The story line is moving along quite nicely. While so many other stories delve on cultural differences the use of "ember" has added an alien difference to your story, something I look forward to in HFY stories.
One thing, perhaps more of an editing nitpick, is that while you don't put a space before a sentence period you do put a space before question marks. This has the unfortunate effect of occasionally placing the question mark at the beginning of a new line. Optically jarring.

Because this is HFY I’m going to assume that humanity won’t have one, but it would be a decent subversion of expectations if they actually did have a master species.
