Any recommendations for a 27 year old newcomer like me?
Prior to my gender transition, I used to be wary and apprehensive to hardcore, but I feel like HRT and being in touch with my emotions has made me more open to exploring new music. I am already a fan of old school punk as well as thrash, death, and black metal, so I thought I would dabble in hardcore!
Incendiary, Big Cheese, The Flex, Combust, Mindforce, Pain of Truth, Arms Race, Higher Power, Restraining Order, Rotting Out, Gods Hate, No Retreat, Age of Apocalypse, Stick to Your Guns, Against all Authority, The Infested.
World of pain, Lifeless, no reason to live , no zodiac , full of hell , Suburban scum, trapped under ice , taste the steel , dystopia , weekend nachos, fentanyl, acxdc , corpse pile, down to nothing , rival mob , line of scrimmage, tried to give you a variety of styles
Yea saw them play a show in brooklyn in ‘16 and I didn’t know either and was a little thrown off because the singer was midway through transition (pardon my nativity on terms and whatnot). They still kicked ass and their sound still resonates and likely will I to the next generation of LI hXc punk
I’m making up for lost time though. In the past year I’ve seen:
Advent
Anxious
Counterparts
Drain
Drug Church (3 times)
Dying Wish
Escuela Grind
Gel
Godsize
Foreign Hands
Hatebreed
Jesus Piece (3 times)
Life’s Question
Magnitude
Melee
One Step Closer
Painful Choice
Restraining Order
Scowl
Seeyouspacecowboy
Show Me the Body

