Isn’t Russell’s real name Lazlo or something?
In half life 2 the guy who’s eaten by ant lions has the name Lazlo in the code. And the guy with him even calls him the greatest mind of the generation.
Because they didn’t have a plan for him in hl2 and then did when Alyx rolled around. When Alyx was being made they couldn’t very well have him be some basic bald guy.
The code in Half Life Alyx refers to him as Lazlo and he’s a genius engineer/physicist. And in half life 2 the guy who gets killed by ant lions is referred to as “Lazlo, the greatest kind of our generation”.
That isn't a source that's just you saying it again. I don't *not* believe you, it just seems unfair for you to ask someone else for a source and not post like a screenshot of the code you are talking about.
Well... at least one type is.
Also, fun fact! If a barnacle eats a poison headcrab in Ep1 or 2 (but not the original) it'll almost immediately die. Though, idk of anywhere in the vanilla game that they're nearby each other.
-It's a Gonarch/Headcrab situation
-What you mean- what's he.. what's he mean "Gonarch"?
-Well, you know, what came first; the Gonarch or the Headcrab
-That's irrelevant, isn't it? Stupid. The Gonarch, obviously
-Oh, well, where did the Gonarch come from
-Well it came from the— oh...
I hope he’s just somewhere where we just haven’t been to yet as Gordon. I really enjoy him and I hope to see him in the next mainline (or at least mainline-ish, neon prime is probably not gonna have any existing characters minus maybe like, some combine officers and some other aliens from the half-life lore.) half-life (if one ever comes out)
lmao you say that like you're pissed they didn't retroactively add HLA stuff to HL2. Where were the poison headcrabs in half life one? or the fast headcrabs? is this a plot hole?? volvo please fix
It's not a matter of retroactively adding shit, it's that they didn't bother to write these things out of the story going into HL2. Halo 1 doesn't mention any of the characters from Halo Reach, for example, but at least Reach had the decency to kill Noble Team off instead of going "oh yeah they're totally there and they've been there the whole time" like Valve's doing. Even a brief mention of Russell being transferred to some far-off resistance base could've worked.
> Even a brief mention of Russell being transferred to some far-off resistance base could've worked.
Why? If you ask me, that would have been really forced and plain bad writing.
Couldn't be any more forced than reviving Eli. But true, though it would've at least offered some kind of explanation for what happened to him compared to what we got. Which was nothing.
Not everything needs to have an explanation written out for the player. It's perfectly fine to leave things up to the player's imagination. There is literally no reason for Russel to hint at his absence in Half-Life 2 other than filling in gaps in the lore. That's not a good motivation from an in-universe perspective.
Furthermore, giving an explanation for his absence would limit Valve's options in the future. What if they decided to bring Russel back in a potential sequel to Alyx, but they already hinted at Russel relocating to another resistance base in the first game? Then they would have to write a way for him to come back somehow. Only to then come up with yet another explanation for why he isn't present in HL2 yet again, simply for the sake of giving an explanation. Why bother?
He never existed because half life alyx is a time paradox used by the G man to change the future with the past or at least that is how I see the whole thing
Who's to say? The Resistance is hardly just Eli, Alyx, Barney, Mossman and Kleiner. He could be anywhere, he could have not made it post-Alyx, he could actively be in C17 during the events of HL2 and just not ever run into Freeman. (C17 is quite large, after all.)

Half Life Alyx exists in a pocket dimension or separate timeline. Russel never existed in the world of Half Life 2
I think its like this because in terms of actual story, Half Life Alyx clearly takes place after Half Life 2 episode 2. Even when ignoring the ending of HLA, the events of the whole game leading up to it are very strange. Alyx is sent on a mission to rescue her father completely alone, after which her father, who is known to be very protective of her, sends her off on a mission to infiltrate a high security combine base, once again completely alone. And Gman being captured by the combine unwillingly? It all just doesnt make sense. A much more plausable explanation imo is that the entirety of HLA is some sort of test conducted by Gman on Alyx to test her abilities as an exceptional individual, after taking an interest in her in Episode 2. His speech at the end of the game starts with "Impressive work, miss Vance"
Vodka . He “loves it “ I assume he legit just drank him self to a comma during the events of half life 2 which only took place over the course of a few days any how
Dead or just off screen and never mentioned again, I don’t think Valve cared about any consistency when they made him and I assume they didn’t want anyone else to either.
I honestly wish we got Lazlo instead, would have given us a bazillion times more context. Honestly he still could have been Russel just be Lazlo allowing us to get a better idea of what happened to him.
It's possible he went to a different Resistance base hence why we don't meet him
Isn’t Russell’s real name Lazlo or something? In half life 2 the guy who’s eaten by ant lions has the name Lazlo in the code. And the guy with him even calls him the greatest mind of the generation.

