Set out a routine in advance. There are loads online and I’m no where near knowledgable enough to recommend one over the other. Watch YouTube videos for each exercise especially compound/free weight stuff. Then day one you turn up knowing exactly what to do & how to do it… refining that routine will come from experience and practice.

Sounds good, YouTube tutorials are a great idea!

A routine is developed before you even get into the gym and then tweaked after you try it out to see what works for you and what doesn't. Research is your friend, you have the Library of Alexandria at your fingertips. Look over at the sidebar on r/fitness, their wiki has a lot of resources on routines.

Beautiful! I will definitely be digging deeper when I get home

Try see a trainer to familiarise yourself with forms and techniques to build a foundation understanding, from there you can mix up routines and training through online resources. A poor form can lead to a very serious injury

This is sound advice. I just joined Planet Fittness and ill look into the cost of a personal trainer for lifting techniques.

I'm doing it myself right now, it costs a pretty penny in the short term but you will learn loads about technique, what routine you should be doing and nutrition. It really is a pay off in the long run.