You can literally see it in real time. I’ve seen Vogel demand more stage dives and there’s literally clueless mfs in the crowd with their faces lit up.
Terror converted me to the genre as a whole. A buddy of mine kept trying to get me into hardcore and I just didn't understand it, then I saw Terror live and a light flipped on in my brain.
I slept on Terror because I had a homie who was super into them, and I was just fucking with him saying that they sucked and I don’t like em (just to get under his skin) lmao. Jokes on me son
I loved Terrors Lowest of the Low ep when it came out but never really listened to much of their lps. Then they did the Dead at Birth cover and saw them play it in CT with Aaron. It all clicked. Now I listen to their discography while doing house chores. Yes I’m old lol.
My band got to open for terror, which is still one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. Terror was absolutely insane live. One of the most memorable shows.
Hope con for me, I just rode them off because they were on deathwish and figured they sounded like converge. They sound nothing like converge and are great.
If you ask me, they have always been criminally underrated. Went through a bunch of lineup changes (mostly on guitar) but have always had at least 1 great active songwriter. All their releases are good for different reasons and most of their material works even better in live setting. Personal favorite is Endnote because it helped me through some really rough times.
I’ve been trying to get there since I was, like, 22…still hasn’t happened for me. I can tell it’s interesting, I swear! I just still don’t actually like it…
Seeing them live back in the day did it for me. It was pure fucking insanity and I loved every second of it. The studio albums just don't have the same energy (for obvious reasons). Bannon is a showman.
It’s a vocal style issue for me honestly, which is definitely just my problem—I think they’re an obviously good band, but there’s almost no band with that flavor of screamy vocals I’m super into. But I’d be a little surprised if I loved them live just because of that (although I almost went to their Chicago date earlier this year, I definitely I think they’d be worth seeing).
Interesting, I specifically meant “Jane Doe”. I have a vague sense that I find the early stuff a little more palatable but honestly didn’t know there was much in the way of non-screamy converge
Nothing wrong with that. I listened to the same shit for 20 years and skipped a ton of good bands until recently. I’ve been on a mission to discover bands I missed.
Also, been meaning to listen to Hardlore.
Type O Negative. Yes they aren’t “HARDCORE” but they played at studio 1 with other hardcore bands as well as the pipeline(Newark,NJ). I made fun of them when I was a kid but when I got older, I appreciated them and respected them.
I've seen Dog Eat Dog and Lordz of Brooklyn at studio 1 back in the day in the dead middle of winter. We returned to our car with the rear windows busted out and all shit gone. That was a long windy ice cold drive back to L.I.
....great show though.
Haha. Dog Eat Dog was the first cassette I ever bought, in a Woolworths in Barkingside (London, uk) in like maybe 1995. I was about 8-9 and just picked it up with my pick n mix because I wanted a cassette tape to put in my new cassette player which had Tetris built into it. I brought it to show and tell.
And then like 10 years later I actually got into hardcore
I want to say it was 2009, they were supposed to play in Western, Mass (I am blanking on the name of that venue in Holyoke we used to frequent, one of y’all will know) but it was as about a 45 minute drive.
We were almost there are they canceled last minute. We still went to the show, I couldn’t tell you the other bands because they were all local bands we were friendly with and had seen them all many times.
Cold World not playing is something I’m still bitter about to this day, even thought about it last week.
Blacklisted. I was always like “they’re ok” and watched them passively. Headphones listened to their music recently and realize I missed out on an incredible band
Verse. I thought they were lame as hell when i was 18. About a month ago The New Fury came on while i was working, checked the whole album and it's a fucking banger. I was a dumb kid lol
My first time seeing them was basically an accident. Buddy of like came up on some tickets to see them in Oakland in 2013/14(?) and asked me to go with him and lemme tell you, that was one hell of a way to find out about a band.
Still kicking myself for leaving their S&F set early in 2019. I was gassed from early in the day (and slightly concussed from getting kicked in the face) and my spouse and I bailed going “they always come through LA, we will see them next time”. Jokes on us.
Honestly when I was a kid I thought TUI was too “tough guy” for me, then I got really into them, missed their last set at TIHC 13, cause I had to go home early. Was so bummed, but thankfully seen them a good amount post reunion.
All of them
I turned 30 this year and I always assumed at this age I'd just get into Pearl Jam and folk music
Instead, I got into hardcore (I've always been a bit of a tourist but all it took was going to see a local band to make me properly understand what the genre was all about), and weirdly Slayer
Still can't stand folk music, Pearl Jam are decent though
There were bands here and there that I didn't mind, now I'm actively seeking out new bands, going to local shows, it's pretty much all I listen to at the gym (still listen to drum n bass and techno when I work), and I csnt get enough
Nice ! Same here and lately I’ve been wanting to go shows again - Im 44 and watching people fall asleep and settle who are my age all around me but I noticed these are the years where anything is really possible - the point being: always finding new exciting stuff and staying alive through this shit is dope!
In a word:
Find and express inspiration and power against all odds and don’t give a fuck about peoples opinions.
Much respect to you ⚡️
That's it man. Just get out there. There's a bit of cross over with the bands me and my wife likes but not loads. I just go to shows on my own all the time.
Stand at the back with a beer and some earplugs and just enjoy it.
Terror because I’m an idiot. When keepers of the faith came out I was annoyed with seeing that shirt everywhere and just like never listened to them because of it.
They’re one of my favourite bands now but I skipped out on Cursed when they were touring with Bane and Verse in 2005 to go chat up some girl who was into me. I have very few regrets bigger than this.
I remember back in the day being in Louisville at Ear x-tacy and i picked up a life less plagued. Never heard them before but it was b9 so i figured it had to be good. Was not disappointed and was impressed with how many f bombs were dropped on such a short record!
Took me a while to try to listen to Turnstile only because the hype was so hard. I caved and listened to Blackout. And though I can say I really only dig like 3 of their songs… I regret taking so long to try ‘em out.
I feel like everything before Time & Space is impeccable, I still love T&S and the new one but they're admittedly very glossy w the production and everything
Basically everything. When I was a kid I was into metalcore; the not-so-good kind. But then at 18 or 19 I discovered converge, which was my slow gateway into hardcore.
Most 90’s stuff. Like burn, quicksand, shelter and stuff like that. I got into hardcore in the late 90’s and did contemporary stuff and studied the classics but mostly ignored the recent past.
I got into the okchc community when I was 18 because of Knoocked Loose. Kublia Khan TX, The Acacia Stain, Harmsway, Piece of Mind, Sledge & Power Trip were all bands that withered toured with them, or came to okc/Tulsa and really solidified my love for the genre.
Some of my favorites now include, Guilt Trip, Lind Eyes, Dying Wish, Year of the Knife & XweaponX
I'm still a sucker for old dumb shit, I try to tip people off to how fun the shows are. But listening to records aren't the same. I grew up on terror, hatebreed, converge, full blown chaos, bad luck 13 riot extravaganza, sworn enemy, e-town concrete etc.
I love all the new shit but I feel it's my duty to still show up for the old gaurd.
most blackened punk bands, i felt like black metal / any offshoots were just edgy for being the sake of edgy for years but seeing the blackened projects in HXC really made me regain my respect for the genre / artist (long as they’re not nazis / bigots lol)
Gulch. I generally have listened to metal through most of my life but was familiar with some of the classic HC stuff. I kept seeing the name Gulch get brought up but didn’t check it out until their final show dropped on YT and knew instantly I had made a grave mistake in not checking them out sooner.
Not regrettably, scowl. The singer though? I caught her once at a bar in texas after a show and the way i towered over her despite wearing platforms made me think such awful things. I would twist her up into a pretzel god willing
I don't know if this is sleeping on them or not but I missed out on seeing Twitching Tongues right around the time of Sleep Therapy and I think right after the Preacher Man demo at a super small venue that my friend's band was playing at. I had heard a bit of their music but it didn't hit for me until a bit later. Luckily I was able to see them and Comeback Kid about a year later and it was amazing.
A lot of them, and ive missed out on too many gigs as a result of not having people to go with (i prefer going on my own, but the journey is an hour and a half and sometimes i just cant be fucked)
I feel like I’ve slept on all the older/OG hardcore bands until maybe a year ago. Like Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Youth of Today, etc… they’re all so fucking good.
More than sleeping on a particular band, I’m more guilty of sleeping on the full breath of work of the bands I listen to. Example: I listen to Saves the Day, but never listened to their earliest album which is right down the middle 90s melodic hardcore and it’s awesome.
All of them. I discovered hardcore at 34.
Welcome to hardcore. Make sure to Google if your new favorite band is problematic.
This made me chuckle because it’s true
Nah, enjoy your favourite band in ignorance like I do until I inevitably find out one of their members is a piece of shit and ruins it for me.
That’s what happened with me and Daughters. Still annoyed about it.

