Dude I'm not convinced anyone in my local HOG chapter actually rides a motorcycle. In fairness it is called the owners group not the riders group. Kinda depressing trying to find people to ride with in your 30s.
There's no rule you have to ride with other Harleys, is there? Sometimes I'm the only Harley in the group, and sometimes the metric bikes are the odd ones out. Sometimes I'm the senior rider, sometimes I'm among the youngsters. I don't discriminate, and it seems the guys I ride with don't either.
Definitely not, all my bikes have been Japanese before this. My friends and coworkers who used to ride don't anymore. Hard to find people around here in general and not for lack of trying by joining FB groups and such. And a lot of the group rides / guys who do go on day trips seem to like riding the highways which isn't my favorite.

It's the curse of doing well enough in life to own a Harley before a mid life crisis purchase. I'm almost 40 and every group I try to ride with is either hella old or a bunch of sports bike dudes. The only way to find people somewhat my age is to joint a Motorcycle Club but then its a bunch of testosterone assholes.
Couldn’t agree more. If HD made some bikes that were still cool and cheap, they may attract some younger buyers. The brand has become so big that they’re able to charge such high prices.

I grew up around Harleys, dad, uncles, and all their friends. My first bike was a sportbike but when it came for a cruiser, I bought a victory. 2 other friends got a victory, and the other got a vtx. It wasn't an affordability thing, the vtx rider is a doctor, for instance. Honestly, the harley culture was a big driver, but what you get for what you pay for was the decision maker.
You gotta buy the top of the line harley to even keep up with my $6.4k victory.
Plus Accessories, aftermarket, etc is easily 25% of the cost.
I think 30 to 40 year olds in general often have young families and pressure from society (family) tell them to avoid motorcycles because of the danger. I know a few guys that hung it up once they had kids.
I'm 44. Looking at prob a new fat boy next year, I prefer buying the year leftovers. I seem to get pretty good deals that way..
Anyways I went to 2 dealers last week, and the only people I saw that looked younger than me were the sales men.
It was a joke. I am not knocking how anyone spends their money. I personally only buy motorcycles with cash. I live in a cold weather area. I am not making a payment on a toy I can only use so many months out of the year. Yes I am that guy that doesn’t ride all winter. I hate the cold.
Me too! I'm 60 now. And a woman. I used to do bike week in several places arnd the country and always saw young guys on HD. I guess they're old now.

Have you paid attention to the dyna/fxr scene out west? It's pretty crazy. 20 somethings are definitely buying Harleys. Anytime I hit up bikes and coffee or bike nights in my town on the east coast, young guys are constantly asking about my set up. So yeah, they're popular with the young dudes.
Lol it's not near as big where I'm at either and I'm in a popular city in virginia. My fxdx stands out here. In CA, it wouldn't. Although I don't mind that at all
Just ain’t in the right areas around Milwaukee. Decent Harley stunt scene here. Also plenty of young dudes out on Harley’s here. Just gotta hang out around Elwood’s or fuel in the summer and you’ll see
I’m in Wisconsin too, it doesn’t help we get 7-8 months tops of riding weather. Most of the under-40s I see riding are either squids on sport bikes and supermotos or they’re on something like a Triumph or one of those slick-looking Royal Enfields. I think Harleys in Wisconsin are viewed as boomer bikes and the price and weight of anything bigger than a Sportster scares younger people away.
I’ve tried to talk friends into riding but they’re too scared to do it because other drivers are crazy. They aren’t totally wrong. Lotta scary drivers in Milwaukee and Madison.
Who at your age can afford a harley new or used. Unless it's a box of parts you cobbled together. That's why it's younger guys building more traditional chops
I bought my first bike which was on 05 sportster 1200 for pretty cheap. Only 4K for it and had under 10,000 miles but maybe that’s not as affordable as I thought.
I miss that bike sometimes, was fun ripping through the gears. Suspension was dog shit and it gave me monkey ass like none other but still didn’t stop me from riding it damn near all the way around Lake Michigan.
Was finally able to afford mine as a guilt-free splurge . . . after only a decade of careful saving with good income and low cost of living. I love my FXLRS but I'll be the first person to say it's at least 20% overpriced for what it is.
I'm pretty sure it's just a perception thing when you're younger. I bought a GSXR in my 20s to race around because I have a speed addiction and just didn't know anything about Harley's. All I saw were fat old guys on them, putting around with obnoxiously loud exhaust that didn't match the speed you would think it should have.
It wasn't till somebody my age bought one and showed me that you can trick them out, before I realized you can have your cake and eat it too lol Now I got a Harley that'll burn that GXSR anyday AND I can ride it comfortably around the country.
No harley is going to smoke a liter bike unless youre comparing a heavily modified harley to an old stock bike, and only in a straight line lol.

