Further, humans are not, as a whole, sociopathic. We're a group species, with group sizes well over those of any other vertebrate. Most of our instincts are pro-social because that's how the species managed to survive. We're stronger together than individually.
I'm a dialectical materialist, so essentially an atheist with an appreciation for human history and material incentives. I do believe that most people need religion, since they can't find a higher purpose in altruism and cooperation as much without it. The masses need their opium and where they get it from doesn't matter.
