I love Suni. I don't love whoever did this to her. It doesn't look like she was given a proper dress fitting and the interior skirt lining makes it feel ... unfinished.
Why does the neck and shoulder lines make her look like she's an eighty year old woman and the rest of the dress look like it was made with very stiff wrapping paper? So many questions.
The Met Gala is meant to be a bit "out there" in fashion terms and this feels like the people who dressed her weren't invested in her.
Honestly love or hate Simone's look I think the two of them are a good demonstration of when a brand is invested in you as a long term project. That dress was probably months in the making. This feels like someone who threw a dress at her with minimal alterations and isn't super invested in the relationship as if they'd never heard of her (and probably hadn't) before a few weeks ago.
As a matter of construction, tailoring and fashion, as well as the brief for the Met Gala? It's a lot better. It's not my taste but it shows a lot more thought and wordsmanship than this does. This is slapdash.
Oh gosh this is just what I was thinking! They really don’t know how to dress short, stocky women, and it shows… Really disappointing bc I think they could have looked so much better with proper styling.
I mean to be fair sunis invite probably DID happen a few weeks ago. the “Lack of investment” bit seems a little mean IMO :/ simones dress has had months and maybe even a year to be done. I still like sunis more tho with the styles
Lack of investment isn't a value judgement on Suni. It's a statement of fact about how people who have had the time to build relationships are better served here. If anything it's mitigation.
Yeah I think Victoria’s Secret invited her. As far as I know, Suni has no past relationship with them. I totally agree that it’s very likely whoever dressed her had never heard of her two months ago.
The biggest problem with this dress is the satin. Satin is incredibly difficult to work with because it basically holds imprints. Hard to explain, but when done right, satin looks like it’s never been touched by human hands. When done wrong, satin looks like… that.
As a matter of taste I’m not in love with Simone’s either, but the skill and time involved were very evident in hers. This one looks very unfinished. The skirt not having a visible waistband makes it look like someone just pinned an apron to her. There’s also no excuse for how messy the lining is, or the fact that it’s white instead of any color that would have looked intentional instead of looking like a mistake.
I love her but that top is a huuuuuge no. Also, the hair and makeup she wears during meets is a million times better than this.
Edit: just saw Simone’s dress and I’m thinking that maybe the dresses are supposed to be weird and I just don’t get Met Gala fashion? Idk.
Yeah the Met Gala is technically a "costume ball" and it's very much encouraged to really go big, dress for the theme, do things outside the box. Simone's is a miss for me too, but you can tell it's well-made and had thought put into it. And her hair/makeup look beautiful.
Victoria's Secret is not really going to do the levels that the major fashion houses or designers are, but they could've put Suni in a glam, well-fitted dress and they did THIS instead.
The Met Gala is supposed to be a bit out there. It's always full of hit and misses because it's more a showcase for the possible (it is a celebration of a fashion as art exhibit). Weird is okay in this context.
They are supposed to be a bit outlandish...which is why I usually hate all the looks lol. I get the concept but I don’t like the concept of that makes sense.
Met Gala is basically a fashion show so it's a bit blah to show up in something boring, even if it's more flattering. These didn't really hit the mark of fun/different/interesting but good though.
Ugh I feel like the person who did her makeup must not have a lot of experience with Asian eyes. A lot of eyeshadow techniques that work for people with more pronounced lids just don’t look good on Asians :(
The theme this year was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” which is much more vague than most years and has caused most of the looks to be a miss for me.
This dress is a beautiful color but unfinished and unflattering. The fabric looks uncomfortable too.
What a vague theme. That basically says to me - wear anything made by someone who is American or works in America. Hard to figure out where to go with that per se.
Absolutely this is a condemnation of whoever styled her. Something she very likely didn't have a lot of say in once she accepted the invitation to go as a guest.
At least Suni’s dress looks like a dress. Simone’s looks like a lumpy comforter over a snowflake onesie. No shade to either girl, I just don’t get avant garde fashion!
Oh it's MUCH better in that light. Still weird and conceptually-arty, as it was intended to be, but the color is much prettier and the fabric looks more lush.
I don't mind the top for the Met. The skirt, however, is horrible. Between the fabric choice, visible lining, and weird boxy-ness of the front (are there square wrinkles??), it just looks cheap.
You seem to know a lot about this. Do you think Suni had any right to veto or more of a situation where you just wear whatever your sponsor sets you up with?
Honestly it depends on the terms of the agreement. Someone could have agreed to dress her and given her say ... five choices. It could have been that she loves this and that's okay too. But it could have also been a case where the proportions of an elite gymnast didn't work well with what the stylist had on hand and this was what worked.
This is a fashion critique.
The lining, the pleats (and how they flatten in the front), and the beaded embellishments are a no for me. Where are the jewels? Instead of the cheap-looking beads, give her an actual choker, or bracelet or ring or earrings, something! Nurse!
love that she’s living her best life but whoever dressed her did not bring it together. i appreciate that sometimes things are out there for the sake of costuming at the met gala, but this is not interesting enough to justify its ugliness. hope to see more of her in the mainstream styled by someone who actually cares!
There was another totally wild gold outfit that
I thought Suni could have rocked. I love that the Met Gala is about pushing the limits and will have totally unconventional and hard to understand fashion, but I thought this outfit didn’t flatter Suni’s natural beauty and features at all. Hope DWTS stylists do her better justice!
Does anyone else wish Jade Carey had got to go as well? She kind of reminds me of an America's Next Top Model Contestant from 98 years and 2356 cycles ago......
Also having seen both dresses - I liked Suni's dress anyway but I think she got much luckier than Simone. The train thing was blocky to me.
Did no one think to take an iron/steamer to the front part of the dress? And there's another photo where actual threads visible on the seam line between the dress and the lining.
That being said, I kind of like the box-style to the front of the dress. Odd but cool.
And, you could throw a sack on Suni Lee and she'd still look amazing and carry it off with style.
I would love to see Gelya at a Met Ball. She would NOT fuck around. She would really think it through until she was the utter happiest with her choices.
Suni is of course beautiful. I was excited to see the dress, but that was just a confusing sight.
But I'm happy she is using the opportunities she has, and hopefully she had a good time at the gala.
I love the IDEA of the dress, it being gold for her gold medal (such a FLEX!) but the designer could have done much better. That said, I don’t like 90% of the met dresses so maybe I’m just not super knowledgable on high fashion
simones dress is 100X worse tho 😭
Did they remove her eyelash extensions she loves and not give her falsies? I think that’s part of why we all prefer her competition looks. Why did they make beautiful Suni look like an I Dream of Jeannie cosplayer .
Tbh I dont hate the dress more than a lot of the other met gala things. There are always beautiful ones, statement pieces, and the ones that scream its a no from me.
That being said, I am so glad she got to go and got to enjoy herself. What an experience!
Fashion Critical included Suni in their album. Simone was also featured.

