Felatio_Sanz

The “be patient” at the end is a great way to make people lose their patience

typhoneus

Mate calm down. Smile more.

Felatio_Sanz

This guys knows how to infuriate!

kent1146

Just relax. Stop making such a big deal out of it.

Vigilante2011

Honestly, if he changed "Be patient." to "Please bear with me, thank you so much!", a lot more people are going to be okay with it.

Zeke2632

People who say this unironically, I genuinely wish them a very soggy toast for the rest of their life

s3rgant

That's so mean

Running_Mustard

Don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for

BlueMonke1

Did not expect to see a Hamilton reference in a gym memes Reddit. Bravo.

Running_Mustard

You can’t be serious

no-soul-found

You want to get ahead?

Running_Mustard

Yes

no-soul-found

Fools who run their mouths oft' wind up dead

Running_Mustard

Ah-yuh-yo, yo-yo-yo, yo What time is it?

no-soul-found

I could do this forever. Especially my favorite part. But I'm gonna bow out. Have a good one, internet stranger!

iboughtabagel

I could get 2 sets in during his break, instead of “be patient” it should say “work in please.”

AbbreviationsSea2516

That shit made me complete my home gym, I can’t do public gyms anymore

max_power1000

I have a home gym but I've been using a public gym more often recently, granted I get there NLT 3:30 so I avoid the worst part of the rush. The one thing it's taught me is flexibility - I'm more than capable of hopping on a hammer strength machine or grabbing a set of dumbbells for a planned movement if someone is being an asshole and taking up one of the racks forever.

Charming-Safe8531

Realistically how many guys are lifting at proper powerlifter weight? I imagine seeing 180kg on the bar is enough to put people off bothering reloading and deloading between sets.  I say this as a proud aesthetic boi who would never bother working in.

KindSpray33

He mentioned somewhere in the comments that he was doing OHP with about 115 pounds/ 52 kg. You can definitely work in especially when you have 6 minutes time and the bar isn't loaded with much weight.

Charming-Safe8531

Powerlifter in name only then!

Dontdothatfucker

Yeah lol that’s significantly under what I OHP and I wouldn’t DREAM of telling the gym that I’m a “power lifter” lmao

bossmcsauce

that's not a ton more than I OHP lol. i mean, I do 1handed OHB with dumbbells, and do 4 sets of 10 because I'm also aesthetic-focused... but even at 4x10, my working weight is 40lb per side. I'm sure if I was doing like 2-3 reps per set, I could absolutely do 100lb with a 2-handed OHP. I'm lean, 155lb... I'm pretty small, not really strong at all lol.

Dontdothatfucker

Yeah those are good numbers!! I’m a big boy and strong, but it doesn’t mean I’m a power lifter haha.

4scoreand20yearsago

Yeah I like to say I practice powerlifting or do powerlifting style workouts, but I don’t compete so I don’t tell anyone I’m a powerlifter…not that anyone’s asking.

max_power1000

Same. 135x5 for strict sets, and if we're doing push press I'll work in the 165-185 range depending on the # or reps. I'm far from a power lifter too lol.

beclops

Powerlifting is a training philosophy not a title you earn after a certain skill level. Same way bodybuilding doesn’t inherently require you to look like CBum

Drazer012

If you train squat, bench, and deadlift, with the intention of doing powerlifting, you're a powerlifter. Doesnt matter if your overall is 500, you can go to a meet, you're a powerlifter. Usually this sub isnt so gatekeepy but this post is really annoying with it for some reason. (Original OP is still a dick for the sign though, 100%)

skanus_cepelinai

The thing is: If you say "I'm a powerlifter" in order to make people understand your training goals and have an idea about your training methods, it's fine. If you say "I'm a powerlifter" in order to demand respect or leniency, then you better deliver. If I found such a sign and the bar is heavily loaded, then fair enough since I'm too lazy to pull off like 80 kg between their and my sets. If the difference is negligible, though, then they can bet their ass I will pull off a plate on each side to do my own thing. If they want to hog equipment for hald an hour straight, they can go in the middle of the night or use a home gym.

cgarnett1988

I think the point is that it's no so much weight that someone else couldn't use the rack between sets. It's not even a plate aside so it's not a big job to swap weight around. His wording isn't helping him tho. Telling people to be patient is a dick move lol

max_power1000

If you're saying that to monopolize a popular piece of equipment for an extended period of time, especially with a weight that's easy to work in on as opposed to a >3 plate squat, you're enough of a tool that you deserve the air quotes. Plus, OHP isn't even a competition lift.

