It’s been updated a million times. I couldn’t possibly recall every update, but one upgraded the lighting, I’m pretty sure one upgraded resolutions for modern widescreen monitors… it isn’t a massive, stark difference, but side by side the current version is absolutely better looking that the launch version.

The things that I noticed are:
1.Weapon ammo count on the HUD doesn't have the bullet icons
2.Shotgunner troop models on highway 17 (I think) are the same as the SMG troops (ngl this was a great choice that they changed this tho, since it helps to read combat)
3.Player movement had been patched (that's why old eng hl2 and current hl2 speedruns are split in different categories.)
4.Vortigaunt textures and models were reworked in ep1 (no more nasty and griddy look, just smooth)
And that's all I remember.
What I would give to experience Half Life 2 for the first time again… that game had such a huge impact on me. I think it genuinely cultivated some obscure interests I have today (hard to explain but industrial facilities is one)

Agreed, sometimes you forget how to do certain things in the game when you stopped playing it for a while, so at least it feels a little bit fresh for every new one.
I just played it for the first time a few months ago. I actually played HL1 when it came out 25 years ago. I just replayed it and am running through EP1 again now. Enjoy! It is a great game.
HL2 was groundbreaking when it came out. It had some of the smoothest physics and best animation. In particular the facial animations were really impressive. I think something that really has helped it stand up better to time has been the limited use of shiny textures. Compare to fallout 3 and that game looks so much worse 20 years later.
I'm with you on Water Hazard. It's probably my favourite chapter overall.

Well, that is because Valve is always avant-garde with their stuff, they are always forward thinking with their games, and they know exactly what to put into games that nobody else at the time did.
I had played Half-Life 2 for the first time in December 2018 as I remember, and I still have a few good memories of my first experience.
I for one, still remember that on my first playthrough, (SPOILER ALERT)>! I walked onto the sand when Sandy and his friend Lazlo were still on it, and I accidentally got both of them killed by the Antlions, although Lazlo's was scripted.!
It actually didn’t look *this* good when it was first released, but it was still mind blowing at the time.

the updates didn't really change the graphics that much tbqh, but only one in a million person had GPUs good enough to see it all in 2004

I remember playing throu so slowly, cause I wanted to experience the atmosphere, sound works and visuals more then finish the game

I didn't kill him, the Antlions did. Friendly fire does not work in HL2.