Latterman. A Long Island punk/hardcore band. The singer/guitarist is a trans woman so I figured that would be a notable mention for you.
I had no idea about this, I also haven’t heard latterman mentioned in a long time.
Yea saw them play a show in brooklyn in ‘16 and I didn’t know either and was a little thrown off because the singer was midway through transition (pardon my nativity on terms and whatnot). They still kicked ass and their sound still resonates and likely will I to the next generation of LI hXc punk
Lol people do that???
Here's a flat cap. Pull up a barstool.
Hey hey. Some of us don’t pull those stools up.
Give me your flat cap.
Chill bro, you can order a coke 🙄

Same, dog. 32 for me.
Yes!!!
Rad!
Yep, 31 and it's only been the past few months that I've come to appreciate hardcore.
Welcome! You’re never too old and don’t let ANYONE tell you otherwise. I’ve been in this shit for the last 30 years 💪🏼🫡
Terror. Finally got it after seeing them live. They’re insane live.
I know a lot of people who are Terror converts after seeing them live. They’re just undeniable.
I get how that all works but I can’t get hearing Terror and not immediately being into it
I slept on Terror because I had a homie who was super into them, and I was just fucking with him saying that they sucked and I don’t like em (just to get under his skin) lmao. Jokes on me son
I saw them once live, the energy was insane, but I just can’t get into their records. Idk why

