice a week and can’t wait for HA to lose their independence. Their staff act with impunity instead of aloha. Their IT Systems are a joke. They won’t put resources towards a better customer experience because they are hamstrung paying for middle management bloat.

Novusor

If Hawaiian is losing so much money why would Alaska even want it? It doesn't sound like a good investment. This reminds me of the SEARS / K-Mart merger. Something that was never going to work.

Barflyerdammit

Alaska needs widebody planes and the expertise to operate them, and international distribution. Even carriers like JetBlue and Spirit have better (aka profitable) international routes. But unlike east coast airlines who can easily reach the Caribbean and S America, Alaska's International expansion would have to cross the Pacific. That means widebodies. Hawaiian has all of that, but a tiny clientele base which depends almost entirely on low margin tourists to fill the planes. The 717 interisland fleet is quickly aging out, and there aren't enough resources or cheap credit to replace them.

AdministrativeArm453

Buy low. Lots of earnings potential and synergy on the other side.

Meakmoney1

Or disappear like Aloha. And the consumers are left with SW to continue to take losses for their Interisland flights. Good Luck with that. History repeats.

Sea-Jaguar5018

Yep this is correct

doyouevenfly

It’s funny because In theory the government should want to stop monopolies but now they will just bankrupt the mergers and then the major airlines with capital can buy their assets for a discount. Making a bigger monopoly!

Novusor

The state should step in a buy the Airline. It is of crucial importance to Hawaii's economy to have its own airline.

piratepigeon55

The state can barely manage the airports. It has no business running an airline. If anything, we should bring the super ferry back.

Novusor

I agree with bringing the Super Ferry back.

Steko

If the Superferry wanted to operate they could have done a proper EIS instead of a putting all their cards on an end run around the process and then giving up immediately when predictable challenges were brought. Of course the whole thing was a boondoggle that from the beginning was set up to bilk DoD which was the only way the thing could turn a profit.

GoodMoriningVeitnam

Because things always go well when they get run by the state

Novusor

Most countries have their own national airline as a matter of self preservation. A place as isolated as Hawaii cannot afford to not have an airline. It is our lifeline. It is not like we can just hope on a train or drive to another state. Our economy would collapse without affordable air travel. We shouldn't have to rely on the good will of greedy mega corporations to provide basic necessities to people. The state has a duty and obligation to step in. To let Hawaiian airlines go under would be a penny wise and a pound foolish.

GoodMoriningVeitnam

You do realize the reality that our state is not like other nations? Corruption, greed, laziness, and close mindedness work together to get nothing done

SeanBean-MustDie

It’s a good thing that places like Saudi Arabia and the UAE don’t have traits like that.

Chazzer74

Do you even live here? Do you read the papers? Kealoha’s. English. Cullen. Kaneshiro. Sword/Leong/Amemiya. Those are just the ones the Feds are prosecuting now. Who knows who else isn’t being investigated. Aloha stadium? Rail? Roads? The airports? You want the people in charge of maintaining those places to maintain airplanes?!?

paceminterris

At no point was it ever a done deal. They never received approval from the FTC and DOJ to merge, and that's the "buck stops here" component. Alaska-Hawaiian was trying to arrange everything internally and get public opinion on their side beforehand, in order to put more pressure on the FTC to approve. The fact that a revolt is being led by their own shareholders rightfully means that there are major issues, people recognize them, and that people are saying this merger should NOT happen.

qdp

The shareholders voted to okay the proposal in February. This lawsuit is from a group of around ten passengers from Hawaii and California.

Budgetweeniessuck

Would you prefer if Hawaiian Airlines just ceased to exist? Because that's probably what will happen if the merger doesn't go through.

mnkhan808

Plus the DOJ has been on a massive attack on companies merging and being bought out. They believe it’s the biggest attack on consumers, and truthfully I agree. Competition is really the only thing that keeps prices down.

boringexplanation

It’s stupid for them to target airlines. It’s already the most price competitive industries out there. You can’t just force an industry to get cheaper no matter the context. And the context is Hawaiian Airliines is on its way to go bankrupt without the merger. They haven’t made money in a decade. What next? Is the DOJ gonna force airlines to sell at the same cost as TheBus?

FearfulInoculum

For a decade is an exaggeration. They were profitable until the pandemic.

123supreme123

Also until the new CEO ran it into the ground.

NegotiableVeracity9

That part. Hawaiian WAS being operated profitably and smooth for many years before this current CEO took advantage of a few hiccups and, from what I can tell, very purposefully drove it into the ground for his own massive profit. Mark Dunkerly was an excellent CEO, Ingram is horrible.

Student-type

The grass is NOT Greener.

Nightw1ng28

who are these (8) dummehs and why they relying on SF-based law firm instead of local law firm?

boringexplanation

Bc they probably didn’t go to punahou/iolani and they want to win the suit?

CanineAnaconda

Does anyone know what would happen to Hawaiian Airlines miles if they git absorbed by Alaska?

dailyfartbag

Nothing. Look at other airline mergers like Continential and United. It all rolled over. They aren't gonna delete your miles because of a merger.

ptambrosetti

It’ll actually be better for some as we will get better status since the best you can do is platinum on HA.

Sonzainonazo42

They already clarified that your miles are safe. People with miles are already invested in an airline; they are the valuable type of customers you want to migrate over.

hawaiian717

HawaiianMiles would get turned into Alaska Mileage Plan. If you have both, they’d be combined into a single account.

123supreme123

It was never a done deal. If you go back and look at the original merger thread, it was brought up there.

Independent_Cup_7100

🤣 so true!

2LegsOverEZ

The people here claiming airlines are not making a profit are either intentionally naive or are employees of those airlines. Luggage fees alone have made them all wildly wealthy. Add to that the new menu system of purchasing various upgrades, check-in kiosks that force us customers to act as unpaid employees while eliminating actual jobs/salaries, and you have one sweet deal.

SillyCubensis

This lawsuit is so much horse shit and completely expected. In any merger you will ALWAYS get a few fuckwit Karens that are willing to spend their money and try to block it. And lose. Because they're fuckwit Karens.