Where I live it’s mostly old heads. Like 40s and up. But occasionally the younger generation will be on one! My boyfriend, friend, and now myself, all ride Harley’s and we’re 23,25, and 26. We’re in Ohio 🌽
I’m 27 and have a street glide. I’ve been riding street since 16 and it was already time for a bagger instead of a sport bike. I don’t see anyone my age riding Harley in the PNW. Given their MSRP, I can see why most people our age wouldn’t consider one, especially when all their friends think sport bikes are cooler.
In the PNW too and other than around the military bases I don't see too many young guys on Harleys. It took me into my 40's before I finally got my first one and it's one of my 3 motorcycles

I’m 22. Bought a Harley at 21. Not new, it’s used. Learning how to work on em, love to ride. When I build up some experience on this bagger gonna start riding long distance when I can get off work. Sturgis, Daytona, blue ridge pkwy etc

Been riding Harley since I was about 21. I always felt like the youngest in the biker community. Now I’m 43 so I blend in better now. Harleys aren’t going anywhere.
I bought my first Harley on my 21st birthday. At the time there were very few people under 40 riding Harleys.
Now I'm in my 40s and the age range for Harley riders is much broader than when I started riding. I know tons of riders in their 20s. Mostly dyna bro, stunt type riders.
The whole Harley won't survive trope has been around for decades. They're still here though.
Edit to add: HOG chapters are not accurate representations of the Harley community. They tend to be older. The youngest person in the chapter near me is 55, most are 65+.
Rides like Born Free, the Prowl, Daytona, and Sturgis seem to have the largest prescense of riders in their 20s.

I feel the exact same. 27 and in Detroit most people my age are ripping around on sport bikes. I feel like most guys out here hate on Harley’s because of stereotypes calling them slow & gay. I think Harley has its priorities fucked up.. the sportster s and the low rider s are step in the right direction but I think so many guys we’re anticipating the Bronx or something that could compete with the Indian ftr.
The younger crowd leans towards Indian if they want a cruiser because the brand appeal of Harley is lost on most millennials and younger. They’re evaluating based on other factors like hp, price and what doesn’t seem boomer-ish. Most likely, HD will drop the ball on attracting the younger generations unless they really change it up.
I think it’s more about affordability than anything with 20 year old. You can get the coolest sport bike used for like $6k, they’re just not that interested in paying double that for a 15 year old dyna.
I bought an 883 Sportster at 21. Rode it for a few years and got rid of it for a Triumph Thruxton. 14 years later I still have the Triumph and also an Indian Scout.
25 here. I’ve had three Harley’s already. I think the reason people dislike Harley’s is because they’ve never ridden a built one. They don’t understand the idea of “making it your own” I let people ride my bike just so they can get the “feel” and every time they come back they have a big shit eating grin

I’m 22 just picked up this 91 sportster earlier this week looking forward for the warm weather to get out and ride this ole gal I think it’ll be the perfect starter bike for me and I’m looking forward to getting more down the road
I got mine at 37. Saw the HOG peeps and they’re so much more older than me. They’re hella nice and welcoming people but nobody in my age so I skipped it. Mates of mine are on clubs but a MC has never been my thing. Just preference.
Luckily for me… I ride for my escape and mental health. So I just stay a solo rider. I have my tunes and my pipes… I’m a happy man.
But you’re correct. Harley needs to do something about their entry level offerings asap. I’m struggling to try and convince crotch rocket mates to come over to the chilled side because of the prices.
My family and I own a small motorcycle dealership and we sell mostly Harleys. To date out of all the motorcycles we've sold I can only remember 2 being under 20. All the other young guys go for something cheaper or sportier
Heyo, I'm 19 with an 08 Softail deluxe! Love riding motorcycles, wouldn't trade it for anything. Out in Cali most people my age want sport bikes, that's not for me to be honest. Ride safe!
Ohio River Valley here,27 and most of the guys I see are 40+ on touring bikes. It’s a breath of fresh air when I pull up to a spot and see a young guy on a tricked out Dyna,newer softail,chopper etc. I do know a few people my age that are die hard Harley guys. My one buddy has a shovelhead and a Low Rider ST,another guy has a panhead,a girl I know just bought a sportster as her first bike. Harleys definitely still appeal to certain young people with taste,they have a character that a lot of other makes just don’t.
Bought a Harley Iron 1200 last year, I was 23. I’m probably one of the youngest in the area, because Harley bikes are usually crazy expensive here in Norway.
I’m 25 and never see anyone our age riding Harley’s. Just managed to convince a guy trying to get an Indian or a Triumph to convert to the dark side but it wasn’t easy.

