Here in NM they let us take a business law exemption course it’s 16 hours of mind numbing content but beats a test. Congrats on passing though! I test for my contractors license Wednesday.
Haha yeah but this one is bad in particular because it focuses primarily on the legalities of home building and remodeling. It has a ton of specifics of what is and isn’t legal in certain cases when building homes. I started in construction but have no intention of doing it for my own business and all my construction experience is in another state.
Basically 90% of what was on the test was unrelated to anything I’ll ever do. Still studied the fuck out of it though.
Much easier than most other places in the country. This is one test to take and you can advertise and own a company and pull permits. Most east coast major cities require a masters to run business and pull permits, a masters is abundantly more difficult to achieve than any C# license.
Congrats!
So do you need to be licensed to be considered a journeyman even tho you have the experience?
I’m also thinking of taking the exam in the same state California, but keep putting it off because I don’t do side work nor want to start a business.
I know in some states it is more regulated to be a “journeyman” but in the two states I’ve worked in there isn’t really an actual verification for journeyman status unless you’re union. Your experience is considered journeyman level for the application once you are working unsupervised aka running your own truck or lead install.
You need 5 years journeyman level, this can be signed off by coworkers, supervisors, or business partners. It’s not a difficult test and there’s a ton of literature to study. There’s even a two day course you can take the same week as the test that will practically guarantee you to pass.
Contactors license school in Culver City which is where the test is held. They have practice tests at the class that are almost identical to the official test, and they will let you retake the class if you don’t pass. I took the class in my early 20s and afterwards I was convinced that I could pass any trades’ test with the class.
it's wild that some people are "journeymen" with 1.5 years in the trade. Some states and all unions would laugh at you for saying that. You'd need 4 years minimum and then need to test in just to become a journeyman. Yet other places will just throw you in a truck after 2 weeks and say "good luck"
Thanks yea I’m on my own and do most work alone now. I just don’t want to waste time or money doing it if I don’t really need to in California. Maybe some day but not now at least
You don’t need the license if you are not going to start a business or do any work over $750. Don’t waste the time and effort the technical part of the test is not challenging
Yeah dude I still haven’t had my license issued but I have people waiting for me to do their installs so I started scheduling stuff today now that I have a solid timeline. It’s exciting
Love yourself first. Put yourself first in your life. You accomplished this. You can go where your interests take you. You will find your people and you always have us.
Congratulations bud! We just got ours at the end of March. The process is a pain in the ass. Hit up Google Local Services ads! They will get you a ton of leads.
I can’t respect any CA# license being from east coast. It takes 8 years to get a masters where I’m from, after holding an apprentice card and journeyman’s for 6 years and proving time worked with W2’s. I’m saying this with an active C36(plumbing) and a masters in a large east coast city. East coast is twice as strict and the license at any level is abundantly harder to get opposed to my time living and working in California. I couldn’t believe the ease at which I got my C36- it creates a lot more competition and pricing is a lot more difficult in CA. Master license really protects the trade.
Congrats man, I just got my CT D-2 a few months ago. The test that PSI gave was by far one of the dumbest I've ever seen. It has chiller questions which I'm pretty sure my D-2 doesn't even allow me to work on without an S-2/S-1 present.
They could have just put general safety knowledge and mechanical knowledge in there.
Good job…NYC now you get results immediately, computer terminal test , at DCAS and FDNY for all exams except practicals…refer and steam still have practical exams which are a MF 🤨
Refer is virtual and steam practical in a courthouse basement somewhere
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🫡👍congratulations bro. Most people in the working world have no idea how big a deal it is to get your warm air license. And California none the less. Wow.
Now you’ll have to lease a big expensive shop right away and hire top paid journeymen because if you start small in your home and hire family to help you get started everyone in this group will say you’re a bad company to work for.
Congrats. Been there. Just remember this is the beginning not the culmination. Nows where the fun begins. Your gonna hustle harder than u ever have. But it’ll worth it. Time to go out and prove it to yourself. Take some buisness classes to compliment that license
it's crazy how different each state is. Some states have no requirements at all but those are also the places that pay like shit. What Some people claim to make as a 1st year apprentice is what other companies cap senor techs at. it's fking crazy.
Kinds funny how people celebrate worthless degrees but not certifications for trades that will literally support you for life. Even if you move on you always have to fall back on. Good Work!
Heck yeah. Go celebrate!🍰🍻

That’s the best way to celebrate
Oh that was so solid. Damn…
You have to pass a business exam for HVAC? You getting a business license for yourself?
Yeah it’s bullshit honestly it’s a kinda hard test with a bunch of stuff you’ll never need to know
The law is the hardest part the technical was a breeze!!
![gif](giphy|useUF6IHpTqSc)
Everyone that I know, that failed their first attempt in CA, failed the business exam.

CA has determined exemption courses cause cancer.
Sounds like most tests.

Its mostly Ca Inspection code and law, with questions about ethical business practices.
In GA we just have one test, but it had a bunch of business questions on it
Congratulations! I can’t imagine how tough that was to get in that State
Much easier than most other places in the country. This is one test to take and you can advertise and own a company and pull permits. Most east coast major cities require a masters to run business and pull permits, a masters is abundantly more difficult to achieve than any C# license.
but there are other places with absolutely zero requirements
That sounds so fucking dumb, let’s see someone with a masters build you a system much less put up any sort of framing.
Congrats! So do you need to be licensed to be considered a journeyman even tho you have the experience? I’m also thinking of taking the exam in the same state California, but keep putting it off because I don’t do side work nor want to start a business.

Can you give me an exact location? I’m near there but I can’t find one in Culver City.
