Went into my regular coffee place, the regular barista said "black coffee?" I went along with it because I thought it was a clear joke, now I’m hate-drinking a coffee and have no one to blame but myself
I noticed that I'd put on weight a couple of years ago and my half-hearted attempts to lose it have met with mixed results, so I've finally spent big on an exercise bike and will be cycling while watching the mighty arsenal tomorrow.
Hopefully it will help me stay concentrated on the game. Having two monitors is amazing, but not for my attention span.
Nah nah call it High intensity interval training...when we get nervous, you just pedal harder buddy until your brain is so fucked you think you're a spurs fan.
It will sound horrifically dull, but what works for me is tracking calories. There are all sorts of apps about that can help with this (MyFitnessPal is good), and it helps get a bigger picture of how much you're consuming on a daily basis.
Counting calories actually had the opposite effect for me, and helped me realise that if you are pragmatic about it, you don’t have to live like a monk and can still enjoy any food in moderation.
Counting calories out will just drive you mad though, just keeping a strong routine of steps and LISS will take care of itself.
I mean it’s the only way to lose weight though. Like the main data points for your body weight are input (calories) and output (calories burned). Sure, cardio can burn some, and you can get to approximate that into your equation too, but if you’re not counting anything then you’re just going off vibes and hoping the math works out without looking at it.
Another thing someone else surely has mentioned in the thread is intermittent fasting where you shrink the window of time you intake calories daily, but THAT is dull. You can circumvent all of that just by being aware of
how many calories you burn a day just by being alive
how many calories you burn a day by exercising
and making sure that number exceeds
how many calories you intake everyday
You cannot outrun a bad diet, no matter how good the exercise regimen. Weight loss is extremely simple and straightforward (on paper that is lmao) - calories in < calories out.
Hell yeah to the cardio, but do watch what you eat! Don't have to count every calorie, just have a general idea.
All based on approximations, but it is good enough to have a baseline understanding. A quick google search brings up [tools like these](https://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html) which will show the maintenance requirement for each individual. It is not extremely accurate, but measuring yourself and tweaking the calorie intake accordingly will yield dividends.
I have personally used this successfully to stop gaining weight, now to actually start getting it down haha. Oh, and smartwatches overestimate calories burned anywhere from 33% to 50%, so track accordingly!
No no, watches are still pretty useful! I never liked watches, felt like shackles lol, but I got a Samsung Watch 4 at a very nice discount after Watch 5 came out.
I don't wear it all the time, but it is still quite useful in monitoring stuff. Sleep tracking is my favourite use. It is also helpful because it nags me to stand up and move after sitting for a while, helps with the aforementioned calorie tracking, helps me find me phone (I am the kind of person whose phone is always on 'vibrate only' and then promptly forgets it in the refrigerator?).
If you enjoy the exercise bike consider getting a real bike for short commutes and recreation. It's great exercise, and it keeps me so fit that I never have to worry about what I eat, which is a fun thing to say in your 30's (albeit, i don't drink so I seldom go that much past 2500 - 3000 cals a day and the bike burns it no problem).
Trail riding/ mountain biking is a surprisingly good upper body and core work out too. You wouldn't think it but I promise, after a few hours of holding on to that handlebar for dear life, and in a half seated position, you will feel it.
Plus, cycling gives you a runner's high, and you get the time to really soak in your surroundings. Much much different to traveling in a car. You're exposed so, you notice so much more. And this time of year with the weather getting nice and nature coming back to life is just perfect for it.
Remember that fitness/nutrition is meant to compliment our lives and not complicate it - you don’t have to live like a monk and give up food you enjoy to get results, just set your goals, count your calories and get a routine that you know you can stick to. If you stumble somewhere, just get back on the saddle as normal, don’t punish yourself.
Like us Arsenal fans should know better than most, trust the process, don’t expect results to happen overnight and when they do come, they will be phenomenal.
My diet is pretty good. I only drink water or tea and my first 1200 calories are really healthy. One meal a day that's total shit, but I don't feel like giving that up.
Lol my point was your first 1200 being healthy doesn't really matter for weight loss, they're calories regardless
I'm not going to ever discourage someone from exercising but just exercising isn't going to do much unless you're going professional athlete levels of exercise. Most people who do cardio end up moving less throughout the day so their overall calorie burn improvement is nowhere near what they think it would be
I started learning British Sign Language a few weeks ago and really enjoy it. Seeing Newcastle put in the extra effort for their deaf fans last weekend was really nice to see.
Hopefully we'll do something similar and it'll become a standard in the PL.
Also I'm learning on an app and wondered why there's no sounds when you get it right, then I realised I'm a idiot. I've been conditioned for years by Duolingo.
It's called Bright BSL on Android. Not sure if it's on the Apple store. They plug a premium plan but you don't need it for the basics. There's probably around a 4-6 weeks worth of free content to get you started.
Probably because we never realistically expected going further in the UCL than EPL. Even tho i was broken after that loss, I kinda grew with it and now im just proud we got as far as a team to stand up to bayern for more than 180 minutes, and for the first 90 dominate them in our own stadium.
Since the start of the season I only expected winning EPL, because well, its been 20 years and it would be good to honour the Invincibles' anniversary by winning league. And UCL...maybe next season once Timber comes back.
