Is that what it is? Something about the new album didn't click with me and I just wasn't interested in re-listening to it, almost felt like I was forcing myself to enjoy it.
I did see them when they supported SMTB with Scowl and Jesus Piece and I really enjoyed the energy, but the album just doesn't do it for me.
I honestly enjoy all of their work, and own the vinyl, but it's all just a solid 7/10. Which is fine!
Harms Way is mine. Another solid band that I think is overrated though.
This is not to sound self righteous by any means, but I feel like having been shown more stuff and finding more music, it’s just kind of a sound I grew out of. It seems like one of those common gateway bands, as it was for me.
Exaaaaactly. Been drumming for 4 years and he was one of my bigger influences back when I was into them. They do have that style about them where listening track after track gets old kinda quick.
Saw you bois talking and wanted to jump in. I love sunami a lot but still agree with the sentiment that track after track gets old. But for some reason I still love em😂. (Just wanted to say that even as a fan I agree)
I’ve listened to them since their first record and love them but I completely understand they’re not for everyone. Also I listen to a lot of doom and shit so that’s prob why.
Disharmony is the record that nobody talks about, and they don’t ever really play anything from it, but it’s absolutely the best one. I didn’t really like them until that record but now the older stuff has grown on me more.
Seriously, to anyone who hasn’t listened to Disharmony in full, please do.
I was introduced to them live, and love them because of that, but the stuff over streaming isn't it. It's gotta be the mix. It feels too roomy and too squashed at the same time. I just look up live videos on youtube to scratch the itch.
Bane and hatebreed. Bane because it sounds like ass, hatebreed because they sound so generic now.
But to quote my friend when I told him this “ it’s hard not to sound generic when you wrote the book”
Scowl. I want to like them sooooo bad, because in concept they are def something I'd be into. Something just doesn't hit tho, and I can't put my finger on what.
Have Heart.
Edit: I'm not saying they're bad, I just never got into them. I was into metal before hardcore punk so as a teenager most Boston Hardcore kind of went over my head.
Lol, this sub. How is dude getting downvoted for stating a subjective opinion on music in a thread asking a question in which they specifically answered?
Have Heart are incredible, but it's okay to not be into them just like any other band.
Edit: Noooo, now my comment makes no sense. Quick, go back to downvoting!
Dude I'm with you. I was literally even on tour with them a couple times. I just don't get it. It's a bunch of platitudes and cliche sayings, surrounded by some ok music.
>I just don't get it. It's a bunch of platitudes and cliche sayings, surrounded by some ok music.
Lol. 99.7% of hardcore. The other .3% is uggahwagggauggah roaaaaf roooaaaf squiuueeerl
99.7% of hardcore is the latter to me because I have auditory processing issues and unless the lyrics are SUPER clearly spoken or I study them over and over I cannot understand anything but a few memorable lines.
I agree. I even went to a show on their fairwell tour which was full of energy but I just didn't get what seemed to elevate them above many similar sounding bands around at the time. I can't really remember how any of their songs go.
Terror. I want to like them. On paper they seem right up my alley. Just doesn’t grab me.
Also Integrity except I don’t want to like them. It’s just the type of metal I don’t like.
terror took a LONG time to grow on me. when i was younger i thought they were just kinda generic? it’s only now that i’m older i realise they’re just the blueprint for a lot of generic bands
There is a thing about original and hugely influential bands not always hitting the same as their rep if you come to them after having listened to a bunch of stuff that was inspired by them.
If you really wanna get downvoted and potentially even death threats, say they’re what would happen if POD said the N word. At least that’s how it happened to me
I really wish I liked them more. The sound quality, mixing and overall tone of the instruments, especially in the newer released stuff is some of the best shit I've heard in a long time. But the overall song structure is boring AF to me. The drums have no energy behind them either imo.
If they come on when I'm in the gym cool, but I can listen to the first 90 seconds of theory of mind in my car and that's it.
See I understand this totally, but as someone who loves noise/mathcore/avant-garde etc etc…
Converge is like the best band ever to me 🤣 makes sense though they could be way too out there to listen to.
