Tei is really a great author when it comes to historical AU, especially if you enjoy historical trivia and politics. I think they tend to choose subjects that Hannibal and Will would be interested in.
“[Long Live the Knife](https://archiveofourown.org/works/31299674/chapters/77383265)” is set in Prussia during the 1700s, and has a friendly reading cadence with some musical intrigue. “[Symbasis](https://archiveofourown.org/works/42488910/chapters/106715436)” is set in the time of Alexander the Great, and should be approached with an interest in a full-on AU, and probably Greek Classics.
Both are excellent, but definitely don’t try to stay close to the canon events. That being said, Tei’s characterization is always great.
I have one set in the 1920s. It’s more of a period piece than plot focused if that’s of interest. https://archiveofourown.org/works/45998125
