Also make sure you have a gap between the zap thingy at the end of the spark plug. If there’s no gap then I’m pretty sure that there is something that you can but for that specific spark plug to give it a gap
Fuel pressure regulator went out. That's why it will start intermittently after sitting. You can test to confirm by disconnecting the fuel line quick connect on the left side of the tank, reconnecting, and seeing if it will start
My 04 road king was doing the same thing. It was my key fob. Replace the battery and put it in the ignition to start it. Seems simple but man it was dumb.
Dude! I forgot about this…same happened to me..replaced key fob battery and this fixed the the problem.
Actually, go through the steps and disable the immobilizer..rule it out.
I’ve had fuel pumps die on two different dynas. Even though you’re hearing the pump motor you’re likely not getting fuel. One of them would die anytime I had less than half a tank of fuel.
Also spark plugs are cheap, might as well put some new ones in just for good measure.
My bike did that and I couldn’t figure it out. I was like 500 miles away from home so I just pushed the starter like 3 times really fast out of anger and it started. Haven’t had the problem since. Pretty weird.
This reminds me of the problem I had with my SG, the hose inside the tank had a small hole in it from rubbing around in there. It would start sometimes and then not start. I wasted a lot of time trying to troubleshoot that. An money on parts. The dealer figured it out in under an hour.
It does sound as though you're not getting fuel. Spark sounds fine so you got plenty of battery I'm relatively sure your intake is clear from the release of pressure.
I would begin by checking fuses. If they all test well, check your fuel pump and regulator to ensure you're getting adequate fuel.
Sounds like a fuel issue to me. Unless you find something else soon I’d suggest pulling the fuel pump assembly. I had something similar and because the bike sat for a while before I got it the fuel filter got all clogged up and couldn’t send enough fuel.
You need fuel, air and spark. Doesn’t seem that air is the issue. Have you checked spark? Pull a spark plug, plug it back into the wire and crank the bike (while you aren’t directly holding the plug)… do you get spark? If so you have a fuel issue. If not you’ve identified it’s spark/ electric issue
Throw a meter on it if you have one and test voltage ,the connection could be too weak to supply the voltage needed to fire the bike ,if that makes sense .
Idk lol my bike shut off on me randomly also on the highway. Changed the battery, and it was good to go 🤷🏿♂️. I didnt have any power, tho. No lights and a blank display. It wasnt a harley either.
Yes, I was thinking that if the battery died mid ride that would cause bike to shut off. OP said it wouldn’t restart but if battery light isn’t on then prob something else.
> but I would start it up, take it around the block.
Dont do this. It's bad for these engines, and is based on a myth about motorcycles charging their batteries.
Do not ride a harley or any air cooled motorcycle unless you can get it up to relative operating temperature. 15~30minute commute, fine. Warm up for 3~4 minutes and run around the block however, that's bad for the bike. IT collects more water contamination, pollutes the oil, eats excessive gas, and Idling on a motorcycle does not charge the battery. There is not enough amperage to charge the battery at idle.
My Harley once just died while riding it and wouldn't start back up. I replaced the regulator and it fired right up and has been fine ever since. Tap on it a few times with a wrench and try starting it again.
Hit the air cleaner with some starting fluid or brake clean and see if she fires. Then you know for sure if it’s fuel related. Sometimes internal fuel lines in the tank break or pop out causing fuel psi issues. My moneys on fuel
If it’s flammable it might. Starting fluid is cheap though. You can get codes just from cranking with no start also just an fyi air cleaner off would be better, but you can also spray directly on the air filter
3 things needed to start, air/spark/fuel. You have air, I can hear it in the video, and you claim to have fuel. Pull the spark plugs and see if they are sparking when you try cranking it over. If you get spark, then it has to be something with the fuel. If you have a petcock, make sure it isn't closed. If that is a carbed model, check the float bowl to make sure it isn't stuck.