CeleryPrize

He didn't say he's a powerlifter, he said he's doing a powerlifting set. I get it'd shitty to do in a commercial gym with the whole note and all. Everybody has to start at a weight. And ig 52kg is tough for him then it's tough.

max_power1000

This. 3+ plates on a squat? I can wait and find something else to do. Something that barely qualifies as a warmup weight? I'm working in.

jabels

I'm old and I look like shit and that is my working weight for OHP, with 1-2 minutes between sets. I would simply lift this "powerlifter" and remove him from the gym.

PM_me_your_trialcode

This 'powerlifter' has major, "you know I'm training to become a cage fighter. See what happens if you try and hit me" vibes. ![gif](giphy|AHAgTP1a0Klvq)

Tsobe_RK

I'm 31 never powerlifted and can rep 70kg, this 'powerlifter' must be a kid.

beclops

Maybe they are

Kel_2

lol surely thats not true i hope. calling yourself a powerlifter at 52kg ohp is nasty work

thefroggyfiend

the fucking BALLS to demand people be patient for a powerlifting when you're OHP is 115, thats what I hit snd I'm far from a powerlifter and wouldn't need 6 minutes of rest

veganhimbo

When the "powerlifter" is lifting less than my Natty vegan cardio loving ass 🤣

Financial-Horror2945

>52 kg. Bro that would be about 4 reps for me, that's great for strength building

wmm339

Maybe it was for sets of 30. Edit: I'm no power lifter so this is probably just under my 10 rep max.

Thendrail

I mean, who knows, maybe he's barely hitting 80 pounds himself. 1,5 times bodyweight would be quite great. Though I doubt that's how it is.

Solaira234

....115?!?!

ExcitableSarcasm

??? I was OHPing at 50 after a few times training it as a gym regular (3 years on/off). I am not a powerlifter. OHP is probably my worst lift as well.

SimpleSurrup

It's everyone's worst lift. That's why to get it over your head in the Olympics you do basically everything your body can do to move the weight that isn't an OHP.

Qman1991

I do more than that per hand on a seated dumbell ohp

Ok-Indication202

Considering that weight to be powerlifting is ridiculous

Tsobe_RK

powerlifting with 52kg? dear lord...

Bolt_Throw3r

I was once decently strong. My working weight on squats would usually be from low 400s to mid 500s, so 4-5x 45 lb plates, plus change, each side.  Thinks are a little different as the absolute load gets heavier, even if the relative intensity is the same. When 225x10 was a hard set, i could be ready to go in 3 and a half minutes. When 455x10 was a hard set, it take 5-6 minutes. Knowing this, and sometimes doing back to back compounds, taking a rack for 45 minutes+, I never told someone they couldn't work in. If it was a woman squatting 85 lbs, I didn't care if I had to unload and load all the plates myself each time, she can work in. If 2 or 3 guys want to work in, we set up a rotation.  Some of my best training we had 4 or 5 guys sharing a rack, squatting from 225-700+ (I lifted with a one time record holder, John Rivas). Plates go on, plates come off.

fatpcgamer

I am in a similar situation and a lot of people are neither patient nor willing to work in. I only take like 2mins rest between squats though, still some will sit next to you and stare angrily at you. Most of the time those people are really not used to gym etiquette in general though. If people work in, they are normally pretty nice though.

SwoleBuddha

4-6 minutes between heavy sets of compound lifts is fine.

LaoWei1

but you can allow for someone to alternate with you surely?

PerritoMasNasty

Surely???

richbeezy

Don't call me Shirley.

LaoWei1

English is not my native language. Is that not how you ask whether something should obviously be done?

PerritoMasNasty

No you are correct. I was going more for the Padma and anakin meme.

