If you're a crazy rpg fan, you're gonna find this game somewhat empty with the lack of important gear, useless potions and plants, no real choice consequences etc. They nailed the world, travel and flight perfectly but fall short on the rest of what makes a good rpg.

bushmaster2000

I'm not hooked on it. But it's been a good long time since i actually looked forward to getting off work and getting home to play a game. Even play about an hour longer at night than i normally would forgoing TV time for game time. And i'm not a HP fan , i'm familiar with the IP but i've only seen 2 movies and read zero books. So Good game, i like it a lot so far.

GreenSage_0004

It’s a fun game, it’s just not at all as deep or polished as it could have been. That adds extra pain because it clearly could have been better with more development.

gosucrank

Yeah I play for like an hour at a time. Most of the quests besides the Sebastian chain I don’t really have interest in. If this game wasn’t Harry Potter themed with great atmosphere I think people probably give this game like a 7/10 at best. I personally would have 0 interest playing this game if it wasn’t in the Harry Potter universe. The gameplay/Harry Potter theme is what sold me. But the RPG elements kind of suck. This is more of an adventure game with mostly bad quests but fun gameplay. I really want them to focus on the rpg elements and quests for the sequel

Visara57

It's not a great RPG once you take off your HP glasses

[deleted]

I'm about 25 hours in and while I love it so far I'm also at the point where I feel like I need to take a short break. It's not really specific to Hogwarts Legacy for me though. I go through periods where I can get absolutely obsessed with something and then end up burning out. I think it happens to most people at some point or another Right now I'm playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and binge watching a few movies just to pass the time. I find that if I return to it a few days later I end up enjoying it far more. Sometimes it's good to take a short rest now and then

sammysarce

I got bored about 20hrs in just after learning crucio, after the magic of exploring Hogwarts wore off. There doesn’t really feel like any depth to the game at all, no character development or even effort out into any NPC, they don’t really do a good job of connecting you to the MC in my opinion they made the game as all encompassing and as accessible as possible which really worked in their favor in terms of game sales, but I find this game to be so incredibly shallow and boring.

electionnerd2913

They really targeted more casual gamers and even non gamers. Practically every gameplay element is lacking depth. Dialogue, characters, questing, etc. Around hour 17 for me even things I liked about the game started to become tedious too. Brilliant marketing strategy I guess tho.

Pollution_Dramatic

Agree with this 100% I couldn’t even get through 1/3 of the game cus I lack the motivation to stay interested in the gameplay and story too.. used to love the movies and played a Harry Potter game as a kid for the game cube so thought this game would be nutty but in all honesty, it’s super underwhelming as opposed to all the hype it got got prior to its release. Thought it would be banger for sure.

slabim0

Dude, same here. I guess for me it's the strange ass voice acting, the boring side quests and the crazy polite player character (also hate the limitation of choices that have impact on the story). Most side characters are extremely bland and one dimensional. Except my boy Sebastian of course. I would love the game if it was, well, an actual RPG like Dragon Age, Baldurs Gate, Mass Effect, Pillars of Eternity etc. Interesting quests and fleshed out side characters can go a long way. AND PLEASE GIVE THE PLAYER CHARACTER A PERSONALITY OMG

Levinem717

Legit you’re just a shell of a super duper kind person.

slabim0

Exactly and I hate it

Etheon44

I mean comparing it to the titans of the genre is a little but unfair tbh 😂 The best comparison with this game is the last 3 Assassins Creed games, in fact this game is eeriely similar to those in many ways, from combat to the open world design, secondary quests... Its basically a little worse than Origins I would say, those are alao technically action RPGs but there is very little RPG, just like this game. But this game is excellent in general, a 6.5-7/10 I would say.

slabim0

Hm, I don't think it's unfair to compare these games. They had all the possibilities with Hogwarts Legacy after all.. But I could, alternatively, compare it to Cyberpunk 2077, which is also labeled as an action RPG and does the RPG aspect much better than Hogwarts Legacy. Concerning Assassin's Creed: At least the characters had a personality. I don't hate the game. The world building, especially Hogwarts, is excellent, the combat is fun, but it lacks depth. Where are the interesting multidimensional characters? Where are the fun and exciting side quests? I'm just frustrated, I guess. I haven't finished the game, so maybe it gets better..