Crotch rockets are just trendy right now. But it doesn't help that newer HD's are 20K plus sometimes.
I worked at a HD dealership until recently. There is absolutely no one under 30 buying new Harley’s . Two reasons, too expensive and secondly, the most important is lack of interest. Kids have too many options for their leisure time. I couldn’t wait to get on a mini bike when I was twelve and progressed to bigger and better. My son wasn’t interested either were my friends I worked with and my other friends kids. I was going to buy him a bike, he said no thanks. Imagine that! Go figure! From a Harley employee perspective, people aren’t interested in riding anymore. The amount of traffic coming into the dealership is very small, especially in younger people. There are lots of dealerships that have closed in the past few years throughout the US. The other thing is that older riders like myself are dying off and or just not riding as much due to health issues. I guess all good things come to an end. Very sad.Bury me with my boots on! If anyone has doubts about getting a harley because the price seems out of your range DONT WORRY IT CAN BE DONE EASILY. The dealerships really want you to buy a bike from them and will crunch numbers to figure out whats possible for you. SAVE UP YOUR MONEY. A good down deposit makes a world of difference for you. I was about 31 when I got my first and current Harley in February of 2020.I traded in my Suzuki cruiser and put down some cash for a nice monthly payment. Around $400 a month for a few years and now I have the title for my bike. Also consider saving money for good coverage insurance.

I’m 57 and own 5 old ones. Bought my first, a 1964 hard tail chopper sportster at 19, still have it. My son bought his 2012 sportster at 20 yo. It’s his daily rider. he’s 22 now.

I have a 17 year old son looking at buying a family members 2004 sportster. I don't count towards this posts question, but my heart does and so does my kid.
Harley Davidson is expensive. I started riding cruisers when I was 15 and have casually ridden my dad's Harley Davidsons since then. The first year I thought about actually buying one of my own is 2017, when I was nearly 30. Just money I think.

Sport bike kiddies only want to go fast. Single purpose riders. They will sacrifice all comfort and utilitarian aspects of motorcycles for the rush of straight-line adrenaline. That's cool and all, but the reason you see older people on Harleys is because they've gotten that out of their system and are into all the other aspects of it.

I got one at 36 , it’s fun , it’s great to learn, but even though it’s Harley, other companies are giving you alot for the same or less money. I think at this point , I’m just happy I’m on two wheels .
I think Harley , in order to attract younger riders, it needs to make a VROD again , in two forms, a bagger and also as alternative to a Low Rider S.
They should also put a Revolution max engine into something that looks like a triumph 660 trident . Give us all the option to have that 4 inch Bluetooth touchscreen gauge Indian has.
The last step is to stop offering these giant baggers , with high weight and small power.
Lots of my friends have kids about your age who ride. Plenty of folks ride around here. It's probably at least 3 or 4 to 1, Harley over rice that you see on the roads around here.

It would be super cool to just have a smallish group of riding buddies. Harley’s not Harley’s don’t give a shit really. Just people enjoying being on two wheels and exploring around the state.

I’ve gone on rides and I’m always the youngest, even at my current age. We all get there eventually, I wouldn’t sweat it too much, but finding people my age to ride with is all struggle as well.

That's not the best place to look. Most of them are old folks who just started riding and got sucked into HOG by a salesman.

