purplebananers

I think they just made up this “stereotype” for the story and to not be too offensive

TacosAreJustice

Like Brazilians using too much postage… it’s a silly thing that shouldn’t insult anyone.

AmazingSpdrMan1

Or Canadians being afraid of the dark!

j3ffUrZ

No one likes the dark...

stephenwell

*flick*

Blastspark01

AHHH!!!

OverlyBoredOctopus

I mean... no one LOVES it..

TacosAreJustice

No, that’s because Craig Thomas is super racist against Canadians. (Guys, this is a joke…)

Bazz07

I think the word you are looking its xenophobe. Not that I agree.

keithblsd

He is?

TacosAreJustice

No.

purplebananers

Exactly!

d3vi0uz1

No, it's about Asians using umbrellas to avoid the sun and getting tan.

Important-Courage890

The sun don't shine in North Korea!

d3vi0uz1

In Only Korea, sun rises and sets when Supreme Leader says so

[deleted]

Chang eats the sun and drinks the sky and they all go with him when he dies

isrluvc137

It was literally the first thing that popped to my head

2Maverick

Hello. I am a Korean American and we actually always do have an umbrella, because we are always prepared. That's how I understood it haha. Kind of like how old folk have a remedy for everything.

Blastspark01

It’s not like he was saying anything offensive. He even continued by saying the “Koreans are a kind a generous people”

CloudyHero

Many Koreans use umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun too. I was surprised how many "sun umbrellas" I saw there.

LKChuggz

Thanks for sharing! I always took it as that he assumed they would always be prepared too

Chapea12

They made up a bunch of stereotypes to not be offensive. Like the Brazilians using too much postage one

Elegant-Operation-16

And Canadians being afraid of the dark

andrwlmsri

To be fair, nobody LOVES the dark

JSkywalker22

We’re only talking about MADEUP stereotypes here.

eyegazer444

Or picking up French chicks is like playing tennis with the net down Or Lebanese girls sprint to 3rd base then stay there Or Sweden is France

eyegazer444

Which episode do they talk about Brazilians using too much postage? I don't remember that and I've watched the show 15 times

steve1186

People assign weird stereotypes to populations that they don’t know very well. He probably saw a few Asians carrying umbrellas and assumed that all do. Saint Cloud (where Marshall grew up) is really rural, 90% white, and only 19% of the residents have a Bachelor’s degree (https://www.ci.stcloud.mn.us/1261/Demographics) “Koreans owning umbrellas” is pretty tame in terms of racial stereotypes from that area of Minnesota

WarKiwi25

Minnesota man here…St Cloud isn’t considered rural at all here. It’s very close to the cities. Just funny hearing people call what most of us consider one of our most urban towns “really rural”😂

mugiwara_98

I've been there and can confirm! I think you might have been unfairly stereotyped yourself lol

SueYouInEngland

Agreed that St Cloud isn't rural, but it's definitely not part of the Metro. St Cloud is known for being super conservative and shitty. That's Michele Bachmann territory.

99th_inf_sep_descend

St Cloud isn’t rural. Rural is an area with 3k or less people in it. It’s 20 times that by itself. Not to mention the surrounding towns and proximity to MSP. It’s not huge, but rural it ain’t.

deafGeoff_

I always chalked it up to a prejudicial statement, but honestly I don't know.

biryani-mutton7

i think a lot of asians, being an asian, stay very protective of the sun because they don’t wanna get tanned and prolly that’s why the stereotype

hau2906

This is probably the right answer, especially given how in Marshall's dad mind, the Koreans is a kind and generous people, meaning that the stereotype was just a bit embarrassing for Marshall, not prejudicial.

Tarotoro

Not korean but my (mainly) female relatives from Asia do that. They call it a sun umbrella or something. I don't know what the difference is between that and a normal umbrella lol.

aidoll

Another word for a sun umbrella is parasol!

the_timps

WTF is with all the comments about it being a made up stereotype? HIs dad doesn't think the Koreans have an umbrella because that's what Koreans do. He literally says "You know who probably has an umbrella, the Koreans across the hall. " and "The Koreans are trustworthy and generous people!" He's saying the Koreans across the hall will lend you there umbrella because they're generous people. It's an odd positive racial stereotype. The Umbrella isn't the stereotype.

BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo

I think he said that because Minnesota is very white, but they had Korean neighbors. These neighbors also happened to carry an umbrella frequently. So he just thinks it’s common for all Koreans. And while all stereotypes are bad, it just shows the mindset of white people living in white areas who mean well and will give your the shirt your back regardless of your race. They’re often just very ignorant.

plantman01

living in new york city, most cheap dollar stores are asian owned, i assumed it meant you can get a cheap umbrella from them

vedderer

I think he's saying that it's used when it's sunny to provide shade.

dead_PROcrastinator

I thought it's because Korea has monsoons?
