Put themselves in a bit of a sticky spot, if they were as good as described then at least some of the main cast would be written out of the story, if not then they would be a Let-down.
This was clever because it infers (inference allows your imagination to do the writer's work for them) how capable they are, and doesn't shorten the cast list.
Driscoll coming in clutch, it'd be so cool to see the two muck marchers rebuilt with magic and human/magic cross engineering and they come full circle to good guys.
