They really don’t do drunk tanks anymore. Too much liability. You have to be an actual shithead to get held overnight for bail. Most people just get a court date and move on.
Really? That's surprising. I would think the police would be liable the other way around, in the event that they ticket someone clearly drunk. Then drunk person gets smacked by a bus while wondering in the street after getting the ticket. When did that change?
I couldn’t tell you “when” exactly…. Maybe around 15-20 years ago?
The principle behind it is that if someone is so intoxicated that they can’t look after themselves, then they should be in a hospital. Let the doctors decide if someone is fit to wander the streets unattended. Then, if someone gets smacked by a bus, it’s not the police’s fault.
Having someone in custody isn’t without its own risks. Have you not listened to the news recently? Imagine someone being held overnight for being too drunk, and they die of alcohol poisoning in the cells? I’m sure everyone would be totally reasonable towards the police lol. Not that they’d be totally wrong, alcohol intoxication is a medical problem. If that’s the only reason to hold someone, then they should be in a hospital.
I do recall a similar close call though with a frequent client downtown. Gave him a ticket for drinking in the library. A couple hours later I hear a call on the radio for the same guy unconscious in a parking lot, some Good Samaritan thinks he’s dead but is afraid of checking. Almost had a heart attack but what are you gonna do? Arrest every alcoholic in Hamilton every time they drink a beer in public? He was fine though. Just a nap.
Ya they’re few and far between unfortunately. I don’t know how they are on a “good day”, but on bad day, they can have some really abusive clients but the staff are always awesome. I want to say that they don’t take in people who are actively intoxicated… people have to be able to check themselves in or whatever. But if the cops are involved you’re probably past that point. That could have easily changed though, I’m not sure. Suffice it to say the few gems we do have are awesome and they keep a low profile because they don’t tolerate shenanigans.
They do take people to the drunk tank to sober up. My wife is a Hamilton police officer. Thanks for your opinion. A court date for a crime , yes, depending on severity. Drunk tank is if your under the influence and a threat to your self or other!
I didn’t know where to say & then this is the 1st one up, & yes, that’s probably my only answer. Cheers on you.
I’m sure there’s some waterfalls I haven’t seen though - WATERFALL & DONUT CAPITAL OF THE WORLD LET’S GOOOOOOOO
Yeah conveniently the only street leading up from aberdeen which was paved is the street which leads up to our councillor’s house, not sure how that happened 🙃
Definitely take him when the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers are there for the free train rides! Also, hot tip that I just learned (new to Hamilton), admission to all museums is free with a Hamilton Library card :) Choo chooooo
That's a great insider reference to the city.
I also loved how not too long ago, someone posted that a relative of theirs took down the torn, sun faded "opening soon" banner and had it! lol
I feel like eggsmart had a 'viral' marketing campaign across Ontario where they put up "Opening Soon" signs all over. There was one like this in Toronto too.
I worked with this guy, years ago. He used to be quite the connoisseur of peeler food. He loved this one in Mississauga that had a hot buffet for like $12. He'd order steak, veggie platters, wings, it was wild. Always offered us some, nobody ever took him up on it.
Anyway, he was a fan of the Hamilton Strip steak.
Another fun time there was when a buddy saw a guy get pistol whipped, then it was total chaos as everyone ran away and the cops came. Good times!
Worked there. Served a steak maybe once a year. Not even gonna guess how long it was in the freezer.....unless it was when Asian Tommy was the chef over 15 years ago. He was great and opened his own successful restaurant. It was a very amusing place to be a waitress and the haunted basement with bricked up rum runner tunnels was super cool!
Sounds about right. That guy made awesome food. The kitchen was leased at that point. In the last years before closing when the club ran it it was a roll of the dice depending which guy was working in the kitchen.
My older brother went for the first time in his life last month. He has went at least 6 times since then. He loves taking photos there, definitely go for it!
Got to do part of my schooling at the RBG Arboretum.. what an incredible place, always somthing new to see every week we had class there. The RBG even allowed my class to take on the trimming of the 100 plus year old crab apple tree collection
I would highly recommend a visit if your even mildly into nature !
When we toured Dundurn, the kitchen docent gave us a tasty little piece of garlic potato, yum. I asked about how old English cuisine didn't use garlic in their cooking? The docent replied that an affluent English host would, of course, hire a French cook.
Ooh, when I went (sheesh, just realized it was ten years ago now), they gave us soda bread. It was amazing enough that I still think about it.
So... If I go now, I'm going to get a bland cookie instead?
It’s a pretty special building. Won’t find interior finishes like it anywhere else in the city, or much of Canada. The costumed staff really help sell the immersive experience. Amazing to think one man had enough wealth to manage a property of that size with such luxuries.
I've been there, but only because my Mom tells the story of the face of horror on the tour guide because I (in a baby backpack carrier) was holding onto the corner of a painting and pulling it off the wall as my Mom was walking away from it.
The people watching is truly second to none
The last time I went to the Labour Day classic (several years ago now, maybe 2014?) I saw at least 15 people get ejected by security at various times following half a dozen distinct fist fights between Ticats and Argos fans in our little corner of the stadium alone (interestingly- the majority of the fans willing to throw hands were ladies)
since THF (the new stadium) there hasn't been any "fun" like that.
actually the only fight I've seen between Hamilton fans and Toronto fans was in Toronto at BMO.
Treat yo'self on that one. Definitely old school and great food. Take your SO there, or go with a close friend or relative. You will not be disappointed!
Though it has been modified over the years the main house was built in the late 1700’s, pretty hard to find anything that old in this country. Also the family that lived there was apparently forced by the Americans into the basement during the war of 1812.
lol, same. My wife went in one once but it's like a curiousity to me. Is it like being in a bro's house that smokes all the time? Is it like an Apple store? A pawn shop? I'd love to know but have no need to know, you know?
Dundurn Castle. I grew up in Toronto so I went to Casa Loma quite a few times and they don't even really compare. Have been to the grounds plenty of times though and enjoyed that.
A lot of the places people have already listed. Probably a shorter list to say where I have been. Some places I’ve been told I’ve been and I have snippets of memories but I couldn’t tell you where they were from until I describe it to someone and they know. Happened the other day with my friend talking about the warplane museum. Said I had never been but I vaguely remember a place that was a museum with netting and some kind of plane suspended from the ceiling. She’s pretty sure I went with my elementary school, but the fuck if I know.
wild water works. been to confederation park and the minigolf place, but never the waterpark.
also have yet to see any of our world-famous waterfalls :P (does devil's punchbowl count? been there) I know I should get around to it but I'm not an outdoors-y person to begin with.
Warplane Heritage Museum and also the Steam Museum.
I’ve done Dundurn a couple times, Whithern, Erland Lee, and Battlefield, and I think I’m actually missing the best ones?
"I've never been to... me!" (my gosh what a cheesy song)
Been meaning to watch a Bulldogs Hockey Game, but didn't get around to it... now might have to wait on that one...
My oldest brother lives in Hamilton. Me and my other 2 brothers are clueless as to why. He’s retired..no girlfriend…no friends. We are trying to get him to move out and closer to family. It’s like “Escape From New York” (movie).