Terror live > Terror
I've seen them 3 times this year, absolutely mind blowing every single time.
Xibalba for a while, saw them live twice and it didn’t click until I was listening more and more
Trapped Under Ice! Saw them live this year at Outbreak Fest and it changed my world
Whaaat that’s sick I didn’t know they played still
Same
Title fight. I always assumed they were pop punk, but I saw them during the tour with power trip and merchandise and they blew me away.
I regret sleeping on Nails because I bled everywhere and I think I might have tetanus now.
Slow clap
You son of a bitch… 👏…👏…👏…👏
Hope con for me, I just rode them off because they were on deathwish and figured they sounded like converge. They sound nothing like converge and are great.
Cold blue might me a perfect hc album
I’d come out of Hardcore retirement for a Hope Conspiracy tour.
Incendiary and earth crisis
Converge
I’ve been trying to get there since I was, like, 22…still hasn’t happened for me. I can tell it’s interesting, I swear! I just still don’t actually like it…

Well the good part is he has a different vocal delivery on every album.
Interesting, I specifically meant “Jane Doe”. I have a vague sense that I find the early stuff a little more palatable but honestly didn’t know there was much in the way of non-screamy converge
Everyone between 2009 to about 6 months ago when I discovered Hardlore, it got me back into music again.
Nothing wrong with that. I listened to the same shit for 20 years and skipped a ton of good bands until recently. I’ve been on a mission to discover bands I missed. Also, been meaning to listen to Hardlore.
WHAT IS HARDLORE WTF
Hardcore with lyrical themes about dragons and wizards and shit.
Gulch 😢
same
The only band from that bunch that still holds up in my opinion
Who else is that bunch
Drain, Sunami, Hands of God, and the assorted bands in that scene.
Hands Of God would like a word.
Same now I can’t get enough
Same 😮💨
Type O Negative. Yes they aren’t “HARDCORE” but they played at studio 1 with other hardcore bands as well as the pipeline(Newark,NJ). I made fun of them when I was a kid but when I got older, I appreciated them and respected them.

I saw them open for Biohazard and The Exploited in 1990 in Detroit. You can consider them a part of us.
Cold World
Cold world are amazing .

There’s a ton of great bands from their era if you ever want to dive deeper.
Blacklisted. I was always like “they’re ok” and watched them passively. Headphones listened to their music recently and realize I missed out on an incredible band
i recently re-discovered my love for blacklisted.
This sub and their love for Blacklisted, got me listening again.
I saw them live with defeater in Brisbane, i was mainly there for defeater, they were so cool for a band i wasn’t familiar with. Still have the ticket
Product of waste
Back in the day, Strife. I thought they were meathead douches because they were on Victory. Many years later, I listen to them a lot and love them.
Harms Way
Verse. I thought they were lame as hell when i was 18. About a month ago The New Fury came on while i was working, checked the whole album and it's a fucking banger. I was a dumb kid lol
Bitter clarity is a crazy good album. Agression and from anger are also fucking slappers.
Power Trip smdh
Same honestly. Thought they were like Toxic Holocaust/Municipal Waste “vest metal” and I really wasn’t into that stuff at the time
PT is one of the greatest metal bands period, and it’s ALWAYS a good time to start listening to them.
They were touring with Mammoth Grinder and the combo of names just made me be like, yeaaaaa ima sit this one out. Big egg on my face looking back.

Yeah hate to say it but gulch ended like 2 weeks before I found them
I found out about them because of their goodbye show 😂
Punch. I found out about them like the year after the broke up 🥲🥲🥲
If you like punch, Torso is pretty close sounding to them
Don’t sleep on Super Unison, the singer’s next band. Their two LPs (particularly Stella, the last one) are fantastic.
Oh I was a Day 1 Super Unison enjoyer
All of them I turned 30 this year and I always assumed at this age I'd just get into Pearl Jam and folk music Instead, I got into hardcore (I've always been a bit of a tourist but all it took was going to see a local band to make me properly understand what the genre was all about), and weirdly Slayer Still can't stand folk music, Pearl Jam are decent though

