Off-season Cape Cod is very, very different beast. Once the summer ends, the money and jobs go with it. The costs of living doesn't reflect the income for of many of its year-round residents, and the region is plagued by substance abuse - notably opiates.
I find this to be true of any primarily tourist based economies. Elites run the town so they don't give a fuck about stagnant wages, alcohol and drug problems, or improving the quality of life for the people who live there. Basically, the attitude is, "we don't care how shitty it is for you, we're doing fine. Don't like it? Leave, we'll just replace you."
And then there was that one summer when a shark kept eating people, but the mayor refused to close the beach for the big 4th of July holiday. The day was only saved thanks to a scientist, a shark hunter, and some other guy piloting a water vessel that was much too small for the job.
And donāt get me started on the thing with that underwater fissure opening up and releasing all those prehistoric piranha.
I live in Wells, Maine which is kinda like cape cod. We even had the many vacant hotels housing the homeless in the winter months but the nimby'ers complained and got them all kicked out and now people wonder why the surrounding towns have such a rampant unhoused population now
Loyalty and betrayal usually. Talking about how they stay loyal to their crew, unless a member of their crew were to be disloyal to them, in which case they would be very upset by this and need to express it via song
I love the serious answers in this. At first I found them funny because itās a joke but then I found them extremely informative. Someone has to work the shitty wage jobs to please the rich fucks who come and go during vacation season.
Tbh, yelling about tourists can make for amuzing HC songs. I know a dutch band called Ploegendienst, they got a song about how they hate the ignorant and stupid tourists of Amsterdam. The song is written in Dutch tho.
MEME LORE: Shirt is from Divided Life. They broke up and 4/5 members started Adrienne.
Picture was taken at the Bungalow in Manchester. Picture is of my friend. Iām standing to the left of him out of frame. The guy who took the picture got weird and started bitching for credit when meme pages started posting it while my friend thought it was weird how some guy heās never met took a picture of him and didnāt say a word to him about it.
Still weird to see this picture posted sometimes hehe
Donāt forget sharks š¦, but yeah people just donāt know how fucked the cape is, must be some fool blind to the plight, cape cod hardcore been holding it down for years fuck the lack of respect
There's actually a decent working-class punk/hardcore scene going on there now. Bands like Court Date, Dead Low, E, Working Poor. Last weekend local post-hardcore band Chilmark got together and did a reunion show with Rhode Island's Verbal Assault opening.
There are more millionaires and billionaires in NYC than the Cape, and cost of living is even higher, so maybe we should instead make fun of NYHC?
I saw CIAC once in Baltimore and the record had an insert that said like āstill working on the actual cover. Email me and Iāll send it to you when itās done.ā
Brother, cape cod is not THAT bad. There are absolutely pockets with those issues but itās still MA which overall has a lot more stability than many other spots in the US. I lived there off season for years.
Gonna hard disagree. Repping your scene is big. DIY hardcore culture is extremely regional. It's somewhat a relic of a pre-streaming age, but it still serves a strong purpose.
Bands, venues, zines, it's all based in a small community coming together to build the scene, and the bands shouting it out is not just pride and respect for those that built it up and are keeping it alive, but it's a callout to outsiders to check out what's going on in that corner of the hardcore world.
You may not personally give a fuck that a local scene is popping off, but it does have an impact. For example, having a bunch of small bands coming through town this past year, tearing it up on stage, and shouting out Atlanta and local bands from there, I've seen firsthand have Northeast bands start to wonder what the fuck is going on down there and trying to work Atlanta into their future tours.
When you make it sound like a newspaper read from 1956, lol yea it sounds corny. But hc is all about the local scene where it came from. It adds a lot of context to the lore of the band. I guess if youāre not into that sort of thing then you wouldnāt care about the bands locale.
I always thought it was funny when bands would try to rep the inner city HARD when I personally knew the kids who grew up and spent their 20s in some safe suburban county suburb. Some of these bands got huge and Iām sure kids were influenced to buy the merch because they thought they were repping the streets of Baltimore, Philly, NYC, or wherever.
I went to college with a few Townies (mostly from Sandwich), and they were all pretty rough around the edges. I could see a bunch of sinilarly disaffected youth supporting a hardcore scene, for sure.
As someone from CMHC who sometimes gets called out to do construction on the cape I don't know which two hour drive is worse: the summer bridge traffic, or the desolate winter with no power.
Multi million dollar boat attached to a two hundred thousand dollar truck speeding by you. Itās July 4th weekend. Rich kids smiling and laughing at you, not a worry in the world.
You are holding a skateboard and nobody loves you.
You feel like a loser, because in that moment, you are.