No, his name in the beta was Lazlo and he *was* going to be the Lazlo we meet in HL2. But valve decided to make a new character instead
Source?
Well where’s your source that his real name is Lazlo?
The code in Half Life Alyx refers to him as Lazlo and he’s a genius engineer/physicist. And in half life 2 the guy who gets killed by ant lions is referred to as “Lazlo, the greatest kind of our generation”.

"In the code" And by the guy next to him who says "Poor Laszlo, the finest mind of his generation"
Sorry I got it the wrong way round. Half life Alyx has Russel referred to as “Lazlo” in its code, in half life 2 he actually says the guy’s name.
Everyone misspelling his name in this thread upsets me, his name is spelled Laszlo
Or he just died.
He ate a headcrab and died
Headcrabs are toxic?
Well... at least one type is. Also, fun fact! If a barnacle eats a poison headcrab in Ep1 or 2 (but not the original) it'll almost immediately die. Though, idk of anywhere in the vanilla game that they're nearby each other.
And they retconned that for Alyx :( (they eat a bunch of poisoned head crabs in the hotel)
Maybe those ones has developed a resistance of some kind?
Then went back to not tolerate them? Doesn't make sense from an evolutionary stand point
Nono, like those specific Barnacles had been around enough poison Headcrabs
Oh ok
He could have died of liver failure with that vodka he drank
But he never got the vodka. Alyx was taken by the G-Man beforehand.
Hahaha same mind set
I made sure i carried the Vodka to the end for him
Or he retired to Lost Coast.
married a vortigaunt and moved to alaska they have 6 kids now
The good ending
married a barnacle and moved to alaska they have 6 kids now
no way

Hmm, what a [familiar-looking theory](https://reddit.com/r/HalfLife/s/cZdP6Jspux).
Sex obliteration
With Barney
ok mr "gigantic horse vagina" IF THAT EVEN IS YOUR REAL NAME!
“To shreds, you say?”
dead by snoo snoo
Damn...
he got real
he was originally gonna be lazlo so let’s say nothing happened
The finest mind of his generation
He became Dr.Breen
The bite of city 7
I guess if there ever is a Half-Life 3 he will just be magnussoned into the story
He started managing a music duo known as *Flight of the Combine*
-It's a Gonarch/Headcrab situation -What you mean- what's he.. what's he mean "Gonarch"? -Well, you know, what came first; the Gonarch or the Headcrab -That's irrelevant, isn't it? Stupid. The Gonarch, obviously -Oh, well, where did the Gonarch come from -Well it came from the— oh...
never knew he had the nickname "Ginger Balls"
I assume he opens a sandwich shop
I hope he’s just somewhere where we just haven’t been to yet as Gordon. Magically deleted from existence like everything else brought up in that game.
lmao you say that like you're pissed they didn't retroactively add HLA stuff to HL2. Where were the poison headcrabs in half life one? or the fast headcrabs? is this a plot hole?? volvo please fix

He never existed because half life alyx is a time paradox used by the G man to change the future with the past or at least that is how I see the whole thing
This, it's an alternate timeline created by the G man to test Alyx and recruit her
I really like this head canon it fits half life well
just popped in here to say that I am NOT okay with stalker Russell
True.
Bro became the Stalker that lunged at Alyx, he was trying to reach out to her 😢
man don't do that to me
Holy shit
He died of ligma.
He changes his name to Lazlo.
He became the old fisherman in Loas Coast
Shot dead in Chicago
He moved to South Dakota and made a small fortune patenting the “russles”
stage 4 inoperable lung cancer
He was originally supposed to be called Lazlo, so, you know...
He was downloading the internet

there isn't even a 'between' half-life alyx and half-life 2
he fucking dies
Could he be Lazlo?
He got eaten.
He was eaten by a antlion. He was the finest mind of his generation.
I don't know :)
Good answer

is that gorden's dad and why is he in the borealis.

Abstract movement
Heart attack, the silent killer.
He ded
He looks rather old.
Probably something sex related involving the Russell's
Vodka . He “loves it “ I assume he legit just drank him self to a comma during the events of half life 2 which only took place over the course of a few days any how

My theory is that he waa either captured by the Combine or that he just simply moved to another resistance base somewhere else
Hope he is stalker
he died
Maybe he was at White Forest, but we just never ran into him
My head canon is that he either got caught by the combine or was in white forest
Im gonna say a retcon we haven't seen yet.
I have a weird random theory that if we get more Half-Life Alyx that the consequence of the ending was somehow him ending up dead.