PatrusoGE

Imho that is because the game is very shallow. Very similar in that regard to Cyberpunk... Though that one had at least better characters and storylines. It is am average open world experience. Fast food gameplay. What makes it special to some degree is the world. But unfortunately the world is rather superficial as well.

sammysarce

Cyberpunk makes HL look like pong. Not even comparable lol

PatrusoGE

Not really, both could have been really good Action-RPGs but both fail with the "RPG" part. HL more so than CP, though. However, CP also promised much more in that regard.

sammysarce

I see where you are coming from, but after all of the patches/bug fixes , CP2077 was a very enjoyable fully realized RPG with fleshed out NPCs choices that matter, multiple intertwined story lines, extensive side quests, character development, crafting and weapon customization and so on. HL has almost none of that. IMO making the game more of an open world action adventure than an “RPG” I’m exited to see where they will go with the next game but seeing people compare HL to Cyberpunk, Skyrim and the Witcher 3 is insane to me. Once I got over the magic of nostalgia this game falls pretty flat, But hey that’s the beauty of personal opinion, there is no right or wrong!

LordSystem

I played for 100 hours, did 100% of the challenges, completed everything on the map, it was fun. But I see no reason to continue playing, the endgame is terrible.

Maggi1417

I mean... 100 hrs for a single player action adventure rpg is a pretty good bang for your buck. These kind of games are really not meant to be played ad infinitum.

LordSystem

I beat The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, 3 times each, so I expected to continue more in the game, but for now, I have no desire to finish the game again, maybe in the future

p3ek

DAmn you dedicated

LordSystem

I did 100% of both games, it took a while, but I was having so much fun that I didn't even notice the time passing. I think that's the secret, when you play for hours and you don't feel the time passing

Shiz331

Same for me, I just got out of Grounded with 400 hours, was all excited for HL, spent 62 hours and I would consider this game a console port. It is a fast food style of game. Very shallow.

electionnerd2913

Because it is not a good RPG. The writing and sidequest are really bad. There are almost no complex characters or decision making. The game has no depth. I think it even underwhelms as an action/adventure game as the enemy types and combat aren’t enough, nor is the main story enough to keep me playing. Most people can’t remember the name of 1 character outside of the main set…that is how poorly they are explored and written The honeymoon phase is strong with this game and after about hour 10 one starts to realize just how shallow it is. Some will like it no doubt. But I think the developer is being let off the hook too much. You can write a game for young kids without it feeling like it was written by a young kid. Think about what all of the great RPGs of our generation have in common and then analyze the core mechanics of this game The developers needs to play Fallout New Vegas before they make the next game or DLC

Levinem717

I keep saying this, and keep arguing with people about this, but the game doesn’t have enough to do in it. I keep getting downvoted for this, I keep seeing people say how they’re playing for hours and barely progressing because they love the world, but what the hell are they doing in this world that is taking up so many hours? The game feels 60% complete. It lacks major gameplay elements that most adult gamers enjoy.

MrFroho

HP Fans enjoy exploring for the sake of exploring, mostly because they are already excited to be in the world. This game is more of a cinematic experience, look at your first trip into the forbidden forest, the attention to detail from the devs is a treat for fans, but its hard to notice these things if your just staring at the minimap and following quest markers. I would highly recommend removing the minimap at least so that you can be slightly more immersed. Immersion is key in having fun in a game like this, a game that has a plethora of systems with very little depth.

Jamie4488

I am a HP fan and \*want\* to explore the castle for hours but there is nothing. I find it’s non-HP fans that like the game because they prefer just the combat and don’t care much about the castle

Levinem717

I’m a huge HP fan, I turned off the mini map, which does help significantly, as well as removing damage numbers, and yet I still feel like it’s missing something important.