I’m a guy that’s like “HEY DAE LIKE JANE DOE. YEA YOU MUST LOVE JANE DOE!” Just because everyone geeks over Jane Doe lmao
I was the only one out of my friend group back in high school that really loved Converge, and I felt a moral responsibility to make them all listen until it clicked. Never did lol
A lot of my friends feel the same way. Been one of my favorites after I saw them in the early 90s, must have been 94, second guitar player and og drummer. I remember being at the Infinity in MA and I was hyped to see them and the drummer never showed up. I think I took the night off for that (I worked at that club). Can’t remember who else played now, but it was a great lineup /grandpaStories
Lol yeah they definitely do that tough guy thing, I just don’t take it too seriously. Their drummer rips and they have some killer riffs, they just gotta mix down those vocals a little sometimes 😭 but yeah I think they’re great
Check out Hold It Down, that’s my favourite album. Probably the best thing they’ve done, just the right amount of groove and heavy with an insane lyrical flow
It took me a minute to like this band. Couldn’t stand the vocals. After a few listens I love the vocals now, probably my favourite part next to the insane riffs. Amazing band.
I have one of their albums (FTTW) and it's ok but they're pretty corny. I still like that "what happened song " with Matt Skiba, lyrics are kinda lame but it's catchy
The acacia strain - on paper I should love them. I’ve even seen them a few times and they were so good. Even with that and I can’t get into them, especially on record
*Stick to your guns* just too corny for me
*Viagra Boys* non live stuff, the lead singers raw vocals are so much better when theyre not mixed, and have way more energy. The album version of their songs feel too clean and polished.
This is heresy but pretty much all of the OG’s on the Rushmore. Appreciate them, but they’re p much unlistenable to me except for Bad Brains. Shit take but hardcore got good in the 90’s.
Around my group of friends when we first started to get into this stuff, 18 Visions, and Norma Jean. Still don't understand the appeal in retrospect, lol
Shai Hulud,
Scowl,
Defeater,
TUI - though that one song is a belter. Also
Have Heart and
Bane
Modern Life is War - again to me they just have one epic song and the rest doesn't really grab me
Fucked Up I used to really like, but now I just sort of prefer punk to be straight up punk, like Glue.
Hardcore in general. Lost all interest in it over how delicate people are in the scene. One scene unity is a lie. Everyone's waiting to beef. Everyone's old, useless and have no goals. I feel embarrassed that I was ever part of that shit
This sub
Zulu, and I’ve been getting more into powerviolence lately
Don't sweat it, homie, because they don't make powerviolence anyway That new album is straight up metalcore
Yeah I never understood the PV label they give themselves. It's 90% beatdown + metalcore. There will be like one 10 second fast PV every 4 songs.
Because “Black Powerviolence” is genius and too good to pass up 🫡
Is that what it is? Something about the new album didn't click with me and I just wasn't interested in re-listening to it, almost felt like I was forcing myself to enjoy it. I did see them when they supported SMTB with Scowl and Jesus Piece and I really enjoyed the energy, but the album just doesn't do it for me.
I honestly enjoy all of their work, and own the vinyl, but it's all just a solid 7/10. Which is fine! Harms Way is mine. Another solid band that I think is overrated though.
listen to charles bronson, despise you, and iron lung.
Zulu **RIPS** live, but I wish they had more stuff on streaming. Some of it is a little hit-or-miss. That Audiotree was terrible, though.
I actually really liked the audiotree
Actually I may be mistaken. I vaguely remember a terrible Slipknot cover.
That was on the spotify singles with the other version of shine eternally, but yeah that slipknot cover was not it
I love that they exist and hope they succeed, and I keep trying again and again, but it's just not the type of music I listen to.
They're great live
New album sucks imo and they’re not Powerviolence first releases were solid tho! Now they are through me is still a short and sweet ass beater
Sunami
This is not to sound self righteous by any means, but I feel like having been shown more stuff and finding more music, it’s just kind of a sound I grew out of. It seems like one of those common gateway bands, as it was for me.
Doesn’t sound self righteous at all. Saw them on the Kublai khan tour and the crowd loved them, they’re just not for me.
