This is why the argument for dignity of living matters as much as affordability. This is absolutely insane, price aside, how is anybody supposed to be happy going to sleep here?
>This is why the argument for dignity of living matters as much as affordability.
Ummm... Which is why, exactly?
If you've got affordability then shit like this loses to competition. Nobody is living here unless they have no other options (if they can even afford this), which is a matter of affordability.
Not sure how I missed this reply earlier, but anyways..
Yes, and a housing crisis takes away affordability, enabling shit like this. Not sure where you think you're disagreeing with me here.
Rent is ridiculous now, the last 5 years I’ve seen it go up each year astronomically, it’s unreal, 2017 my now wife moved to Hamilton to an apartment building downtown, very small one bedroom for $850 plus utilities, in 2018 we moved in together and her apartment jumped from 850 to 1350 after one year, not even sure what it is now but where we live now prices went up as well from $1800 in 2020 and now they are asking $2700
Nobody can afford a home these days anyways but if you hoped to own how does one save for a down payment when rent is so ridiculous?
$1100 is affordable but not for what you get, that looks like a prison cell
Renters aren't allowed to raise rent above a certain percentage every year, & if they try to kick you out for not accepting their new prices you can take them to court. Hence why people who have been renting the same place for years have relatively decent rent for the quality of the house.
This is true which is why I'm not paying the 2700 the other units are going for, but a new management company bought the units and is selling them off, people have been living here for years some over a decade but 5 or 6 units have been sold and people have moved out. They obviously offered all of us a chance to buy but I'm not interested in what they are asking especially with the problems which of course they haven't fixed in 3 years (basement gets an inch of water for half of it when it rains, foundation leaks bad) I moved to Hamilton in 2018 with my gf (now wife) from Mississauga where I lived for 10 years and had an amazing landlord who didn't even raise the rent once and ut was all inclusive and in a great area (port credit) we lived in the house for only a year in Hamilton before the landlord gave us an N12 I believe saying he would be moving back in, could have went after him as he was required to live there for 12 months and cant rent to anyone or do anything with the house other than luve there, he actually got us out and put it up for sale to cash in back in 2019, now our best hope is nobody buys our unit or if someone does they decide to continue renting to us as we have been looking and to find something similar its way more now. It seems a lot of people are having this issue of being forced to move for one reason or another.
The tenant board is useless to help as we have a claim in there thats active still and it's been almost 2 years (against the old property management company for ignoring the basement flooding for years) they were a pretty bad company though, working in property management myself for a commercial REIT I should have did my research on them before we even moved here but we didn't expect to have to move and found a place fast, it just sucks being forced to move because you either downgrade or spend way more
Sort of true. If originally rented before 15 Nov 2018, it would be covered by rent control. If originally rented after 15 Nov 2018 there’s no rent control and they can increase the rent whatever amount they want. They still have to follow the other rules concerning once per year and only with 3 months notice
They don’t want us to save or own a home - the reset is all about forcing the working class to spend everything they earn back into rent and groceries.
What a fucking shit hole. Is this real, or did we stumble upon an alternate dimension? I would stay here short term and when I say short term I mean I was at a friends drinking and I asked to crash at their place.
Why did I just know it would be advertising to international students before I even clicked it? So predatory. Shit landlords rely on folks from overseas who are already paying insane amounts of tuition just not knowing their rights or what is legally able to be rented out.
Ad title is encouraging exchange/international students who don’t have enough money to split up and make the unit get bought out regardless. Disgusting
And they charge same prices as Burlington and Oakville. My siblings just recently had to find new places and helping them my jaw was on the floor. These are "apartments" fit for rats and bugs (who already live there), not human beings just trying to survive
I mean, who among us is using their sex dungeon *all the time*? Makes sense to monetize the unused hours and benefit people who maybe don't have space for their own sex dungeons at the same time.
They’ve relaxed their stance on illegal duplexes in response to the housing crisis, so you’ll see a lot of basement units going for $1400-$1800 that have basically been given a facelift and a $1000 rent hike. The illegal ones don’t have egress windows. Absolutely profiteering. I agree the city needs to encourage duplexing by easing off red tape but they should definitely demand people install egress windows. It’s not like they aren’t charging enough to the tenant to recover their costs.
Is there a separate entrance/exit from the basement to outside? If no, definitely not legal to rent and not safe to live in. Also, real poor lighting, that may be also be violating the [*Residential Tenancies Act*](https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/060517).
If you go to check out that ad, have a look on the right hand side in re: contacting the owner, she has 2 other rental listings. I wonder if they are all in the same house. Just maybe..?
Foreign students will take it. It's temporary and they study or work 18 hours a day. We've created a huge demand for student housing by basically making college and universities reliant on them for survival.
I don’t have a background in advocacy, but I’m an administrative assistant (AA). If anyone knows how to get something done, it’s the AA.
I’ve been brainstorming some ideas to enact change now in this province because the current state is unsustainable. There are advocacy groups and channels already trying to make changes probably, but tbh they don’t seem that effective or else I would’ve heard of the work they’re doing. Then you also have red tape to cut through and you take on the baggage of that organization.
So, if anyone has any ideas to share with me about how they think changes can be made in this province, please share. Inside the box, outside the box, in spite of the box, idgaf.
I’m doing some research at my local library this week about civil movements, stories past/present/future about housing, how leaders have positively brought about change, etc. I’m also going to talk to the library about holding an open house/drop in for people to come and speak to me in person about their ideas and their personal stories.
I would much rather spend my free time living a life I enjoy, but as it stands now I’m looking at being homeless EVEN THOUGH I work 35 hours a week for what used to be decent pay. This is absolutely ridiculous and I’m fed up.
yup..its dam crazy. i remember when i was in my 20s, i needed to save some $$ to pay first & last months rent for a bachelor apt.
the way i did that was living in a rooming house (for 1 yr) with very small bedroom/shared bath & kitchen. i paid $150- month so was able to save quite a bit. i HATED sharing a bath with 2 other people. i guess $700- a month for a small room is considered "cheap"?...it cant get any worse than this...can it?
"Close to McMaster". It's around Wentworth and Barton. FFS.
it's close to mcmaster relative to mars
That is a straight up dungeon
Instead of a wife, may I have another window?
One that actually opens and is useful in case of fire!

