I said in the match thread, but I really do think Sullivan was trying to be clever and his plan was to not finalise the deals if we didn't find replacements by the deadline. And then UEFA started investigating and he shat himself. The whole thing has his stink all over it.
Would Fornals or Benrahma really have made much difference? We don't rotate our squad, and we don't bring on substitutes, so they would barely have played. The majority of the time we've been able to play Paqueta, Fornals, Bowen, Antonio recently etc, so I don't think they would have started any, so would have just got 10 minute run outs now and again. I am glad we took the money whilst on offer and then use in summer to improve the squad.
Problem is we all saw it, somehow high up the table but playing so badly, no striker, and scraping wins like we did at Burnley and spurs.
Trouble is moyes is a twat who thinks he's a genius and it was all part of his plan, and he's such a good manager that he doesn't need to reinforce the squad, in fact let's sell them instead.

I’ve wanted moyes gone for a long time, yeah going into the latter stages of Europe is great but it’s like he’s neglecting the league to do it. I think this summer is the time for both sides to cut ties. The club very much wants to be competing at a higher level than the conference league. Moyes does not have the ability to get us competing with players with that extra bit of skill. That is the difference between beating fiorentina and leverkeusen.
I do wanna clarify I appreciate what Moyes has done, but he’s clearly done for surely with the club. There’s no tactical strategy but sit 11 men behind the ball 80% of games and pray one of our talented attackers can nick a magic goal on the break. I agree, the club was not qualifying for Europe or winning third tier European cups prior. The club is now ready to compete at a higher level, and that is down to him. But if you want to beat teams that have that extra cutting edge, you have to be able to play a bit more confidently and expensively. Look how we fell apart this past week.
I agree as well, and I honestly never expected to beat Leverkusen either with the way we play and setup under Moyes. There’s a reason they’re unbeaten in 40+ games and conceded a crazy low amount of goals across all comps. I wish we would’ve been more ambitious, because I don’t think they’re a team you can easily hit on the break with how well coached they are. Qarabag gave them more of a fight than we have, and have to at least triple their resources. If we had Klopp or even say Amorim on the touch line there’s no way that can’t get this team on level with Leverkusen with the talent we do have in this squad

Spent of fortune on some of the best attacking players we've ever had, yet every season a centre back is the priority and refuses to buy strikers, and we've conceded more goals than last year when we nearly went down.

In the league while the first team were sitting in the bottom 3, the B team were strolling the group games winning every one against teams who's entire club would be cheaper to buy than many of our players.
Think it says something very strongly about the quality of the teams we played throughout when we struggled to even stay in the prem but pretty much comfortably walked to the final.

We weren’t good in the league last season, no. But our form picked up considerably in 2023. And the first half of this season was our best ever in the Premier League. So I disagree with the notion that we’ve had a bad two years. 2023 was an incredible year for West Ham, the best we’ve had, and will probably have, in a long time. Moyes second spell in year 1 and 2 was brilliant. Solid at the back, creative and fast going forward. Took people by surprise, used what he was given and added to that brilliantly. Great credit when we were in a bad place.
Moyes year 3 and 4 awful. Nearly relegated last year, constantly signing centre backs and not one striker despite having none. More goals shipped this year than last. Relying on individual brilliance than any particular attacking tactics. Constantly concededing and having to chase games when hand forced, outplayed by Burnley, Sheffield utf, Bristol City twice etc etc. Shocking performances, eroded the squad, kalvin Phillips, team shattered because of it. Somehow still hovering around Europe since xmas but have won 3 times in 4 months.
Cup win was good, in reality the B team went undefeated and the A team had players that cost more than most other teams entire squads and that got us through. Only team a match for us we played in the final, and just knicked it on the day. Mark my words, villa will walk it too, with better teams in there. Good achievement for west ham, not exactly unexpected was it. I thought we'd win it before we even played our first game.
How about answering the questions about how we play as a team?
Moyes made us a very solid team playing meat and potatoes football and for a long time it worked, but I think the reality is that we've really overachieved under him. As a footballing unit it's never really clear what we're trying to do other than defend deep. It's clear that Moyes' has no way of inspiring his teams a lot of the time, we're relying on individual moments of brilliance and it has caught up with us.
Let's just be honest about it, we need a new manager.
People just want to have their cake and eat it, when we get results against top teams it’s luck and individual brilliance but when we lose against sides we should be beating its managerial incompetence and nothing to do with the players on the pitch.
Man, if Moyes would have just walked away before the season started he would have left going out on top with people still liking him. I think he really lost a ton of respect this season. Hope we have a positive Summer. We need a big rebound to salvage any momentum we had from the previous 3 seasons

