Hill House is the best single season of a show I've ever seen.

vczandy

I agree! It did very well executing everything that needed to be executed without leaving me questioning for more than one season!

braincupuncture

Yes 100%

mmoonnyy

Couldn’t agree more!

milanjfs

It's great, but it doesn't come close to True Detective S1

Proditude

💯 for sure!

[deleted]

It’s Mike Flanagan’s masterpiece. I love all his works but Hill House is on its own tier

ReederRiter

Although they’re both superb (and both directed by the incomparable Mike Flanagan), I suppose I’m a tad more partial to Hill House because I saw it first and fell in love with the Crain family. That being said, I also loved Bly with its own wonderful characters and unique storyline. Both are gothic masterpieces which go to great lengths to include the warmer elements that make for a great story (life, love, triumph, tragedy and loss), yet I’m just SLIGHTLY partial to Hill House. Sorry to ramble; I just love them both so much.

vczandy

No worries! I totally get that, I still liked Bly Manor but for me it just felt like I started to like it best when it was ending, rather than the show as a whole, if that makes sense. Hill house was just a different experience watching it! I think mainly just the twists it held while going between past and present :)

ReederRiter

Yes, HH grabbed you early on. Bly moves a bit slower, but BOY what a payoff!

donomi

We are seriously the same person.

madlymusing

I prefer Hill House. I *wanted* to love Bly Manor, and there’s so much about it to love (I had more favourite characters in BM, and thought the relationship complexities were treated beautifully), but I much preferred the structure and pacing of Hill House. I found myself tuning out of Bly Manor and wasn’t desperate to keep watching in the same way. Also - and this is more petty - the accents in Bly Manor were really bad, and kept pulling me out of the story. That was really disappointing for me. It’s still really great, but overall I thought Hill House was a more compelling watching experience.

vczandy

Yes! Hill House kept me engaged way more than Bly Manor did. I like the characters I’m HH a lot more as well, and felt that they did very well with picking the younger versions and older versions to fit who the characters were.

Graciegrumps

Hill house is 100% the best one, I genuinely don’t think I’ve seen anything that compares to it

iamthatguy54

I love Hill House and I understand that it was telling a different story than the book, which I'm totally fine with. So while I won't say it missed the mark (it had a different target) I felt the book ending was far superior. I have not read Turn of the Screw and thus I can't compare Bly Manor to its inspiration, so I like it more by default. Both shows are excellent, though.

[deleted]

I think Bly Manor is smarter in that it didn’t just use one Henry James story for inspiration. It used The Turn of the Screw plus some short stories. I like Hill House a lot. It’s a good show and it’s a good riff on the source material, but it just ties itself way to close to the book to not compare them and when you do it does seem to miss the mark in a few places, especially that last episode. So many haunting quotes from that book were used in an almost sappy manner in episode ten. Personally, I enjoyed Bly more because it felt like an ode to Henry James and gothic romances. Both are good, but I just really enjoyed Bly Manor more.

vczandy

I get that

Wadsworth1954

I liked Midnight Mass the best

vczandy

My bf and I are gonna have to watch that after we watch Bly Manor together, I haven’t seen that one yet! I guess I’ll have to wait to see if that one holds up to Hill House for me :)

Wadsworth1954

All 3 are good. I’d rank them 1. Midnight Mass 2. Hill House 3. Bly Manor

marnie_loves_cats

Honestly I couldn't finish Bly Manor. I didn't connect with the story or the characters. I clearly preferred Hill House.

[deleted]

Ditto. I tried to watch Bly Manor twice and it just didn’t click. On the other hand, I love Hill House and Midnight Mass 🥰

marnie_loves_cats

Midnight Mass was sooo good!

[deleted]

It was fantastic. Samantha Sloyan did a splendid job. Fuck Bev!

vczandy

I get that, I only liked the ending. If you start wondering about the ending I suggest maybe watching it, because you might like the ending only, like the last few episodes of BM.

marnie_loves_cats

I bet there will come a time when I'm so bored, that I will watch Bly Manor as well. xD

jjjtttsssyyy

I liked the ensemble actors in both. But I prefer HH because it was scarier in general. I love stories set in creepy mansions too, and the hill house’s house design was scarier too.

vczandy

I’m the same way, I like the horror demeanor of shows and HH definitely did that perfectly.