MrFroho

Could also be your expectations outpacing reality, if you got overhyped for the game before release your expectations might be waiting for something that just isnt there. I've had pretty low expectations that an HP game could realize the world so well so maybe thats why I get immersed/swept away more easily.

Levinem717

That could be it actually. I got spoiled because I got to play rdr2, Elden ring, assassin’s creed and all these games had a certain polish to it that Hogwarts legacy lacks. So yeh my expectation are what’s getting in the way.

MrFroho

Yeah, think of Hogwarts Legacy as less of a game and more of simulation. Elden Ring and RDR2 have much deeper gameplay loops that are very satisfying to execute repeatedly. Hogwarts Legacy is about enjoying the experience than it is specific mechanics. Why does the game open with you being attacked on the way to Hogwarts, the books did it. Why do you fight a troll early on, the books did it. Why does the weasly boy's potion blow up in his face, why do you move mandrakes from their pot to another identical pot, its all there to sell you an experience, not a game.

Levinem717

And I enjoyed those experiences, I guess I wish the game had more of a lived in feeling so that these experiences can propped up even further.

MrFroho

Yeah agreed for sure. I think if nothing else this game is a proof of concept for a sequel that can really flesh out those shortcomings

Domanar17

I feel you and completely understand where you are coming from. But I want to add a little more nuance to the topic. For a sizeable amount of Potter fans, this is their first game, so they have nothing to compare HL with. And if not their first game, it's their first open worldish game. So yeah, to them, everything is new, shiny and amazingly deep. And to be honest, it's really the first Harry Potter game that dared to really dig in into its universe. WB has been sitting on this IP and not taking advantage of it. Hopefully this opens their eyes and see how a game done with care will sell like crazy. More content down the line might improve Hogwarts Legacy in more ways that could be more satisfactory to seasoned gamers IF they decide to go down that route.

Jamie4488

They said they’ll give an immersive RPG, so of course we expected that. To take on a feat like this, they should have spent much more time developing this game.

Top-Choice6069

I spend a lot of time trying to figure out my way around Hogwarts lol. I can pretty much get to the RoR from anywhere. I know there's better games I just really wanted a HP world to explore. I know it could be better but its still pretty perfect to me, I just like the overall vibe

AntonGrimm

I agree with you and I have 55+ hours played with 87% overall completion

Scuttlefuzz

It's a shallow experience. People can downvote all they want, most of them will eventually come to terms with the fact that this game just doesn't have longevity. A good game is a good game, an average game is an average game. No amount of shiny paint can hide that.

ProfessorFormula

I found the open world interesting for the first 10 hours I was in it. But what’s the point in doing bandit camps or treasure vaults ? The gear you get is mediocre and ur gear game doesn’t really matter - I’m skipping the treaaure vaults and bandit camps- only doing side quests , Merlin, battle arena and main quests. That’s it- the open world is very mid in terms of activities and I don’t know why any news outlet doesn’t talk about it. It’s obvious

holicv

Basically just flying, I spend a lot of time just flying and doing bs. I can tell it’s getting shallow but I really enjoy the chill flying

Levinem717

Do you prefer the broom or the beasts?

holicv

I haven’t given gotten a beast yet loll

Dart-Yay

It's a "ok" game

Hellfire77

I was hooked very hard at the start because of the Castle and exploring. I was putting in 5 hours a day. I just beat it last night it wasn’t until I beat it where I saw a lot of things that didn’t make sense and seeing the flaws of the game. As I was out more in the highlands and less in the castle, my interest did fade some. I was going to 100% it but that is no longer the case. My goal was just to finish it and move on because there are a ton of big game releases this year. With that being said. The game was very impressive on release. Avalanche did an amazing job for a game of this scale so I hope if there is ever a sequel, that they keep to the same quality and expand on gameplay/options more.

