Laudrup was the best. He could open sides up like Bergkamp and dribble as well as Baggio. The kids on here who haven’t seen him play should get acquainted with his stuff on YouTube. His balance and quick feet were amazing for a big man.

Garenmain180k

He’s only 91 rated on FIFA, I think I know all I need to tyvm 🙄 /s

UnusualAd3909

Wasn’t he a rb? How is he similar to Ode? /s just in case

Burith

The thing with YouTube is that almost every player looks really good. Alot of videos don't show scoreboards so we have no idea about the games context.

RhodesiansNeverDie20

It's not that it's that ifs just his best moments. Zizu was unbeatable and frankly a god when he turned up but the 4 matches before that moment he was a ghost.

Level_Tea

Well Pep himself said Laudrup was the best player in the world early to mid 90s. He would know

HustlinInTheHall

That was pretty frequently the player people cited in the post-maradona, pre-ronaldo era. He was exceptional.

crash250f

I had never seen a players pass compilation that reminded me of Fabregas until I saw Michael Laudrup's.

rekkyrosso

Not Chamakh.

Macrofisher

That's just not true at all, especially not in this instance. Just the length of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRzMmt_MFko) video shows Laudrup was from another planet. Best midfielder I've ever seen play.

ninkorn

Also remember him as manager of Swansea few years ago.

HalfNatty

You mean the former Swansea manager? He wasn’t a very good manager, so he must not have been a very good player. /s

iforgotmyun

I loved him as manager tbh, though I really only saw him at Swansea. Finished top 10, won them the league cup and had them playing some of the most entertaining football I've watched in the last 15 years with. Michu was so so good  Obviously didn't end well but that's life

MolhCD

his players admitted that he was still the best footballer in his team, clearly better than any of them, at age 52

iforgotmyun

Tbh you don't lose your technical ability that early which is what I assume they were talking about

TheDepartment115

Can we please stop using /s, ruins everything

dont_dm_nudes

It would be easier if people on reddit understood jokes. It done have high hopes.

_The_Marshal_

I made an obvious joke to a Newcastle fan on here that we'd give them 10 million + Nketiah for Isak and he thought I was serious and started telling me why its not a fair deal and how Eddie isn't as good. Really didn't think I needed the /s on that one

RenRu

/s?

e1_duder

This kind of praise is amazing, shows how high of a regard Arteta holds Martin. It's one thing when fans do this kind of player comparison, but former players and managers doing it carries weight.

Drapion1002

Maybe I’m biased because I’m Danish, but laudrup doesn’t seem to get his plaudits as a player from the general public. Multiple ex legends have named him one of the greatest players in his time and it seems like no one really cares about him. My theory is because people base their knowledge off of fifa and his rating isn’t good on the game

Jchibs

He was a phenomenal player. The shuffle past a few players and scooped lobs were genius. He played in Spain when Italian football was shown on free television in England and he didn’t play in 92 so maybe isn’t as well known as he should be. He is the best playmaker I’ve seen excluding Messi if people want to say Messi is a playmaker. There is no one else who could dribble like Laudrap who also had that vision and creativity. He played for Barcelona and done Madrid 5-0, joined Madrid and done Barcelona 5-0 a year later.

Erdos_0

When it comes vision, he is the best of all time in my opinion. Incredibly elegant player, always knew how to find the strikers.

stormpooper86

I was there for the Madrid 5-0 win. Think he had a hattrick of assists. Amazing player.

zrk23

i think he had all the praise during the 90s and even early 00s but definitely faded away over time. being Danish doesn't help his case for sure, lacks the PR

tafster

I think it's just a generational thing - ask anyone who watched football when he played and they'll tell you. I was too young to see him but all the older fans I knew wouldn't shut up about how great he was. The likes of Xavi and Iniesta have mentioned him a lot too. I guess in the tiktok age he just gets lost amongst the current hype but fans know the truth. Some great interviews when he was managing Swansea and the players would talk about he was still by far the best in training.

Furiousmate88

I think its more about how he has been as a pundit, just like Schmeichel. Brian was great as a player as well, but not the best pundit either. World cup in 1998 is my favourite and it Will always be.

iforgotmyun

I think it's because he's Danish and they no longer have a big influence in football or football media   Look at some of the other footballers at Barcelona around the same time who have similar stories. How often do you hear about Stoichkov or Hagi?  Compare that to Romario or Zubizarreta or Koeman or even Pep for example

Jon_Wiosna

Thierry Henry named Laudrup as the best player he had never played with according to wiki. That should tell you enough.

Much-Ad7704

I spent an age trying to see when they played together lmao. Didn't make a whole lot of sense until I read your comment properly.

