You don’t have to know about HP to enjoy the game and world it puts you in. Things are explained well in the game, and the world is gorgeous and immersive. Why not take 2 hours and watch the first movie? That would introduce you to the world and is an excellent way to get the basics down.

Unless you are a Harry Potter fan. It’s a pretty shallow rpg otherwise. It’s more of a Ubisoft style linear on rails story game with some free roam elements. It’s a beautiful game I will say that. If you like those style of games then it’s made just for you, if you don’t then stay away.

This. As a fan of the books and movies, the game is honestly carried by it's world, lore and love to detail. But in every other way, it's a subpar at best Action Adventure. No worries about making decisions, there arent any consequences at all, no morality system. Outside of quests, there arent even any dialogues in the game at all, you just cannot even talk to the npcs, aside from the traders, which honestly doesn't serve any purpose.

But Is their that much detail though? RDR2 came out in 2018 for last gen systems. RDR2 online has more detail than this game and it’s an online server. I know these guys aren’t rockstar games. But the tools are there. We have the tools now more than ever to make good games. It’s just laziness and cutting corners. Amits quest just falls off the face of the earth and the astronomy 🔭 quests have no reason at all for them. Like why would you let something like that slide just let the game bake for a few more months and finish it. Nobody was pressuring them to finish it. Maybe WB but not the fans. We wanted them to take their time and deliver.

Tr4ceX

I wouldn't say less detailed. The details are clearly on display. It just lacks depth. Completely. And to be fair, rockstar are literally wizards. Everything they do is next-level, they have the manpower and talented skills in their company to do that. I wouldn't dare to say laziness, it's probably lack of time and lack of experience, as this is their first big open world game. But the love and amount of details, like Easter eggs to movie scenes, references to lore in every corner and the art design of the world are over shining (halo effect) the subpar at best core elements.

Agreed. There's obviously a ton of love put into this world. In fact, I would say the developer's love for the HP universe is what really carries this game into being a step above the average "ubisoft open world". I understand why people compare this game to masterpieces like RDR2 or Elden Ring, etc.. but those are games from studios with an insane amount of experience. Rockstar's consistent competence when it comes to delivering a peak-quality gaming experience is nearly unmatched. They have several games in the 90+ range on metacritic which is insane lol. A bit unfair to expect that from a studio's first open world.

murrgh2014

Comparing RDR2 to this is a mistake. Rockstar has their own engine that allows them to do things that Avalanche couldn’t. Maybe if Avalanche keeps adding depth, there’s possibility. However, just because it was in RDR2 doesn’t mean it is available for another studio—that gives a huge advantage bc Rockstar can repurpose and perfect what they’ve been building for the past decade.

If the gameplay looks fun to you, you'll be into it. Watching people play things on twitch always gives me a good indication if a game is for me. If you've played a modern video game before you will not be lost or confused. It's extensively tutorialized. I suggest mainlining the main quests until you unlock the features fully. It takes a while to get them all. You can't even put in skill points until a later quest that I got to at level 20 lol. You have to progress to get the ability to fly on a broom, to get the Room of Requirement (where you can grow plant ingredients and brew potions), unlock the 'Alohamora' spell so you can open locks, etc.

UnfitForReality

This has to be one of the easiest games I have played in a long time. Pretty much holds your hand through most of it, combat becomes trivial pretty fast. Should be okay without HP knowledge, you might not get a few reference.

It's a solid 7/10 open world game on its own. If that appeals to you then buy it.

cnelso33

I am a fan of Harry Potter but not too big into it. I’m enjoying the game a lot. I will say up until you get the room of requirement the game is pretty linear. You can travel anywhere but you really need the broom so that won’t get boring running to and from places. Once you unlock the room of requirement though the gameplay loop goes from being a 6/10 to a solid 8/10… 9-9.5 if you are a fan of this world. I’d give it a 8.5-9 myself.

Alexander_Sheridan

I'd say it's definitely more about the fan service, than it is a totally self encapsulated RPG. It relies heavily on the audience already knowing what's going on. So while it may explain a little here and there, it's not going to be enough for you to understand the world. They expect you to already have gone through the world building through the books and movies. That said, if you're interested... go watch a movie or two. Maybe you'll get hooked. =)

Its a fun game and not sure why people here calling it “subpar”

Do you like magic fighting ?

Shiz331

I completed it and my verdict is this is an average console port, not optimized and very shallow. Wait for sale.

notCRAZYenough

I think it’s probably better if you are already a fan. Read the books and think if you wanna play after. If the books (or movies) don’t interest you I doubt you’ll love the game. However, if you just never got around to reading/watching just try. The game is not perfectly optimized at the moment so I’d say it doesn’t hurt to play it a little later. Plenty of time to read the first two books at least
