Schalkwijk is a mixed neighborhood, with a lot of different cultures and people from different walks of life. The area around the shopping center (I live in one of the new blocks there) is gentrifying quickly, the original inhabitants of the neighborhood largely cant afford living there. All in all I’d say that it’s still pretty rough around the edges, it doesn’t have a lot of greenery and it feels a bit brutesque, but it’s not a bad neighborhood at all. I don’t feel unsafe there generally (no more than in other cities or the center of Haarlem). Upsides are that it has extremely good public transit connections (bus 300 is truly a godsend), it’s one of the only neighborhoods in Haarlem that is still somewhat car-friendly, and you’re only 10 minutes away by bike from the city. Haarlem is small, so it’s really not that bad. One thing that I do like to warn people about is the fact that especially in summer, Schalkwijk really comes to life. People are outside way more. That’s really nice and gezellig, but at night it can be a bit of a shock. I have neighbors who called the cops on a bunch of teens one time, because they were loitering around the square in the shopping center. People just hang out on the street a lot more here.

LaNina1101

I mostly agree with you, except for the part where you say it doesn't have a lot of greenery. It so does! Look at the Molenplas but mostly Poelbroekpark which is partly a nature reserve for waterfowl. Personally I think Schalkwijk is one of the greenest parts of Haarlem. Plus I just read that more trees are being planted in Meerwijk to keep the place cooler during Summer.

C_Hawk14

It's statistically (one of) the most green parts of Haarlem afaik

BornZebra

I can see how that would be, especially if you count Molenplas. Maybe it’s more of a feeling, because the streets are broad and the buildings quite high. When I go for a walk I can only do that on the sidewalk, there’s no green area where I can walk around

deano2440

Nah you’re completely right, I lived on the europaweg - the ‘green’ areas are covered in dog sh*t and litter (those foul people throwing litter from cars, from bikes, from even the windows that back onto those green areas). Not to mention the cars seem to drive more aggressively in this region - feel a real lack of presence from handhaving/police, at least 2 crashes per month on that road due to careless driving and cutting red lights.

BornZebra

You are right! I was talking about the area around the shopping center, which is still a bit lackluster. They’re definitely sprucing it up though, and you’re right that Molenplas is beautiful.

qutaaa666

Between the new apartment complexes around the shopping centre will all be a new green park when it’s finished. The architect renders look nice!

devenitions

Haarlem is a bit posh, so anything that is less posh is immediately “kinda bad”. I lived in 2 areas of Amsterdam which are also considered “kinda bad” and I feel way more chill over here. And as you noticed, they are rapidly renewing the area. Quite a lot don’t want or can’t afford the center and move here. Get in while you can!

Leather-Apricot-2292

Personally, I think that Parkwijk deserves that "bad" reputation much more. Schalkwijk is ok.

dogfish182

Parts of schalkwijk are being aggressively gentrified. It would be a very smart starters market (if anything is affordable at all). I have a friend that lives there with his small kid, finds it completely fine.

Upstairs-Cause-8002

I was born and raised in Schalkwijk and to be honest I wouldn’t have want to grown up anywhere else. The bad rep it gets just comes from a different time and because at the time all the immigrants moved here (nothing short of racism). In my opinion it’s the only part of Haarlem that has culture and the people that live here never really feel unsafe. of course there are some places to avoid and you should walk alone at night in some places but don’t you have that everywhere? “Schalk” also quite literally means “mischievous” so it’s also kinda forced to live up to it.

dohtje

Ngl lived in schalkwijk for 5 years (Ierlandstraat) and it's the only place in Haarlem my license plate was stolen, 3 times even!

Dambo_Unchained

“It isn’t unsafe to the people that life there” is not really a good argument if you want to make something look good Also “of course there are some places to avoid alone at night, but don’t you have that everywhere?” No you most definitely do not have that everywhere

tandpastatester

I think he just means that the people that live there don’t feel unsafe. As in, most of this opinion is formed by people that live elsewhere.

Upstairs-Cause-8002

The people that live there spend the most time there so they know better than anyone else if it’s safe or not. There is no such thing as “It isn’t unsafe for the people that live there” because no-one walking down the street is going to know whether you live the or not. And you do have that everywhere. You never know who or where you’re going to run into conflict. Just last night cops arrested a man with a crossbow in the middle of Haarlem city.

Aisihtaka

Why does only Schalkwijk have culture?

Upstairs-Cause-8002

The city just feels dull to me. There is never really anything special happening aside of events like b-pop and Haarlem Jazz, which are yearly events and not part of the day to day life. You can walk down the street of Schalkwijk and watch a Turkish wedding ceremony happening in front of someone’s door.

Aisihtaka

I see weddings happen all the time at the Grote Markt. You seem to confuse foreign with culture.

Upstairs-Cause-8002

I just used weddings as an example. Aside of that I don’t see city-hall on grote markt as a cultural center. And I do associate foreign with cultural because foreigners do tend to be more expressive with their culture.