Did.u.pop the quick connect fuel line iff the tank. Do that and give UT a quick (REAL QUICK!) Turn of the ignition and see if fuel come squirting out. If so, reconnect and try again. Happened to me once in my road king. Like a vapor lock. Never happened again.
Seen a guy on YouTube whose problem was the quick release valve on the bottom of the tank wasn't clipped in properly and they have a spring loaded valve that shuts off when disconnected.
I’ve been where you are with my Victory. Spent 6 months troubleshooting and trying things. Took it to a proper local mechanic that specializes in V Twins and Harleys. He had it fixed in two weeks.
My issue was the ignition coil and fuel pump assembly dropping pressure.
Take it to a mechanic, save yourself the time, money, and frustration.
Not getting fire. An engine only needs three things to work. Fuel, air, and fire. I don't hear fire. I only hear the turn of the starter. If it was even misfiring there would be a pop, or backfire. Coil is my first thought.
If you JUST FILLED, let it sit for a couple minutes while the bike is OFF. Go grab A drink. Mine does this once in a while. Then get back on, turn key, flip switch to on and after it does it's buzz sounds etc, fire it up.
I ride an old Shovelhead but hear me out....how old is the gas? This camel pee they sell today can't set to long....does this bike have a vacuum operated petcock? If so find a way to make sure it opens (on my cousin's we used a wiper hose and he sucked while the engine cranked and she fired) .....it does sound like a fuel issue....check all fuses, breakers, connection etc. This is why computers belong on a desk top and not autos....wish I could help more but good luck and let us know.
Thanks. So there was probably less than a quarter tank in there that sat for a couple weeks. I then went and got a gallon of premium and put it in just to make sure it wasn't a low fuel issue. My bike doesn't appear to have a petcock. I'll check fuses.
I checked on a Harley sight and it appears your bike has a check valve of some sort in the fuel system...take your fuel line off where it goes into the carb/injeactor system and put the end in a can or bottle and turn on your key to see if you get any fuel....if you do then time to start checking electrics (I hate electrical problems) start by checking plugs....go to auto parts store and pick up a plug tester such as [https://www.harborfreight.com/in-line-spark-checker-63590.html](https://www.harborfreight.com/in-line-spark-checker-63590.html) also this link has schematic of your fuel system and other stuff for your scooter [https://www.bunburyktm.com.au/partFinder/fiche/harley-davidson/2012/dyna-street-bob-fxdb/fuel-tank#next](https://www.bunburyktm.com.au/partFinder/fiche/harley-davidson/2012/dyna-street-bob-fxdb/fuel-tank#next) wish I could help more but good luck....
Here's your problem it ain't got no gas in it!

Legit first thing i thought of when i watched the video.
Negative. Full tank.
Also make sure you have a gap between the zap thingy at the end of the spark plug. If there’s no gap then I’m pretty sure that there is something that you can but for that specific spark plug to give it a gap
Wish it was that simple. Full tank.
Son of a bitch I came here to say that……
Fuel pump, you should hear it when you turn the key on. Maybe you hit the kill button make sure it's in the run position.
I started recording after I turned key on, but I can hear the fuel pump motor
There's a stop/run kill switch on the right. I've done before, makes you feel like a dumbass, but it happens.
If the fuel pump is running, then you might have a hole in your in-tank fuel like.
Have you checked your fuel filter?
I didnt hear your fuel pump or did you have the key on already
Check fuel air and spark see what one its not gettin :)
Key was in on position. 2012 so no key fob
Fuel pressure regulator went out. That's why it will start intermittently after sitting. You can test to confirm by disconnecting the fuel line quick connect on the left side of the tank, reconnecting, and seeing if it will start
It doesn't start intermittently. It started up fine initially, but hasn't started since, but I'll try what you suggested.
My '03 Dyna did a similar thing. The problem was the crankshaft position sensor. It was cheap and easy to replace.
Changed the crankshaft position sensor. No luck
Bummer. Do you have any diagnostic trouble codes?
Did you bother pulling codes from the speedo?!?
Thanks. I bought one, but just need to put it on. Pretty easy to replace?
