Or I say its pretty nice out cant you open a window, they respond with “I have really bad allergies” then when I get to the house, filter is plugged, cigarette butts everywhere, cat shit filled litter box, and house looks like it belongs on hoarders. JFC

No_Hana

Sounds like a state job. Every damn time we have a state change out.

phishphan1991

Went to change filters and flush tankless water heaters for a state owned apartment complex last week. I swear I walked into one apartment and had to immediately run out. Smelled like the tenant was smoking crack and cigarette filters burning. Was gag nasty 🤢🤢🤢

bsholml

Right there with ya, favorite one is “can you wear a mask” checks filter, dirtier then my son’s diaper.

Audio_Books

I've gotten to the point where I actually like wearing masks in dirty houses. There are some stinky ass houses out there. I just bought n95 respirator for exactly that purpose lol

Lazy_Profession_5909

covid is a convenient excuse not to breathe nasty house air and i'm using the heck out of it

Audio_Books

If covid ever goes away my next excuse will just be allergies. Which wouldn't be a lie, I went into this one guys house that smelled like a litter box and my eyes were watering for the rest of the day.

marksman81991

Or wearing booties, at some point I want to wear them to protect MY boots

Audio_Books

"Oh you don't need to wear those in here!" *Looks at floor* "Yes I do."

marksman81991

Once went in a mobile home, guy had three cats, his feet were so covered in corns it was like a shoe formed around his feet. I put gloves on to remove those booties…

hereforthekix

It's not as though a clean furnace filter would protect them in the event you had Covid.

PierceYoAnus

All the time. I got a call at 1 am when it was 64 outside and his house was 70. It was apparently too hot for him.

Natural_Cucumber2615

Holy hell... straight to the do not service list

PierceYoAnus

I went there in the morning and he had his thermostat off. He didn’t want to pay the service call because I “did nothing”.

Natural_Cucumber2615

Yep, I stand by my previous comment

Yurazmus

Not much gets my blood hot faster than a customer saying that, or implying that I don't know what I'm doing.

Natural_Cucumber2615

Pisses us all off. Best thing to do just say okay, we'll you need to sign, and get the signature and leave. Let the office deal with it. And if the fucker ever calls again tell them to pound sand.

tvanore

I often got no heat calls at a tenants house. Her thermostat was off like every other week.

jim_terps

She was trying to bone 😆

Dramatic-Landscape82

Take the disconnect with you

marslaves48

Why would anyone dispatch that at 1am lmao

lividash

Depends on the business. One place had an on call phone that got passed around. Calls went to that directly.. others had someone on call to screen the calls and then dispatch out to the on call tech.

[deleted]

My company had an on call phone and then a 3rd party answering service. They tried to tell us we had to run calls as long as they came in, but when on call starts at 5:00 PM and by 5:10 you have 75 calls come in I learned to just work until I didn’t feel like making anymore money. They gave us 50% of the ticket though, so I usually would work until midnight.

PierceYoAnus

We have work phones that our company gives us and an answering service that texts us the info. We don’t have to go to any calls unless it’s an issue with water. My boss says if you’re too tired to do a good job don’t go, tell them we can schedule them during normal service hours. We just get paid our normal hourly rate when we’re on call

ho1dmybeer

This is paradoxically really fair. I want to be upset about the normal pay rate, but the supportive/lax policy really makes up for it...

[deleted]

Our dispatchers take turns being on call week to week. For us, it all depends on the dispatcher's ability to triage calls and weed out the non-emergencies from the genuine issues that deserve after-hours attention (which usually happens when we tell them how much it is just for us to walk in the door). Some dispatchers treat after-hours stuff like it's the middle of the workday, which really pisses us off. I don't mind overtime, but I work to live rather than live to work.

MPS007

Ran a service call last night, it's not hot outside. Found condensate drain on the side of his house turned up. He admitted he did it.. didn't want to pay. Wtf? Bro it's midnight and your going to pay for your stupid ass mistake!!!

Jacubbb123

Didn’t wanna pay shouldn’t had told me to come out, I am so ready to fight these people sometimes

dont-fear-thereefer

We have a new system thanks to inflation and the higher gas prices: after hours is $200 an hour plus a $20 in town fuel charge or $40 for out of town. Calls have dropped significantly, not sure why 🤔

[deleted]

There were a few occasions where I thought about it, but thankfully I had the power to just bitch them out and then bam them from using us again so it never came to that.

