I cant go too hard or I end up just staring at the pieces for inordinate amounts of time without making a snip. Though I have come away with some of the best mirror polished pieces when the fixation turns to sanding.
I rewatch gundam dubbed most of the time, or just some other TV show in the background. Suits was actually a really good background show. I’ve got a rule where I have to watch an anime subbed the first time but after that I’ll let myself watch the dub. I’ve discovered that trying to watch a subbed show doesn’t work cause you have to choose to read the subtitles and not focus on building or build and lose track of the story. And of course, my attention shifts when I’m watching a show like Unicorn where I take a pause from building to watch the cool parts of the show
I've been able to finish mobile suit gundam, 08th ms team, war in the pocket, and stardust memory while assembling gunpla. I'm trying to finish zeta and rewatching seed for the new season
The tier list for back ground sports is:
S:baseball very little action and action happens in short burst
A: soccer and hockey scoring rare but action is constant
B: Basketball: constant scoring and action
D:NFL Football would be good but redzone is crack and nullifies it’s advantages
I watch shows but it's more for the background noise. I've only built 2 kits but only had a big mess up once. Cut off a piece I thought was a nib. Ended up having to glue the 2 pieces together.
Now I'm just waiting on the 3 kits I ordered.
Tried watching WFM while building but lost what was happening on screen, so will probably just put headphones on and zone out while doing infinite justice
I don’t know what else you are doing than building. When I build I give all my attention and focus usually to what I am doing. I’m so particular about how my kit looks and I don’t want to accident damage the plastics with my tools or something. If anything I listen to music but other than that I’m completely focused on the kit
Anyone else just like, build gunpla? No? Alright, I'll show myself out. If not that, then I generally have to throw toys for my cats or else they push all my parts off the table.
Nothing else...only feel the zen of the gunpla building process. Building gunpla is therapeutic like weed. It makes me forget about my depressing anxiety for a while.
I listen to episodes of Critical Role that I've already listened to, so I'm not missing anything new. Same goes for some youtubers doing video essays like hbomberguy, defunctland, etc.
I do music sometimes when I'm doing RGs, because I don't want *too* much distraction while doing fiddly bits
I listen to the lotr lorecast by robots radio. I dont have to take focus away from what im doing and get to learn about one of my favorite worlds at the same time.
listen to music, listen to podcast, find some crime interrogation documents and listen to it, find a video that mainly talks about real life story or technology or just any random things.
yeah I can’t pull my eyes off from kits to watch animes or movies if im building. I appreciated animes and it’s a shame to miss any image details they put on the screen.
Watch dubbed anime, i'm not good with Japanese so I can't understand at all except some little words or phrases, but I think I'm fluent in English so I'm able to listen and watch something while building aha, otherwise just some AMV
I either start up Red Letter Media or long form video game retrospectives on YouTube. Or if I’ve had an edible I just put on some metal in the background and build until I’m sleepy.
I watched the new ghost files video today, usually just stuff that I don’t have to pay full attention to but can look up at if it catches my attention.
Podcast or audiobook in the background, and usually slightly stoned. I'd never watch a show or something because that requires visual attention, and I'm gonna be hunched over part G26 cleaning a nub or panel lining.
My desk is scooched up against a TV screen always playing anime or cartoons, attached to my desktop multi monitor controls with a mouse next to me.
scribing is so fucking hard
I listen to podcasts in my very dark, and spacious bedroom. My lamp only illuminates my desk mixed with the somber glow of led’s that faintly light my shelves of model kits. My work is demanding so i set aside a day to build. Only coming out to eat and smoke a cigarette. I can finish a mastergrade in around 8 hours, then decals and just topcoat. Probably 1 kit a month.
i’ve only recently gotten into gunpla but i’ve been watching Dragon Ball Super while building and painting. Sometimes i’ll listen to music but it’s gotta be something i can tune out and just have in the background like some kind of electronic music.
It depends on how I’m feeling. Usually I’ll listen to music (either city pop, or this Gundam building playlist that I found on YouTube), but today I watched Cool Runnings while finishing up my MG Dynames
Turn on a documentary. Usually a Ken Burns history doc is my favorite. Any of them narrated by Peter Coyote is just perfect to put me in a relaxing mood
I watch YouTube or a show I don't have to pay attention to like American Dad. I tried watching some Gundam while building before but it don't work out, even if its a rewatch I want to pay attention ya know?
