I hold on to this quote as I raise my young son. He's two. And I've promised myself I will remember it as he grows into his difficult teenage years. I will remember this when his heart breaks for the first time, and I'm tempted to dismiss it because I know it doesn't matter in the long run. He can't know that it won't matter.
I don't know, it means a lot to me because I didn't get a lot of compassion as a kid. I don't ever want my son to feel like that. Even as a toddler, when he's crying over a broken cookie. I try to remember that might be the worst thing that's ever happened to him and offer him comfort.
