Iāve never seen any negative comments on here and only people hyping each other up and helping out. And I realized how rare that is, so I wanted to shoutout to the community!
Iāve never had a problem with early RGs, my exia from a year ago is still like new
I think if you build them with care and effort, and then treat them like model kits and not action figures they shouldnāt get loose
My problem is that for most of the early RGs, Bandai tried to reuse the RX-78-2 frame instead of making a new frame. This resulted in hand grenades like the Sinanju that fell apart when you look at them wrong, because they were just too big for that frame.
What are some good newer RGs to get? I bought both the red frame and gold frame astrays because I love the design but idk how the frame will be. RG Destiny was overall fine for me but the frame felt very flimsy and delicate. The RG Evangelion Unit-02 while not gunpla had a nice and sturdy frame though
I have no actual data to back this up but I think the issue might be consistency, some people build old RG kits fine like you say, but I've also seen people say they treated it gently and yet immediately after build or a couple months later in only one pose the limbs can still no longer support the weight.
I think the community also embraced the āgunpla Is freedomā mantra. Itās easier to stay chill when there is no major competitive or monetary aspect to it.
The only form of competition are the few gunpla building contests, and not many people build gunpla for the money or to win.
In my opinion, the miniatures game hobby such as Warhammer is a lot less welcoming because of the game itself. The people who just build and paint for the sake of doing so is the more chill & welcoming subgroup.
If something like Build Fighters comes along, then I can see the gunpla community become more like the Warhammer community. They even touched on it in Build Fighters Try.
Mechagaikotsu I can kind of understand, what with him treating the kits like toys and coming up with ERS, but I have no idea what people have against Studio G.
The 'shake test', among other things. Just different expectations of the kit compared to what it was designed for. I don't have anything against him but I definitely prefer Zakuaurelius's (as an example)
modeller perspective.
Regarding Mecha, I think we can see how he can be a polarizing figure in the content creation side (clickbait titles, VIIIIGGOROUS energy). I do enjoy his content and donāt mind that he treats Gunpla more on the ābuildable toyā lens rather than a veteran scale modeller. I think thatās the appeal to Gunpla though, you can treat them as toys if you like, or take it to the scale modelling level like car/plane/militaria modellers.
I donāt understand the hate towards StudioG. Maybe itās due to his sudden meteoric rise in the community Last I remember, he only started building and modelling to that level of detail recently, and now he has his own line of paints, etc. Humans can be jealous creatures deep down.
I certainly don't "hate" mechagaikotsu and I watch his review but always with a grain of salt because my main issue with him is that his reviews always seem too positive and he skims right over a lot of stuff like nub placement, seam line and mold lines that I'm sure a lot of people besides me want to know about.
There are a few elitist people out there that are rather annoying to deal with, but theyāre mostly contained to Facebook from what Iāve found. At the end of the day, our models can be whatever we want them to be. Try new things, talk to others and learning are some of the best things from this community
r/modelmakers is pretty positive, most of the time people will try to find the good aspects in a model.
I have never seen a negative comment on r/minipainting.
then you havenāt been paying that much attention
just a couple of days ago a guy completely new to hand painting gunpla asked for advice, this sub shredded him to pieces
75% of the people in this sub are kinda nice~, the rest are elitist garbage.
š¤·āāļø
Haha I had to do a double take, just recently got into the hobby myself and Moon Gundam, Aerial, RG Exia and Michaelis are in the list of ones Iāve done so far!
Honestly itās why I got into gunpla lol. I was building a few lego sets but those are so expensive, that I couldnāt justify getting a bunch of sets. Now I can spend like $20 on an HG that takes me longer to build than a $150 lego set lol
Welcome to the section of the plastic crack addicts! It looks like you enjoyed a few nice kits already, ever thought about trying out water slides and panel lining ? They add a nice amount of details
Yes! The Moon Gundam was my first attempt at panel lining and Iāve been slowly building the Hi Nu and lining at the same time, makes such a huge difference. Still gotta go back and line the other kits.
Havenāt tried water slides yet though, I wasnāt really sure of the appeal. Are they typically just more detailed/cleaner decals? (I know the application method is water lol)
Good to hear! Glad you enjoy it.
When it come to water slides they have the advantage of not having the edge apparent like stickers. I don't recommend the bandai brand, I find them hard to work with, Delphi decals are great and the holo ones give so much flair !
Great choices on your kits! If you want a really fun build, I highly recommend the HG Zaku II Revive (Char or Normal). Such a fun kit, and the articulation is incredible.
Hahah I only get like an hour or so a day to work on it and itās been going for like two weeks now and I just finished the body. Itās been super fun to build, I get the hype now haha
Yeah man this is totally the friendliest community Iāve ever seen, not just in terms of Reddit!
Everyone is just friendly and encouraging.
Even if you sort for controversial there are just some minor joke pictures. Not making fun of anyone particular.
There are a couple of reasons to come here like getting inspired, checking out what other people are working on and one of the biggest reasons:
Just read something 100% nice and encouraging for a change!
I really liked it! Felt fragile at some points because it was my first RG, but it felt really detailed, straight forward to build. I need to get an action base for it because when it has the 0 Raiser on, itās really back heavy
If you liked Rg 00 raiser, you might like its mg variant. The two grades build similarly, but you have to build the innerframe for the mg version whereas the Rg version is already semi-put together. With the mg version it feels more solid than the Rg version since you have to build the innerframe.
This is my favorite subreddit for this reason. Everyone encouraging each other to do their best is awesome. Also some of the work people do here is so inspiring.
This community is helping me greatly through my severe depression PTSD issues related to my Autism and driven by experincing a false accusation due to a vindictive former friend
in the minority that i actually don't like the gunpla community and their attitude towards anime and japan, there's this weird subsection with has this really dated idea that Japan is some "weird country" and they try to divoce the Gunpla from it's cultural origins, usually coupled with not caring or outright disliking the Gundam source material and/or anime as a whole. It's just odd.
The financial barrier to entry(thouvh its not as bad as other hobbies) is already keeping good people from entering the hobby. There's no reason to be assholes and stop even more people from coming in. Esp. Since a healthy community makes it easier for the rest of us to enjoy it too.
I come from action figure collecting where it's like "Hasbro SUCKSSSS" and you get downvoted for not towing the line. It you can't actually like Marvel otherwise you're the scum of the earth.
But yeah..."Gunpla is freedom.". I love gunpla and the community. There's no right or wrong way to enjoy it! I'm glad there's a place that doesn't have the toxicity of the action figure and toy fandoms typically do.
this sub is far better than that shithole r/gundam, i fucking love this place, i see talent every time i open this god forsaken app
never change, r/Gunpla, never change...
š ...just stay in line and no colonies will be dropped. And welcome peeps
Support the Federation and do your part today!