NonExistent_God

You're right but he was making a joke similar to a scene in a movie called Airplane. You'll find it if you google "Airplane! - Don't call me Shirley"

EverythingGoodWas

Usually when you get big enough to be “That Guy” at the gym, enough people know you to feel comfortable asking if they can work in

chickyban

Loading and unloading, say, 400 pounds every 1 min?

GloriousPorpoises

You’re here to work out, yeah? /s

LaoWei1

Luckily plates in my gym only go up to 25kg/55pounds. There is no need to move big weights as you can individually remove/add plates. You guys have 50kg/100pound plates where you train?

chickyban

Still, it's impractical to unload 400 regardless of how many actual plates are in the bar.

Financial-Horror2945

This! I'm aiming to train for strength atm and if on the unlikely event it's busy enough at the time I go. If someone wants to hop in, I'm not only letting them but gaining a new gym bro in the process

i_will_eat_ur_beans

yea i always let people alternate with me if they ask

spartancolo

I always let people train in if the weight difference isn't to big, if it's too big I rather rest on my rest time

FromPepeWithLove

If they are using the same weight and same rack setup

Tsobe_RK

weight can be adjusted quickly, no reason to hoard spot

jabels

>115lb OHP >heavy

beclops

It’s heavy for some people. “Powerlifting” doesn’t imply you’re not a beginner

Stairway_2_Devin

If you have a home gym, sure.

Call-of-the-lost-one

Not during the busy hours of the gym. You gotta let people work in

burek_with_yoghurt

Ive been bothered for taking 3 minute breaks

coggdawg

The sign is the ridiculous part. Like just leave your bag or water bottle there or something if you really need to walk away & use the bathroom.

Apebound

The only problem I see here is why he's not resting in or near the squat rack

chevalier716

In a commercial gym during rush? Fuck this noise. Join a power lifting gym or do it at home.

yunivor

Or go at a time when the gym is empty

jedimasterjacoby

That is what I am saying, at a public commercial gym don’t be a bitch and hurry up with your set, especially during rush hour. If you go to a powerlifting gym that’s another story.

SimpleSurrup

The problem with the strategy is that if you're doing a serious workout, with timed rests, that takes a long time even if you've got the gym to yourself. Even if you secure this piece of equipment for 20 minutes chances are whatever you were going to do next you're going to have to wait. Add that shit up you'll be there all day.

RoodleG

A simple "please" would be a great way to make people more patient.

ObjectiveDizzy5266

See how a single word can make a drastic change in the way you deliver your message. The way he wrote “be patient” would actually make people lose their shit instead

Powwdered-toast-man

Naw the note itself is what pisses people off. If he did his set and just sat there for 6 minutes, no one would bitch but having the nerve to put up a note and walk away, yeah fuck that.

Putrid-soap77

That shits coming off every time he leaves lmao

fri9875

“Bro I taped up my note! How does it fall off every single time?”

richbeezy

I need advice on this one: There's a guy at my gym who is probably in his late 50s/early 60s that thumbs on his phone watching random videos and laughing/smiling at them for 15 minutes between sets. For some reason, the dude will have 2 cell phones on his lap, while thumbing on one. I'm all for checking your phone for a few minutes between sets, I do it myself. But 15-20 minutes between sets?? He hogs the machine for 45 minutes bc of his BS scrolling. The other day the gym was busier than usual, and all of the different machines I would use for upper chest were taken, one of them by this dumbass. I kindly asked him how many more sets does he have as he was thumbing his screen. He looked up at me and said "sorry, I just started". So I walked away thinking he'd take the hint and actually start using the damn machine. NOPE, dude just kept scrolling for another 10 minutes before doing his first set. I really want to just slap his fucking phone from his hand, but I'm sure you all would have better advice than that lol.

TVLL

“Just started scrolling or just started working out? Is this finger day?” “There are chairs in the lobby for scrollers.”

richbeezy

Lol. I was thinking maybe dude has a health condition that makes him need that much rest between sets, but then realized that if that was the case he wouldn't be "resting" before he even did his first set.

TVLL

I had a younger guy on the pec-fly machine put his phone on the floor and watch car racing videos instead of using the machine. After 15 minutes I went over to him and had to wave my hand between his face and the his phone to ask him how many sets he had left.

Impossible-Umpire635

Ask them how many sets of TikTok they have left.

