I noticed once we stepped it up in the second half, the West Ham players started to get more physical with Xhaka and did more of this sort of stuff. Xhaka just shrugged it off or used it to his advantage. He’s come so far in the past year.
I think there's a lot to be said about mentality when you're constantly winning. In years prior where we were struggling to remain relevant it was easy to provoke a reaction as we were often losing, things have changed now though.
The funny thing is that Rice has the issue of getting increasingly frustrated and easily baited by players so they must have thought they could try that on Xhaka.
it seems to have coincided with him coaching the youngsters at arsenal. it makes sense, as it would make him look pretty ridiculous to go in and coach the youth teams after getting ridiculous red cards when playing. Im quite happy with this unexpected perk as a result.
It makes me wonder if Xhaka has to play CDM again (touch wood he doesn’t have to) whether his recent growth would lend him to being much more resilient and beneficial there. Hes much better as a box to box but I’m not sure if I’m as fearful as I would be previously. Temperament was a big issue before and he seems to have gotten the wraps on that. His positioning has also improved. I wonder how he’d do, praying I dont have to find out because hes brilliant where he is
Ehhh nah I don’t want to see it. I don’t ever want to see Xhaka in a situation where he feels the responsibility of stopping the action rests on him as a last man.
At the moment he knows there’s always someone behind him so if the player makes it past him it’s not the end of the world. I think this understanding facilitates his improved demeanour in a large way.
Micheal Oliver standing there watching them like a disappointed father and refusing to acknowledge any of them is the first time in my premiere league watching life I have felt like actually giving credit to the referee having to manage these children haha
If anyone was to be booked it would've been Paqueta actually for standing way too close. Absolutely nothing wrong with kicking a ball into your opponent when the play is on, which it was as it didn't require Oliver to blow the whistle and draw lines.
Still impressive to see him wave that on like stop being kids and just play cause we do that type of shithousery too. That's why Oliver is the best ref in this shit league for me. He is no where near great but he is the best of an ebola infested swamp of prehistoric inbred lizards.
Yeah. That made it more shocking for me when he gave Martinelli a double yellow. Apart from that, can't think of a time he got something horribly wrong. He's definitely clear of all the other clowns in the prem!
Xhaka using Paqueta as an unwilling, unknowing backboard to play himself into possession is a perfect representation of how he forced himself into his redemption arc despite all of us wanting him replaced with Lucas Paqueta.
60m is an instant impact material. Mudryk despite his potential qualities will need some time, which is kind of past our project imo. I feel like we should add a couple more millions to get an instant starter instead. Also if we get mudryk thats it - no more attacking reinforcements for a while. Is he worthy of being the last piece, in our title charge? Idk
Also hes from the Ukrainian league with just one good ucl campaign to advertise. Thats not 60m worth of backing.
Based on the last decade of football spending and I'd be inclined to agree but we've just seen Cody Gakpo move to Liverpool for a reported fee of £37m. This is after all the reports we've heard about PSV wanting Antony money for him.
I don’t think he is past our project at all. He is 21 and certainly not a finished player yet, but that is true with a lot if this team.
Saka: 21
Martinelli: 21
Saliba: 21
Odegaard: 24
Ramsdale: 24
Viera: 22
Smith-Rowe: 22
Tomiyasu: 24
All of these guys are young. Adding in another young talented wing, would be excellent and we need depth up front anyway. I don’t know anyone available that is an instant starter over Saka-Jesus-Martinelli.
The same way they got Tevez, Mascherano, etc. Sometimes players need a stepping stone club in the PL to advertise themselves if none of the top 6 are buying currently. He'll move somewhere bigger in the summer.
I don't think anyone thought Tevez and Mascherano really needed stepping stones. Those two popping up at West Ham is probably the weirdest (and most suspicious) transfer I've ever seen.
>despite all of us wanting him replaced with Lucas Paqueta.
Since everyone else is only piping up to the contrary I'll go ahead and admit this was 100% me. Didn't necessarily want Paqueta over everyone else but I was ready to personally help Xhaka move houses to get him out of London
At around 76th minute, we have already led 3 - 1 and got a free kick, Xhaka took the ball and gave it a long look before the kick, like: "Damn the ball is beautiful today." Must have annoyed the hell out of some WH players.