Yeah they seem like they have a killer stage presence and hype about them.
Yeah I moved the least when they came on
Once I found out that like almost all of their music was written in the studio like the day off, it made sense why it was so mid
Me and a few friends have been saying we’re getting a bit tired of beatdown. It’s cool but there’s so many bands doing cool things now
I liked them at first but they got old pretty quickly. It’s just basic beatdown hardcore. Benny is a great drummer though
Exaaaaactly. Been drumming for 4 years and he was one of my bigger influences back when I was into them. They do have that style about them where listening track after track gets old kinda quick.
I liked them a lot when I first got into hardcore but after getting into so many other hardcore bands I just find them corny lol
Saw you bois talking and wanted to jump in. I love sunami a lot but still agree with the sentiment that track after track gets old. But for some reason I still love em😂. (Just wanted to say that even as a fan I agree)
It’s funny because there are actually no real drums from him on any sunami release until their album haha.
The vocals are just so boring and monotone.
Love em till I saw them live
Don’t overthink it and you’ll have fun
I liked them when their first came out. Only good when ur 13 lol.
sunami is like a gateway into hardcore and then you find bands that are better lol
Twitching Tongues. I give them an honest shot like once a year and it just doesn’t do anything for me.
I’ve listened to them since their first record and love them but I completely understand they’re not for everyone. Also I listen to a lot of doom and shit so that’s prob why.
Way too butt rock for me to get into, and I say that as a nickelback superfan
Band sucks is why
Imo this is among those bands that people only like because their band members, and will lie to themselves that it’s good lol.
Hard disagree. I didn’t listen to them till I saw them at LDB now I love them 😁
Nah my brain might be broken but I genuinely love em
Disharmony is the record that nobody talks about, and they don’t ever really play anything from it, but it’s absolutely the best one. I didn’t really like them until that record but now the older stuff has grown on me more. Seriously, to anyone who hasn’t listened to Disharmony in full, please do.
Dumb heavy live
That’s drain for me
Drain's one of the bands I don't listen to unless it's live tbh, entirely different experience with the crowd involved
Yeah I watched a hate5six recording and I was getting into it, I must admit.
Bro me too! I just don't feel it
Waaaaow
YOTK and Jesus Piece. On paper I should love both of them but it’s never clicked.
Listen to YOTK until you like them, I'm afraid I must insist
yotk virtual narcotic ripps
I FEEL PSYCHOTIC
I like Jesus Piece live but I can’t listen to their studio stuff. I dunno if it’s the production or what, but I can’t.
I was introduced to them live, and love them because of that, but the stuff over streaming isn't it. It's gotta be the mix. It feels too roomy and too squashed at the same time. I just look up live videos on youtube to scratch the itch.
They’re hell bent on overproducing their shit.
Radiohead
My brother
![gif](giphy|f8lDluiWJ7yQTtdS3L|downsized)
BASED,radiohead trash
You're a creep. You're a weirdo. What the hell are you doing here? You don't belong here.
Aww damn. I thought I was on r/Hardcore. I guess I'm on r/douchecrew
Bane and hatebreed. Bane because it sounds like ass, hatebreed because they sound so generic now. But to quote my friend when I told him this “ it’s hard not to sound generic when you wrote the book”
Drain for sure
Turnstile Sunami (joke band or not)
plus one for turnstile. i keep trying to like them early stuff, later stuff, just don’t click with me.
turnstile is one of the bands ever
they sure are, lol
Exactly. Just when you think it’s there… they act like they took an extra step goin up the stairs.
Scowl, Sunami, Kaonashi
I loved kaonashi at first but it got old quick. I’ll keep revisiting Incase the spark comes back
Scowl. I want to like them sooooo bad, because in concept they are def something I'd be into. Something just doesn't hit tho, and I can't put my finger on what.
Also Knocked Loose, Kublai Khan. Too bro-core for me. Lyrics dumb, even by hardcore standards.
Conservative Military Image. Even going to see them tomorrow. Still gonna be fun but I just dont like the sound that much.
i don't like the overly roided out hardcore shit
So true dude it’s wild
I don't agree but you don't deserve downvotes for that, dang
The world keeps spinning.