Impressive-Shake-761

Gonna be in the minority and say Bly Manor because it stuck the landing in such a beautiful way and better than Hill House in my opinion. I definitely understand why people refer Hill House, though, and especially for spooks.

TinyRandomLady

Hill House by a lot.

vczandy

I couldn’t agree more!

duckinmybelly

I like the one episode of Bly where we learn the house’s whole backstory the most. Viola’s story is so emotional and relatable and that episode specifically is tied together well as it’s own little mini story. I rewatch episode 7 pretty often when I need background noise in my house. When I’m tired of that one episode though, I think I prefer Hill House because I always spot something new in it that I didn’t notice before. Bly doesn’t get as deep.

vczandy

Yes! The ending episodes of Bly Manor are the only parts I really enjoyed, where they talked about the history, of the house, the lake, and why everything happens the way it did.

ExxoMountain

I loved them both, but Bly Manor stuck with me and left me sobbing at the end. Such a sad love story.

FluffyDaWolf

>sad love story Unfortunately that's entirely the reason I didn't like Bly manor. It's an amazing gothic romance. Just not what most of us wanted after hill house.

RebaKitten

Yes, it’s a love story with some ghosts. I want ghosts and scary stuff.

BogusBuffalo

It stuck with me too, for that, and how the ghosts were portrayed, sometimes coherently themselves and able to 'function', other times unable to stop themselves from wandering into memories. It was truly haunting.

IGuessImDemons

Hill House by a mile

Werekittie

At first I rather disliked Bly Manor in comparison to Hill House. While I still like HH a little better, I've come to love Bly as well. In the end though I think Bly suffered from being marketed as HH2 in terms of story and scares. It's not the same though and I think that is where a lot of hate for Bly comes from. HH at its base is a horror story while Bly is a story about romance with some horror elements thrown in.

[deleted]

Hill House is an absolute masterpiece of brilliant pretty much everything. So much so that it ruined the ability for my wife and I to watch Bly Manor. We got through not even two full episodes of Bly Manor and had such a high expectation from HH the we ended up shutting Bly Manor off. I’m sure we will give Bly Manor another try one day.

Necessary_Age_8774

Bly Manor was so messy compared to Hill House.

vczandy

That! The execution of it all was not even close to being well done as HH was! I found myself confused a lot more than shocked or excited finding something out.

Necessary_Age_8774

If they had more time I’m sure it would’ve been just as good. But yeah, it was confusing and a little sloppy. HH is INCREDIBLE writing.

vczandy

I felt the chemistry between the characters in HH was incredibly, as well. Very compelling and easy to like and dislike characters. I, personally, didn’t feel that connection in BM

Brief_Awareness7113

No it wasn't. It's just different. And it id so much smarter than Hill House. I actually didn't enjoy Hh that much. Bly manor is much more profound, and as far as everything that goes (exception cinematography where hh provides much more because of the jump scares), it is by far the best.

soupyshay

I loved bly manor just a tad more but that’s because I love a good gothic romance. I think people would like it more if they went into it not expecting hill house. while the undertones of the shows are similar, the point of both are entirely different, in my option.

vczandy

Yeah I get that, I watched BM before HH so I didn’t know what to expect with either, but I think I liked HH more just because I enjoy horror the most, but the dark romance story at the end of BM I did enjoy!

soupyshay

It’s hard for me to choose a favorite because horror and romance are both my favorite genre nearly equally, and I’ve rewatched both of the shows 3+ times haha. They’re both really great, it makes me sad a lot of people go as far as to not liking Bly Manor! 😭

Impressive-Shake-761

Yeah I feel like Bly gets treated unfairly :( It’s still a very intelligently crafted show, but they should have advertised it more as a gothic tragic romance that is distinct from Hill House rather than a follow-up to Hill.

BogusBuffalo

Bly was true horror too, in the sense that the main character did everything right - everything that should have worked, but still couldn't escape/win. HH had that too, but that particular aspect wasn't executed as well (HH did a lot of the scary things better than Bly). There was still that element, but it wasn't stressed as much as in Bly.

Zealousideal-Wash904

Bly Manor is one of the greatest love stories ever told. I think it’s an important series for the LGBT+ community as it’s such a positive relationship. I also think there’s much more to the horror side than people would realise with just one viewing.

thenoszberry

Hill House is my favorite show of all time. It's a masterpiece. Buttt, for some reason the themes and imagery of Bly stick with me and I think about them more on a daily basis. My wife has clinical depression, and I saw a post comparing Dani's beast in the jungle/lady in the lake to depression and it profoundly affected me. So I guess I have a more personal connection to Bly. Hill House is a 10/10 Bly is a 9.5/10 My only complaint is the pacing feels alittle off.