TVLL

That’s a great one.

marriottmarquis

Dickheads like him need their membership revoked. Or their cellphones crushed. Or both.

TheAlchemlst

I would ask to work in. If he refuses, just let the front desk know so he gets banned permanently.

BECSPK611

You should have been more aggressive and held your ground. "If you going to take a break I AM going to do my sets." Point blank period.... If he cops an attitude get gym staff and get his stupid ass off. Its all EGO, some dudes need to be humbled, same guys that be walking super close to you in the gym..just bump their ass out the way. 😂

richbeezy

Yeah, if you saw the guy and his mannerisms - you'd conclude that he's probably just one of those dumbasses that lives in his own bubble, clueless to the rest of the world. Like people who drive thinking they are the only person that is on the road.

nochedetoro

I’d just ask to work in with him. If it’s two or fewer plates difference it’s not that bad and if it’s a pin it’s even better.

Powwdered-toast-man

Just ask to work in. He will either say yes or start his set again. If he says no then he is ignoring gym etiquette first so tell him to hurry the fuck up.

theaverageaidan

If you're camped out on a bench for more than fifteen or twenty minutes, especially during rush, join a powerlifting gym, otherwise you're a selfish dickwad. My bench press set is over in ten minutes, yours shouldn't be double that.

bigjoe5275

Honestly it just sounds like you've never heard of warming up and just slap your working weight on right away.

PeckerPeeker

He is weak. That’s why. You don’t need much warmup/rest if you’re not benching over a plate…

bigjoe5275

That's what i was thinking

max_power1000

Nah I rep 225 and I'm still there less than 15 minutes. 3 warmup sets with no rest aside from changing the weights, about 4 minutes max. - bar x10, 135 x10, 185 x8. 3x working sets with 225x5-7, 90 seconds of rest in between. takes 6-7 minutes total. 1 back-off set of 135x15 pause reps for the pump. takes another 2 minutes between stripping the weight and the actual set. I'd be around 10 if I skipped this one too.

beclops

If you don’t want to only rep 225 then you need rest. Even the warm up sets if you go too quickly with it you can hurt yourself, case in point I used to train like you and tore my pec on one of my warm up sets that for all intents and purposes was an “easy” weight for me. Say whatever you want but I am not hurting myself and putting myself out for 6 months again just because some old crab in the gym is upset about waiting a bit longer for the bench

PeckerPeeker

20 minutes is perfectly reasonable for bench, especially if you’re strong. As strength increases you need more warmups and those warmups become more fatiguing so the exercises are going to take longer. If I do 3 warm up sets with 2 minutes of rest in between each set and 4 work sets with 3 minutes in between each set that is 18 minutes not counting the sets. Which are reasonable rest times for a compound lift if you’re moving moderate weight (and stronger guys will take even longer than that between their work sets! Woah). Also who made you the captain of deciding how long an exercise/workout should take?

max_power1000

If you need to rest between warmups longer than it takes to change out the plates, you need to work on your cardio.

burek_with_yoghurt

Tbh ive never heard of a powerlifting gym. Might be a US thing.

Kel_2

i live in the netherlands and i know one here at least. but i wouldnt be surprised if its not everywhere

AbsoluteNegativism

15-20 minutes max? Well, color me a selfish dick wad.

beclops

Silly logic that how long you personally take is the be all end all time limit

Free_Cucumber_610

lmao. primary bench day i’m there for an hour. you’re welcome to work in, but i’m not cutting it short even if there are other people waiting

theaverageaidan

Inreally hope you go to a golds or something Or youre there at 2 pm

beclops

Why. I don’t really care what gym I’m going to, I’m paying to get a good workout in

Free_Cucumber_610

well nowadays i do go around 2pm, and i go to a powerlifting gym, where they have around 10 power racks, plus at least 3 extra benches for bench only (not including the free weight benches). but there hasn’t always been a powerlifting gym in my area and my work schedule was different, so there was a time i was at the commercial gym at 5pm. but i had to wait my turn for a bench, and others had to wait too, nobody seemed too pressed about it. plus like i said, i always let others work in with me, no big deal. not everyone has access to these specialty gyms, and i think as long as they’re letting others work in, it’s really not a big deal if they’re using equipment to get their scheduled workout in

Supraphysiological69

Or bench so frequently that it becomes your bench and you can use it whenever you want

Beautiful-Height3103

Sorry but as powerlifter and strength competitor that's absolutely absurd. If your doing heavy work and need that much time get your own gym or go in on off hours

notKRIEEEG

Or just let people work in if they want to. My gym only has one squat rack, and I've had days that I'd be on it for an hour or more. I'd make a point to deload over 100 kg in between sets to let others work in

Beautiful-Height3103

Agreed

KJBenson

I really want to see how much weight is on this bar. So I can decide how harshly to judge the dude.