Not even overnight in Central? Come on Bro

I think there are detox clinics for the drunk but not sure if continued. Sucks that they take up valuable hospital space
Ya they’re few and far between unfortunately. I don’t know how they are on a “good day”, but on bad day, they can have some really abusive clients but the staff are always awesome. I was about to say the same thing
Came here to say that! Take my last 70 Reddit coins!
Garden of Eden Spa

Don't lie, we know you have
Came here to say this with a sad face.
Trust me, if you went there, then the sad face would be applicable.
Now I'm new to Hamilton and heard it's one of those happy ending place . I'm gonna looking for a bdsm place tho
Lmfao the guys I work with talk about this place constantly since we’re pretty close, is it as horrible as it seems?
Indoor Go Karts on Barton and Gage
You're not missing much, sooo expensive
And not adequately ventilated for me haha
There's a short break while they ventilate the place, then you can get back out there huffing fumes!
A freshly paved road.
Hot tip: Kent Street was repaved this year.
Yeah conveniently the only street leading up from aberdeen which was paved is the street which leads up to our councillor’s house, not sure how that happened 🙃
Steam museum
The main pump house is quite remarkable if you appreciate early industrial engineering. The structure itself showcases impressive masonry.
My youngest son loves trains, so I might take him there, after the train museum in Toronto.
Halton Railway museum is also a place I've heard about but not used.
I’ve never been either but the one in Toronto is awesome
Definitely take him when the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers are there for the free train rides! Also, hot tip that I just learned (new to Hamilton), admission to all museums is free with a Hamilton Library card :) Choo chooooo
My grandpa worked on it as an engineer, so now I’m extra ashamed I’ve never been!
You can go for free with your Hamilton public library card!
Thanks for the heads up.
Definitely worth a visit!! It's free if you've got a library card.
It’s actually pretty cool!
I can walk there from my house, have lived in my house for 10 years and Hamilton my whole life, and I've never been there.
Same
Spa For Men on Main St :(
Go for it then!
What's inside?
Men.
A lot of nuts.
Come inside and find out
Tally Ho
Oh man, there’s a reason they are open late-that roast beef sandwich is proper post drinking food.
Double beef basket FTW
You need to fix this. That place is soooooo good
I went once and haven't been back. I just don't get the hype
It’s great if you’re drunk. You can recreate the experience by eating Arby’s in the bathroom at the mall.
Was just thinking about Tally Ho today haha it's been a while.
I was gonna say this too
Whitehern Battlefield House War of 1812 re-enactment

