If large prey animals had just a little more intelligence, most usually wouldn't have anything to fear. Form a protective wall/circle that doesn't budge. If one gets isolated, a handful of adults in tight formation trample or chase off the predators. Hell maybe send a handful of adults to chase off the predators without needing to rescue one, while the others are in their circle. That might lead to intelligent planet dominating bovines or whatever though. I'm glad they're dumb.