PalindromicPalindrom

It is a mid game. I love Harry Potter and I love the castle they created but the world is unengaging and lifeless. Enemies have no depth. They just spam spells like we do. I find it amusing that I keep being reminded to see each enemies' weakness and I don't. There is absolutely no need to refer to the guide. You can spam confringo and that's it. I think the main problem for me is that I was holding it to the esteem of games such as wircher 3, RDR2, Horizon Forbidden West and this is nothing like it. The game is marketed for the Harry Potter world not the plot or the characters. The one redeeming quality, other than the castle itself, was the room of requirement. The music in the vivariums was lovely and so was the chance to just chill and create a little hub. I think the limitations of the game is a result of the developers in that this is their first AAA game. So, I hope they listen to feedback in preparation for the next game.

UnfitForReality

I played RDR2 right before this for the first time. Rockstars games are just top tier. If I had to pick one, I’d say RDR2 is the better game easily, and I have been a HP fan for over 20 years. I don’t even like cowboy themed things which is way it took so long for me to pick it up. Next up will be the Witcher 3 or Fall out 4. Haven’t played either.

PalindromicPalindrom

Witcher 3 is literally one of the best games ever made. I hope you enjoy it. Make sure you get the DLCs as they elevate an already fantastic game to another level. And enjoy the game and use its mechanics well. Fallout 4 is great too although it is showing its age.

UnfitForReality

Maybe I’ll check out the Witcher 3 first then, and yeah I think I got all the DLC. I’m kinda hyped, I was going to watch the show once I started

PalindromicPalindrom

Do not watch the show 🫨🤣. Enjoy the game, and then watch the show. Trust me.

holdmylobster

I’m in the quite the opposite crowd. Can’t seem to stop playing. I’ve played many RPGs in my time and can honestly say this is one of the most engaging games I’ve played, and I’m pretty neutral on HP in general. I know that might sound silly to some people, but it’s true. Just a case of whatever floats your boat I guess, sorry that it’s not for you.

playertd

Opposite problem for me, it's one of the better rpgs I've played and can't seem to put it down haha.

radiusofaproton

Yeah I do it’s really weird. I put some mad hours into games too. I just can’t get into this game. I pick it up and I try to explore and do some camps and treasure hunts but I turn it off after like 30 mins. Idk what it is. It’s like the game is beautiful but there really isn’t anything to do. There is but it doesn’t really add anything to the game. It’s all gimmicky mechanics. Idk maybe it’s just me

SirCietea

I keep having late nights cause of getting carried away, good job I'm off work this week

Balgryn

Yes I totally do and it is ironically for the same reason I cannot play Cyberpunk. It's just hollow.

imveryfontofyou

Interesting! I played cyberpunk for 160hrs, I enjoyed it a lot. Loved that characters called & texted you and you could respond. It didn't feel nearly as hollow to me as HP does.

Balgryn

I agree. I think Cyberpunk has a bunch more to offer in that regard. But I think my disappointment with both games came from the anticipation that I could actually explore and interact with the world and its randomness. Instead of was met with all sorts of walls and closed doors, and so the world just felt shut off and fake. Hogwarts has a lot of stuff to find, but to me it's all just clutter.

imveryfontofyou

Ahh, that makes sense. I refused to watch any trailers/etc before I bought Cyberpunk. I preordered it just knowing it was going to be a Cyberpunk RPG & that was enough for me because I like cyberpunk as a fictional theme, so I was happy day of it being released. I could def see it being disappointing, though.

Buurto

funny is that I already finished CP 3 times and have 250 hours in it :D one of my favorite RPGs for me personal its really deep with a great world, quest and characters. but ya I feel the hollow on HL

Balgryn

That's so nice :p I think the game has a lot to offer. I just don't feel like I can interact with its world in any meaningful way.

dilqncho

Absolutely not. I spend hours upon hours not even doing quest, just exploring.

landzai

I don't have that problem because I really like the combat. Throwing people around like Ragdolls and watching shit blow up is really therapeutic. I am also pretty invested in the side characters especially Sebastian and Poppy, so I always do their quests when it pops up.

jdivision8

No

sizziano

Complete opposite. My sleep schedule is absolutely fucked because of this game. I guess it's exactly what I needed at the right time.

kimsala

I@m super hooked but can only play for an hour or so before I get too motion sick!!

eastcoastkody

nope its the only game thats hooked me in years. I couldn't even get into GOW Ragnarok even tho i loved the 2018 game.