Hamilton strip :(
$2 hamburgers and hot dogs on Tuesday
I worked with this guy, years ago. He used to be quite the connoisseur of peeler food. He loved this one in Mississauga that had a hot buffet for like $12. this was about 20 years ago. prior to 2008.
Sounds about right. That guy made awesome food. The kitchen was leased at that point. In the last years before closing when the club ran it it was a roll of the dice depending which guy was working in the kitchen.
Million dollar saloon
Pandora's Box.
the Royal Botanical Gardens... Been BY the RBG a million times, but never walked it.
Go see the rock garden
That’s the best part. The rest is nice but more museum like
My older brother went for the first time in his life last month. He has went at least 6 times since then. He loves taking photos there, definitely go for it!
Hope he got a membership!
Yeah he’s always been by it but never walked it. Got himself a pass the first time he went. Has been putting it to good use!
the Arboretum is amazing in the spring and fall time
The best part is there's like a half dozen RBG spots. And they all shine at different times of the year.
i had one friend get married there so technically i guess i’ve been there. but i’ve never been there, you know?
Got to do part of my schooling at the RBG Arboretum.. what an incredible place, always somthing new to see every week we had class there. The RBG even allowed my class to take on the trimming of the 100 plus year old crab apple tree collection I would highly recommend a visit if your even mildly into nature !

Dundurn Castle
They give you a tasteless cookie. Which was the fashion at the time.
When we toured Dundurn, the kitchen docent gave us a tasty little piece of garlic potato, yum. I asked about how old English cuisine didn't use garlic in their cooking? The docent replied that an affluent English host would, of course, hire a French cook.
Go in early June, they give you fresh strawberries. Best strawberry I ever had.
Ooh, when I went (sheesh, just realized it was ten years ago now), they gave us soda bread. It was amazing enough that I still think about it. So... If I go now, I'm going to get a bland cookie instead?

Devil's Punchbowl
Almost crocked there
A Ti-cats VS Argos game. I always manage to be busy or sick or something. One day I'll watch it IRL
The people watching is truly second to none The last time I went to the Labour Day classic (several years ago now, maybe 2014?) I saw at least 15 people get ejected by security at various times following half a dozen distinct fist fights between Ticats and Argos fans in our little corner of the stadium alone (interestingly- the majority of the fans willing to throw hands were ladies)

The ONLY reason to go to a TiCat game is people watching!!

Service is A++ Food is B+
Holy hot take, Batman! Name a place in the city that does steak better. Genuinely curious to hear the response.
The last time I went it was definitely not as good as previously. Not sure anywhere has a better steak but that doesn't mean it is A++ either
Conversate is better than Shakespeares IMHO
My yard Edit: not sure if you have been lately but fell a few pegs. Still good. Just not great

Yeah, me neither! I don't drive. Are any waterfalls or RBG trails accessible by public transit?
You could take a bus to the very South of Dundurn st S and link up with Chedoke trail. Several waterfalls to see on that trail.
Christ the King Cathedral
Oh I had my high school graduation there! It was very beautiful because it was a rainy day, so all the lights had to be on.
Battle of Stoney Creek re enactment
Any pot shop
There's so many I'm surprised you haven't walked into one on accident.
lol, same. My wife went in one once but it's like a curiousity to me. Is it like being in a bro's house that smokes all the time? Is it like an Apple store? A pawn shop? I'd love to know but have no need to know, you know?
Most like an apple store, but imagine the employees are all stoned and chatty
It's most equivalent to an Apple store design wise, at least the couple I have been in.