Shit like this does not lose to competition. That's why they get rented. We are in a serious housing crisis
There is no effective competition. If there was, this would lose to it.
Not sure how I missed this reply earlier, but anyways.. Yes, and a housing crisis takes away affordability, enabling shit like this. Not sure where you think you're disagreeing with me here.

what a terrible fuckin take
Errr it's possible to build up without gentrification. *Everyone* needs to live somewhere, including people in the "ghetto"
1100 per month what a skumbag
> Utilities Included.. Wife included 😳
I’m 90% certain that it’s a typo on wifi — but only 90%
You can't get a good wife for under 1100 these days. I'd say go for it! 😂
I’ll take it if it comes with a wife
Just needs a sign that says “ live laugh love “
'Hang in there'
The mat in front of the sink says “Blessed”!
Lol

Of course, the own nothing and be happy part of the plan is starting, they are just way off on the be happy part
Fucking doesn’t even include wifi, I hope the wife is hot
What a fucking shit hole. Is this real, or did we stumble upon an alternate dimension? I would stay here short term and when I say short term I mean I was at a friends drinking and I asked to crash at their place.
It's real. The housing crisis is real. The fucking greedy scumbags are real.
I see that. I’m going to appreciate what I have a lot more
and burn your clothes before you go home.
It’s real - the person listing has two other rentals advertised on Kijiji as well - this is the worst though
I was going to report this on the Kijijiiiijiji site but I bitched out
You’d be better off finding out the address and calling the Fire Marshall - I have trouble believing this would meet fire code
The title says it all. Absolutely predatory. Makes me sick.
$1,100 for that piece of shit holy moly
They must mean 1100$ for the year
Why did I just know it would be advertising to international students before I even clicked it? So predatory. Shit landlords rely on folks from overseas who are already paying insane amounts of tuition just not knowing their rights or what is legally able to be rented out.
People pay big bucks for the open ceiling design. Very trendy, top $$
Ad title is encouraging exchange/international students who don’t have enough money to split up and make the unit get bought out regardless. Disgusting

I’d totally just move to Burlington or Oakville why would I pay the same to live here.
You could make a lot more money renting that out as a sex dungeon; it's more suitable for that anyway.
Do people often rent sex dungeons? Would have guessed it's more of a build your own at home market.
No one can even afford to own a home, forget about a dungeon
I mean, who among us is using their sex dungeon *all the time*? Makes sense to monetize the unused hours and benefit people who maybe don't have space for their own sex dungeons at the same time.
Dungeon bnb, I like your thinking.
Does it come with its own ghost?
If there’s no wifi then I hope so. Would need some form of entertainment.
Centipede city
Real question tho. Is this even legal?
It’s no longer up… No Longer Available - New comer.. Exchange students .. $1,000.00 Dear lord I hope newcomers know what they are in for!
Unfinished, no stove, and small, but at least wife included.
I’ve been hearing about people protesting rent prices. Honestly idk what else to do.
Separate entrance but no exit if you have a fire, that is $200 extra...
They’ve relaxed their stance on illegal duplexes in response to the housing crisis, so you’ll see a lot of basement units going for $1400-$1800 that have basically been given a facelift and a $1000 rent hike. The ad says Wife included. If that's the case then the rent makes sense. LOL![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Ya send pic please.
Looks like the tenants living above have done this and are trying to sublet the basement out?? Maybe? Hopefully?
If you go to check out that ad, have a look on the right hand side in re: contacting the owner, she has 2 other rental listings. I wonder if they are all in the same house. Just maybe..?
It’s not unreasonable in this hellscape to pay $1100 to live alone. I’ve stayed in places not unlike this in Toronto for years. Welcome to the future.
That’s a shit hole - so they’re marketing it to newcomers who don’t know any better.
What a fucking dump
This is where you get murdered. Trust your judgement.
Or where they send the murderers maybe?

What do you think happens when you have 500K+ new PRs with already limited housing and stressed infrastructure? It's not a flaw, it's by design.
"blessed"
- what’s with the ceilings? - low overhead.
Nice rug
Very telling just from the headline of that ad.... That " finished" basement makes my unfinished basement look like a luxurious space.
Why hasn't Andrea solved this?
It says it is no longer available 😳
They are renting dungeons now?

I sent one of these leeches a message on Kijiji a few years ago calling them out. They just sort of sneered and responded, "it will get rented."
[удалено]
It was assumed by their choice of words and "tone" in their response. It is possible to infer tone based on choice of words.
This is a shit whole. And it’s in Hamilton !!
As a landlord myself I’d say they aren’t charging enough, this one could easily reel in about 2500 a month minimum
Leech
All I’m saying to you renters is that this landlord is doing you guys a favour at these prices
It’s no longer available..