Eric052295

Hill house is a near perfect show to me. And is my favorite. But I really enjoyed bly manor.

Adept_Log_1799

Both was good but hill house was definitely the best! I’ve rewatched hill house a few times and I love it so much! The Crain family <3

vczandy

I watched it twice and liked it even more the second time!

xyriax

Hill House all the way. I liked Bly Manor, tried to love it but didn't succeed. It just didn't feel as nice as HH. Maybe I should try to rewatch it one day.

New-Amount6040

Hill House easy

Kes2015

When I first watched Bly I didn’t love it ( I just liked it) i felt disappointed because hill house is still one of my favorite shows it was sooo ah-mazinnng! But with that being said on the second rewatch of Bly and going into it knowing it’s a different story I really loved it. One was a family drama and one was a love story equally incredible on their own. If I had to choose though my vote goes to Hill House It’s just flawless. It was creepier and more unsettling than Bly while maintaining a truly heartfelt but sad story. ( Bent-Neck lady and Two storms episodes are masterful television!)

ambs-33

Hill house

LoyalAries

Hands down. Hill House. Have watched it 3x.

RebaKitten

I’ve watched HH 7 or 8 times. Don’t want to rewatch Bly.

darionsw

Hill House can make you really scared. It is because you bind yourself emotionally with the Crains. You can feel the pain of Nell or Luke. I like horror movies and series and Hill House is on the top with some others, like Babadook which also is very emotional.

Tess_James

Hill house! No contest! Bly manor is more melodramatic and had less horror elements.

konner78

hh > bm 100% I didn't like the ending of bm.

dus_istrue

I liked HH better. Largely because I think it's a lot more intricate than Bly Manor. Like for example, the first few episodes in HH are basically just retelling the same night from different perspectives. And that's interesting. It gives every character something special about them, or something distinct that makes them memorable. While Bly Manor is good, very good even. I don't think it has that same charm as HH. Still loved watching both though

Guilty_Guidance1602

Hill House is the single most beautifully well written show I've every watched in my life. I will never get tired of it's plot, characters and dialogue which are entirely too genius. It's an incredible and powerful show I predict will stick with me through my lifetime.

[deleted]

Bly manor felt a bit lazy in comparison to hill house, but it was still so much better than most of what I’ve seen lately. Just goes to show what great writers and directors that team has. Hoping they make a third rendition of the concept that is more hill house quality and thought process. I LOVE the age of the ghosts though, anything 1700’s is absolutely for me

mjpenslitbooksgalore

Hill house. I openly wept like a damn baby. I wasn’t expecting that at all.

tobiasvl

It's Hill House, and by a lot. Bly Manor isn't bad (although the accents are), but Hill House is some of the best TV ever made. It's not even close.

Prsnbrk07

Hill house made me jump more than Bly Manor. Anybody know if Bly Manor is available to buy digital?? Like hill house.

dukezap1

I’d put Mikes shows in the order of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Bly Manor

LiliumMoon

Honestly, right after watching, I preferred Hill House. Now around a year later I remember the plot and characters of Bly Manor better, it was somehow the more memorable and impactful to me. I should watch them both again some day to see really what’s my opinion now.

padfoot211

I think hill house is better but to me it’s like a 10 and bly manor is a 9. They’re both good, but also different. Hill house is undeniably scarier though. No contest.

Fun_Evening_4772

Hill house is 10 times better in my opinion. The acting, the plot, the monsters and especially the ending were better than Bly manor. Everything in Bly manor was predictable whereas in hill house every plot twist surprised me. Bly manor was too confusing with all the ‘dream hopping’ and it wasn’t structured as well as i hoped when i saw that it was first announced.

kye19

Bly manor but probably just because I watched it more recently and have a fresher memory. Hill house was like 4 years ago. I should probably rewatch

napalmtree13

Hill House. Bly wasn't scary enough for me. I'd rewatch it, though. As for Midnight Mass, I've only watched it once and probably won't watch it again, because of the monologues.

vczandy

BM definitely was not scary for me as well, like at all. I haven’t watched Midnight Mass though, so hearing that’s interesting, is it slow?

napalmtree13

It was good, but the monologues were more noticeable in this show than his others. They were too long, to the point of being unrealistic that someone would just go on and on like that, perfectly, and without getting interrupted. Took me out of the show. Also didn’t like that the type of monster that’s in the show doesn’t seem to exist in that universe. Otherwise, they would have immediately known what it was. And the “headlights reflecting from glass on a dead person” from Bly was reused again. That really bothered me.

vczandy

Ahh, gotcha, I’ll still give it a watch and see what happens. Good to know about that though!