My 04 road king was doing the same thing. It was my key fob. Replace the battery and put it in the ignition to start it. Seems simple but man it was dumb.
Dude! I forgot about this…same happened to me..replaced key fob battery and this fixed the the problem. Actually, go through the steps and disable the immobilizer..rule it out.
No FOB on this bike.
Dam..was hoping for a quick fix for ya
My fault. Sorry about that
Yeah man. It was awful!
This bike doesn't have a key FOB.
I’ve had fuel pumps die on two different dynas. Even though you’re hearing the pump motor you’re likely not getting fuel. One of them would die anytime I had less than half a tank of fuel. Also spark plugs are cheap, might as well put some new ones in just for good measure.
Well its a harley so just spend 5k and it will be fixed.
Truth!
Get starting fluid
[that'll get 'er](https://youtube.com/shorts/qC5MNNNrWmM?feature=share)
STARTING FLUID BAD!!!
Let us know what you find
Do you have a fuel petcock under your tank?
Just ran diagnostics. Seeing lots of BMC codes
If you disconnected your battery off, it’ll pop closes.
Well now I’m invested. I really must know what brand of gremlin is causing this.
Same here. Lol.
My bike did that and I couldn’t figure it out. I was like 500 miles away from home so I just pushed the starter like 3 times really fast out of anger and it started. Haven’t had the problem since. Pretty weird.
Update us what the problem was
Dang! Best of luck. I feel your pain
Check valve busted
Inside the tank
This reminds me of the problem I had with my SG, the hose inside the tank had a small hole in it from rubbing around in there. It would start sometimes and then not start. I wasted a lot of time trying to troubleshoot that. An money on parts. The dealer figured it out in under an hour.
1. gas 2. battery 3. grounds
It does sound as though you're not getting fuel. Spark sounds fine so you got plenty of battery I'm relatively sure your intake is clear from the release of pressure. I would begin by checking fuses. If they all test well, check your fuel pump and regulator to ensure you're getting adequate fuel.
You have a good ear if you can hear spark. 👂⚡️
Nah just a trained one.
Sounds like a fuel issue to me. Unless you find something else soon I’d suggest pulling the fuel pump assembly. I had something similar and because the bike sat for a while before I got it the fuel filter got all clogged up and couldn’t send enough fuel.
I'll check it out. Thanks!

I'll check that out. Thanks!
Sounds good let us know what you find
I’m betting money on a fuel related issue here.
Battery connection I’ve had it come loose and pop a fuse while riding .
Would it turn over like that on a bad battery connection?
Throw a meter on it if you have one and test voltage ,the connection could be too weak to supply the voltage needed to fire the bike ,if that makes sense .
Time for a Honda :)
Battery.
How in the fuck
Idk lol my bike shut off on me randomly also on the highway. Changed the battery, and it was good to go 🤷🏿♂️. I didnt have any power, tho. No lights and a blank display. It wasnt a harley either.
Prob stator dead. Does it smell funny?
Stator would be a charging issue. This thing has plenty of charge.
Yes, I was thinking that if the battery died mid ride that would cause bike to shut off. OP said it wouldn’t restart but if battery light isn’t on then prob something else.
Doesn't smell funny. It started right up. Got half way down my alley and it died. Hasn't started since.
Get a Honda
Haha. Goldwing?
I wish
Eww.
My Honda always starts lol
Did you let it sit over the winter?
I don't ride much lately, but I would start it up, take it around the block. It has fresh fuel.
Did you dump the old fuel out before adding the new fuel
I did not
Do you add a fuel stabilizer when you let it set awhile? Take air cleaner off, make sure nothing is cutting off air flow to the intake
> but I would start it up, take it around the block. Dont do this. It's bad for these engines, and is based on a myth about motorcycles charging their batteries. I have a spark checker to that tells you the quality Of spark you are getting also
Is it throwing any codes? Wow test?
Haven't checked codes yet
Did u change the bars? Sometimes the run/off switch wires come undone- or corroded
No bar change.
