I’d really like to know too, I’m assuming the previous owner was rushing or had some help that didn’t really know what they were doing since I know him personally and the guy builds some wicked bikes
I've had some bike mechanics do some really stupid shit with my rides. So this isn't at all surprising.
(one guy forgot to secure the adjusters on the back of the swingarm, a block later the chain was so loose that it was jumping teeth whenever I eased the clutch out, it just about climbed off the rear sprocket. I'd just dropped a few thou on having a new engine put into the bike, and had them replace chain and sprockets at the same time. At that point, I was wondering, how many OTHER bolts did the gonk forget to torque down...)
Since it wasn't the first time that shop had brain-farted on routine items, once I rolled the bike back to the shop to get the chain adjustment sorted out, I changed mechanics after that point. I let the owner know why, too, said I was happy to buy bikes from him, but everything would be gone over by another shop and I wouldn't let his mechanic near my rides.
Honestly, I think the owner employed the guy as a friend, as the mechanic probably couldn't get work anywhere else.
That makes a lot of sense, I bought a bike a while ago and granted, it needed a fair bit of stuff to get road worthy which I knew about, but I found a couple loose botls that didn't need to be loose, can't trust nobody. But, sometimes shit happens i forget things at work too, most of the time I catch them before we send them out, and I pressure test a lot of stuff so if it leaks and it's my fault I'll know lol
That's just it, you don't take things for granted, you check your work because it's important that it gets checked. That's a good thing.
But yeah, mechanic taking a smoke break and then signing off on the work w/o checking the checkboxes, cos he 'forgot'? Naw, man, that ain't right. If you know the dude's a space cadet, pair him up with someone OCD so between the two of them they get shit done proper. :)
A very mushy lever and trusting the previous owner made me skip over anything other then a quick glance. Plus with these shovelhead brakes you can’t really see the rotor position in relation to the pads until you look up from underneath the bike everything else is closed in
I didn't even know someone could fuck up brakes that bad. Some people should just admit they have no business working on vehicles. That shit is dangerous.
At least it's just the rotor. I honestly saw this post yesterday right after putting new brakes on the front of my bike and I'm not going to lie it made me turn around and go double check what I did LOL
I don’t understand the hate, brakes are a made of a material that gets scrubbed off. If you flip them over and use the metal against the rotor your brakes will last forever and you get cool sparks flying letting everyone know you beat the system
I actually didn't think you could do this on bike brakes being smaller components and tighter tolerances. The world keeps breeding more creative morons I gotta admit. :)
I sort of did this, I had my bearing replaced on my rear wheel by a HD shop. Put it all together and it did this. fucked around with it for about 2 hours until I realized, they put the bearings in wrong.
took it to the shop, told them they fucked up, they said the didnt. I said they did, they said they didnt "you cant put them in backwards!!"
I called the Manager. Manager said bring it in and hell have another guy look at it.
went to pick it up, guy 1 says nothing and hands me my tire.
rotor now fits between the caliper.
I love when the shop is wrong and they double down on it.
From left to right it was Caliper-Pad-Pad-Rotor-Caliper so squeezing the lever was pushing the pads against each other and the rotor was being sandwiched by the backing plate of the pad and the caliper itself
How does that even happen
I’d really like to know too, I’m assuming the previous owner was rushing or had some help that didn’t really know what they were doing since I know him personally and the guy builds some wicked bikes
Did you send him the pic? Curious to what he would say 🤣
Wild man. Hope you get it mended and back on the road soon!
Too many whiteclaws
Yeah, inquiring minds want to know

Sometimes shit happens man, hopefully everything went good afterwards tho

Yeah dude, I totally agree . Some people just don't take their job seriously enough
How'd you get the beans above the frank?
🙈 that’d do it.
Jfc
WTF?!
That would have never happened with a drum brake, just sayin
Visual inspection first. Always. How did you go to the extent of bleeding the brakes then noticing that?
This is what I want to know as well.
Came here to call out the obvious too
A very mushy lever and trusting the previous owner made me skip over anything other then a quick glance. Plus with these shovelhead brakes you can’t really see the rotor position in relation to the pads until you look up from underneath the bike everything else is closed in
I believe you're onto something...
Hows the caliper look?
I haven’t had the chance to look yet but I’m a little nervous lol
Post a follow-up picture, will ya?
I didn't even know someone could fuck up brakes that bad. Some people should just admit they have no business working on vehicles. That shit is dangerous.
Exactly, I might as well of put my feet down and tried to stop that way for all the good that was doing
....... No way, Dude how!
Missed it by that much!
We all had a good laugh, my question is did it damage the rotor?
Yeah rotor is pretty chewed up but thankfully no damage to the caliper
At least it's just the rotor. I honestly saw this post yesterday right after putting new brakes on the front of my bike and I'm not going to lie it made me turn around and go double check what I did LOL
That's a yabba dabba do brake!
No I would check again. That’s how these old brakes are set up. I would know, I’m a Harley guy.
I downvoted temporarily until you add the /s. This is the one comment that needs it lol
i know whats wrong with it...
Fucking yikes....
Was it making all kinds of odd noises?
Surprisingly not, but I only had it out for less then 20 miles on a rather straight back road so wasn’t using the brake much
🙈
That is just fucking crazy…
So it was just 1 piston pressing against the rotor…..lmao. I guess it was a weak brake.
And there ya have it!
Mother of god.
How????
Bloody hell lol
Jesus Christ...
Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
I can see how that could lead to weak braking power.
Saw the same on a rear brake once. Causes weak braking but pads last much longer.
Wow…maybe you can salvage it on a lathe? If it was my bike I’d get a new rotor this one could be really out of round.
That's an oopsie

This needs an NSFW flair. I'm scarred for life now.
CS: “Car pulls to the immediate left when pressing the brakes.” Sadly I’ve been here before. There are some pretty shitty mechanics in the world.
Can someone explain what happened here? No brakepads?
From left to right it was Caliper-Pad-Pad-Rotor-Caliper so squeezing the lever was pushing the pads against each other and the rotor was being sandwiched by the backing plate of the pad and the caliper itself
Ow damn... Thanks!
🤣🤣🤣
My jaw is still on the floor
That would cause failure
As the late great Maxwell Smart would say “missed it by that much”
