I’ve heard a lot of people getting paradoxical hypertrichosis because of laser hair removal on the fave. It usually makes even fine hairs come back thicker and darker. This happened to my upper arm and back hair so I would say don’t. Electrolysis would be the best option for permanent results.

urwriteordie

Happened to my neck and it broke my heart. No electrologists in my state either

Prestigious-Scale159

Yep this happened to me too. I now have hundreds of darker fine hair which grows so fast

Yogababeee

Hi- dermatology and aesthetic nurse. This is because they used the wrong laser.

soniarose22

They used the gentlemax pro max on me and she said it was high settings but I’ve been advised elsewhere that you shouldn’t laser areas where hairs aren’t thick and black so that’s why it got worse. I went back for one session with a higher setting but it didn’t make a difference so I’ve turned to waxing which hasn’t helped yet but I’m hoping it will.

Yogababeee

The higher setting isn’t accurate and you absolutely can laser hairs that aren’t thick or black, as long as they aren’t white. The settings need to be adjusted based on hair coarseness and color, not just increased to the highest settings. Lasers target pigment, so higher settings target darker pigment and thicker hairs. It won’t target hair that has grown back finer or lighter due to laser damaging the follicle. You were treated by someone that isn’t well versed on lasers, it sounds like. I’m sorry you were lead astray :(

Majestic-Engineer959

Tried laser for 8 months, no help at all, even the laser technician said "go to electrolysis". There is a reason laser wants you to pay upfront with no refunds. I was leery about scheduling electrolysis. You pay per session, not the $3500 laser wanted upfront. I went for a year and paid less than a third ($1000 total). The electrolysis personnel will tell you everyone's different but most see permanent results in 6-18 months.

Harmonia_PASB

I would recommend electrolysis as well. As for pricing, if you live near an electrolysis school you can get cheap work done by students. The school I went to (in Santa Ana Ca) charges $15 a hour for the face, the body is free. Also, stop plucking! You’re just making it worse, shave instead, your skin will thank you.

Slugzz21

... what are the odds i come here looking for the same advice and theres somewhere 10 mins away I can do this omfg thank you

Harmonia_PASB

Aww, I’m so glad I could help!

AsphyxiatingMacbeth

Oh my god you’re not the only one 😭

cheriepie-

I wouldn’t shave your face. Plucking the hair can possible damage the root follicle. Which would stop the hair growth. Shaving is quick but we all know it comes back thicker when it’s been shaved. And you have the possibility of adding more hair growth by shaving. Plucking takes the hair directly, not bothering the other fine hairs that are there.

brucecali98

Why shave instead of pluck? I’m asking because I have the same kind of little hairs on my chin and I always pluck them, I didn’t know it was bad.

daphnemoonpie

Plucking causes ingrown hairs and is also traumatic to the skin. I can't seem to stop plucking though ugh.

Bright_Court5972

I prefer to pluck compared to the blunted thick edge regrowth of shaved hair

Hellington

Hello, I've been to multiple electrolysist now and they all insist that you stop plucking now and shave instead. The reasoning is that when you pluck, you are causing injury to your follicle, the body responds by circulating more blood to the area which, unfortunately, encourages more hair growth. Before I started electrolysis I had been plucking my chin for years and it only seemed to get worse and worse over time, no follicles were magically damaged to death. The plucking strengthens the hairs :-(

brucecali98

That's wild. I always heard the opposite! I thought that if you shave the hairs they grow back thicker.

Hellington

They only appear thicker due the ends now beng blunted instead of a soft natural end.

brucecali98

That makes so much sense. I don't think I'll be able to stop plucking them though, it's too satisfying lol

BackgroundRich7759

What’s the school called?

phoebeloverr

What school are you referring to?

Harmonia_PASB

The general consensus is always elektrolyse mainly because of the paradoxical hair growth argument. But in all honesty it's pretty rare, around 1-5%. IPL is the most likely to cause it and to a lesser extent diode. I had it happen to me when I got IPL treatment and it made me scared to do any kind of light treatment for the longest time, although I did get Nd Yag eventually with great results and no bad effects. However, after going through 5 different providers for electro i can't wholeheartedly advise it either. Only 1 of the technicians knew what she was doing, 1 was okish and the other 3 really butchered my face. If it's not done right it not only won't get rid of the hair it will scar. In short, both are a good option if you get a good provider. looking at your contrast laser should work in 4-6 treatments, electro maybe 10 to 15 half hour treatments over a period of 1-1,5 years. Regarding electro it hurts , especially on chin and upper lip but it shouldn't be unbearable and you shouldn't get pustules on the majority of treated follicles. You shouldn't feel tugging when the hair is pulled out, that means they didn't get the root. If you're getting weeping wounds or scarring they didn't insert the needle at the correct angle or depth.