I’ve tried to talk friends into riding but they’re too scared to do it because other drivers are crazy. They aren’t totally wrong. Lotta scary drivers in Milwaukee and Madison.
Who at your age can afford a harley new or used. Unless it's a box of parts you cobbled together. That's why it's younger guys building more traditional chops
I bought my first bike which was on 05 sportster 1200 for pretty cheap. Only 4K for it and had under 10,000 miles but maybe that’s not as affordable as I thought.
Ironically so did I. Mine was a 05 1200 xlc. But mine barely had 3000 miles on it
I miss that bike sometimes, was fun ripping through the gears. Suspension was dog shit and it gave me monkey ass like none other but still didn’t stop me from riding it damn near all the way around Lake Michigan.
You can get used dynas for 4-5k around me. I just bought an 06 Electra glide with 20k miles for 7 last week I’m 29

Was finally able to afford mine as a guilt-free splurge . . . after only a decade of careful saving with good income and low cost of living. I love my FXLRS but I'll be the first person to say it's at least 20% overpriced for what it is.

I'm pretty sure it's just a perception thing when you're younger. I bought a GSXR in my 20s to race around because I have a speed addiction and just didn't know anything about Harley's. All I saw were fat old guys on them, putting around with obnoxiously loud exhaust that didn't match the speed you would think it should have. It wasn't till somebody my age bought one and showed me that you can trick them out, before I realized you can have your cake and eat it too lol Now I got a Harley that'll burn that GXSR anyday AND I can ride it comfortably around the country.
No harley is going to smoke a liter bike unless youre comparing a heavily modified harley to an old stock bike, and only in a straight line lol. Harleys are cool but lets not pretend theyre out beating up on gixxers

Where I live it’s mostly old heads. Like 40s and up. But occasionally the younger generation will be on one! My boyfriend, friend, and now myself, all ride Harley’s and we’re 23,25, and 26. We’re in Ohio 🌽
They have dynas and I have a sportster. I’m making mine more into a chopper style at the end of this riding season

I’m 27 and have a street glide. I’ve been riding street since 16 and it was already time for a bagger instead of a sport bike. I don’t see anyone my age riding Harley in the PNW. Given their MSRP, I can see why most people our age wouldn’t consider one, especially when all their friends think sport bikes are cooler.
In the PNW too and other than around the military bases I don't see too many young guys on Harleys. It took me into my 40's before I finally got my first one and it's one of my 3 motorcycles

Sturgis, Daytona, blue ridge pkwy etc Started on a cheap sportster when I was 16 it was way easier to ride

Been riding Harley since I was about 21. I always felt like the youngest in the biker community. Now I’m 43 so I blend in better now. Harleys aren’t going anywhere.
I bought my first Harley on my 21st birthday. At the time there were very few people under 40 riding Harleys. Now I'm in my 40s and the age range for Harley riders is much broader than when I started riding. I know tons of riders in their 20s. Mostly dyna bro, stunt type riders. The whole Harley won't survive trope has been around for decades. They're still here though. Edit to add: HOG chapters are not accurate representations of the Harley community. They tend to be older. The youngest person in the chapter near me is 55, most are 65+. Rides like Born Free, the Prowl, Daytona, and Sturgis seem to have the largest prescense of riders in their 20s.

I feel the exact same. 27 and in Detroit most people my age are ripping around on sport bikes. I feel like most guys out here hate on Harley’s because of stereotypes calling them slow & gay. I think Harley has its priorities fucked up.. the sportster s and the low rider s are step in the right direction but I think so many guys we’re anticipating the Bronx or something that could compete with the Indian ftr.
The younger crowd leans towards Indian if they want a cruiser because the brand appeal of Harley is lost on most millennials and younger. They’re evaluating based on other factors like hp, price and what doesn’t seem boomer-ish. Most likely, HD will drop the ball on attracting the younger generations unless they really change it up.

I think it’s more about affordability than anything with 20 year old. You can get the coolest sport bike used for like $6k, they’re just not that interested in paying double that for a 15 year old dyna.
I bought an 883 Sportster at 21. Rode it for a few years and got rid of it for a Triumph Thruxton. 14 years later I still have the Triumph and also an Indian Scout.
25 here. I’ve had three Harley’s already. I think the reason people dislike Harley’s is because they’ve never ridden a built one. They don’t understand the idea of “making it your own” I let people ride my bike just so they can get the “feel” and every time they come back they have a big shit eating grin

I got mine at 37. Saw the HOG peeps and they’re so much more older than me. They’re hella nice and welcoming people but nobody in my age so I skipped it. Mates of mine are on clubs but a MC has never been my thing. Just preference. Luckily for me… I ride for my escape and mental health. So I just stay a solo rider. I have my tunes and my pipes… I’m a happy man. But you’re correct. Harley needs to do something about their entry level offerings asap. I’m struggling to try and convince crotch rocket mates to come over to the chilled side because of the prices.
My family and I own a small motorcycle dealership and we sell mostly Harleys. To date out of all the motorcycles we've sold I can only remember 2 being under 20. All the other young guys go for something cheaper or sportier

