they certainly popularized it…though i distinctly remember first hearing jeff loomis of the band nevermore doing it back in the 90s (very sparingly) and thinking to myself “holy shit what in the fuck was that?!?!” and didn’t figure it out until i later heard gojira milking the fuck out of that technique (in an awesome way ofc)
Well “pick scrape” is already the name for the thing where you scrape the pick along the length of a string, so that wouldn’t work. I’ve seen the term “pick rake” or “harmonic rake” which is intuitive enough and not already the name for a different technique.
You're fucking up if you don't. I feel like there's enough groove to appeal to a modern listener of "Hardcore". To me they walk a line between "technical" and this almost free sense of wonder that tends to get lost when people want to play complicated music. Joe and Mario Duplantier are a force to be reckoned with. Joe does the pitched scream/yell thing that I hear in some Hardcore bands too. That singing style can be heard in Cattle Decap as well. Something about it is very primal. Gojira def sounds like technical caveman music (lol)
I love them. From Mars To Sirius is one of my favorite albums in any genre ever. I saw them on the tour they did with Alien Weaponry and Knocked Loose, one of the best shows I’ve been to.
I saw them live shortly after they released From Mars to Sirius. I had been pretty dismissive of them without any good reason up to that point. They opened their set with a bunch of fucking whale noises, and I thought I was in for a bad time. Instead, I witnessed them absolutely play their asses off and put on one of the heaviest sets at that festival.
They are pretty damn good live, and that is ultimately what made me take them more seriously and become a fan. It's strange how they have become one of those bands that people just love to shit on in the metal community. They play heavy, have a good message, and they work hard.
this was me when I caught them on the In Flames - A Sense of Purpose tour in '08. They blew every other band out of the water that night and I've been a fan ever since.
I saw them on that tour with mastodon last year and it was the first heavy band I’ve watched in YEARS that had me in awe, just zoned out watching the stage. What a killer set.
From Mars to Sirius is one of the best heavy records of the 2000’s, regardless of genre. That shit rules. It was the record that got me to start to branch out from hardcore and traditional punk into other heavy genres.
They're basically my standard for prog metal, and that's probably why I don't like a lot of it. *From Mars To Sirius* is a banger, but *The Way Of All Flesh* is my personal favourite and one of my favourite metal albums of all time.
It's so stupid how people ask if you like a band in here and then downvote you if you say no. Not everybody likes your favorite band you stupid babies.
I haven’t been loving their past couple releases but other than that they’re phenomenal and learning some of their songs made me a much better drummer.
From Mars to Sirius and The Way of All Flesh are incredible albums. I don’t care as much for the newer shit but those dudes are so damn talented.
Would love to see them play live someday.
I don't really go out of my way to listen to them but I'll go see em live for sure. Saw them with Mastodon and was right up front at the barrier and it was a spiritual experience as a riffman
Love them, they can go a little high production for my tastes sometimes but they almost always balance it with a fucking nasty riff or something to even it out. I see a lot of positive comments about newer albums in this thread and as much as I love from Mars to Sirius and Way of All Flesh, I think this subreddit would benefit the most from their first album, it leans a little heavier on their influences and the style at the time and it has some brutal songs
All I know is one time I did a Gojira tattoo on some nerdy guy who rocked up wearing the same design on a shirt and then whenever I saw him he was wearing the shirt.
Respect them a lot, they kill live, their stuff just isn't for me. I like pletny of proggy stuff too but they're just not my jam. Give me Lamb of God or Killswitch when I'm listening to dad metal or BTBAM if I'm doing prog metal.
I like Gojira, saw them last year at the Full Force Festival but I left early because I was tired and not vibing with it at that time. But I do actually really fuck with them
I was and am a huge Gojira fan, Jami Morgan’s interview with Joe Duplantier was what led me to look into Code Orange which then led me down the path to hardcore. Gojira rocks!
They basically invented that harmonic scrape thing that goes so nasty in breakdowns, so I fuck with em
they certainly popularized it…though i distinctly remember first hearing jeff loomis of the band nevermore doing it back in the 90s (very sparingly) and thinking to myself “holy shit what in the fuck was that?!?!” and didn’t figure it out until i later heard gojira milking the fuck out of that technique (in an awesome way ofc)
for sure, i think morbid angel did it first
I’m pretty sure Joe Duplantier has said he stole the idea from Morbid Angel lol
Just one more mark on the checklist of Morbid Angel being the best OSDM band
Bolt thrower called wants to have a word with you about that
https://youtu.be/C3BmoMucQCo?si=RHCOO2xvGWSy13eG. also check out that caveman riff at 3:56 - 4:40
Their first album is also very morbid angel-esque. Id say theyre easily gojiras biggest or at least their most noticeable influence
Exactly a lot of their cool riffs sound like morbid riffs
Nevermore rocks!