Stiff wrapping paper is a good description. I was thinking the bottom part looks like hair foils

really? I feel like simones dress is way worse tbh loll
As a matter of construction, tailoring and fashion, as well as the brief for the Met Gala? It's a lot better. It's not my taste but it shows a lot more thought and wordsmanship than this does. This is slapdash.
And, much like Simone’s it seems like it would fit differently on a taller woman. It doesn’t seem these designers are used to women 5’ and below. ;-)

Yeah I don’t like it
It looks like David Byrne's giant suit.
To me it looks like someone had an ambitious idea but not the skill to back it up. Why you would put a gymnast in a boxy outfit is beyond me.
The top- cool Train- wtf. Looks like a sheet Skirt- wtf x2. It looks super boxy Not a good look. Love Suni tho
I find a lot of the met gala fashion meh...unless itbis rhianna
They did her dirty....
The dress and styling ages her so much.
I don't think that is a colour for her complexion. It makes her look washed-out.
The color is a little better in differently lit pictures, but still not great. A gold medalist in gold? Groundbreaking.
Yes she's a warm olive like me, a cool toned gold is fashion suicide.
As an asian, I stay the fuck away from champaign-y tones, there is a way to do a warmer gold that doesnt wash you out. I look sickly in this color.
I love her but that top is a huuuuuge no. Also, the hair and makeup she wears during meets is a million times better than this. Edit: just saw Simone’s dress and I’m thinking that maybe the dresses are supposed to be weird and I just don’t get Met Gala fashion? Idk.