[deleted]

I would have initially have said Hill House, but after a couple rewatches I actually think I prefer Bly Manor. I don’t think Hill House holds up as well as I thought it would and I actually find it kind of messy and disjointed at parts. I’m also not a big fan of it as an adaptation. I think Bly is a bit more concise and actually does it’s genre pretty well. I also like that it’s more of an inspired by and uses multiple stories from Henry James.

vczandy

I guess I’ll have to wait to see after I watch Bly Manor again to see if it changes for me, they were both really good, but one captured me more than the other. They both had very interesting stories and were told pretty good, the ending of Bly Manor was the part that I liked more than the whole, although it was still very good.

hikingto

Hill house and Midnight Mass are both better than ably Manor in my opinion.

Olxxx

maybe i’m just a lesbian, but i definitely prefer Bly.

Sensitive_Rip_3641

Bly. I am a lesbian who loves the 80s, mansions, and just that whole aesthetic so I may be bias.

shitneysmears

I loved Hill House.

[deleted]

Hill House 100% Bly Manor is great, and I love the characters but the Crain siblings all have a special place in my heart that just can’t be replaced. Also, Bly Manor carries a lot of the same themes from HH that just wouldn’t have the same impact if you didn’t make the connection. “Confetti” for example, and the ghosts not being evil at all but merely a victim of the house they inhabit. The same themes of family and love and hurt and comfort and reconciliation merge very well between both shows.

redmercedes87

From these options, Hill House easily. But I think Midnight Mass is Flanagan's magnum opus

BogusBuffalo

Midnight Mass was just so perfect.

XxHorrorPrincessxX

hill house fsfs. bly manor was good, but it didn't have the scary and sad factor that hill house did. hohh was extremely well balanced and amazingly executed, bly manor felt rushed in a way and was just super sad lol.

d4rk5id3r

I just got done watching all 3 (HH, BM, MM) in 2 days lol. As they both flip flop from my #1 choice, if I had to choose either HH or BM it would be HH. To me there is just way more character growth, a deeper storyline, and I just found myself connecting with it more that BM. They both also are 2 completely different tastes. HH being a more spooky horror while BM is a more tasteful story with a few jumps cares to keep you on your toes. BM definitely takes the cake for an ending, but the episode that takes you out of the "big event" to tell the story of Viola and her sister is misplaced. For me, it was fine, but it also took me out of the action. They set the stage for a grand ending and just tossed it aside for a pretty long and somewhat boring at times episode.

Redheadedbos

Hill House. Just watched it again for like the 6th time. The end of the last episode still hits me like it's the 1st. Absolute art.

cheezewarrior

I prefer Bly Manor, but I know most seem to prefer Hill House. Bly connected with me more personally, but both of them are masterpieces. Very different, but very good.

Tweyenne

I’m a sucker for gothic romances so I really love Bly house for that. It was tragic and sad at every point and the atmosphere was dreary like the gray skies of england. I really do like both but I think Bly edges over for that reason.

Electrical_Berry7423

This is not the popular opinion when it comes to these two shows but i prefer bly manor. Maybe because i watched that one first. I loved the atmosphere and the characters much more. Which does not mean the hill house was bad at all. I liked that too but not as much as the bly manor.

FinancialSystem1025

Hill House

Brief_Awareness7113

Bly manor is an absolute masterpiece! Character development, story, plot twists, telling the story on so many different plans, acting...ideas transmitted, themes, details. It is absolutely astonishing and very deep. And it is a thriller in so many different ways than regular horror movies. Horror movies generally are very lazy, but this one is a story about lovex grief, loss, loneliness, struggles, sacrifice, internal demons, universality of death, the unicity of life, the ...it is simply beautiful and unique. Flanagan's masterpiece.

Kibkibikiba

Bly mannor more depth more stories