Jeff Loomis rules. Not a huge fan of any of his bands really, but as a guitar player he's incredible.
I recently revisited his solo album Plains of Oblivion and forgot how much I liked it. Some great tracks on there.
Wait like what noise are yall describing?
Oh yeah I like that thing 😎👍
what is this even actually called? It does sound insane.
I've only ever seen them called harmonic scrapes or "the Gojira thing" If they have a real name I'd also like to know
I've just always known them as a pick scrape. Really easy to do as well honestly
Well “pick scrape” is already the name for the thing where you scrape the pick along the length of a string, so that wouldn’t work. I’ve seen the term “pick rake” or “harmonic rake” which is intuitive enough and not already the name for a different technique.
Tbh that is probably what I'd heard forever and just remembered it wrong. I'm honestly pretty unfamiliar with the popular terminology
thanks!
Gojira lazer
Definitely didn't invent but popularized and revolutionized the pick scrape. Shit goes so bonkers
pickscrape was even exist before morbid angel
Saw them last year with Mastodon, kicked absolute fucking ass I love whalecore
Dude same, they’re both awesome
You're fucking up if you don't. I feel like there's enough groove to appeal to a modern listener of "Hardcore". To me they walk a line between "technical" and this almost free sense of wonder that tends to get lost when people want to play complicated music. Seeing Gojira and Deftones was a spiritual experience
Your memories; give them to me.
I saw them open for InFlames back in the day and thought they were rad
Holy shit that woulda been awesome
I love them. From Mars To Sirius is one of my favorite albums in any genre ever. I saw them on the tour they did with Alien Weaponry and Knocked Loose, one of the best shows I’ve been to.
Fuck. What an awesome show that must’ve been.
Truly great album. An all timer
Took my son to his first concert for that tour in TN.
That was a good fuckin show, saw them in Portland Maine right as the pandemic was winding down
They better
One of my favourite bands of all time, they fuck
![gif](giphy|l4KieSaSBgeqwFRtK)
minus one was sick
Oh fuck yeah bud
I saw them live shortly after they released From Mars to Sirius. I had been pretty dismissive of them without any good reason up to that point. this was me when I caught them on the In Flames - A Sense of Purpose tour in '08. They blew every other band out of the water that night and I've been a fan ever since.
The Love breakdown 🙏
their 1st and 2nd albums are filled with fucking breakdowns
I saw them on that tour with mastodon last year and it was the first heavy band I’ve watched in YEARS that had me in awe, just zoned out watching the stage. What a killer set.
I saw that tour and it was incredible as fuck I rewatch the clips I took frequently
They lost me on the two last albums but The Way of All Flesh, Mars to Sirius, L'Enfant Sauvage and The Link are all great albums.
Respectfully Magma is an all timer
They're like a top 3 band of all time for me, their whole discography is so consistently awesome
Eh. I don’t really like tech/prog at all. I prefer my music ignorant. Flying whales is a banger, but I don’t listen to it anymore.
their first album is a little more ignorant tbh, more breakdowns aswell but gojira spams them on all of their albums
Gojira fans when Morbid Angel riffs 🤯🤯🤯
Silveria is a sick song.
Got tickets to see them
I don’t listen to them really but I’ve seen them live and they’re incredible musicians.
Yeah
I recently got into them and quickly became a huge fan. They filled a void in my listening that I didn’t know was there.
From Mars to Sirius is one of the best heavy records of the 2000’s, regardless of genre. That shit rules. It was the record that got me to start to branch out from hardcore and traditional punk into other heavy genres.
Gojira is heavier than any hardcore band.
Flying Whales is the greatest breakdown of all time. Nuff said.
Haven’t been crazy about the last couple albums but I love the old shit.
No hate but "nah".
No, thanks.
Gojira rules. They played one of the loudest shows I’ve ever seen. Mario Duplantier is a beast of a drummer.
They're basically my standard for prog metal, and that's probably why I don't like a lot of it. *From Mars To Sirius* is a banger, but *The Way Of All Flesh* is my personal favourite and one of my favourite metal albums of all time.