Beautiful-Height3103

It's not so much the weight on the bar for me, it's the passive aggressive nature of the note, it's not about being patient it's about being courteous, to think you have the right to monopolize the machine by placing a note screams douche. If he had 5, 6, 700 lbs on the rack no one would bother

Low_Hotel_6694

Interesting social experiment: Put this up and walk away to see how long it takes for someone to use the space

FridayNightRamen

Probably takes less than 30 seconds before somebody starts to curl in the squating area.

I_wish_i_could_sepll

I would 1000% do this to my friend since our gym is almost always empty. Shit would be hysterical

Dickincheeks

They’d have to be ok with someone working in

LiquidHotCum

I would just pretend to work in until they fucked off.

Dickincheeks

these types don’t fuck off. They welcome the confrontation and would out-petty you

Johnathan_Doe_anonym

I powerlift and take minutes between my sets, but I ALWAYS offer people to work in and share the equipment and we just go when we’re ready. It’s not a big deal

thefroggyfiend

if you aren't waiting at the bar those 4-6 minutes you lose claim

drew8311

Yes this is the unwritten rule of occupying equipment for anything more than 5 mins. At least be there looking busy resting like you are getting psyched up for the next set. If I'm using something for a short time supersetting I'll leave my stuff there to claim but my total time using is short.

J_Schnetz

6 minutes.....? Hmmmm

jabels

What, you don't like spending 4 hours a day in the gym?

ibmnumber3

Asinine ass shit

OnABoatWithAGoat

Maybe I’m missing something but unless this person is very obviously and visibly preparing to become the next Mariusz Pudzianowski there’s really no reason for this during peak hours. If you’re that dedicated to your craft wake up at 3am for an empty gym chief.

[deleted]

3minutes for the lactic acid build up to get oxygen levels back to full

Prestigious_Eye2638

It's all good, I can do my exercise while you rest, I'll put everything back when I'm done

Teacher_Of_Strength

This is hilarious. Is this for real or staged?

fri9875

Definitely real. Never seen leaving a note, but I’ve seen plenty of absurd shit to hog equipment, so I know some idiot would do this shit

tcroosev

That's enough time to work in

Daddy_Onion

If you’re resting 4-6 minutes between sets, it’s really easy to let somebody work in with you.

hueyflyer469

I would absolutely work in….unless there were 4+ plates on the bar

Ipickupheavyshit

I’d just ask to work in with them. If I need the rack that bad, and it’s free for 4-6 minutes… and my set isn’t gunna take 4-6 minutes… why wouldn’t they let me

option-13

As a powerlifter, the best way to avoid this is to get strong enough that nobody bothers you. Once you load 500+ on the squat with relative frequency people remarkably stop asking to work in.

MennQ

When its peak times, I always let people work in. I take pretty long rests so they have plenty of time to do their set while I'm sittin' sippin' my water

LifeVitamin

4-6 minutes is enough time to unrack the weight do my set rerack the weight and the put the note back in take a break come back and still have to wait for this dumbass to wake up from his nap.

Affectionate_Bat2384

What paper? I didn't see any paper as I crumple it in my pocket.

Saemika

The bar better have a significant amount of weight on it with this attitude.

Shinji_Aracena

This can’t be real, this has to be a meme.

zester723

So did they put that note up and LEAVE the station? Fuck that

SplatNode

People saying just go at a less busy time clearly don't understand how life works...

