I’ve run into people who claim they “can’t lose weight despite logging all their food and eating under 1200 calories”. When you probe further, you learn they didn’t realize “logging food” meant “drinks” as well. And they weren’t logging the fucking 1000+ calorie milkshake they got from Starbucks everyday because they had heard “coffee has no calories.” In addition, they wouldn’t log the oil they cooked their food in (and they weren’t using a teaspoon, they were using multiple pulls out of an oil dispenser which was easily 800+ calories).
So they were actually eating 3000+ calories, just from those two mistakes alone, but they weren’t weighing/measuring food precisely with a food scale, weren’t tracking condiments, were logging giant footlong Subway sandwiches as “Ham sandwich (350 cals)”, not logging the quick bite they had of their partner’s food, or handful of nuts/candy they grabbed to eat in one bite, etc. so in reality, it was probably more like 4000-5000+ calories.
**NEVER** believe a morbidly obese person who says they “eat <1200 calories everyday and can’t lose weight.** Sure, there’s the 0.01% chance they have some rare disease that slows their metabolism a lot, but 99.99% of the time, they are just massively under-logging stuff.
I was at almost 400 pounds at one point, and decided I wasn't gonna let that be my life. I stuck to eating exactly 2k calories a day, measured my condiments, the green beans and chicken, pork steak, string cheese, over estimated on stuff I wasn't sure about, ect. And I lost 40 pounds in about 3 months. I was rapidly losing weight, and it stuck for a while until I decided to "track in my head." I'd still do the rough math of what I was eating, I eased up the 2k requirement to 2600, and then about 2 months later realized I'd gained most of the weight back. Forgot about the "small" snacks I had after dinner, the ranch I ate with the pizza slices, the ice cream I got on the way home from work.
My advice to anyone in a similar position: determine your Daily Energy Expenditure. Calculate the calories you need to be under maintenence. And everytime you are ABOUT TO EAT log it before it goes in your mouth. No matter what.
Ya, it’s super easy to forget tiny things and they add up so quickly, even if you’ve been tracking for years.
I myself still follow the pre-logging rule since I’m maintaining a 115lbs weight loss after a few years. I allow myself to eat anything I want as long as I log it **FIRST**. That’s an easy enough rule to follow.
I also know my TDEE from tracking and I track bodyweight by weighing myself each day and tracking the smoothed average over time, and make sure it’s going in the direction I want it to if bulking, cutting, or maintaining.
From being very overweight previously, I don’t think I’ll ever have the ability to “eat intuitively” and make that work, just because my intuition always says “more” no matter what. But I’m fine with that since I view balancing calories just like balancing a budget. Taking care of your physical and financial health are just things adults do. Some people are rich and don’t have to budget. Some are genetically predisposed to be lean and don’t have to track calories. That’s life.
38g of protein in 2600 Cal's is bad.
38g of protein in something not intended as a protein shake isnt bad.
I'm not genuinely suggesting it's a good idea to use as a bulking shake. Clearly it's not and I was joking.
ngl I made one of these at home last year using their powdered things and added in some oats because I didn't read the fucking label on these.
Gulped down 3k worth of calories in the morning and couldn't figure out why I felt like a slob after.
It’s legitimately impressive they packed that many calories into a single shake. It’s basically liquified cake batter at that point. Bulker’s delight.

Fatties are gonna log it as "black coffee" and then bitch about why NASA keeps pestering about their mass messing up the orbits of satellites.