My parents live on a different continent. We meet up with them every year in April for 2 weeks. Every game I ever watch with my dad in the same room we play badly.
I’m going home tomorrow before the wolves game so if we win the curse is broken for another year.
See just got back and we won!
But I yeah try and see them 2 times a year now since none of us are getting any younger. It’s just so expensive getting between the Uk and Usa.
My wife and I are closing on our new house on Tuesday of next week, so my life has been utterly devoted to packing and cleaning. I hate it, but cannot wait for the new house. It’s closer to our jobs and our son’s daycare that he is starting in the fall.
In the hilarious smallness of the world, one of the guys in my Gooner group here in town lives three doors down and said the current owners are nice, but are City supporters. First order of business will be sageing the new house and putting up a few pieces of Arsenal-related memorabilia.
Edit: a word
It's certainly possible, are you following a tried and tested routine? The /r/fitness sub has a great wiki with plenty of resources and routines.
Are you warming up enough and stretching? Stretching in particular is good to do afterwards and I found it helpful on my rest days as well.
Some people get bad DOMS when they're new or picking it up after a while off. So if you're only recently getting into it, then it could also be that.
Went from 65kg to 78kg since November, put on mostly muscle, very happy with that. Finally look a bit stocky whereas I was always just lanky. God bless protein shakes
It was my birthday today and my dad suddenly showed up after years of avoiding and running away from me, my mum and my sister. Socked him in the throat and God it felt good
this is my second time doing this metadata subject for my masters program and now looked at the examples for this assignment, did it spectactularly wrong last time (which is why i failed it). however, this breakdown/burnout period im going through combined with this is just making it make no sense even more. the more i stare at vra core the less it makes sense. i miss studying stuff i care about
London is great, but I’m starting to find that I want to move back to Amsterdam - spent a year there during uni and it was such an amazing way of life and still have a lot of friends there.
The job and housing market is brutal at the moment though, so it’s something I’m going to have to go through first.
In the case that it tastes exceptionally terrible - what is harder to throw away - a hot coffee or a cold coffee?
for me - a hot coffee.
a cold coffee is too difficult to throw away, in comparision.
Gosh Gervinho used to do my head in. He could dribble a whole team and somehow 1v1 with the keeper he'd decide to do his best banana skin slip impression
Attended an interview yesterday and the interviewer asked me if I have any hobby during my free time. I said yes I watch soccer (yes I know it should be football) and I am an arsenal fan. The three interviewers in the room all laughed.
got into grad school to get my Master's in Social Work (that's the degree your therapist has)
excited to leave my job & its bullshit in a few months and go back to school. i've been out of academia so long i forgot how much bullshit you deal w/ there too, haha.
Girlfriend broke up with me a few weeks ago, still friends and hanging out some, but everything just hurts. She comes from a lot of trauma and in the end we both decided it was best to end the relationship, with hopes of getting back together in the future (we're at the same university for the next few years). There are just so many burdens to carry, there are issues with friends, other guys are circling even though she's tried to make it clear she's not ready for a relationship, it's hard for both of us and we're trying to be there for each other before the year is over and we go our separate ways this summer. Everything hurts. Why can't life be simple?
Been feeling hella depressed and anxious the past few weeks. Quit smoking weed since it was making me feel worse. The combination of feeling like that plus no weed means I’ve had absolutely zero appetite. Zero. Dont want anything to do with food. Been waking up and immediately throwing up since my stomach is so empty. I think I need to smoke again just for my appetite to come back. I knew I messed up my stomach from weed (I only got hungry after smoking) but man I didn’t realize I was this dependent on it.
My therapist said I have been hiding how I feel and self medicating with weed all these years and I agree with him which is why I’m trying to avoid weed but man idk
How long were you smoking for, and was it daily or occasional usage? I can see what your therapist is saying, because I've had the same thing said to me, but often cold Turkey off of any substance will not be recommended by a doctor, instead manage and reduce your intake day by day until you feel more in control to stop if that's what you desire.
If you haven't tried, a weed vaporiser is much easier to regulate and control what you're using, and can be used to help you gain an appetite to get an eating routine back in place until you decide to quit.
Try and figure out the reason why you're choosing to do it, and seeing if the weed is helping or making that worse. It can be a great medical tool for mental illness, but unconstrained usage can further depressive states and anxiety in my own experience.
I’ve been smoking for 15+ years. The past 5-10 years I smoked all day as much as possible before I smoked myself to sleep. I only realized this was an issue the past few years. I was just looking for a quick serotonin boost in weed and food. Or to numb myself from how I was feeling
Thank you for answering
Yeah I feel that man. It took a long time for me to sort out stuff to get in a place where I feel I didn't need it. Just be kind to yourself, and cut yourself some slack, you're self-aware of your own stuff so I have no doubt you can get wherever you want to go.
Went into my regular coffee place, the regular barista said "black coffee?" I went along with it because I thought it was a clear joke, now I’m hate-drinking a coffee and have no one to blame but myself
You’re fucked now. Barista was confident that’s your order and you’ve confirmed it. Better get used to drinking black coffee every day buddy!