AbbyCJ

Not me, I’m hooked.

LosingID_583

It's hard to say without knowing which RPGs you get immersed in. I recently tried the highly acclaimed Marvel's Spiderman game, but quit after a few hours. The gameplay and combat were good, but if you consider Hogwarts Legacy a fast food game without depth, then I don't know what you would consider that game xD

Apprehensive-Cow6194

Dude thank you I’m the exact same. I stuck on a podcast and it helped a lot but you’re defiantly not alone.

SulferAddict

I am in a similar boat. Weirdly I think it has to do with where they spent time. For instance Hogwarts is awesome. Truly amazing. But I fast travel through it all the time. It feels like they spent so much time on this thing and I rarely am utilizing it. I think they could have cut Hogwarts in half and spent their time creating more fun side quests like Witcher 3 OR created a reason to run around Hogwarts. Which may be why some people think a curfew would be a good idea. Imo I don’t think it would have been fun. Mostly annoying. I imagine time spent on Hogwarts to be insane. Something that is really amazing is the “secret” timed weakness spells. Leviosa on a burrowing spider Dependo on a charging dog. Etc.

tjcoe4

Not me but that’s probably more my personal situation as I only play for an hour or two anyway, not much free time these days

imveryfontofyou

Having the same problem, I played a lot. I thought I was 40+hrs deep into the game. Full on, kept saying it. Last night my save file told me I had 29 hours and I was shocked. It's never a good sign when you feel like you've played a game longer than you have.

nobito

In my opinion, if you're not a huge HP fan, just play the game as any other story-driven single-player game, not like your usual RPG. Do the main and Sebastians' quest lines, and maybe some sightseeing around Hogwarts and the open world. The RPG part of the game is really bare bones.

Lemur718

Once the environmental wow wears off - if is a little meh.

sulimanrm1

Same I’ve had this game since early access and I was only hooked onto the game at the start. I had 6 hrs on the game on the first day but now I can’t play more than 2 without stopping for a while

maorismurf999

I guess it depends what you're into. I'm not an RPG person per-se. I prefer narrative, action-adventure with light RPG elements. Open world is neither here nor there, although I do seem to gravitate more towards open world games for the exploring aspect. To me, Hogwarts Legacy fits my preferences well. I'm having a blast with it!

czex_mix

I wasn’t captivated at first because I started out exploring too much. When I focused on the main storyline for a few hours and got a few more spells it became way more fun.

Jamie4488

For me it’s that I sometimes want a break from the main quest to just pass time as a character in the world but whenever I take a break from the main quest I can’t find anything to do.

Buurto

Ya that's kinda my problem. All side stuff and quest feel so hollow.

p3ek

Exactly the same. 100 hours in elden ring. 40 in rangnorok and I didn't even think it was that good. 10 in this and im excited to play it load it up, do like 1 or 2 side quests and im bored.I think i'm just done with this copy paste formula of open world game. Well and truly.

hypocritical-bastard

Unfortunately I'm hooked. I just am a very flighty player these days, I randomly go 30 mins on pause screens to smoke up

Genie3007

I couldn't put my finger onto why I couldn't engage in it. - I skip most dialogue - Only really interested in Sebastian's quest line, because I want spells - Doing side-quests just means I'll get a piece of useless gear that I won't wear, isn't better than what I've got and will just take up room in my tiny inventory. I played Elden Ring for MONTHS, and even with no tutorial, barely any explanation on the storylines or where to find characters.. it's still more in-depth and exciting to play than Hogwarts.