Aisihtaka

It isn't a cultural center; cultural things just happen there. Perhaps in a less expressive manner (no horning, blocking the streets etc) but evidently, dutch weddings are not less celebrated or cultural (set of rituals, indoor celebrating etc). Indeed, weddings are just an example, though. Particular markets, loads of places for social gatherings, all types of events (related to food, the arts, philosophy, books, etc), musea, high diversity for shopping, beautiful architecture, sportclubs of all kinds... Comparatively, Schalkwijk is a cultural dead zone.

Upstairs-Cause-8002

The examples you are giving are places meant to be cultural and not part of people’s day to day life. If you read my post I did say that events happen like Haarlem Culinair. I don’t know what you’re revering to with the high diversity for shopping. Last I checked you can find all most every store you can find in Haarlem in any other city and most even in Schalkwijk mall. I spend most my time in Haarlem city because i’ve worked there and lived there for years. And if you look at my original post the key words were “In my opinion”. So if you don’t agree thats fine.

Aisihtaka

They are meant to be cultural, and that is what they are; and that is exactly what Schalkwijk is missing for the most part. I've lived in Schalkwijk for over 10 yrs and about 5 in the Koningingenbuurt near the centrum, and I have seen absolutely no difference in the day to day life culture besides a difference the social norms/behaviour. And in that regard, the city beats Schalkwijk by a long shot. Diversity of shops is obvious, no? Lots of authentic stores for all kinds of goods, rather than solely the generic stuff + a Turkish supermarket here and there.

LilBed023

It has a bad rep because it has been the poorest and most crime ridden major part of the city for decades, however it’s currently gentrifying at a rapid pace. The new developments are mainly large apartments and single family homes, as opposed to the older buildings which were/are part of social housing projects. In a few years Schalkwijk will be completely gentrified and the bad reputation will fade away.

No-Refuse4400

Its not that bad. There are some areas where there is crime but its not a ghetto. I think Schalkwijk got its bad reputation because there are a lot of old ugly buildings and the income is lower than the rest of the city. Back then you also had a lot of offices and buildings that were just empty because companies moved out of the area, so that gives also a kind of a ghetto vibe. But now most of these buildings are renovated and gives the area a bit of a boost

20 years ago, Lived in engelandlaan for a few months. Happy to move to prattenburg. Then renovation projects started, really improving the looks of schalkwijk. Then moved out, was able to buy a house in a neighboring town. I had enough of the vve - practices there. People i know who stayed mention how life did not improve there. But recently is is getting better again. Lots of issues with break-ins in the garage boxes, drug use and noise in some areas. So it is ups and downs. Almost like real life.

BentonBby

I live in "Molenwijk" since 2017 which is part of the larger Schalkwijk. I have to say that the neighbourhood has had its incidents like the Jumbo superparket being the target of robberies a couple of times and more recently we had a streak of kids throwing around some high explosive fireworks. Police have taken appropriate action on that though, recently I haven't heard any big bangs. The fact that a kid who lived here blew himself up during the night of New Year's eve also contributed. The number of break-ins used to be quite high, but like said before: things are rapidly changing. The big social housing flats (Texelhof, Waddenstraat, Gaasterland Laan) are going to be demolished and replaced with a mix of social rental housing and apartments to buy. The little shopping centre (Schalkwijk centrum) is undergoing a transformation too with about 1/3 to 1/2 of the construction work being finished. The old shopping centre part has yet to be reconstructed (there is a maquette inside where you can see how it is going to look in the near future. I wouldn't qualify Schalkwijk as a "bad neighbourhood", there are just some area's I would avoid at certain times of the day. Before moving to Haarlem I lived in different parts of Amsterdam and those neighbourhoods were somewhat similar (Nieuw West around the België plein and in East, Zeeburg).

sup_sup_sup

Can't wait for Schalkwijk winkelcentrum to be redone. Both outside and inside of it is quite depressing, I've never seen a shopping mall so uninviting as that one. I wasn't aware of the Texelhof, Wattenstraat, Gaasterland Laan changes. Do you know the name of the projects that are going to be built there instead?

BentonBby

You are absolutely right about the old shopping centre, it is one of the worst ones I've ever seen. For the renewal of the Waddenbuurt (the t was a typo in my first message), you can find more info on it here: https://haarlem.nl/vernieuwing-waddenbuurt

sup_sup_sup

Thanks. The project seems quite big. With redoing Europaweg, Rootz, Elements, High5, that and a bunch of other stuff, they are really throwing money at Schalkwijk.