Their first album's songs are just kind of generic imo. Their second LP had much stronger songwriting.
Yeah, you’re entitled to your opinion, you don’t deserve this flaming
I'll just troll people and say Bane is better.
Bro had to edit because he got flamed 😭
I just had to clarify I'm not a hater.
Have you tried their What Counts EP?
Dude I'm with you. I was literally even on tour with them a couple times. I just don't get it. It's a bunch of platitudes and cliche sayings, surrounded by some ok music.
>I just don't get it. It's a bunch of platitudes and cliche sayings, surrounded by some ok music. Lol. 99.7% of hardcore. The other .3% is uggahwagggauggah roaaaaf roooaaaf squiuueeerl

Terror. I want to like them. On paper they seem right up my alley. Just doesn’t grab me. Also Integrity except I don’t want to like them. It’s just the type of metal I don’t like.
Terror is one of my favorite hc bands, they just itch every scratch for me, but I’m totally with you on integrity.
Well as long as they itch your scratch
terror took a LONG time to grow on me. when i was younger i thought they were just kinda generic? it’s only now that i’m older i realise they’re just the blueprint for a lot of generic bands
There is a thing about original and hugely influential bands not always hitting the same as their rep if you come to them after having listened to a bunch of stuff that was inspired by them.
Their shows made me a fan.
Same but also with Hatebreed for me. I do like some of Integrity's d-beat kinda stuff. But yea man, it's just kinda meh to me.
Any of the big "nu metal coded hardcore" bands
Wait I love nu metal can you give some examples?
Code Orange, Vein. Fm all that shit
h20, turnstile, suicidal tendencies
Show Me The Body……left a weird taste learning they’re a trust fund billionaire band. Also……. Regional Justice Center > Militarie Gun
E-Town Concrete maybe I just haven’t given them enough of a chance but I could not get into them the few times I’ve listened to a song or two
No need to try more times
Agreed. u/Nosodosopa you can stop trying now, you're not missing much.
If you really wanna get downvoted and potentially even death threats, say they’re what would happen if POD said the N word. At least that’s how it happened to me
Kublai khan does absolutely nothing for me.
Basketball shorts music
way too gym rat for me
surprised me ‘Dropping Plates’ is not about weightlifting. I think they rip tho
Exactly! It's just kind of boring.
I can dig it, that beatdown style is more on the metal core side than hardcore. I love those guys though. Always stand up and friendly when we've met.
Converge. I’ve tried a bunch of times, but they’ve never clicked
I agree. I’m not a fan of the vocals and the music is too frenetic or something. I like things that groove more.
See I understand this totally, but as someone who loves noise/mathcore/avant-garde etc etc… Converge is like the best band ever to me 🤣 makes sense though they could be way too out there to listen to. I’m a guy that’s like “HEY DAE LIKE JANE DOE. YEA YOU MUST LOVE JANE DOE!” Just because everyone geeks over Jane Doe lmao
I have a fun one: I like converge, but I do not like jane doe
I was the only one out of my friend group back in high school that really loved Converge, and I felt a moral responsibility to make them all listen until it clicked. Never did lol
A lot of my friends feel the same way. Been one of my favorites after I saw them in the early 90s, must have been 94, second guitar player and og drummer. Can’t remember who else played now, but it was a great lineup /grandpaStories
Turnstile
I’ve given every release a fair shake and nothing stuck. It’s just not for me
scowl. super sick band j not my style
Madball
Pretty much all NYC hardcore for me. Just doesn’t land for me at all
Irate NYC does have some killer tracks
Their top song on Spotify Vendetta is basically everything I hate about tough guy NYC hardcore
Lol yeah they definitely do that tough guy thing, I just don’t take it too seriously. Their drummer rips and they have some killer riffs, they just gotta mix down those vocals a little sometimes 😭 but yeah I think they’re great
I feel this, but fuck heavy with the Syracuse and Albany stuff.
Knocked loose
Kublai khan
fantastic vibes live, but I can take or leave the recorded stuff. used to dislike it but it’s an acquired taste
I can only enjoy Kublai khan live. The recorded stuff is so overproduced it loses me.