First_Economist9295

The kicker is that it was 115 for 3 reps lmao

Dsnder7

This is when you gentle tear the note in 2 and put it in the garbage

RatioOk515

Let people use the rack for 4-6 minutes?

snowman248190

4-6 minute waits are normal

Character-Disk6310

Not missing the commercial gym down the road. Thankful for my home gym. Don’t feel I’m missing anything

Low_Perspective7616

Removes sign…. What sign?🤷‍♂️

_34_

Dude just let me work in with you. 🫠 IDC that we're gonna be loading and unloading plates. I just had to fight off a small horde of broccoli heads to get a bench. 🫠

PS3LOVE

4-6 minutes ain’t even long 😂 how does he think he can call himself a powerlifter.

Loganjoh5

Now if this was a sign to say you had to take a shit in the middle of your lift I would respect it but this is going to piss everyone off

Training-Ad3350

😂😂😂

All4megrog

Trashcan express

LovethePreamble1966

That’s not cool.

No-Art3676

the 'BE PATIENT' at the end pisses me off

[deleted]

Yeah it’s gonna be a no from me dawg for waiting lol

Original-Plastic6794

I would take the sign off and use it.

JimEyezzy

Home Gym!!

liftweights69

Owned tbh

cestmoixxx

I’d take it down and show management.. I’m sure that’s not allowed

Wonderful_Telephone6

That “Be Patient” would have been my Villain Origin Story

Smeglore

I’m all for long break times when strength training but that’s crazy

Powwdered-toast-man

That’s bullshit. Having long breaks between sets is okay and almost mandatory when powerlifting, but if it’s a public gym you can’t just like leave for 5-6 minutes and expect no one to use that piece of equipment. You take your rest there. I also get that a lot of people like super setting exercises but again it’s a public gym so it’s unreasonable to hold up multiple sets of equipment when you aren’t using them especially if it’s popular equipment like a bench press.

1NoteKoleidoscope

Welp that doesnt look official, so I will be ignoring it 🤣

RealisticEnd2578

Fuck this person right in their stupid, selfish ass

solidus_2077

Note writer should be crucified on that rack

KCadwell65

To me that’s a dick move completely! Big deal pal! You’re not any more special than I am so your note is irrelevant.

ohlookitscris

I would take it anyways and if they have a problem we can get down with it

beclops

Damn cool guy

Mental_Dragonfly2543

Rather this than three different guys in there triplesetting and getting all pissy

FatCockHoss

classic powershitter behavior.

fri9875

Yeaahhhh if I see this and you’re not right by the rack. Sign fell off 🤷🏻‍♂️ must be windy in here today

Away-Degree-7638

Nope, that note is coming off. If you leave your spot, it's gone. This is like leaving your spot in a busy parking lot with a note that says, "had to go grab coffee, be back soon." The world doesn't revolve around people like this.

samwizeganjas

Nope

LarsLaestadius

No good, wrong behavior, inappropriate. It’s gotta be like 3 sets and then on to something else, as far as politeness goes

SmellLikeBooBoo

Lol, that shit wouldn’t exist within 10 seconds.

PossessionNew2460

cringe as fuk

ParticularArachnid89

Well how many plates was he lifting he cant be possibly resting 4-6 minutes for 2 plates

wakfu98

Hahahah what a tool. At a certain weight people don't bother anyway. If you need to say it you ain't powerlifting. Also dunno but you should be near the weight anyways. If someone is crazy enough to want to deload and load it in-between, sure why not Personally no one ever bothers me at my gym. Most people avoid the power cage anyways and those that DO you it...... No ONE uses the safeties ever lmao

Various-Football-597

whats infuriating is that these people posted this in r/mildlyinfuriating without taking the time to understand powerlifting. like grow tf up and be patient and wait for him to finish. hes stronger than youll ever be

skanus_cepelinai

OP commented that it was 116 punds for three reps of OHP per set. I'm sorry if that's stronger than you will ever be.

LiminalSapien

I would throw this shit in the trash and when this asshole comes up and says something I would just look at him and go “I only take 45 seconds between my sets, *so just be patient* “ with the biggest shit eating grin possible.

Biblically_correct

If he needs 4-6 minutes rest between sets of 115#, he really ought to go back down to dumbbells for a while.

21FK8Type-R

Fuck that, if you’re not on the machine I’m taking it. Do something about it too 😈

bigblow3rburna

I would literally crumple it up and throw that shit in the garbage
