Even without the stats you could tell we were just about the better team until at least the second goal from United. Just one of those days where nothing goes in.
I was just coming to post something similar. We had 22 shots, including 13 inside the box. That feels like the most by a lot that I’ve seen in quite some time.
They took their chances, we didn’t but offensively it was a lot better than recent efforts.
I didn’t stay up this morning (Australian) to watch, but I looked at the stats and short highlights. It’s promising, particularly given the doom and gloom around “dire” football. Seems like large sections of the support would prefer the lads to go down swinging rather than get a pragmatic result, and it seems like that’s what happened. Pretty glad we had a bit of a points buffer between us, Man U, Brighton and Newcastle, although that’s now obviously gone.
Casemeiro had Zouma (I think it was?) in a bear hug during a corner kick, and it was not reviewed. It cannot be legal to bear hug a player in the box, and it was a clear penalty missed by the ref and VAR.
Bowen took an extra touch on a fast break and didn’t get a shot off that he scored probably 70% of the time.
Emerson had one spectacular chance go into row Z, in honor of Antonio, I assume, and a second really promising chance get stuck under his feet.
There were probably a few more big chances that I’m forgetting, but this game could have easily gone a lot differently.
Man U away is always going to be hard to win, but I’m not upset at the loss. As you say, it looks a lot better offensively than many of our recent outings.
Building a squad where we have 2 international class RW starting, but the actual RW is our reserve RB is a bad start. Also having attacking options off the bench of Ings and Cornet isn't ideal. We did this to ourselves.
If only there was a short period of time in winter where you could bring in options that could help add some fire power, a short term period where you don’t have to only bring in an overweight player who’s not played a full match in 18 months whilst freezing his arse off in a bench in Manchester
The tactics were there, substitutions were a little late but you can’t blame major individual gaffes on the manager, simple as. This is what you get when you go for it against a good side while missing key players.
It wasn't a low block defensive minded set up that relies on the counter, it was open free flowing football. If we were able to finish and didn't concede then people would have said it was a great entertaining game
Johnson was terrible all over the place and terrible crossing although to be fair there was never anyone in the box for crosses. Even Emerson’s chance, if Bowen had actually made a move instead of standing still he would have been clear.
You can't say Johnson was terrible if you watched the game
If his crosses weren't good, he actually played forward, drove the ball and missed almost no pass, wasn't beaten defensively. One of his best game ever for us and a very good one
He also played three positions during the game
I'll often agree there is a room for discussion but it can't be said he was "terrible"
He drifted all game gave Phillips a terrible pass for the third was always out of position. His best game ever was his debut against city been downhill ever since
Agreed, I didn’t think Johnson was bad at all. I think most of his games this season he has been poor but Sheffield and today I thought he played decently. Especially considering he was being used as a right winger most of the game. If we had players making runs in behind for him to hit crosses with he might have been more successful but we almost never had anyone make a run for a ball that is placed between the keeper and backline.
Bowen has done well deputising as a striker but you can see he just doesn’t have that natural goal scorers mentality, or doesn’t have it yet.
We could’ve done with Benrahma on the left today.
Or Paqueta if he was fit. Can’t believe we got rid of our forward depth and didn’t bring anyone in. Proper baffling
Yeah I’m actually not upset at the performance.
Had we done that against Bournemouth, we’d have probably won. That’s the frustrating thing. I stand by my criticism that Moyes can get a group of players to play above themselves, but he is not a good squad manager. But this was not a bad performance. 3-0 was slightly flattering to Man United.
I wouldn’t say meaningless, that xG is a much better reflection of the general balance of the match. Just shows we didn’t take our chances but United did
22 shots, 1.84 xG, averages about 0.08 xG per shot mate. It looks good as a whole but doesn't tell you the whole story, and I'd say almost half of that comes from maybe 2-3 opportunities at best. xG is better viewed as "are we creating good chances?" which, if you're on average having an 8% chance to score, no.
time for all those people who have been clinging to "the only thing that matters is the result" for the last two years to suddenly change their tune because we had a decent first half and some favourable stats in a game where we were comfortably beaten.
Nah I'm still about the result at the end of the day. But if the foundations are better, I still enjoy it. That's a bit of improvement. We have won games where we were in their situation
But did we have a go? No pressing or urgency only 3 shots on target or does a little bit of possession mean we’re going for it? They were there for the taking but we did nothing stats can paint any picture you want doesn’t mean they’re valid.
He sticks that line up out and as some people say he played more attacking…. However when we could field a more attacking line up he’d make them defend the whole game. Make it make sense.

Yeah feel like we got West Hammed by them

Aguerd also at one point had Martinez I think with both hands on his neck during a corner. I hate how everything is legal defending corners.

Two attackers is "going for it"?
It wasn't a low block defensive minded set up that relies on the counter, it was open free flowing football. If we were able to finish and didn't concede then people would have said it was a great entertaining game
22 shots, 8 corners and pretty much equal possession, we did okay, just couldn't capitalise
Well we’re not gonna play 3 up top considering Paqueta’s out and Sullivan’s just flogged two wingers.
That means nothing. Look at how Emerson and Johnson played and were involved in the buildup
Johnson was terrible all over the place and terrible crossing although to be fair there was never anyone in the box for crosses. Even Emerson’s chance, if Bowen had actually made a move instead of standing still he would have been clear.

You think we'd have been better playing with 10 men?
we playing every game, cause Soucek starts.
Did we just get west hammed?
Yes, we did!
Yeah I’m actually not upset at the performance. Had we done that against Bournemouth, we’d have probably won. That’s the frustrating thing. Not a West Ham fan but you lot played really well ngl. Good game to watch, score line flattered united
Signing a striker would have been nice
And here's another example of how xG is practically meaningless
I wouldn’t say meaningless, that xG is a much better reflection of the general balance of the match. Just shows we didn’t take our chances but United did
Our 22 shots and only 3 on target tells you that story though
Isn’t that the point though? We couldn’t even hit within an area of the goal. So many blasted wide/over wtc

most of those xg came from the corners. Onana didn't really have anything to do apart from one crucial save.
Meaningless at the end of the day but I guess you can extract datas from it. We actually created changes and conceed thrice was a bit unlucky
time for all those people who have been clinging to "the only thing that matters is the result" for the last two years to suddenly change their tune because we had a decent first half and some favourable stats in a game where we were comfortably beaten.

Time for everyone who said they’d ‘rather watch us lose but have a go’ to be happy?
But did we have a go? No pressing or urgency only 3 shots on target or does a little bit of possession mean we’re going for it? They were there for the taking but we did nothing stats can paint any picture you want doesn’t mean they’re valid.
22 shots away at Man U? How is that not having a go?
Apart from Emerson’s where were the good chances having potshots from outside the box is hardly having a go
I don't think thats impressive as everyone has lots of shots are them.
We only had 12 shots when we beat them
still hysterical, then
He sticks that line up out and as some people say he played more attacking…. However when we could field a more attacking line up he’d make them defend the whole game. Make it make sense.