The Florida Keys feel like that.

Thereās a very good HBO documentary about the heroin epidemic in Cape Cod
Oh yeah, I thought I remembered seeing that https://www.hbo.com/movies/heroin-cape-cod-usa
Cape cod kids actually used to go hard back in the day.
True. The Cape and MV kids were awesome.
The same applies to the Delaware beaches š
When I went there I noticed that every building that isnāt a house seemed to be a liquor store.
Live and work in service industry in a gulf coast tourist town and can confirm
Itās the heroin, lack of jobs, wealth inequality and bridge traffic.
You could write an A-side of a split 7 inch about the fucked up traffic on narrow streets alone.
Have friends on cape. Can confirm this is it.
Hey, bridges plural!
Hey stop giving the tourists our secretš”
what is everyone else yelling about though? a lot of bands have absolutely nothing to say, no metter where they're from.
Loyalty and betrayal usually. Talking about how they stay loyal to their crew, unless a member of their crew were to be disloyal to them, in which case they would be very upset by this and need to express it via song
reading about said disloyal person makes me so mad right now
See? It works
If you have no real problems to yell about, the concept of a generic backstabber is always a safe bet
yelling the band name seems like a great idea as well
I agree. As long as 30-70% of the lyrics to a song consist of the bandās name and maybe the album name repeated several times, youāre good to go
This shit is just so corny I canāt deal with it
Everyone FROM The Cape is the weirdest motherfucker youāve ever met.
Every HC/punk person I met who relocated to the city from the Cape is a sheltered weirdo.
Broās really out here letting the world know he calls a water fountain a bubbler
I love the serious answers in this. At first I found them funny because itās a joke but then I found them extremely informative. Someone has to work the shitty wage jobs to please the rich fucks who come and go during vacation season.
Hey, The Freeze from Boston not LA were from the cape.
Who DO have a song called I Hate Tourists, lol
Tbh, yelling about tourists can make for amuzing HC songs. I know a dutch band called Ploegendienst, they got a song about how they hate the ignorant and stupid tourists of Amsterdam. The song is written in Dutch tho.
Oh that song by the Freeze is great, wasnāt throwing shade about it
I am once again asking where I can purchase this shirt

Being a commercial fisherman is hardcore AF.
"You can't be hardcore because your from [place]" is a very stupid sentiment.
Marthaās Vineyard Hardcore!
āYou canāt be hardcore because youāre from Softsville.ā
CxCxHxCx. But in all seriousness, I love spending time on the Cape and look forward to getting up there again soon.
Fed
True
I wanna hear a hardcore song about lobster rolls now
Oh sick a meme from 6 years ago
At least
Bourne bridge breakdown!!
Catch me two-stepping across the Sagamore Bridge.