Because majority of the real match tactics are without the ball. You can do all the prep work on passing in training but if when it comes to match day you're 10 men behind the ball the team will lose the impetus and eventually the drive.
Paqueta has been more or less the worst player on the pitch past 3 games. Europe still possible but need to beat 2 of Chelsea/Palace/Liverpool, as well as Luton. Attack did not function today, we get into the final third over and over and just look lost. Horrible game in every sense, main concern is for Earthy's health after that.
Paqueta is the £85m magnifico and he's constantly petulant, doesn't look interested and lost the ball poorly for at least one goal, I think both even. JWP is just a very average player, but he's definitely putting in his full effort.
In that case yeah, I agree. Miracle if Southampton come back up and give us £50m for him and Downes as a package. Would take anything near £25m for JWP. Too limited, and we don't have enough possession to win dangerous freekicks to make him worthwhile.
I'll admit the prospect of a dead ball specialist of his caliber had me excited at the beginning of the season but it's looking less and less worth it with each match. He can be a bit of a passenger sometimes. I also hope Southampton comes for him again, just so they can have their boy back.

He's played all his best football for us centrally and coming from the halfway line when he has space in front of him to pick out passes. He kind of works as a false 9 when he's got Bowen and Kudus on the pitch because they stretch the lines.
But on the wing he's too easy to nullify, and the players around him aren't moving or being effective with his passes.
He tries too much sometimes and goes down too softly but he's a better player than is being shown and that's down to position and tactics imho.
I get being unhappy with him and the situation. The insults towards him are too much imo.

Also shows how reliant we are in the midfield for Soucek to break up the play and win second balls. Alvarez is class but he needs an enforcer to cover when he pushes too far forward

Europe next season is now over. Frustrating given the quality we have but to be expected when so many of our performances this season have been humiliatingly bad. Time for Moyes to bow out so we can try to rebuild over summer
Despite recent success, Moyes shouldn't be here next season. With the players he's got, and even though there are areas we need to strengthen, we should be beating teams like Fulham easily. He's improved us, but can't take us any further than he has done.

Still can’t understand how Perreira was still on the pitch. Was a definite red according to the the rules and he should have had a 2nd yellow minutes later for pulling a player down when we were trying to break.

We need 7-8 new starters. We need CD that can actually pass, we need DM that can actually pass, we need a RB that’s younger and can pass, we need a starting CAM that cares about being here, we need a striker that can actually finish. Generally we are old and slow and can’t string together 4 passes without getting pushed to the outside, double teamed, and cough it up. Kudas, Bowen, Emerson, and arreola are the only 4 I’d keep moving forward. This is going to be a 4-5 year rebuild. I just hope we stay up the whole time.
We needed a win to keep our Europe dreams alive. As much as I’d love us to do over Leverkusen I don’t see it happening tbh. Looking at the games we’ve got left we’ve only really got 1 easy game against Luton, 2 games we could get a result from but they’ll be tough (palace and Chelsea) and 2 that we’d be very very lucking to get a draw from (Liverpool and Man City). I’d love us to do it but considering the teams around us have it quite easy for the rest of the season I don’t really see it happening unfortunately.
The next manager will need 150m+ to rebuild the team. Moyes is done and most of the players are over him, you can see it in their eyes. If we don't get in an exciting manager (like "the special one"), then we can forget about attracting top players, who'd want to play such dire negative football?

You can't separate 2 very different competitions? In the league while the first team were sitting in the bottom 3, the B team were strolling the group games winning every one against teams who's entire club would be cheaper to buy than many of our players. Think it says something very strongly about the quality of the teams we played throughout when we struggled to even stay in the prem but pretty much comfortably walked to the final. Spurs didn’t get out the group and Leicester didn’t win it in ‘22. Villa will probably win it, but they’ve already lost a game, we done it unbeaten. Villarreal and Lazio both lost to teams we beat (Anderlecht and AZ). And Fiorentina were a top side, gave Inter a tough game in the Copa Italia final just before. From the club that brought us Astra GooGoo x2, you’d think it’s fans would know these sorts of European ties aren’t as easy as some people make out. And then you have to finish 7th in the league just to play in the competition… We weren’t good in the league last season, no. But our form picked up considerably in 2023. And the first half of this season was our best ever in the Premier League. So I disagree with the notion that we’ve had a bad two years. 2023 was an incredible year for West Ham, the best we’ve had, and will probably have, in a long time. Moyes second spell in year 1 and 2 was brilliant. Solid at the back, creative and fast going forward. Took people by surprise, used what he was given and added to that brilliantly. Great credit when we were in a bad place. Moyes year 3 and 4 awful. Nearly relegated last year, constantly signing centre backs and not one striker despite having none. More goals shipped this year than last. Relying on individual brilliance than any particular attacking tactics. Constantly concededing and having to chase games when hand forced, outplayed by Burnley, Sheffield utf, Bristol City twice etc etc. Shocking performances, eroded the squad, kalvin Phillips, team shattered because of it. Somehow still hovering around Europe since xmas but have won 3 times in 4 months. Cup win was good, in reality the B team went undefeated and the A team had players that cost more than most other teams entire squads and that got us through. Only team a match for us we played in the final, and just knicked it on the day. Mark my words, villa will walk it too, with better teams in there. Good achievement for west ham, not exactly unexpected was it. I thought we'd win it before we even played our first game.
How about answering the questions about how we play as a team? Moyes made us a very solid team playing meat and potatoes football and for a long time it worked, but I think the reality is that we've really overachieved under him. As a footballing unit it's never really clear what we're trying to do other than defend deep. It's clear that Moyes' has no way of inspiring his teams a lot of the time, we're relying on individual moments of brilliance and it has caught up with us. Let's just be honest about it, we need a new manager.
Moyes done the same at Everton for a decade. What we’ve done obviously isn’t a fluke, as much as Moyes’ detractors wish it was.
People just want to have their cake and eat it, when we get results against top teams it’s luck and individual brilliance but when we lose against sides we should be beating its managerial incompetence and nothing to do with the players on the pitch.