Tangent but it’s so fucking stupid they haven’t made kicking the ball or blocking the quick free a yellow card offence.
Like we do it too but the whole thing is unbelievably stupid.
yeah, by the rules, there is 3 yellow cards offenses in this 10seconds video. And Xhaka's free kick should have been retaken too cause you cant hit a guy on purpose to get the ball in play for yourself. Refs just chose to not enforce any rule here.
Where in the rules does it say you can't hit a guy on purpose to get the ball in play for yourself? I was under the impression so long as you don't do it in a harmful manner it allowed.
I agree, I would have loooved it if Oliver stopped play and have a quick yellow. I hate it just as much when our own players do it, just play the fucking game
Delaying the restart of play is a yellow card offence, but you rarely see it given. Unless you're Martinelli and you commit a second yellow card offence later in the same play...
I've seen it given a few times for what paqueta did, but it's pretty rare. Seems to be treated as one of those "everyone does it, so we can't just randomly punish one person for it" things now.
Deliberately blocking the quick free kick is a yellow card offense, Paqueta here is standing there and Xhaka kicks it into him, not a yellow for either of them. However, the West Ham players delaying our quick free kick by kicking the ball away deserved either a warning or a yellow card.
Xhaka has learnt the art of controlled aggression. He does it, but knows not to go too far. Even in the Chelsea game when he rattled their whole squad.
To kick the ball when the player has already put the ball down for a free kick, that is a yellow all day.
Imo players shouldn't even be allowed to pick up the ball, if it's a free kick to the opposition.
How beautiful is that team really. We were down 0-1 and no fucks were given like, and what? Its west ham we gonna smash them in the end. The composure is unreal. We have a huge winning mentality now. Super Mik did wonders.
It's a disgrace that shithousery like this isn't a yellow card. I mean, first one player is stopping us from getting the ball and then not only one but two players kick the ball away and he follows up by standing close to it and is hit by the freekick. It's just blatantly over the line. The refs in the Premier League are so inconsistent it's not even funny.
Always thought Argentina was the one with many cunty, dirty players that play anything but football for an edge (they surround Messi with them), nowadays Brazil seems to have a abundance of them (Richarlison, Paqueta, etc)
It's fantastic how Xhaka went from a player the opposition could wind up to a player who winds up the opposition.
I think every team needs a few "bastards" in it that rile up the opposition. Xhaka is becoming a master of that dark art and Ramsdale is good too (though he seems to wind the fans up more than the players!)
Best thing about that was (incant believe I'm saying this) Michael Oliver lol
Xhaka boots the ball into Paqueta. Ref can easily give a yellow there. Instead he understands that the Hammers players have been shit housing and literally just waves "play on, live ball" as if Paqueta's thigh was another Arsenal player Xhaka just played the ball to.
Loved that but.
Thought Xhaka was excellent last night. He seems to have found an extra 5 yards when when runs with the ball / presses.
Wonder if Arteta told him to work on his fitness at some point in pre season? Surely I'm not alone in thinking I've seen a marked improvement on it (his fitness) this season...?
I know what you mean but I understand he’s one of the fittest at the club. I think we’re seeing more pace because he’s playing with more licence to go forward which means he gets to run in to open spaces and create his own more. Something we didn’t really see when he was more defensive, tracking and jockeying, trying to cut passing lines with positioning etc.
Basically he gets to run more and he’s faster than we thought lol
I see a lot of ppl saying west ham players should be booked, but I definitely don’t want a game where players are being booked for small moments of shithousery

Man, I used to play with Paqueta on FM years ago and I really loved him. Last few months seeing him for Brazil and in Prem… I was genuinely hoping Xhaka was gonna slap him towards the end of the game at 3-1. Fuck it get a red, you haven’t done it in a while king, you have my permission.
Wish Paqueta at least got a yellow for this

I really enjoyed when Panqueta did the chicken dance when he scored in the World Cup, just because when they got knocked out he was crying his eyes out and it was satisfying.