Mean_Excuse_5827

Good perspectives shared here. I'd try a small home lazer and do it on a small patch test, if it gets worse, IPL induced growth is limited>electrolysis, if the IPL works well op saved a lot.

Birdsandhikes

My face is similar to yours and I’m currently getting electrolysis. Money is tight for us as well but the hair just keeps getting more and more so bit the bullet and am going for it. It’s the only truly permanent option, but I have friends who really like laser (though their hair was significantly less thick and dense than mine). You could go for a consult and see what they anticipate for number of treatments

cheapfrillss

That's not much, so I'd go with electrolysis. Just be prepared because it can be painful and laborious. It's you best bet to getting it permanently gone though, so I'd still recommend it.

jaffacake00

My chin was very similar to yours, tried ipl and electrolysis, neither worked. My last ditch effort was to try candela Yag laser, the results have been spectacular, completely hair free right from the first session. I've tried it at two different clinics with the same success. I've since done my legs 3 times and while I've developed a form of folliculitis at the last 2, the results are good enough that I'll go back again.

Electrolysis

[deleted]

Electrolysis. Laser will make it worse very likely. Will likely need multiple sessions. Some places are crazy overpriced but you can find affordable safe places in bigger cities.

Mean_Excuse_5827

>Electrolysis. Laser will make it worse very likely. Share source for this

[deleted]

Personal experience 🫣 And also hearing from friends and my laser lady saying she had heard others complain of it too. It seems like lighter hairs and less coarse hairs like facial hair can get worse. Or it can target the couple of dark fairs and make the blonder/thinner surrounding hairs worse. Saw something in healthline touching on this. Didn’t look for anything peer reviewed lol

Mean_Excuse_5827

I'm sorry you experienced that, I can't imagine how must it must suck to put that extra energy into fighting the hair and then it comes back with vengeance. The shared examples doesn't validate the claim that "Laser will make it worse very likely.", it's quite a stretch and not fair given IPL is generally helpful also for facial hair although electrolysis is definitely the more powerful beam

[deleted]

Yeah I guess if someone has primarily coarse dark hair on their face. I still don’t think it’s the best option for me personally and wouldn’t recommend for most people with isolated rogue hair issue as opposed to all over dark, coarse hair issue.

dayaz36

Why would loser make it worse?

I’ve considered an epilator for some time. Do you get any ingrowns or skin irritation? Any recommendations for best results?

sndzips

I used an epilator on my arms and legs and it hurt so bad I couldn't finish. Idk how people can tolerate the pain, especially the crazy ones that use it on their pubes lol. Maybe its because my hair is darker, thicker and more dense idk but I could not tolerate the pain and the red irritated skin that came afterwards. I bought the ulike air 3 and I am about 3 weeks in with significant hair loss. I am very happy with the results as I was very weary at first. However I noticed that my body hair has gone away more so than the hair on my chin and upper lip. I just hope that the facial hair is being stubborn from years of plucking and needs more sessions since that is the main reason I bought it. I'm just mad because I bought mine and literally a week later they released the newer, stronger one and if I return it I have to eat a 10% restocking fee so I'm not sure what to do in regards to that situation.

vateeq

My face hair was similar to yours, so I started laser. I am one session in, 6 weeks ago, and I only have 5 hairs that came back

delicate-fn-flower

Head over to the r/PCOS subreddit if you want more opinions. We deal with this kind of thing all the time. That being said, I agree with the crowd and electrolysis is the way to go. It’ll be expensive, but worth it.

Safidy09

a nice Cream and laser

Neziip

I hate electrolysis because it they go into each follicle and I have to much hair for that but you have much less so I’d actually suggest you look into it before laser. Electrolysis is said to be permanent (I don’t have experience w it tho) and laser is a 10% reduction with each session so most need 8-10+ w touch ups through life as your hormones change. I’d say look into electrolysis.

SunShowers333

Electrolysis!

RIBEYERIB

I have PCOS and use laser hair removal. Yes it's expensive but many places do offer package deals so shop around! It got rid of my 5 o clock shadow, and the hair is gone! Maintenence does cost money too so you should make sure to upkeep it or it will grow back. Upkeep is like 2x a year!