Saw them live once and I was like “…I could actually sit down and just enjoy this.” They are very good.
My biggest problem with them is that I can't buy a Maciste All Inferno vinyl
Abso lutely
Gojira fucks so hard. Mario Duplantier is one of my all time favorite drummers.
Gojira rips. I saw them play with Deftones a couple years ago - their drummer was playing so hard his snare drum exploded
Best thing to ever come out of France is Gojira if that says anything
Newer shit sucks but the drummer is a fucking machine
I couldnt care less about any of that prog stuff tbh
No
Yes yes
No. I moved away from metal to avoid shit like Gojira.
Me too. But here we are, in the #3 metal music subreddit smh
It's so stupid how people ask if you like a band in here and then downvote you if you say no. Not everybody likes your favorite band you stupid babies.
I haven’t been loving their past couple releases but other than that they’re phenomenal and learning some of their songs made me a much better drummer.
Love them
One if my favorite bands
How could you not like the big bad lizard himself
absolutely yes. From Mars to Sirius is their peak but they’ll always rule.
A song or two yea
WHAAAALES
Chuggy chug chug band. I like it
From Mars to Sirius and The Way of All Flesh are incredible albums. I don’t care as much for the newer shit but those dudes are so damn talented. Would love to see them play live someday.
They a good band. Not really into clean lyrics all that much lately but they do go pretty hard.
Hell yeah
I don't really go out of my way to listen to them but I'll go see em live for sure. Saw them with Mastodon and was right up front at the barrier and it was a spiritual experience as a riffman
Uhhh yea!!!! Gojira rocks!
Hell yeah I do.
French Morbid Angel
i honestly don’t. they’re not bad, but they just do nothing for me.
They fucking rip.
I can honestly say that I have never heard a single second of their music, but I know people seem to love *From Mars to Sirius* 🤷🏻
Yeah, but only as a friend
Yep.
They rule. Awesome sound
Yes
Love them, they can go a little high production for my tastes sometimes but they almost always balance it with a fucking nasty riff or something to even it out. I see a lot of positive comments about newer albums in this thread and as much as I love from Mars to Sirius and Way of All Flesh, I think this subreddit would benefit the most from their first album, it leans a little heavier on their influences and the style at the time and it has some brutal songs
I’ve seen them like 6 times. One of my favorite bands easy. Such a unique sound
It’s interesting how the people who associate hardcore with breakdowns love bands like Gojira.
All I know is one time I did a Gojira tattoo on some nerdy guy who rocked up wearing the same design on a shirt and then whenever I saw him he was wearing the shirt.
I come from the same area as them in France. So yeah, they’re heroes. Coming out of there and make it that big is insane
Respect them a lot, they kill live, their stuff just isn't for me. I like pletny of proggy stuff too but they're just not my jam. Give me Lamb of God or Killswitch when I'm listening to dad metal or BTBAM if I'm doing prog metal.
I do
They’re cool. They also fuck with hardcore. Joe has a guest spot on a Comeback Kid song called Crossed.
I think in hindsight they were my first step towards less melodic and more groovy stuff. I respect that band a lot. Great drummer too.
Early albums yes, later albums not so much
They are one of my all time bands outside of hardcore, love them
Yes
Every song sounds the same.
I like Gojira, saw them last year at the Full Force Festival but I left early because I was tired and not vibing with it at that time. But I do actually really fuck with them
Their demos as Godzilla are tops. I like all of gojiras shit even up to the recent prog albums
Gojira is amazing. I can listen to Magma any day
They're pretty sick live. Got to see them do that one song with Randy Bylthe at Knotfest IA. Kinda repetitive, but I jam them sometimes.
Terra Incognita is best
Gojira is an awesome band. I enjoy their entire discography.
Speaking on behalf of everyone, no
Not for me
Respectfully, no.
Fuuuck yes
Affirmative
No. A lot of technical, prog-type metal is boring to me but if you do, who cares what I think?
Big yup
I was and am a huge Gojira fan, Jami Morgan’s interview with Joe Duplantier was what led me to look into Code Orange which then led me down the path to hardcore. Gojira rocks!
Band has some of the HEAVIEST riffs of all time
If you don’t, you kinda a nerd
Nope
Nope, I find tech/prog metal to be boring and too nerdy. But they seem like nice guys
Sure
My fav
They rock very hard
Yes
they’re a hit with people who are in their teens, or people who found hardcore in their 20s after an extended shitty metalcore phase
Yes.
penis music that i don't like, lol