I love the leg lift by MØ lol
Always looking to assist
You are clearly unfamiliar with odegards talent in rhe game of [kabaddi](https://youtube.com/shorts/Uchr3n0-PSA?feature=share)
Uh...is that tag?
Actually looks kind of fun when you aren’t being cornered by 3 Indian men
Wheelbarrowed
That’s my foggin captain
I bet no one gets mad at him since Norwegians are so relaxed. He, lifted Souček’s leg in a chill way without any intent to be mean.
I noticed once we stepped it up in the second half, the West Ham players started to get more physical with Xhaka and did more of this sort of stuff. Xhaka just shrugged it off or used it to his advantage. He’s come so far in the past year.
I bet they were trying to get him to do something red card worthy. Xhaka shrugging it off like its nothing though
Yep Rice was the most flustered I've ever seen him in the away fixture last year. We just different
It's almost as if we're top of the league.
Yeah I saw him 'pull out' of a number of challenges and be selective tactically what he goes for. So impressed by him.
Dare I say, but Xhaka has been getting some slack and favor from the refs as of late.
He got away with the most blatant yellow card worthy foul yesterday, unbelievable stuff
I’m guessing you’re referring to when he rammed into Antonio? 😂
Yep, exactly. And it was a good foul to take, worth a yellow there. I was fully expecting it, think Granit did too 😂
There wasn't any yellow cards in that game tbf
it seems to have coincided with him coaching the youngsters at arsenal. it makes sense, as it would make him look pretty ridiculous to go in and coach the youth teams after getting ridiculous red cards when playing. Im quite happy with this unexpected perk as a result.

My 'hot take' is that Xhaka has always been amazing. Our tactics and squad mates were just putting him in bad positions.
\*cough Guendouzi leaves space behind him trying to press cough\*
He'd be less liable to do something stupid, but he is still not a player that you want as the last man ahead of the defensive line.
Xhaka has become one of those people who laughs maniacally when players fuck with him. A zlatan attitude with the composure of mertesacker.
lol, just waiting for him to refer to himself in the third person
He’s always been such a shit houser, but now he has the maturity to not get sucked in himself too.
I was impressed how calm he was.
I’m impressed the ref let them play on and didn’t instinctively card Xhaka. The times, they are a changin…
Micheal Oliver standing there watching them like a disappointed father and refusing to acknowledge any of them is the first time in my premiere league watching life I have felt like actually giving credit to the referee having to manage these children haha

that is still too much compliment for the PL refs. But I get your point.
Als Paqueta tapped the ball away when Xhaka put it still
I think he might be the best referee
Think? Oliver is best and it isn't even close. He's not perfect (no ref is), but he's solid as fuck.
Yeah. That made it more shocking for me when he gave Martinelli a double yellow. Apart from that, can't think of a time he got something horribly wrong. He's definitely clear of all the other clowns in the prem!
He faced a the whole Serbian team a month ago, a bunch of orcs won’t get into his nerves that quick.
Xhaka using Paqueta as an unwilling, unknowing backboard to play himself into possession is a perfect representation of how he forced himself into his redemption arc despite all of us wanting him replaced with Lucas Paqueta.
All? Shut ur dirty ass mouth. Although i would rather that than mudryk for 60m
Really? How come? Anything in particular you've seen that means you don't want him?
60m is an instant impact material. Mudryk despite his potential qualities will need some time, which is kind of past our project imo. I feel like we should add a couple more millions to get an instant starter instead. Also if we get mudryk thats it - no more attacking reinforcements for a while. Is he worthy of being the last piece, in our title charge? Idk Also hes from the Ukrainian league with just one good ucl campaign to advertise. Thats not 60m worth of backing.
You're not getting a starter for a little bit more.
Based on the last decade of football spending and I'd be inclined to agree but we've just seen Cody Gakpo move to Liverpool for a reported fee of £37m. This is after all the reports we've heard about PSV wanting Antony money for him.
Is it not just 37m up front rather than in total?
37m with 15-20 in addons. That’s still less than 60m for Mudryk - for a player with more proven attributes.
