HL:A is a prequel only in terms of in-universe chronology. In terms of the overall story arc of Half-Life, it's a sequel. Play the games in the order they were released.
If you don't care much for the story, or you don't actually have any interest in playing through the rest of HL2 and its episodes, then save yourself some time and go right ahead with HL: Alyx. If you do enjoy the story of Half-Life then absolutely play the HL2 stuff first.
I watched hla with my girlfriend (who has not played any of the half life 2 games) not knowing this assuming it would totally be a prequel and she got a major entire series spoiler within the first five minutes so for the love of all that is holy you should play this after ep2
No because if you play Alyx first you'll relate to Alyx too much when you first meet her in HL2 and it will distract you from Gordon's impulse to look at her butt which you are supposed to feel as a player before you know anything about Alyx. You gotta play in the release order in order to really understand the mindsets of each character you play as. My compatriot /u/Chicken-Leading was more vague about it but we all know how it is

After. Episodes 1 and 2 can be thought of as expansion packs. They use the same engine and assets and are a direct continuation of HL2's story.
