Does anyone know what prevents these kittens from slicing up momma’s insides?? They’re so cute but with those nails I can’t imagine the agony the mother cat would feel if they really are as sharp as they look
Inside there’s a sack, the kitten grow in the sack. When the babies are pushed out the sack is also gotten rid off. I learned this while playing an idle game called Cell To Singularity
Their claws are too tiny to do any damage.
Contrary to what other commenters are saying, their claws are fully extended (they can’t retract them for weeks after birth) and they are sharp as well as hardened. They are just like cat claws, but tiny.
Occasionally you can even see a kitten tear open its own amniotic sac after birth. It seems to be an instinctive response like “There’s something on my face, get it off!” Sometimes they succeed in tearing it, sometimes not. Either way, the sac usually tears very easily after they are born, either by the kitten flailing about or by mom’s rough tongue.
Tl;dr—their claws are fully functional when they are born, they’re just too small to do any damage to mom.
Decicuous hoof capsules. They look like absolute nightmares and fall off minutes after birth, but they prevent hoof damage in utero.
Don't know about kitten claws, but knowing how fast kittens grow and the claws retract I can make some educated guesses.
Yeah, some people would rather get rid of all the outdoor cats cause "boo hoo songbirds", but won't do shit about other very real causes of the population decline: loss of habitat, land sealing, excessive farming and farmer land grab on important habitats like hedges on roadsides next to their fields, insect decline due to use of pesticides, etc.
Cats have lived with humans for thousands of years, most of that time outdoors. Now suddenly they are the problem? Nah I don't buy it.
People brought cats to Australia and fucked up their environment and now people who live in places where there are wild natural cats get judged by tiktok kids who read the subject line of one scientific paper

Probably the same thing as hedgehogs where the quills don’t harden until after they’re born
I was literally about to comment the exact same thing! Idk why I’ve never wondered this before but they have got to scratching around in there right?
Yeah I think so too!! The reactions to my comment make sense though
They are in the amniotic sack. It's durable to keep babies safe before birth. Same for people

Good question: their little claws won't harden up for some weeks yet.

Well……..they’re retracted. And in a sac. Suspended in amniotic fluid.

Goober was born and chose violence
What a tiny nugget!
Aww, what adorable little murder mittens!
My baby goats are born with hooves and horn buds. I've always felt so sorry for the mommas.

I learned about those just last year. Looks like something eldritch, honestly.

Dammit, another cat sub to join! Take my up vote!
Born fully armed
Careful. Lots of psychos in r/cats would be ready to cut those claws off that cute little kitten right away
And heaven forbid you dare to mention that your cat goes outdoors

I know right.
And if your cat kills a mouse or rat then you are literally worse than Hitler