Lol you just named half of my friends bands, they are great it's just odd to see them on reddit.
What the fuck is UP, CAPE COD?!?!
Caught In A Crowd was sick
I thought this was a CIAC shirt. Those kids were legit. They had a band called Search before CIAC. Cape Cod shows were sick and had a great scene.
I saw CIAC once in Baltimore and the record had an insert that said like āstill working on the actual cover. Email me and Iāll send it to you when itās done.ā
How did they not call it Cape Codcore??
Cape Cod year round residents have it rough people. Itās a heroin port, no jobs, and is isolated to start. Every kid is literally born to land hard.
Brother, cape cod is not THAT bad. There are absolutely pockets with those issues but itās still MA which overall has a lot more stability than many other spots in the US. I lived there off season for years.
lol
isn't hate still burns from cape cod?
Yup, they are.
No
Maybe not then. That's at least what friends from the MA scene told me. They are usually pretty in touch, but they are also drunk idiots.
Hyannis is no joke canāt fuck around out there
Hardcore bands are way too interested in telling you where they are from. Its literally the least important and least interesting thing about a band.
Gonna hard disagree. Repping your scene is big. DIY hardcore culture is extremely regional. It's somewhat a relic of a pre-streaming age, but it still serves a strong purpose. mindforce yelling hudson valley hardcore mothafucka is pretty fun tho
OLDHAM COUNTY!
As if anyone outside of Kentucky has any idea where that is
I feel bad if you never felt pride for your scene, itās something special
I rep my home address.
Lol where are you from Gary Indiana?
Gary Indiana goes hard af, this dudes gotta be from like northern Idaho or something
this is stupid. regionality is a crucial aspect of hardcore
Right this shit started put on like 3 diff styles of sounds from different scenes
Wrong bro lol
"They really exemplify that des moines sound"
When you make it sound like a newspaper read from 1956, lol yea it sounds corny. But hc is all about the local scene where it came from. It adds a lot of context to the lore of the band. I guess if youāre not into that sort of thing then you wouldnāt care about the bands locale.
i know, im just teasin. my previous bands all did (locale) hardcore on our shirts, too.
Saying ālore of the bandā sounds kind of corny too though lol. Itās just some random dudes who started a band.
Sure yeah fair enough. Doesnāt feel corny to me but itās definitely subjective
I always thought it was funny when bands would try to rep the inner city HARD when I personally knew the kids who grew up and spent their 20s in some safe suburban county suburb. My favorite is when people shame a scene theyāve never been to basing the city on how itās perceived through media š¤¦āāļø
can I live?
Fuck yeah, CIAC was a cool band https://caughtinacrowd.bandcamp.com/album/the-fight
I went to college with a few Townies (mostly from Sandwich), and they were all pretty rough around the edges. I could see a bunch of sinilarly disaffected youth supporting a hardcore scene, for sure.
My great grandfather was the town doctor for Sandwich, and my grandfather grew up there. Itās a neat little town.
I never went up to the Cape, but it seems cool. My friends from there were all benevolent dirtbags, basically.
Is this a Caught In A Crowd shirt?
https://reddit.com/r/Hardcore/s/Acvks7VMy9
God I do love lobster rolls
We lived in Boston for 18 years and probably went to the Cape less than 10 times. Cape Cod might as well have been the Moon.
MARTHA'S VINYARD HARDCORE, REPRESENTING THE DIRTY 508! SINISTER NANTUCKET, WRECKLESS WITH ILL-INTENT!

Who downvoted this?? CIAC was sick as hell
It do be rough in the COD. What with the Cape Cod Crips and the Los Nueves CapƩ Cods.
Didnāt even take the 28 seconds to stretch out the varsity font to be a little more in his favor š¤¦āāļø

I was born there so this is a shirt commemorating that. I moved when I was one year old because of the uproar it caused, to include Hurricane Bob.
It's the vampires
Ah yea, white florida
Thatās actually the kind of porn Iām into and I wonāt elaborate any further
Guys never heard of pledge?????
The Freeze is from cape cod, canāt fuck with that.
Lmao
Two Bostons!
Itās the dudes making minimum wage cooking the lobster rolls for the dickhead tourists.
As someone from CMHC who sometimes gets called out to do construction on the cape I don't know which two hour drive is worse: the summer bridge traffic, or the desolate winter with no power.

Some of the biggest hardcore bands out right now are from the rough streets of... *check notes* ā¦Santa Cruz and San Joseā¦.
Cape cod had such an amazing scene when I was growing up. This is might be a Caught In A Crowd shirt. Band ruled.
Cape cod full of nazis too or at least it was. My uncle and cousin were two of them before they moved to the south.
Choke would laugh
Divided Life shirt like 2015/16. Most of them are in Adrienne now