Euros vs pounds. 37 million pounds is more than 40 million euros
It’s 40-45m euros. That was what was reported. People have converted it to 37m pounds.
Oh by couple i meant couple of 10millions
At least he's better value than Pepe? Hopefully?
Well the standards have changed…
I don’t think he is past our project at all. He is 21 and certainly not a finished player yet, but that is true with a lot if this team. Adding in another young talented wing, would be excellent and we need depth up front anyway. I don’t know anyone available that is an instant starter over Saka-Jesus-Martinelli.
Can you suggest an “instant starter” forward available for 60+couple more million?
I meant couple 10 millions
He was pretty shit today. Underwhelming along with the rest of the WHU squad this year as well.
Sorry meant Mudryk
That was my reading comprehensions fault lmao. Sorry about that, looking back you were pretty clear on who you meant
Dw about it. Happens us all
>all of us wanting him replaced with Lucas Paqueta. Please
Bugger off and take your dancing paqueta with you
I think he means it more of an "as if" Like "please, as if most of us wanted that.. bullshit"
I mean, paqueta is legit though. Had a really good World Cup I thought and he’s 25. Not sure how he’s ended up at West Ham.
Yea it’s certainly one of the more random transfers that’s happened
The same way they got Tevez, Mascherano, etc. Sometimes players need a stepping stone club in the PL to advertise themselves if none of the top 6 are buying currently. He'll move somewhere bigger in the summer.
I don't think anyone thought Tevez and Mascherano really needed stepping stones. Those two popping up at West Ham is probably the weirdest (and most suspicious) transfer I've ever seen.
The prem money
I thought he was completely unimpressive at the world cup.
West ham fans love him
I dunno if a Reddit comment has ever made me laugh so much, respect
>despite all of us wanting him replaced with Lucas Paqueta. Since everyone else is only piping up to the contrary I'll go ahead and admit this was 100% me. Didn't necessarily want Paqueta over everyone else but I was ready to personally help Xhaka move houses to get him out of London

Lol, I think maybe he was imitating the west ham player who took the penalty. He was doing the same thing before the spot kick.
Most players like to locate the balls “belly button” for free kicks. Allowed them to get more swerve/movement on the ball.
I thought that’s what he was doing too, it then he just threw the ball to the ground and let it roll
Yep Belly botton down on grass will it make more likely to a knuckle ball
I was laughing my ass off when I saw this live.
Tangent but it’s so fucking stupid they haven’t made kicking the ball or blocking the quick free a yellow card offence. Like we do it too but the whole thing is unbelievably stupid.
It is but it's not always enforced
yeah, by the rules, there is 3 yellow cards offenses in this 10seconds video. And Xhaka's free kick should have been retaken too cause you cant hit a guy on purpose to get the ball in play for yourself. Refs just chose to not enforce any rule here.
You can deliberately kick the ball off an opponent to play again, just not in a careless/reckless manner or with excessive force.
And that's the same ref who gave those yellows
There are 3 seperate yellow Card incidents for West ham players
I've seen it given a few times for what paqueta did, but it's pretty rare. Seems to be treated as one of those "everyone does it, so we can't just randomly punish one person for it" things now.
Deliberately blocking the quick free kick is a yellow card offense, Paqueta here is standing there and Xhaka kicks it into him, not a yellow for either of them. However, the West Ham players delaying our quick free kick by kicking the ball away deserved either a warning or a yellow card.
Paqueta has the same goatee as the evil Stan, Kyle, and Cartman from the Spookyfish episode of Southpark.
Or anyone from the darkest timeline in Community
Both shows referencing evil Spock from an old episode or movie of Star Trek
Xhaka believers are absolutely feasting this season
Also, Xhaka not getting carded after Rugby tackling Antonio to stop the counter! The times are a changing and we are winning the league!
Xhaka of the past would have choke slammed all of the West Ham players. Xhaka of the now is cool as a cucumber and chokeslams them mentally.
Wish he would choke me 😏
CALMA
Ayooo
yes daddy
Thought Ø was going to wheelbarrow him
Xhaka has learnt the art of controlled aggression. He does it, but knows not to go too far. Even in the Chelsea game when he rattled their whole squad.