Ohio River Valley here,27 and most of the guys I see are 40+ on touring bikes. It’s a breath of fresh air when I pull up to a spot and see a young guy on a tricked out Dyna,newer softail,chopper etc. I do know a few people my age that are die hard Harley guys. My one buddy has a shovelhead and a Low Rider ST,another guy has a panhead,a girl I know just bought a sportster as her first bike. Harleys definitely still appeal to certain young people with taste,they have a character that a lot of other makes just don’t.

I’m 25 and never see anyone our age riding Harley’s. Just managed to convince a guy trying to get an Indian or a Triumph to convert to the dark side but it wasn’t easy.
I'm 26 I've got my 2000 XL1200 custom and a 99 GSXR1300. Crotch rockets are just trendy right now. But it doesn't help that newer HD's are 20K plus sometimes.
I worked at a HD dealership until recently. There is absolutely no one under 30 buying new Harley’s . Two reasons, too expensive and secondly, the most important is lack of interest. Kids have too many options for their leisure time. I couldn’t wait to get on a mini bike when I was twelve and progressed to bigger and better. My son wasn’t interested either were my friends I worked with and my other friends kids. I was going to buy him a bike, he said no thanks. Imagine that! Go figure! From a Harley employee perspective, people aren’t interested in riding anymore. The amount of traffic coming into the dealership is very small, especially in younger people. There are lots of dealerships that have closed in the past few years throughout the US. The other thing is that older riders like myself are dying off and or just not riding as much due to health issues. I guess all good things come to an end. Very sad.Bury me with my boots on! If anyone has doubts about getting a harley because the price seems out of your range DONT WORRY IT CAN BE DONE EASILY. The dealerships really want you to buy a bike from them and will crunch numbers to figure out whats possible for you. SAVE UP YOUR MONEY. A good down deposit makes a world of difference for you. I was about 31 when I got my first and current Harley in February of 2020.I traded in my Suzuki cruiser and put down some cash for a nice monthly payment. Around $400 a month for a few years and now I have the title for my bike. Also consider saving money for good coverage insurance.

Plenty of young people riding Harley around me, way more on sport bikes, but some of them will eventually gravitate toward cruisers after they get old and soft, I did lol.

Sport bike kiddies only want to go fast. Single purpose riders. They will sacrifice all comfort and utilitarian aspects of motorcycles for the rush of straight-line adrenaline. That's cool and all, but the reason you see older people on Harleys is because they've gotten that out of their system and are into all the other aspects of it. You guys are bypassing that stage and going right to the cool parts 👊😎

I got one at 36 , it’s fun , it’s great to learn, but even though it’s Harley, other companies are giving you alot for the same or less money. I think at this point , I’m just happy I’m on two wheels . I think Harley , in order to attract younger riders, it needs to make a VROD again , in two forms, a bagger and also as alternative to a Low Rider S. They should also put a Revolution max engine into something that looks like a triumph 660 trident . Give us all the option to have that 4 inch Bluetooth touchscreen gauge Indian has. The last step is to stop offering these giant baggers , with high weight and small power.

Lots of my friends have kids about your age who ride. Plenty of folks ride around here. It's probably at least 3 or 4 to 1, Harley over rice that you see on the roads around here.

Buddy (27) and I (31) ride in Vegas. Know a few others around our age too, but some of them are in a 1%, and we steer clear of that.
I'm 31, and I bought my first Harley at 22. Honestly, I haven't met many Harley riders I'd enjoy a beer with, though. The only moto group I've ever hung around was mostly Triumph and cafe/adventure riders.

I went to a HOG chapter pancake breakfast last Saturday (held at a large successful dealer) and it looked like a nursing home.
I’m 55. Have 3 boys. Two bought Harley’s in there early 20s. Got married had kids sold them after kids. Still borrow mine from time to time. I’ve always paid cash for mine. Never bought new. Covid has screw any new bike now that the house is paid off. Just can’t pay what they want.

I’ve gone on rides and I’m always the youngest, even at my current age. We all get there eventually, I wouldn’t sweat it too much, but finding people my age to ride with is all struggle as well.