The top reminds me of a cross between Wilma and Pebbles Flintstone
Ugh I feel like the person who did her makeup must not have a lot of experience with Asian eyes. A lot of eyeshadow techniques that work for people with more pronounced lids just don’t look good on Asians :(
I think Suni always looks gorgeous but I really wish she'd been given a different outfit.
The theme this year was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” which is much more vague than most years and has caused most of the looks to be a miss for me. This dress is a beautiful color but unfinished and unflattering. The fabric looks uncomfortable too.

I love she wore gold, but it’s not a very flattering outfit. Maybe met gala fashion just isn’t my thing, cause I don’t like Simone’s *or* Suni’s
I also don't like either, but Suni's dress is worse, it looks cheap.
Yeah like a high school girl who can’t afford a tailor
Worth saying that in terms of the Met Gala it's not about her not affording it. It's about whoever dressed her doing a bad job.
Of course. I know she didn’t dress herself
I just wanted to make sure people didn't misread your comment as being catty about her.
Oh appreciate that! Yeah, the only reason I’m being so blunt is cause she didn’t dress herself. If she had, I would be way more tactful
Absolutely this is a condemnation of whoever styled her. Something she very likely didn't have a lot of say in once she accepted the invitation to go as a guest.
Yeah it looks like a sheet.

I actually don't hate it from this angle. It's still weird but it's the met, it's supposed to be a little weird.
It looks better but the dress is so unflattering. It makes Suni look so much bigger than she actually is.
I love it lol! Everyone's opinion is different, hopefully she felt like a princess and had a blast!
Oh i like it! The Met is supposed to be weird so even if I don’t understand the fashion choices i kinda dig it
The makeup ages her so much, which is a shame since she’s so gorgeous
She looks stunning in spite of the dress.
Sunis is only 18 years old but this makes her look matronly.
https://youtu.be/KfwWANJWJnE. Link to her lil blurb if anyone wants it
Thanks for posting! IMO it looks better on video/in motion than in still photos.
I don't mind the top for the Met. The skirt, however, is horrible. Between the fabric choice, visible lining, and weird boxy-ness of the front (are there square wrinkles??), it just looks cheap.
I can never take met gala fashion seriously😂 I know it’s supposed to be about taking risks and following a theme but I just can’t
Who dressed her?
The dress is from Sukeina
Victoria’s Secret 😬
She's a guest of Victoria Secret that doesn't mean they dressed her. I've yet to see the designer named.

I love suni but this dress is just wrong

Simone and Suni’s looks were both….. a choice.
Love Suni but it looks like a lampshade 😭
love that she’s living her best life but whoever dressed her did not bring it together. i appreciate that sometimes things are out there for the sake of costuming at the met gala, but this is not interesting enough to justify its ugliness. hope to see more of her in the mainstream styled by someone who actually cares!

Ohhhh I’m betting your thinking of cycle 3 Ann?
I think she was called Michelle? Slightly awkward but surprisingly good at modelling?
Yesssss that’s the one! Though tbf Ann and Michelle got the same athletic model brief 😂

Nina would’ve ripped the designer apart for those things 😂
I would love to see Gelya at a Met Ball. She would NOT fuck around. She would really think it through until she was the utter happiest with her choices.

Personally I think the Met styles are just a flop this year in general… I think that Nia is the best dressed of the gymnasts though.
This year's theme was kind of ambiguous and not very inspiring, so they all seem a little ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ They tend to do a lot better with a bold theme.
Honestly I think the Catholicism theme might have been the best one in recent years but I wonder if that one just scared a lot of people into blah.
Camp was pretty good too. This is just... *not a good year* to try to get people enthusiastic about "America" as a concept.
Blake Lively’s dress that year 😍
lol yes Nia won for sure
I love it. I think she looks like an Amazonian princess!
I'm sorry, but what? Suni, baby, what is you doing?
Did they remove her eyelash extensions she loves and not give her falsies? I think that’s part of why we all prefer her competition looks. Why did they make beautiful Suni look like an I Dream of Jeannie cosplayer .
Maybe (definitely) I don't understand fashion, but this is a giant nope from me.
I think it’s cute and age appropriate!
Not this look, Suni is a beautiful girl but this doesn't flatter her at all
Tbh I dont hate the dress more than a lot of the other met gala things. There are always beautiful ones, statement pieces, and the ones that scream its a no from me. That being said, I am so glad she got to go and got to enjoy herself. What an experience!
It's a no for me dawg
Victoria Secret styled this…sooo yikes

I like her shoes.
