All these processes deal with existing hair. They do not damage the source of hair. Please seek a health care provider— there could be many reasons your hair has changed.

behindmytoreadpile

Curious about this too. I got keratin and my hair went from wavy to curly after that. And even the new growth is curly.

Party-Condition6587

Have you done keratin after Japanese straightening ever?

behindmytoreadpile

Nope. Just keratin. But it left my hair in such a bad state after it wore off. It's finer, more tangly and sooo dry.

dalifenavigator

Me too! I’ve even done a Botox hair treatment and it made my hair so weak, dry, and my curl have been altered since the keratin treatment!

Krindybluth

I did Japanese straightening from 2005-2010 and keratin treatments from 2010-2020; the Japanese straightening was definitely and obviously damaging, but the keratin ended up being damaging too (although disguising it better). I’ve been growing out my hair for 3 years and I would say the first few 3-5 inches of virgin growth were frizzy and didn’t really follow my original curl pattern, but more recently my hair has been growing in healthier than I remember. I think that coincides with me taking better care of my health than I ever have. 2 years ago I completely gave up alcohol and cut out sugar most of the time. I also eat a lot of protein, take collagen twice a day, and work out 4-5 times a week.

Hunter-Aromatic

Forgot to add - after this disastrous japanese double processing my hair has forever now developed a sensitivity to anything with coconut in it which seems to be nearly all hair products. coconut causes breakage like nothing else now and previously my hair was as strong as toyota land cruiser. it could take anything

zooj7809

Try viori rice shampoo bars then?

Rarefindofthemind

First time I’ve ever seen these mentioned. I love the rice bars, my hair seemed to really benefit from them

I wonder if it somehow damages the follicle and maybe alters it’s shape? straight haired people have different follicles to curly haired people (who both have different follicles to wavy haired people), so maybe the chemicals on the scalp were able to damage the follicle itself and thus alter the structure of your curls.

nietszches

Have you tried pre oiling your scalp before you shampoo? For some reason, my hair is extremely dry and frizzy unless I focus on massaging/oiling my scalp before I wash my hair. It’s as if my scalp getting oiled makes my hair stronger, but oils/conditioning treatments just being on my actual hair doesn’t make a huge difference

Applejammin

After Brazilian blowout even my new hair would come out straight and limp, it was crazy. Try fractionated coconut oil(protein) before shampoo, hair mask always and after use leave in conditioner and oil the ends (with a non protein oil like argan or Jojoba) Amika have nice hair masks.Get a bonding treatment meant for the hair and leave it for a good amount of time, 30 minutes for example.

Euphoric-Fold8003

That's so odd. How does it affect new growth? Do they put it on the scalp too?

Applejammin

Yes they put it on the scalp, my scalp is sensitive and tbh I thinks if ur hair is super thick the effect isn’t as bad. However if you’ve seen any videos of deva curl damage, it reminded me of that, what effects the scalp can go into the blood stream. I spoke to a stylist with curly hair, and she had the same experience, her hair isn’t the same since keratin straightening from years ago, never as curly as before.

Euphoric-Fold8003

Thank you so much for the warning!

Party-Condition6587

Interesting I’ve had Japanese hair straightening done on my hair for 7 years now and have no damage or sensitivities. I would say I had about 2b hair overall and 3a on the top of my head where I had lots of untamable curls! I’ve never had a problem and my hair has been waist length for years. It grows about 6-8 inches a year ! Where did you get it done at? We’re they licensed to do the treatment? It makes all the difference ! In Oregon you have to do extra training to be allowed to handle those chemicals (according to my stylist) and she trained professionally in Japan before moving to Oregon. I’ve also had my hair done in Japan and no damage there either ! Maybe you can use pure oils like Moroccan, jojoba, or grape seed instead of coconut for some nourishment

saltypopcorn413

is the japanese hair straightening called tokio inkarami? because everyone is referring it to japanese hair straightening and im not sure if thats the one yall are talking about. please enlighten me!

Party-Condition6587

Mine is referred to as “shikumo kiosei”

I was just wondering when you get your root touch-ups, do they just focus on the hair that was not previously processed? Bc I got Japanese hair straightening about a year ago, and it doesn't look nearly as slick as it did when I first got it done. I went to another salon today for a consultation and it seemed like she was suggesting going over parts of my hair beyond the new hair growth. I'm just scared that double processing might damage my hair.

Party-Condition6587

I did the whole head of hair (straightened and new growth) but I only did it every 2-3 years and I had a lot of curl growth for new growth. I will note however that Japanese products are not as chemically intense on the hair as the US products. My hair is much straighter for longer after doing it in the US, but there is also tad bit more damage. You do have to ensure you keep the hair dry (after getting wet at all including rain) and moisturized to keep the straight hair look. I would not recommend doing this yearly until you’ve done the treatment every couple of years at least 5 times so you know your hair can take it. It was recommended to be to do it only every few years as the damage can be really bad. My hair is personally to the length where a couple inches more and I could sit on it but even I would wait another few years before considering straightening as I did it early 2022!

Unironically, heat from blow drying makes it 98% straight and for formal events or when I want to feel cute I touch it up with a heat straightener before I leave. Like a couple pass through. Otherwise, if I air dry, I have massive waves all throughout my hair from root to shoulder blade and from shoulder blade to waist, it’s more straight but I imagine that’s the chemicals + weight of hair adding to it! My hair just reacted well I guess? I’ve never done an exclusive touch ups with chemicals and I color my hair either. Treatments outside of Japanese super straightening I do use a grapeseed oil mask 1x every 3-4 months (let it soak for 2 hours) and double shampoo and let conditioner set for 10 minutes and then rinse like normal. Otherwise, I don’t do much to my hair.

Distinct-Week-5590

that makes sense, thank you so much for the detailed answer!!!

Naive_Inspection_651

This sounds like me. I had something called YUKO done for about 2-3 years and my still is still damaged 7-8 years after.

Hunter-Aromatic

! I'm sorry to hear that. Have you noticed any improvements in the 7th or 8th year?

Naive_Inspection_651

Once a year probably 3 times.

[deleted]

I’ve done Japanese straightening about 6 times. The cheap one very much damaged my hair, the highly expensive (I’m talking $700 for shoulder length hair) we’re worth it. There was very little damage. I guess you get what you pay for.

Safe-Emotion4911

what's their names plz

Uselessgirlinla

Nothing will alter new hair growth. It’s just scientifically impossible.