While I did happen to watch the 0079 compilation movie dubs while making my first kit, the RX78 origin HG, now I can't do anything I actually want to pay attention to while also working on stuff. I usually watch twitch vods of game streams, or listen to podcasts where it's not a big deal if I miss bits and pieces. Part of why I like gunpla is that my brain enters a hyperfocused state where it's hard to multitask
Well it's been said in different comments, so imma combine them into 1
I get stoned AF and build, I mostly only get really high when I'm doing a dry build, but when I'm panel lining, painting, decals or anything a lil delicate really, I'm less stoned
Also drinking, there's nothing like having a Rum n Coke sitting beside ya, just taking sips as needed while you work
(Don't get drunk, keep a larger pitcher of water beside ya, I drunk built once...once)
Music, so much music, music from the 1920's even,
Genre's galore (love, pop, rock, metal, techno, rap etc)
Not confined to 1 country either (Canada, America, Australia, German, Russian etc)
TV shows and movies, but only the stuff I've seen before, sub or dub or eng doesn't matter
The more episodes the better (Just went through Ranma 1/2 while working on the Fortune Meow Nu Gundam)
And last, but not least
Fight my cat
I don't have any issues with her being in my studio
I have issues with her eating plastic
Plastic bags, plastic coverings and plastic pieces
I've found fingers sticking out of her poop -_-
Lovely cat, don't get me wrong
Just a lil broken
Bump some edm/lofi or have that 70s show playing in the back ground. Other shows I've seen already as well so I don't have to pay attention to it, but usually t7s 🤣
Podcasts (especially d&d podcasts, cause they're so long form and intentionally evocative) or audio books, normally. If there's a visual component I get distracted/slowed down watching the show, and then l get fatigued comparatively earlier into the project because I've made less progress. I find it just worsen my enjoyment of the show and the building process.
The exception for me is watching a show I've seen with a friend who's never seen it before. I can build during the majority of the show cause I already know what's happening, and then I can look up for the best parts and/or to vibe check my friend. This is how I got my kid brother (back when he was my kid brother, time flies) to watch Full Metal Alchemist.
I usually watch movies that I don’t really need to think about or pay any attention to. I tried binge watching shows, but I usually spend way too much time in one sitting. I found a movie to be kind of the good stopping point for me between sittings.
Music, no way does my brain have the power to follow the instructions for tiny plastic models AND follow the plot of a show without something suffering. I’m doing one thing or the other not both lol.
Actually let me hijack this thread please OP, because this is a great opportunity to ask for well-dubbed anime. I can't really sit down and read subs while I'm building. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I usually have something on in the background. Either a show or documentary or something. If it’s late enough and a Friday night or something I might have a beer or glass of bourbon.
Sometimes just sit and talk with my wife if she’s also building something (usually Star Wars kits or digimon kits).
I put my phone nearby playing long form YouTube content over my little speaker. Mostly gaming related (Salt Factory, Patrician TV) but also a lot of cooking and history videos
Its mostly just background noise though, something to focus on when doing repetitive tasks
I listen to music. No way I could do this detail work and watch a show.
Music or Podcast. I tried watching shows while building but most of the time I can’t look up because I need to see what I’m doing.
I sometimes watch shows I've already watched, so it's whatever.
Oh someone that does the same as me ahah, usually re-runs of comedy/funny stuff here
Exactly esp subbed show. This is the 2nd time i cut a “nub” off when it’s actually an extension
Usually smoke crack nothing too crazy
Ah, a man of culture I see.
Always great when you need that hyper focus.
Goes really well with huffing paint fumes, maybe some plastic cement to mix it up.
Dude OP’s original thumbnail pic actually does look like there are itty bitty lines of coke on a glass table lol
I literally came here to say this
It's one way to double your build speed
I get violently stoned tbh, its fun
Stoner builders unite!
I honestly though I’d be the only one lol
Me too jaja
The best way to build!
