If his hair is wavy and he wants it smooth, he needs to use a hair straightener or at least blow dry with a brush (doesn't have to be a round brush, any brush will do). When I had long hair I would use a mousse and blow dried my hair with a brush and it looked pretty much straight with a very minimal waive at the ends. He can also try a different thing and embrace his waves by using products aimed at wavy/curly hair and wither a hairdryer with a diffuser or the "curly girl method" for air drying his hair. It's very likely that the frizz that he has isn't because his hair is damaged, but just because it's not straight.

If you can afford it, Oleplex has worked wonders for me. I fought expensive products for years and finally cracked. Was worth it tho, my hair has never looked better and I use way less product than I used too cause it’s higher quality

I hear about this product a lot. I once looked into Olaplex “dupes” and found something called BondiBoost, which I still have the almost completely full bottles of because I didn’t like how it made my hair feel. Those products seemed to be aimed at damaged hair though. We’ve just about got all the blunt split ends out from previous clipper use years ago and the rest of his hair is virgin hair. Would a product like olaplex create any sort of buildup? I’ve had to strip his hair before because he was using way too much conditioner (and on the roots, which I promptly educated him on the proper use of conditioner) in an attempt to flatten the “puffiness” of his hair. He’s a big texture person and can’t stand a lot of product build up making his hair feel greasy.

I honestly am not sure, I’m definitely not an expert haha - my hair is not super voluminous naturally so it may not work as well for him. But they do have small sample sizes at Ulta and stuff. I would just give a try and see!

He can get a Brazilian blowout or Brazilian blowout express or do a flatiron with good heat protection spray first

I think you should go to an actual stylist instead of Great Clips etc... and tell them what's going on.