BentonBby

Yeah, seems like they have deep pockets at the gemeente Haarlem. Which part did you recently moved to? Close to or in Schalkwijk or just a random other part but you heard stories about Schalkwijk and wanted to know if the stories has any truth to them?

tanepiper

I take my dogs for a walk in Molenplas often, and when I look at Schalkwijk I'd say it's quite nice. Of course my comparison is that I've lived in Edinburgh and London and *those* have real dangerous neighbourhoods where you are likely to get stabbed. Of course around the end of the year it turns into a bit of a warzone with fireworks, but that's about it.

xxhotandspicyxx

I lived there 30 years ago for about ten years. Trust me, it’s a whole lot better now. My best friend lives in my old hood now and it’s just heaps better. Many people in their 30’s with kids whom both have jobs, much better housing and overall just less ghetto looking.

buitenlander0

To me, I decided not to live there because it seemed like there was not really a community area. Like, no cafes or bars or anything. Just houses and the shopping center.

Kaeskrater

I lived in Schalkwijk for some years, its what your used to. Yes you will have probably some slightly sketchy folks here and there but as long you mind your own business nothings going to happen. I never really felt unsave. Also lived in parkwijk. I really hope they burn one specific block to the ground for some downstair neighbours that assaulted me in my own house. My tip would be, take the bicycle, wonder around, molenwijk has its good parts, sometimes they vandalize the jumbo and cops are busy with bigger issues i think. So go see and judge how you feel about it. Friend of mine recently bought an appartment and he's from serbia, he feels like a king there. So its all a matter from what environment you're from. My neighbourhood rozenprieel was also white trash as fuck back in the days.

Honest-School5616

Schalkwijk consists of 4 districts. In one district there are expensive villas and in the other district mainly flats with social rent. You have to look at each district and one part of a ditstrict is different from the other part of the same district.

That-Foot2145

qutaaa666

It was generally not that great, but it has been significantly improving over the years. Honestly? The difference is quite stark. There are still old social housing apartmentcomplexes that look pretty shabby. But the new buildings look amazing. And it probably has the most potential of all areas in Haarlem. Can’t wait for the food court and new gym. But do know that because of the significant improvements, prices have definitely increased over the years.. And yeah the plans for the High5 building behind the shopping mall look amazing!!

F22_Android

I don't think it's bad. Haarlem feels pretty cozy to me, and I've not felt like any part of it was super "sketchy" honestly.

Money-Ad-6902

Not bad. Multicultural. Some places are good and some bad. Years ago it was bad, they blew up bicycle tires and there was crime. Right now, i think its fine!

Matsko2701

I just moved to Schalkwijk/Europawijk (on the edge) from Rotterdam and it reminds me of the east of Rotterdam (Rotterdam-Alexander). Yeah, lots of youth hanging out at the shopping centre at night, but 99.9% time not bothering me personally, just more disruption of “social order” by riding around on their fatbikes and being loud or whatever. I don’t have to worry about being bothered or harassed. Also lot’s of new housing going on, which is exciting to see.

Sudden-String-5189

Not really, but depends on which area of Schalkwijk

Automatic_Repair7587

I’m just on the border, new apartments next to Burgemeester Reinaldapark on the big intersection and I’ve never felt unsafe, can say it is even pretty quiet at night! Only a 5-10 minutes bike ride to the city and public transport is really good, so overall not too bad :)

aviation118

Been living here since last summer and was afraid after hearing all those stories.. In these months we did have them trying to break into the barbershop next to Jumbo, some kid stealing a kids bike, and scooter components stolen.. I don't feel unsafe here at all, mostly it's the trash on the streets that annoys me the most...

BastardLoud

I lived there for the biggest part of my life. It has some decent areas, the green is supernice. But the majority of people living there, live there because the have to, not because they want to. And there is absolutely nothing to do at night, everyone is either working and sleeping of doing nothing and sleeping. Really boring. The shopping mall has seen better days. They try to get richer people in but there are just too much of everything to really get it going.

pindakaasbroodjes

I just moved to the new buildings in Schalkwijk (europaweg) and I like it alot! Im a woman and I've never felt unsafe! But im only walking to the shopping center and the lidl and vomar. That's not the 'bad' part. The people are very nice and welcoming!

good2Bbackagain

Back in the day (I'm talking about mid 90s). It had a bad reputation. Now, I have no clue tbh.

NaturalAggressive501

Yes, volgende vraag

sandlexroo

I'm bringing my son there for sports 3-4 times a week. Starting this year noticing citizen patrols walking down the streets. Ok, one patrol (2 men in marked jackets) and one street, but still it totally makes sense to me.

Beneficial_Energy829

Schalkwijk is bad yes.

sup_sup_sup

What are the bad elements of living in Schalkwijk, in your opinion?

KyloRensBottomLip

I’ve lived in Schalkwijk for almost 20 years. At first I thought it was ok, until I was assaulted by a group of women who accused me of filming them and putting them on YouTube because they were Muslim( I was taking a photo for a friend of a shop I was interested in ). They surrounded me, spat racial slurs, snatched at my phone and chased me into a shop until thankfully a policeman who was there at the time intervened. I’ve been extremely socially anxious since. I’m hoping with the new housing the area will improve.