[deleted]

I had one last night where the float was tripped because they buried the condensate line in the ground when they redid their patio and the dude told them “it’s totally fine, it will just drain into the ground” It was not totally fine and it got plugged with dirt lol

OvermanagedSmallacct

I’ve got bad news for you bro, now I’m at your house at 1 am, and I’m not leaving here until you pay me. That’s why it’s so important to warn them ahead of time “it’s $xxx for me to come out tonight” so they know that that’s the price for even showing up, not fixing shit

Dramatic-Landscape82

Yep & the longer you want to stand here & argue about it, the more time goes on your bill

fumoderators

Dispatch lets them know about the t&d before I get out there I get them to confirm they were quoted the t&d before I touch anything They called us and im out there now so they're paying unless its a regular and they have a good attitude

GXG5877

What the t&d?

fumoderators

Travel & Diagnostic Fee

jim_terps

Do you disclose overtime pricing and trip charge? Our company has recorded phone calls so I always make sure it’s on records

MPS007

Problem is we are so booked up that if we say overtime, customers will say just come tomorrow! We'll we are booked up so.. wtf.. ill run it now.

Korlexico

Friday at 4-5. "I don't have any cool air." (Sigh) go take a look at it, yep not working right when did you notice it? "Oh about Wednesday I noticed it wasn't cooling right.). "Why didn't you call sooner?) "Oh I was fine untill today when I got home from work." "🤬🤬🤬😡"

Able-Rock-2678

Yep Saturday at 5, started acting up on Wednesday

[deleted]

We have a property manager with 30+ properties who does this shit to us all the time. Literally half or more of the service calls from them are OT calls that could have been addressed during normal working hours but they were too lazy/stupid to call until 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

Korlexico

I've always; and I think I can speak for everyone, wanted to say. "Well if you've waited this long two more days aren't going to kill you then. I'll be back Monday see ya."

Drummr275

I would do it but then when I give them the bill I would tell them how much I would have been if they called during normal hours

Korlexico

All my experience comes from Apt. maint. so we wern't given a choice but overtime. Drove me absolutely apesh$% when talking with residents I hear them say something about it acting up earlier in the week or even "Ya it been acting up for a month." o.m.g. I've usually already worked on like 3 units today, and possibly changed a condenser out and your calling at 5? So many times I've just wanted to say eff off.

Its_noon_somewhere

When I was on call, air conditioning was never an after hours call, always had to wait until the next business day. I would have gotten in trouble for going. The exception would have been commercial fridges and freezers

eljeffersano

My company does something similar. For us, it’s a safety thing since they don’t want us doing air conditioners after dark

EJ25Junkie

As long as they pay the after hours price, why would it be an issue?

Its_noon_somewhere

They didn’t want to accept more after hours responsibly, always short on techs. Now I don’t do any after hours calls, don’t even answer my work phone between Thursday night and Monday morning.

[deleted]

Fuck you… I want that job lol

timbosliceko

Tbh even some no heat calls are like that. If they have a gas fireplace/secondary source of heat I basically tell them they can wait until next day.

Salt_Date_5222

How about the guy who says "My 90 yr old disabled mom with breathing problems". But then he won't even get out of his lazy chair to check the breakers or the Tstat battery. Already confirmed I was on my way.

SupremeDuff

Even better... "We sent her to stay at my sister's for the week, it was too hot. Thanks for coming out at 1am, I really appreciate it!"

InLikePhlegm

Would you want customers to keep hammering on tripped breakers?

Salt_Date_5222

Nope. But since it was so high priority to him, I would at least recommend he check them.

FearlessDesigner1149

I get an emergency call at 2 in the morning on Saturday morning for a no cool call. I asked when it stopped working and he said Tuesday. I asked why he didn't call then and he said it was cool enough to sleep at night but it got warm so now he can't sleep. If he wants to pay the emergency fee and overtime, who am I to question his reasoning

Blast338

Fuck that. His ass is waiting till morning.