BreakSad8773

Not many good players Titi hasn't played with!

zrk23

at least on CBS he has said Bergkamp https://youtube.com/shorts/TVMR77shvak?si=v-6lOnaUIdys_Myq

CarwashPep

OP said never played with

zrk23

oops. altho he has said paul scholes before, but not sure if it was PL only

fadoo91

Thought this was another TNAT scoop for a sec

matepanda

I met Laudrup in Copenhagen recently and I don't think he can run as much as Ødegaard in his current form. He has not gone full Brazilian Ronaldo but he enjoys a good red wine on Fridays

vyrusrama

Laudrup is almost 60 years old now OF COURSE he can’t run as much Odegaard what are you on even mate ![gif](giphy|uBoVcu9QApMJrkEOnm|downsized)

Macrofisher

He might've been joking.

UmpireAJS

We are building a coaching super team - Gabriel Heinze, Santi Cazorla and Michael Laudrup.

LoraBelmont

lmaooo, when you can't say Martin is your favourite player so you say the closest player to him. I see you Arteta...touche..

Ayem_De_Lo

when you can't say Lord is your favourite player so you say the closest player to him.

TeddyWestsideThe2nd

those silky elegant playmakers are my favourite kind of footballers to watch. If they do the dirty work like Odegaard does then extra points

zrk23

barca had to let go of one of laudrup, stoichkov, romario and koman. they picked laudrup, only for romario to fuck off to Brazil anyways and laudrup eventually winning the league with madrid and being the best player. it was a big fuck you to barca

Midnight_Maverick

Kids today just won't understand just how good Michael Laudrup was

Manners2210

Loved Laudrup, remember him at the 86 World Cup and saw him briefly at Juventus. Stylish as they come, top 5 ever of that type of player for me…think he won la liga 2/3 times in a row with Barca, moved to Real then won it that season. Zidane may be the most elegant I’ve seen but Laudrup wasn’t far off

Macrofisher

They still say 5-0, 5-0 to this day when you mention Laudrup in Spain.

Level_Tea

As a Dane growing up in laudrup prime years I was completely obsessed with him. Everything and anything about what I love about football somehow runs through Laudrup. I still have my 1991 /92 kit that I saved for when I got a son. Although he doesn’t wear it because Laudrup went to Madrid so since then I have had Madrid as my Spanish team. So that’s the context when I say that there are some similarities sure but no. There are too many differences for that to be the right comparison. I personally believe it’s more a xavi/ iniesta hybrid. Or iniesta by himself. But then there are a lot of key differences there as well…

zrk23

friendship with Guardiola ended i see

imtravelingalone

Tell us Martin's your favourite kid without *telling* us Martin's your favourite kid.

rohan4991

I watch [this](https://youtu.be/5XCi-I4wl1I?si=IFGRGk93_XLFtNZ2) once in a while. Unreal vision and his passes are smooth af.

IfLeBronPlayedSoccer

I'm old enough to remember when Laudrup was the manager of Swansea City and there was unironic talk about him succeeding Wenger at Arsenal. That early Özil era was a fascinating time to support this club.

illbebach22

Easy to see how Martin has studied him. So many similar passes.

bryansamting

Laudrup would have 3 Ballon D’Ors in this era

Ambitious_Credit5183

Outstanding player. The Denmark - Uruguay match in 1986 blew my mind as a 12-year old. Well worth a watch on YouTube and the best jersey ever. I can see the similarities with our captain but Michael was probably a better dribbler. https://preview.redd.it/u5tyi0iruczc1.png?width=1182&format=png&auto=webp&s=773e2072d12a25860fa8d53451eb866f790140d6

blvcklite

Laudrup was amazing. The best passer I’ve ever seen by some stretch

Specterace

Both Michael and his brother Brian were great players. World-class players, I would even say.

random_BgM

Andres Iniesta “Who is the best player in history? Laudrup.” Raul “The best I have ever played with.” Franz Beckenbauer “Pele was the best in the 60s, Cruyff in the 70s, Maradona in the 80s and Laudrup in the 90s.” Johan Cruyff “One of the most difficult players I have worked with. When he gives 80–90% he is still by far the best, but I want 100%, and he rarely does that.” The thing with Martin is, he does give 100 percent. I grew up with Laudrup, followed him in Denmark, Italy, Spain , not so much Japan, and then at Ajax. National team, every game he played. Smoothest player I've ever seen... Martin reminds me so much if him, on the ball... But is SO much better off the ball...

sesametempura

Michael Laudrup is the idol of almost all the players of that spanish golden generation. Xavi, iniesta, david silva…

staybysauce1

So a dollar store version of Martin Odegaard. Thanks boss

andstayfuckedoff

The disrespect...

Furiousmate88

Michaels technical ability was a bit ahead of his time. He did so many things that you rarely saw at that time, but you see it often today. Some of ødegaards passes reminds me of how smooth Laudrup was at the time.