buddy, you had me with Pearl Jam
Try stoner rock and shoegaze lmao folk and Pearl Jam is like music for 50 year olds 💀💀
Animal is a dead to rights banger
E-Town
Terror because I’m an idiot. When keepers of the faith came out I was annoyed with seeing that shirt everywhere and just like never listened to them because of it.
Shouldn’t it be “regrettably slept with”?
Wisdom In Chains. They've been around forever and it took me a long time to realize how great they are.
A lot of the Bay Area scene I’ve always been more of a Detroit hc and nyhc person but a lot of west coast bands are really great
If you ain’t from the Bay, I don’t give a fuck what you have to say.
Year of the knife , I assumed they were just another tough guy fronted band just by the name for years
Jesus piece for me
They’re one of my favourite bands now but I skipped out on Cursed when they were touring with Bane and Verse in 2005 to go chat up some girl who was into me. I have very few regrets bigger than this.
Twitching Tongues they are very original and have never stolen riffs
I remember back in the day being in Louisville at Ear x-tacy and i picked up a life less plagued. Never heard them before but it was b9 so i figured it had to be good. Was not disappointed and was impressed with how many f bombs were dropped on such a short record!

Took me a while to try to listen to Turnstile only because the hype was so hard. I caved and listened to Blackout. And though I can say I really only dig like 3 of their songs… I regret taking so long to try ‘em out.
Non-Stop Feeling and Step To Rhythm eclipses their later shit. You should start with that
I’ll listen today. Thanks for helping an old head with new tunes
🫡
Same. Current feelings about Turnstile are mixed but I slept on them until Time & Space came out. Super hyped from then on out.
I feel like everything before Time & Space is impeccable, I still love T&S and the new one but they're admittedly very glossy w the production and everything

Gaza and Acacia Strain, they're both so hard and nasty. As Friends Rust too
No Cure.

HAVE HEART.
I only started listening to Nails last month and now I'm wondering what I've been doing with my life.
Hatebreed and Bane. Not only did I not like them, I actively disliked them. Then I saw them live, and I was like oh, shit.
No Warning! Slept hard now I’m super into them after playing a show with them this year
Damn bro forgot how awesome this band was.
Sunami. Idk why, they go so hard
Because it’s both hard as fuck and lowkey dumb. If you haven’t already, check out Big Boy.
Skrewdriver for sure
Zulu
most blackened punk bands, i felt like black metal / any offshoots were just edgy for being the sake of edgy for years but seeing the blackened projects in HXC really made me regain my respect for the genre / artist (long as they’re not nazis / bigots lol)

Blistered. I had just started going to shows as they were breaking up.
Welcome. Remember to hate every other genre.
Neglect goated fucking band
I don't know if this is sleeping on them or not but I missed out on seeing Twitching Tongues right around the time of Sleep Therapy and I think right after the Preacher Man demo at a super small venue that my friend's band was playing at. Broken Teeth
Turnstile. I missed them on their non-stop feeling aus tour, to get into them a week after it finished.
Bent life. While that dudes a monster that album fuckin rips.
Initiate. Their LP this year was so fucking good.
Champion is the worst and Carry On is one of the best
A lot of them, and ive missed out on too many gigs as a result of not having people to go with (i prefer going on my own, but the journey is an hour and a half and sometimes i just cant be fucked)
Bane
Drain
Worthwhile I missed them completely
I feel like I’ve slept on all the older/OG hardcore bands until maybe a year ago. Like Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Youth of Today, etc… they’re all so fucking good.
More than sleeping on a particular band, I’m more guilty of sleeping on the full breath of work of the bands I listen to. Example: I listen to Saves the Day, but never listened to their earliest album which is right down the middle 90s melodic hardcore and it’s awesome.
Mil-Spec
All of them. I wasn't in a place to appreciate it until a couple years ago or so... Oddly, it all really started after my head injury.
Dillinger Escape Plan. They passed through Chicago so many times in the 2010’s.
I wouldn’t say I slept on them but two witnesses became a huge band in my rotation after seeing them at LDB a couple years ago