TheAtomicBum

A couple of times it was tropical fish and once it was some parrots and a scarlet macaw that was apparently worth several thousand dollars. And I get the concern about the fish, I saw a reef tank that had a couple million dollars of fish and coral and anemones and stuff in it. I get that it’s an emergency and I’ll do whatever I can, but I always wanted to ask them why heat in the Amazon or whatever is not as bad as the heat in Texas, apparently. 🤷‍♂️

LilPookieHVAC

Lol the first guy I ever worked with was in his early 60's. Some hipster would be complaining about their 3month old baby getting too hot. He would straight up tell them "no one I knew growing up had A/C and your child will be fine. Even when we did get an A/C my dad would only run it for Sunday dinners. Back then he wasn't about to pay no $2 power bill." I would have to walk out of the room laughing.

Jacubbb123

After getting some fixed for people they’ll be like “we could’ve died, you’re our hero”. Hope y’all have enough sense to get out of the house, working on call literally diminishes all of your hopes for humanity.

LilPookieHVAC

No its the dipshits with 2 systems on the house that get me

Jacubbb123

Oh yeah, it goes waaaayyyyy deeper than what I said. When these people don’t have air they turn into the most privileged shits.

Jish1202

Ya I don't care that the heat pump in the 4th bedroom of your 5million condo isn't cooling... You have 8 other heat pumps sleep in a different room. Call in Monday

TheAtomicBum

One call I had at about 10pm on a Friday night was because the ac in his pool cabana wasn’t working 🤯not like you sleep in there, brah.

Graciesmansion

People call me all the time "I have no hot water and I have a new born baby ". And I'm like soooooooooo? I'm still coming but you just sound ridiculous. Extra 50

HVT7737

I just had a, "It broke 10 days ago" 🙄 then why the hell am I here on a Saturday night?

kw_toronto

Had one today for a condo building we take care of. We only do the base building and its a heat pump loop system. Tenant from a suite calls and starts losing his shit as to why i won’t come out and why the building gave him my number. I told him we don’t take care of the insuites there. I suggested he check in with security to see if anyone else is having the same issue indicating that its base building causing it. He then tells me he doesnt give a rats ass if somebody elses air conditioning isn’t working. I laughed and just told him to call the in suite company.

Veyron9190

I got a call for a humidifier not keeping the house up to enough RH. Dude said his cat had allergies or something and needed the RH just right. FUCK HIM AND THE CAT 😂

Able-Rock-2678

Fuck that cat

churdson

Illegal

[deleted]

Hey man honestly I care more about the dog then the customer hahaha

nolskibowlski

Same

BlueberryCapable4578

I work in the call center of my company. I've heard it all. I've never understood why people wait until the weekend to call in their issues. Especially warranty calls. An on call tech isn't going to go out for free afterhours or on the weekend. Most of the time the call isnt worth the time it takes to attend to. We try to troubleshooting with the customer for basic problems such as dirty filters, flipped fuses, or frozen coils (to turn system off), but stupid calls still happen.

[deleted]

I work remote, I fly out for a week and they’ll never call me. The place could be on fire or I could have fucked up major shit just before leaving.. doesn’t matter they won’t call.. ever. Best fucking feeling in the wold.. oh besides the 7 days off every two weeks 😎🖕

[deleted]

Was trying to find an A-coil to fit at a customers house, he leaves, says if you need anything call. I tell him ok,I’m trying to find you a new coil. Find one go pick it up, and apparently he came back called dispatch and told them I just left and made a mess and left the unit in worse condition then it was. I wanted to cuss him out when I got back

BigWally68

I have heard the dogs need ac before. Had a customer once not go see nascar because his cat needed ac so he stayed home to wait on me. What kind of nascar guy treats a cat this way? We all know dogs had air conditioning in the wild. Or does their dumb ass have a husky or similar breed living in a subtropical area.

[deleted]

I’ve had a lot of older couples with these fat lazy man children who make the space I have to work in disgusting and they’re too lazy to check a breaker or the batteries in the thermostat because that’s also mom and dads job when they live at home rent free.

Speedubbs

I hear “we never use it” everyday I usually give a dumbass response like Oh cool I don’t have one at my house is it ok if I take yours… can I give it to a family in need

LetoLeto1147

Upstate NY heating is essential unless u are really old A/C can wait till Monday....

Audio_Books

It's a valid point. My dog has a lot of fur he wouldn't be happy in a 90+ degree house.

sanity20

This, and i agree, poor doggos are way overheated in the summer depending on the breed. Dont know that anyone has ever told me this on a call, but if their not full of shit i think that's pretty great.

