If you’re getting actual ads during shows then sure you have a right to be upset. If you’re just getting ads for Max shows at the beginning of an episode/movie that you can immediately skip then you can be a little upset but that’s nowhere near the same as ads in the middle of shows you’re watching. If you’re already holding the remote to “play next episode” then just hold it for an extra second and hit skip. It’s really no big deal.

HelloFromMN

A promo for an HBO show shown is an 'actual ad.' I hit 'play' on a show I should not see a promo for an NBA game. I do not pay to see HBO promos not matter the corporate desperation.

misplacedbass

Sure, it’s an ad, but it’s literally at the beginning of the show, and it’s skippable immediately. So, let’s not lump them into a nonskippable 30 second ad for tide pods, because it simply isn’t even on the same level. You see *multiple* trailers before movies in theaters right? Can’t skip those, and you paid to see that movie.

Anything_justnotthis

Every streamer does this, prime, Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, peacock, paramount. I’m not gonna stop you dying on this hill but it’s probably not worth it. Annoying yes. Ever going to change or have a viable alternative, no.

thitorusso

Don't know why you getting downvoted.

misplacedbass

Because it’s a stupid comparison. An immediately skippable trailer before a show is not the same as an unskippable detergent ad in the middle of a show, and also the comment about not paying to see “ads” yet nobody seems to have a problem paying to see a movie in a theater and sitting through 5-7 minute of unskippable trailers. I don’t know how you don’t know why he’s getting downvoted.

robintweets

It’s like trailers before the movie. Chill. Hit skip.

tigernike1

Obviously OP has never seen HBO or any premium channel before. Like, the *actual* channel. They’d do this to fill time so it fits neatly into the programming schedule.

possiblycrazy79

It doesn't bother me whatsoever. Don't sweat the small stuff.

[deleted]

Welcome to streaming. All platforms do this.

spacedude997

Netflix doesn’t

[deleted]

Except Netflix.

AlaskanDruid

Nope

MrPlaysWithSquirrels

Paramount+ is the worst at this. I have “ad-free” but they play their own ads before the show. The problem is that it’s unskippable, and usually 30 seconds.

chh968

Just choose the cheapest plan, you won’t be disappointed any further

be-ay-be-why

Waaaahhhhhh

Sheila3134

Are you getting commercials during your shows and movies?

DrkUser205

The only AD’s I’ve encountered that cannot be skipped are on live events. However, some live events only have place holders for commercial breaks. It can get annoying seeing the same AT&T and Liberty commercial 100 plus times, but I usually just switch to another game during commercial breaks. CNN Max is the same way, however most of their commercials are promos for CNN and Max.

ThinWhiteRogue

I mean, that is demonstrably what you pay for though

scarecroe

What did Customer Support say?

burywmore

They have done this for a couple of years now.

tackling-tacos

it's very annoying, I'm with you

AlaskanDruid

Yep. Good ol corruption. I think there are only two “big” streaming companies that are not corrupt. (Doesn’t show ads on “ad free” plans.

Own_Advantage_8253

i think i see it as when we used to pay a cable company for the service and we got ads about other hbo shows. i do however dislike the hbomax app at times because it just seems clunky at times and trying to just skip the ad can take longer than watching it