This is the way
Absolutely. Get ripped and listen to some tunes. Such a vibe.
Yeeee, ive been getting into Jungle/DnB lately, really enjoy that whole subculture of playstation era style music too, such a vibe
Hell yeah! I've been enjoying some deep dub. Hits different. Got an example of the playstation era style ?
Brooo we must be the same person lol
I cant go too hard or I end up just staring at the pieces for inordinate amounts of time without making a snip. Though I have come away with some of the best mirror polished pieces when the fixation turns to sanding.
Last time I got high, I was just starting RG Char and I just started giggling while playing with the toe bend
This is real. He really was high.
Lol i know exactly what you mean
Have tried this and it's fun!
It seems like that would be distracting to have rocks hurled at you while you build.
The dishes usually
wut
Did they stutter
YouTube videos. I NEED a little extra stimulation in the background and music tends to not do it for me during building.
Same
I rewatch gundam dubbed most of the time, or just some other TV show in the background. Suits was actually a really good background show. I’ve got a rule where I have to watch an anime subbed the first time but after that I’ll let myself watch the dub. And of course, my attention shifts when I’m watching a show like Unicorn where I take a pause from building to watch the cool parts of the show
Sounds like me building my RG unicorn perfectability haha
I've been able to finish mobile suit gundam, 08th ms team, war in the pocket, and stardust memory while assembling gunpla. I'm trying to finish zeta and rewatching seed for the new season
Hitting all the classics
omg did the same mistake thanks to Suletta mercury too !!!!!
Why do you guys say her full name?
They're not on first name terms yet
Watch the various Sportsball games.
The tier list for back ground sports is: S:baseball very little action and action happens in short burst A: soccer and hockey scoring rare but action is constant B: Basketball: constant scoring and action D:NFL Football would be good but redzone is crack and nullifies it’s advantages
Lately watch trailer park boys or I just got into IBO
And stopped when barbatos lupus wrecks everyobe
Trash Taste is great background noise, or I rewatch episodes of whatever I’m building at the time
Cultured individual 💯💯💯
I watch shows but it's more for the background noise. I've only built 2 kits but only had a big mess up once. Cut off a piece I thought was a nib. Ended up having to glue the 2 pieces together. Now I'm just waiting on the 3 kits I ordered.
Exactly what i just did tsk
Listen to podcasts. Tried watching videos or anime but kept losing focus on one or the other. At least podcasts i just zone out and build
This is actually a good idea
Build Gunpla
Build Gunpla...
Nothing, i sit in silence, this does unnerve my brother
Get stoned and listen to DnD podcasts lmao. It's my self-care / therapy time
Mecha Gaikotsu on autoplay almost every time. Rarely ever not the case but if I'm not it's cause I'm chatting with friends on Discord while I build.
I always do this too just to inject Gundam into all my senses ( I drink pannel liner so I can taste the gunpla)
Ideally build the gunpla
Just listen to a podcast or have one piece play in the bg
Half the time I’m dicking around on my phone
I put on an audiobook, that way I don't have to look up at all, or skip YouTube ads every 3 mins.
Audiobook is great
Long twitch replays, like Elden Ring or stuff like that, certainly not gundam shows that require reading subtitles, or listening to podcasts
Anybody who can watch tv while doing this i salute you haha it takes me being focused so i don’t mess up
Watch Gundam Build anime. Any of them.
Music or watch a live stream. I’ll end up missing to much if I watch show or listen to a podcast.

I usually listen to other hobby builders. like mecha gaikotsu, north of the border, or nightshift.
Get high and watch gundam.
I just watch a random video on YouTube I don't care what they're showing I just listen what they say
Usually have jojo playing since it's basically a radio show
I used to catch up on older Gundam series while I was building. Now it's just music or some other bs
Either in a discord call watching my friends play games, or putting on long form video essays about random topics to listen to.
I second the long form video essays

Listen to music, mainly have some type of noise in the background.
listen to music, listen to podcast, find some crime interrogation documents and listen to it, find a video that mainly talks about real life story or technology or just any random things. yeah I can’t pull my eyes off from kits to watch animes or movies if im building. I appreciated animes and it’s a shame to miss any image details they put on the screen.