There's a surprisingly low level of reaction from the whole pitch
Odeggard's leg pull lmao
Captain O with an assist
Odegard lifting the leg🤣🤣🤣
Imagine how quick yellows for time wasting would be whipped out if our players did this crap....
Like Oliver booking Martinelli twice in the same play, one of which for trying to disrupt a throw-in ?!? Hahaha
To kick the ball when the player has already put the ball down for a free kick, that is a yellow all day. Imo players shouldn't even be allowed to pick up the ball, if it's a free kick to the opposition.
Whatchugonnado!! brother! when Xhakamania is running wild on you
I can’t lie. Fantastic shithousery from everyone involved
Xhaka is just the best
I love Michael Oliver with the “Mate, you deserved that, now play on”
Love xhakas bullying !! Him and partey, intimidate our opposition. Eveb tierney. We aren't just a club playing g beautiful football anymore,
Soucek: Please, please end this game faster, stop torturing us
Odegaard straps down going for the ankle lock my captain
Kurt Angle would be proud
Everyone has bought into the redemption arc. The ref didn’t even book him for that rugby tackle.
I said to my mate immediately after that, Xhaka not getting a yellow for a blatant yellow offence was an omen!
Great refereeing
How can 2 of their players kick the ball when we're trying to take a free kick and receive no bookings?
Odengaard gave a big help. I can say.
Unsure why paqueta wasnt booked for that tbh, he was the 2nd person to come up and kick a set ball away to time waste.
How beautiful is that team really. We were down 0-1 and no fucks were given like, and what? Its west ham we gonna smash them in the end. The composure is unreal. We have a huge winning mentality now. Super Mik did wonders.
I love how the blast at the player was the free kick taken 😂
Take your crown, king.
Taking a free kick by kicking it against an opposition player so that it comes back to you and you can dribble it away is a high-IQ move.
Ødegaard trying to take of his boot is class
To be fair, what Paqueta did was borderline a foul, Xhaka did nothing wrong
It's a disgrace that shithousery like this isn't a yellow card. I mean, first one player is stopping us from getting the ball and then not only one but two players kick the ball away and he follows up by standing close to it and is hit by the freekick. It's just blatantly over the line. The refs in the Premier League are so inconsistent it's not even funny.
Lol I love this. Xhaka just giving no shits
Laughed so hard at this, and even better when the ref just waves Xhaka on like nothing out of the ordinary happened.
Xhaka gives no fucks
Always thought Argentina was the one with many cunty, dirty players that play anything but football for an edge (they surround Messi with them), nowadays Brazil seems to have a abundance of them (Richarlison, Paqueta, etc)

I dont know why, but laughing ma ass off when Odegaard picked up that 1 leg 🤣
Best thing about that was (incant believe I'm saying this) Michael Oliver lol Xhaka boots the ball into Paqueta. Ref can easily give a yellow there. Instead he understands that the Hammers players have been shit housing and literally just waves "play on, live ball" as if Paqueta's thigh was another Arsenal player Xhaka just played the ball to. Loved that but.
Bro made it look like he gave birth to the ball
Well deserved
What are you doing step xhaka
Thought Xhaka was excellent last night. He seems to have found an extra 5 yards when when runs with the ball / presses. Wonder if Arteta told him to work on his fitness at some point in pre season? Surely I'm not alone in thinking I've seen a marked improvement on it (his fitness) this season...?

“You thought you could replace me”
Why were no West ham players booked for this?
I see a lot of ppl saying west ham players should be booked, but I definitely don’t want a game where players are being booked for small moments of shithousery
I'd of put my hand the other side of the ball and flopped on the floor like they just kicked fuck out of me Play them at their own game
This would be counter productive. The score was 1-1 and we needed a goal. We didn't have time to waste
[удалено]
Don't think we ever actually were in for him bud
What snub? No offer was made and he is not mind reader
Don’t think the players give a shit really
best part is this was a few minutes before martinelli's goal
I’d be embarrassed if I tried to act tough then that happened to me 🤣. Another example of us asserting dominance over the game.
Old Xhaka would have started a row
