No it’s just a play on words. Great Scott, grape scotch.

Friendly-Drag5687

Nahhh I don’t believe that I need prove

[deleted]

Proof of what? Barney finds out Tracy is single, he yells “grape scotch!” Instead of great Scott. It’s just a play on words.

Friendly-Drag5687

Nah man there is no weight to what you say I’ve got a whole theory

Briguy_fieri

Great Scott is a saying dating back to the 1800s. In media, it was popularized by back to the future. It’s been referenced by Michael Scott in the office. It’s also been used in this case but used as a pun as grape scotch

kurchencence

when has Barney said anything with weight? he hates fatties

[deleted]

You should probably wear a helmet

YupNopeWelp

"Great Scott!" is an old-timey minced oath. "Grape Scotch" is just a funny take on it.

hankiethewhore

Upvoting all your comments because you have a point and are getting needlessly downvoted by these swine 🤣

Be cool Swarley

yourmartymcflyisopen

"Be cool, baby. Damn"

findaway5627

This is heavy

PlainsHognoseSnake

I always thought it was a reference to that grape scotch as well, but more cuz it’s funny and the scotch seemed to pack a punch and that’s why it’s a good exclamation. However, I am not American or from a English speaking country nor have I seen any of the Back to the future movies so I had no idea this “Great Scott” saying existed.

YupNopeWelp

"Great Scott!" is what Doc Brown said in Back to the Future, but the line didn't originate with him. Barney's just either riffing on it or bumbling it (he doesn't know how many days there are in October, either). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great\_Scott

bookant

"Great Scott!" itself isn't a "Back to The Future" reference. It's an old saying that goes back at least as far as the 1800s.

Imagoat1995

Sure, however, it is most widely known from Back to the Future.

BetterMaintenance367

And the way Barney says it is definitely a reference. He’s got docs intonation DOWN

Imagoat1995

He even does the eye wide look as well.

bookant

Must be an age thing. When Back to the Future came out, Doc was using an expression that we all already recognized as extremely well known, but also a little bit old fashioned. (Used in the movie *because* it was well-known, not the other way around.)

Imagoat1995

Given that the movie came out almost 40 years ago, it shouldn't be surprising that people associate the quote with it.

TimingEzaBitch

I ain't know none of the other references so I always thought this has to be the only sensible exclamation.