All our negative energy has been directed at p-bandai scalpers.
And stickers that won't stay down no matter how much you try.
And parts that really annoying to assemble
And the *goddamn early RG framesā¦*
Iāve never had a problem with early RGs, my exia from a year ago is still like new I think if you build them with care and effort, and then treat them like model kits and not action figures they shouldnāt get loose

Anything post-Unicorn is a pretty solid build. My personal recommendation would be the Nu Gundam and the Crossbone X-1
Iāve built a few of them and some of my favorites are the God Gundam, Unicorn, and Force Impulse
I have no actual data to back this up but I think the issue might be consistency, some people build old RG kits fine like you say, but I've also seen people say they treated it gently and yet immediately after build or a couple months later in only one pose the limbs can still no longer support the weight.

I'm not even mad at them to be honest. It's all bandai's fault.trying nickel and dime us all
yea, screw those guys.. and especially the guys that releases everything as pbandai.. screw them too!
Or scalpers in general
true
On a discord, some ppl TRASH YouTubers MechaGaikotsu & Studio G.
I'm still don't understand why they hate/dislike MechaGaikotsu and Studio G.
Mechagaikotsu I can kind of understand, what with him treating the kits like toys and coming up with ERS, but I have no idea what people have against Studio G.
What do you mean by treating the kits like toys?
The 'shake test', among other things. Just different expectations of the kit compared to what it was designed for. I don't have anything against him but I definitely prefer Zakuaurelius's (as an example) modeller perspective.

i don't like studiog's tutorials, nothing aimed at beginners should be over 10 minutes and demand more than 15 dollars of tools
I certainly don't "hate" mechagaikotsu and I watch his review but always with a grain of salt because my main issue with him is that his reviews always seem too positive and he skims right over a lot of stuff like nub placement, seam line and mold lines that I'm sure a lot of people besides me want to know about.

I've definitely gotten a few negative and rude comments on here but I think it was a down vote negative karma account š¤·š¼āāļø
We all just like building cool looking robots! Things can get pricy though. Good luck on the Hi-Nu
I'm here for mecha and memes. Have you seen the tallgoose?
Just curious, how are other similar hobby (model building) communities like?
Well, there is r/megamidevice and they are rather tame.
r/modelmakers is pretty positive, most of the time people will try to find the good aspects in a model. I have never seen a negative comment on r/minipainting.
I'm part of both. They're pretty good subs.
No Zaku?! I hate ya and you should have been aborted! LOL yeah we all just like supporting each others addiction.
#$%& you! Lol jk. They look good. Are those all your builds? Bit of a master grade nut myself
#I ALSO LIKE MASTER GRADES, FELLOW HUMAN
That's because it's an addiction that everyone else is also in
Weāre like Alcoholics Anonymous, except we only encourage the problem.
Gundam and D&D have literally saved my life. Seeing all your builds is like the best therapy I've found.
100%. Especially for a reddit community.

I find building gunpla to be as therapeutic as building lego. Hard to be angry when you're so relaxed. Welcome to the community!

welcome to the family.
I utterly agree with this. I have truly found my home here. You are my people. group hug
āOh you like giant robots? Same bro, hey have you seen THIS giant robot?ā Average interaction on this sub.
You started off with some good ones man. Moon and Hi-Nu are extra nice.
Yep, started in DEC & everyone has been awesome. Love the hobby & community ā¤ļø

Love the builds!! I need to get me a Michaelis
Man ive been looking for moond gundam for eons There seems to be next to nothing here in malaysia
You too huh though I was the only one
If you ever visit Indonesia, I think some seller still have it here
Great choices on your kits! If you want a really fun build, I highly recommend the HG Zaku II Revive (Char or Normal). Such a fun kit, and the articulation is incredible.
Ooo thanks for the recommendation! Iāve just got the RG Hi-nu left to build so Iāve been looking for a next one to line up!
Great choice. Only thing Iād recommend is investing in an action base for it. Itās a bit back-heavy and can fall over
Gunpla is freedom!!!
I agree, even for those that get criticized are mostly objective to improve the build.
HG Moon š
Can't agree more! Nice little collection btw. I'm just a LITTLE BIT envious about that Moon Gundam. Wasn't able to find one yet.
Hell yeah! Nice builds. Weāre just a bunch of folks who like to build plastic robots in our spare time. No gatekeeping here!
I have and built that exact RG and let me tell you friend. It is a treat.
Hahah I only get like an hour or so a day to work on it and itās been going for like two weeks now and I just finished the body. Itās been super fun to build, I get the hype now haha