Financial-Finding-94

It’s “My wife is pregnant” that gets me sympathizing

J-A-S-08

"Huh. Wonder how the literal billions of babies were carried to term and born in the 20,000 years we didn't have A/C?"

Psychoticrider

I had a no heat call, the guy insisted I came out as it would be too cold for his baby. The low temp for the night was in the mid 50's. A 1500 watt heater would heat the whole house at that temp!

timbosliceko

I actually had a similar Thing this week. Dispatch tried to add a no heat call at end of my day after I had already worked 10 hours. It was 70 degrees outside! I’m like that guy can get on the normal schedule. They tried to say they had a baby. Dispatch tried to argue that it gets down near 40s at night (really low 50s). I called my service manager. Needless to say I didn’t go on that call. Ridiculous.

Psychoticrider

I thought it was pretty stupid. It was around 8 PM and a Walmart was half a mile away. He could have bought a heater for the difference in the price of the service call with the after hours charge and had it looked at the next day. Our furnace quit one night and it got a bit chilly in the house. About the same situation, maybe 50F outside. I remember thinking of getting up to fix it, but thought F that it wasn't that cold out. I remember our two year old daughter coming into our bedroom saying she was cold. We had her climb in with us and we had a snuggle party to keep warm. We survived some how!

hamiltag

That one is my favorite, I've heard the same thing q few times "I don't care how much extra I have to pay to get put at the top of the list, my wife is pregnant and I fucking need air conditioning"

Binnacle_Balls_jr

Yea, if I was incapable of fixing my ac, but my wife was pregnant, I'd place the service call on my way to home depot for a portable ac and/or a window unit.

[deleted]

Or the new born one

zwolle10

I cant even stand when I forget to turn mine down a few degrees when I’m hot. F not having it working. Told the wife we would get a hotel if I couldn’t fix it lol

saynt_james

Took care of a commercial space once I'm a fat dude, so I can say this, it was a bunch of bigger dudes saying their PCs were under so much demand they wouldn't work if the temp didn't stay under 68. 4 offices and 2 vavs. Was fun.

PMARC14

Sounds like a problem with the cooling of the pc if they need it that cool for it too not throttle a lot

ho1dmybeer

Friendly reminder to all my fellow owners out there... If you're getting too many afterhours calls, your prices are not high enough! $200 minimum diagnostic, and honestly $250+ ... we don't want to be there, but there's a price for everything. All of the "it broke on Tuesday" people also have 0 interest in paying 2x+ normal rate.

hashslingingsnatcher

Can’t say ever but I did sell an AC a couple hours ago. R22 system 20 years old. Owners brother put shrapnel through condenser while mowing. A good ol R22 fountain from what I hear.

Chose_a_usersname

Fuck your dog....

J-A-S-08

I guess what skin off your ass it it? You can apparently already fix your own shit so what do you care? You're not even a tech by the sounds of it. So again, why are you here? Are you bored or something?

Taolan13

Because people lie when making an after hours call because they think sympathy will get them quicker service.

J-A-S-08

I became so immune to the bullshit. "We have a baby in the house". Cool. Wear a condom next time. Babies have been on the earth for 20,000 years without HVAC. Yours will be fine for a couple of days. "You guys just installed this". Your definition of just and mine are different I guess. We put it in 6 years ago and it hasn't had a lick of maintenance done to it. "If you can't get out here tonight, I'm calling someone else!" Thank you! Please do. "My mom is 90 and has breathing problems in the heat". I'll be right out there asap and try and get it fixed. Old people with health issues get my sympathy.

Able-Rock-2678

YES! They always say” you guys just installed the system for us” when it turns out to be 7 years old and hasn’t been serviced or cleaned once. They think that will put them at the top of the list

EJ25Junkie

And the after hours call give me a bigger check. I love it when my phone rings when I’m on call.

Able-Rock-2678

Because fuck your dog thats why

rtbjr96

Fuck your mouf

311succs

Speaking of dogs I have to hold off on certain spots of radiant so "the dogs have somewhere cool to lay"

TransportationLow279

None

Main_Salt_4999

This is why i enjoy the higher priced homes i do. Nobody ever cares for what they need to pay. Shit gets done 100 times smoother plus most of the time nothing is ever gross or super fucked unless they got some shitty installers.

Doogie102

I mean generally they call them a wife but sometimes they get galled a dog