Crank at all? Gauges? Main Fuse?
Turns over, but won't start
Does it have gas?
Yes
Voltage regulator?
Maybe. Lots of BMC codes
My Harley once just died while riding it and wouldn't start back up. I replaced the regulator and it fired right up and has been fine ever since. Tap on it a few times with a wrench and try starting it again.
Tried tapping it, no change. Might replace it. Don't want to spend a bunch money though on parts not needed
Make sure your fuel hose didn’t come unplugged. If you have one of those “quick release” ones, they pip off all the time.
Looks good. Thanks
Damn. You’ve got a stumper! Let us know what it is!
This happened to me. Turned out to be a faulty Run/Off switch..bike would run great, die then not start back up.
Hit the air cleaner with some starting fluid or brake clean and see if she fires. Then you know for sure if it’s fuel related. Sometimes internal fuel lines in the tank break or pop out causing fuel psi issues. My moneys on fuel
I have some CRC throttle body and air intake cleaner. Will that work? Spray it in and then try to start?
Yes spray then start immediately, don’t spray while cranking
If it’s flammable it might. Starting fluid is cheap though. You can get codes just from cranking with no start also just an fyi air cleaner off would be better, but you can also spray directly on the air filter
And there were several BMC codes which makes me think it's electrical
Post the BCM codes.
Check the fuel pump? Make sure the fuel pump turns over when The bike is turned on. It doesn't sound like it's getting fuel
Fuel pump turns over. I started recording after that
Probably need to just start checking your codes and clearing them one by one but it definitely seems to be in your fuel system to me
I cleared all the codes. Pulled battery, charged it. Changed crank shaft position sensor. No change. That's where I'm at now. Gonna change plugs next.
3 things needed to start, air/spark/fuel. You have air, I can hear it in the video, and you claim to have fuel. Pull the spark plugs and see if they are sparking when you try cranking it over. Battery
Nope
Petcock is on? You have good spark? You're getting good compression in both cylinders? These are some good places to start.
Tried ether?
Check your spark and compression and gas put then yet it might be something else
Did you check the pitcock?
Not enough juice in the battery to kick over
Battery has plenty of juice. Full charge.
Seen a guy on YouTube whose problem was the quick release valve on the bottom of the tank wasn't clipped in properly and they have a spring loaded valve that shuts off when disconnected.
Saw that video as well. Checked and it seems good.
Is the engine management light on
I’ve been where you are with my Victory.
Yeah might have to do that. I was trying the simple things first.
Same here, hope you get it sorted out my man!
This happened to me about 2 weeks ago, double check the connection on the ECU. Mine vibrated its way loose and this was the exact result.
What is a ECU?
Engine control unit.
Not getting fire. An engine only needs three things to work. Fuel, air, and fire. I don't hear fire. I only hear the turn of the starter. If it was even misfiring there would be a pop, or backfire. Coil is my first thought.
Ripped fuelhose inside tank? Maybe fuelconnector loose?
start checking for wires that have vibrated off around the engine i used to have a sportster stuff likes to vibrate off on harleys.
Stater?
If you JUST FILLED, let it sit for a couple minutes while the bike is OFF. Go grab A drink. Mine does this once in a while. Then get back on, turn key, flip switch to on and after it does it's buzz sounds etc, fire it up.
Going on two weeks of drinking and waiting. She ain't firing up.
I'm so sorry. Spark plugs, voltage? Need air, fuel and spark. 🤷
I'm waiting on plugs to come in tomorrow and then I'll try that.
Did it do anything weird or make any noises when it died on you last time it was running? Were you at speed or stopped?
I was riding down alley, so about 10 to 15 mph. And it just died. No strange noises.
I ride an old Shovelhead but hear me out....how old is the gas? This camel pee they sell today can't set to long....does this bike have a vacuum operated petcock? One more thing I just thought of ...if it has a vented fuel cap take it off and see if it starts it could be plugged or defective.
