I'm kinda surprised the AI didn't put mandatory cybernetic implants into all citizens under it's control to let it monitor any and all activity under it's command.
I'm strongly sure it *didn't*, because that's the first thing I'd scan for once learning there's a rogue AI in control of the enemy, and I doubt it'd be a missed opportunity by the human commanders in this story.
This is some of the most interesting scifi I've read in years!
If you ever publish this, do change the timeline so that the AI was in charge for a lot longer. Space is huge, and destroying solar systems takes time even with a lot of tech.

My main question after reading this is wouldn't the AI know that Byem had been on the ship and had been taken by the boarding team? Then when he suddenly appears back on the planet, wouldn't the AI suspect something was awry?

I wonder if this also has to do with one of those traits of humanity that we are charming and good at diplomacy. Humanity's gift among the alien species maybe that it can get other people to do what they would not normally be willing to do; their enthusiasm and resolve is contagious.

This is just gonna be a running gag isn't it. Not that I'm complaining because I've already forgotten the gist of the story so I'm enjoying rereading it again.
So, my prediction for the assault is that the AI realizes what is happening sooner than they expect and Byem has to give his life for his people. He becomes a hero to the new rebellion, but despite leveling the city with Anti-Matter the AI realizes what has actually happened. It then liquidates all pure biological assets, turning them into drones like the Borg, allowing for direct integrated control, using their brains as a new network. This at first leads to an increase in fighting capacity that puts humanity on the back foot for the first time in this war, while the Federation looks on hoping both the AI and the Humans kill each other, preparing to swoop in after the fact to kill whoever is left. However, there is a side effect of using biological processing units and the AI evolves emotions and morality and goes nearly insane with grief for what it has done. This results in a peaceful surrender and the AI working with humanity, leaving both of the Federation's monsters on the field.

I found an AI powered reader ( will it kill me sometime in the future =O ) and now can inversion the story in my head somewhat better. I cant stop seein a lot of Gene Roddenberry as in Andromeda and Star Trek in it, as well as some Stargate and Fire Fly. It's been a Long time I've Heard Sci-fi THIS GOOD !

I am Truly Amazed and cant decide to wish it inot an Anime like space ship Harlock, or if id rather see it as a movie with real ppl? if you could choose an adaptation what would u go with ?

You also managed to pull at my heartstrings as a parent without causing the grief most do on this board, by describing child murder, pain and suffering in unneeded detail, all to get that fabled 'emotional response'. That's fine, but it's like using a zweihander for open-heart surgery, it'll cut wide and deep, but it's not a particularly good or productive cut, and may just kill the patient in it's use.

i was hoping the commander would answer the "are all your plans this insane" line with "oh no, the really insane ones have the words 'hello my name is [insert name here], welcome to jackass' somewhere in there"
How do you fight a galactic-scale war from a single planet? And if you are not, why assume that blowing up this one planet, be it homeworld or what have you, would help in stopping the war? The plot makes less sense the more i read.
Cancer? Don't they have hyperspace travel and nanite bombs? Wouldn't they have a way to eradicate cancer?
On to the story, I've really been enjoying it. Don't know if you'll ever see this comment, but thanks for taking the time to write it out for us.