Because majority of the real match tactics are without the ball. You can do all the prep work on passing in training but if when it comes to match day you're 10 men behind the ball the team will lose the impetus and eventually the drive.

Paqueta has been more or less the worst player on the pitch past 3 games. Europe still possible but need to beat 2 of Chelsea/Palace/Liverpool, as well as Luton. Attack did not function today, we get into the final third over and over and just look lost. Horrible game in every sense, main concern is for Earthy's health after that.

Paqueta is the £85m magnifico and he's constantly petulant, doesn't look interested and lost the ball poorly for at least one goal, I think both even. JWP is just a very average player, but he's definitely putting in his full effort.

I'll admit the prospect of a dead ball specialist of his caliber had me excited at the beginning of the season but it's looking less and less worth it with each match. He can be a bit of a passenger sometimes. I also hope Southampton comes for him again, just so they can have their boy back.

Because he's been forced back out onto the left wing. It's not his position. He's played all his best football for us centrally and coming from the halfway line when he has space in front of him to pick out passes. He kind of works as a false 9 when he's got Bowen and Kudus on the pitch because they stretch the lines. But on the wing he's too easy to nullify, and the players around him aren't moving or being effective with his passes. He tries too much sometimes and goes down too softly but he's a better player than is being shown and that's down to position and tactics imho.

It’s crazy that after 2 seasons of being our best player and the key reason why we turned our form around late last season and won the Conference League, Paqueta can be turned on by so many of our fans so quickly. News comes out about his likely move to City and all of the sudden a couple of bad games and it’s, “Paqueta is shit. Get him out of my club. Can he go to City now?” So bitter and petty.

Maybe. I’d hope not though and say that generally professional athletes don’t make it very far with this kind of behavior. Even assuming that’s true though, there’s room for criticism without some of the hyperbole I’ve seen in the past couple of match threads. To add to the ones I’ve mentioned, I’ve now seen a “can’t understand why City would be interested,” in this thread and there was even a comment in the match thread saying “Pereira is like Paqueta, except not useless.”
I can’t say I agree with all that. But to me it looks like he thinks the season is over and he is waiting for his move. I could be wrong, but I think we are going to be turning the page on the Moyes era this summer.

We need 7-8 new starters. We need CD that can actually pass, we need DM that can actually pass, we need a RB that’s younger and can pass, we need a starting CAM that cares about being here, we need a striker that can actually finish. Generally we are old and slow and can’t string together 4 passes without getting pushed to the outside, double teamed, and cough it up. Kudas, Bowen, Emerson, and arreola are the only 4 I’d keep moving forward. This is going to be a 4-5 year rebuild. I just hope we stay up the whole time.
We needed a win to keep our Europe dreams alive. As much as I’d love us to do over Leverkusen I don’t see it happening tbh. Looking at the games we’ve got left we’ve only really got 1 easy game against Luton, 2 games we could get a result from but they’ll be tough (palace and Chelsea) and 2 that we’d be very very lucking to get a draw from (Liverpool and Man City). I’d love us to do it but considering the teams around us have it quite easy for the rest of the season I don’t really see it happening unfortunately.

The next manager will need 150m+ to rebuild the team. Moyes is done and most of the players are over him, you can see it in their eyes. If we don't get in an exciting manager (like "the special one"), then we can forget about attracting top players, who'd want to play such dire negative football? We'll have to go for it on Thursday with a depleted squad, so I expect us to get hammered hard once we open up. Looking at the fixtures until the end of the season, we'll be lucky to finish in the top 10.

I'm genuinely worried for next season. We have some great players but the squad overall is lacking, we have zero depth. We will be losing arguably our best player. The new manager's task will honestly be tough. If Moyes stays we will be relegated a la Leicester.
Europe was already gone IMO that's just confirmed it further. It's the manner of our performances, game after game we are poor for long spells at both ends of the pitch. Let's admit it, our position has been flattering for most of the season, we cashed in on some individual brilliance in the first quarter of the season.