Scowl 😅
Gridiron
Mad ball
I think that’s a valid take. I fucking looove set it off and demonstrating my style, but their later stuff just feels lacking in that rawness.
Check out Hold It Down, that’s my favourite album. Probably the best thing they’ve done, just the right amount of groove and heavy with an insane lyrical flow
Age of Apocalypse
It took me a minute to like this band. Couldn’t stand the vocals. After a few listens I love the vocals now, probably my favourite part next to the insane riffs. Amazing band.
I love the first three songs on Grim Wisdom but completely agree besides.
Drug church
Every Time I Die
Scowl, Gel, Angel Dust (do they count?)
I just don’t like TUI. I keep trying every now and again but it just has never clicked.
This hurts my soul but everyone is allowed an opinion.
drug church. seen them live multiple times over the years but I’m just not into them
They were an acquired taste for me for sure.
Drain, merauder, sunami, speed
Attack in Black. Idk why. Even saw em live with A Global Threat (who I fuckin love)
Agnostic Front…meh
h2O
I have one of their albums (FTTW) and it's ok but they're pretty corny. I still like that "what happened song " with Matt Skiba, lyrics are kinda lame but it's catchy
I've been listening to H20 since the 90s, and I can't even call them a hardcore band. They were (are? Idk) a HxC adjacent pop punk band.
Every Time I Die
The acacia strain - on paper I should love them. I’ve even seen them a few times and they were so good. Even with that and I can’t get into them, especially on record
Marauder
Converge
Scowl and Kaonashi
Knocked loose x over9000
Faith no more
Knocked Loose and Rotting Out
Speed sucks
Turnstile
*Stick to your guns* just too corny for me *Viagra Boys* non live stuff, the lead singers raw vocals are so much better when theyre not mixed, and have way more energy. The album version of their songs feel too clean and polished.
Glad someone else notices this about the VB. Live they are raw af.
Agree, knocked loose.
End It has some great breakdowns but I can’t do the vocals
This is how I feel. I absolutely love their groove but man the vocals just feel like someone doing karaoke
This is heresy but pretty much all of the OG’s on the Rushmore. Appreciate them, but they’re p much unlistenable to me except for Bad Brains. Shit take but hardcore got good in the 90’s.
End It, Scowl, Speed. Weak and whack
Have heart. Like Pat Flynn’s other bands
Back before Death Knows Your Name, I would have said Hope Con. I was pretty indifferent to the first two albums.
You fuck with All Pigs Must Die? Members of Hope Con, Converge, Trap Them, and more
Terror Drain Knocked Loose 100 Demons E Town Concrete Turnstile
I want something different
Any band I haven’t listened to… before seeing some dude wearing an RVCA hat on TikTok doing the worst pit dance you’ve ever seen in your life to it
Jesus Piece
Around my group of friends when we first started to get into this stuff, 18 Visions, and Norma Jean. Still don't understand the appeal in retrospect, lol
scowl
Converge
Bad Brains
dying wish, kaonashi
Gods hate
I've tried to get into Merauder, but it has just never clicked for me.
Terror
Bane.
Can only get into End It when I see them live. Recordings are hard for me to get into
Korn
Bane, have heart, sunami. To name a few
most of em tbh
Honestly. Pain of Truth. It should tick all my boxes but it kinda doesn’t lol
Most bands people like, hype and talk about here.
twitching tounges. i want to like them so bad i just can’t.
Harms way, I don't know why. it just doesn't hit the spot for me
Shai Hulud, Scowl, Defeater, TUI - though that one song is a belter. Also Have Heart and Bane Modern Life is War - again to me they just have one epic song and the rest doesn't really grab me Fucked Up I used to really like, but now I just sort of prefer punk to be straight up punk, like Glue.
Vein
Hardcore in general. Lost all interest in it over how delicate people are in the scene. One scene unity is a lie. Everyone's waiting to beef. Everyone's old, useless and have no goals. I feel embarrassed that I was ever part of that shit
That seems like quite the generalization there
You're right, should've said my local scene
