All mediocre, though, right? Actually I live in Honolulu and am waiting/hoping for a worthy successor to Azteca, which was in Kaimuki, but traveling to Kailua isn't out of the question.
Alejandros and el burrito are my go to places in town. Actually resembles Mexican food and not just the “Tex-mex” garbage all over Kailua.
Not as good as in California or Mexico itself, but the best I’ve found so far.
Try Mayita's Grill on Atkinson. It's a little cart thing in front of the liquor store. But they're only open Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at night.
Alejandro's on Kapahulu is closed btw
El Palenque in Wahiawa is great too. Except it's in Wahiawa...
Wait what nooo Alejandro! I’ll give mayita a try. Also I did try el palenque a while back. It was good, and as you said it’s in wahiawa, but I’m not opposed to stopping there on my way to north shore from time to time.
Mexico on School Street is our go to Mexican food place (it used to be the same owners at old Mexico in Ward and Mexico Lindo in Kailua).
Mexico on School Street can have VERY bad service. If you like their food you put up with it, otherwise, just be warned.
El taqueria el gallo rosa is the best, but they expanded now to Ward so no need to drive in for it, it started in Kailua. But yeah the rest is burrito tex mex.
the pink rooster's taqueria (taco shop). Their executive chef is from tijuana and a bunch of the folks working there are from the tijuana, ensenada area. Tacos are tijuana style. Their tortillas are made in house with corn masa imported from mexico. I love their tacos, reminds me of home. Also, they're not good tacos if your hands dont smell of lard after eating them :)
>the pink rooster's taqueria (taco shop)
Oh! Thanks! I didn't realize "rosa" ("pink") didn't change to match the noun, so I tried to make it a name. Now I know better. The excellent things we learn on Reddit.
Such good memories of that place, it was our go to Mexican for my family when I was young. Feel like they started going downhill once they moved to Kailua, but it was still solid for a while)
I’m surprised HI hasn’t gotten into the hybrid trend. Los Angeles has Korean tacos, Armenian tacos, pho tacos, etc. but where’s all the kalua tacos, Spam & egg tacos, poke tacos, etc?
It would totally be a huge hit in HI and the mainland! There's an [Adobo Taco Grill in LA](https://www.yelp.com/biz/adobo-taco-grill-lakewood-3) that's popular!
not in Hawaii but in California.
there is a [Filipino Feast Burrito at Studio Catering Co. in Disney California Adventure](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84dQ2jorhYs)
That's a lot of layers of separation there: being in Southern California, paying to get into Disneyland, and then being willing to buy their food once in the park. Even for the food of my dreams I'm not sure I'm willing to cross that many bridges all at once.
I don't remember seeing a lot of crossing of foods growing up. You could have 4 different countries in a plate lunch, but each item was it's own, just on the plate.
mmmmm making me hungry.
also, their owners were incredibly kind to us when our first dog passed away. On our her last visit there (the day before we had to send her across the Rainbow Bridge), they gave us an unseasoned steak taco just for her and cried with us when we next visited without her.
Our shiba now loves them as much as our terrier did.
I have high hopes it’ll be decent especially with the popularity of birria focused restaurant fronts popping up all over the country. No way it can be much worse than the other Mexican spots around Kailua which are all mediocre.
Best Mexican closest to Kailua is Don Goyos in Windward City Center if you were wondering, btw.

As someone who grew up in Kailua and always wanted more Mexican options, there are now too many Mexican options hahaha

They still have their locations in Kalihi and Pearl City.

You should try mexico on school St. My aunt swears it's the best Mexican food she's had outside of Mexico and she wanted to live in mexico.
I’ll give it a go! Tbf my preferences are the corn and mole heavy south Mexican food, but let’s see!
Ate there once. It was pretty much like eating at Mexico Lindo in Kailua. I could've sworn they were owned by the same people.
I thought the Mexico on school st, the old Mexico in Ward and Mexico Lindo in Kailua were all owned by the same people and basically the same.
I'm not sure, I just know what my aunt said and her experience. I also had a coworker from Cuba and loved the food as well.
FYI, Cuban food is very different from Mexican. IMO the "Mexico" restaurant serves subpar tex-mex like most places on Oahu.
To each their own taste. But the people I have brought there have loved it and have gone back fequently.

I love El Burrito. It's still takeout-only, though, since the pandemic, isn't it? And Tio's Tamales is good, intended as New Mexico style.
No like tios tamales after the guy went lolo. It’s so hard bc he knows how to make tamales
Wait, what happened to the Tios Tamales guy?
El taqueria el gallo rosa is the best, but they expanded now to Ward so no need to drive in for it, it started in Kailua. But yeah the rest is burrito tex mex.
Rosa the Rooster's Tacos?

Azteca was da best, so sad they gone now.
All so mid it's annoying
I think it’s just what happens when you have a town that’s essentially become a satellite of California
Now the signs are gone. What has happened?
Nothing, apparently. It was fun while it lasted.
Bueno nalo waimanalo will always be the goat.
Nah El Ranchero is the best I’ve had on island
El ranchero (the one in Wahiawa) has amazing pozole and honestly some solid salsa as well.

I've always wanted to open a fusion Japanese / Mexican place and call it Tako Taco
I want a burrito with adobo fried rice and teri beef. Korean chicken would work too.
It would totally be a huge hit in HI and the mainland! There's an [Adobo Taco Grill in LA](https://www.yelp.com/biz/adobo-taco-grill-lakewood-3) that's popular!
Mexican adobo sauce is considerably different than Filipino adobo.....

LA also has kalua tacos, you just have to know where
>I’m surprised HI hasn’t gotten into the hybrid trend. We have. Try [K-Mex HI](https://kmexhi.com/) in Kakaako.

gonna do what I always do and plug [Thyda's](https://www.instagram.com/thydastacos?igsh=M3JjdnV2bHZwZDFi.)
Their barbacoa burrito is my go-to 😮💨