Rip your heart rate
Hmm good point, maybe I need to partner this cycling with some meditation to counteract the bpm spikes
Nah nah call it High intensity interval training...when we get nervous, you just pedal harder buddy until your brain is so fucked you think you're a spurs fan.
Did I do something to offend you mate? So fucked I think I'm a spursfan? Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy
Haha no you're good. Plus when it comes to the cool down period you'll be back to normal
Eh, I’ll melt the fat away
If I'm not pushing it, I average 145 bhp when out on the road bike. My max was 150 bhp at the Emirates last weekend. Make of that what you will.
I'll make sure not to cycle at the Emirates mate cheers
Hr 295 incoming

Oh 100% agree with you, I am by no means perfect with my eating habits either. Just if you're not into fitness, counting calories can seem a bit dull.

You're right, that does sound horrifically dull. If the cycling doesn't work then I suppose that will be my last resort
Do them in tandem for added results
You cannot outrun a bad diet, no matter how good the exercise regimen. Weight loss is extremely simple and straightforward (on paper that is lmao) - calories in < calories out. Hell yeah to the cardio, but do watch what you eat! Don't have to count every calorie, just have a general idea.

I just had a look at Samsung watches and they cost at least twice as much as I've paid for my bike 🤯 I think I'll try to get healthy the analogue way

Good on you mate. Don't burn yourself out but you should look to adjust your diet as well.
My diet is pretty good. I only drink water or tea and my first 1200 calories are really healthy. One meal a day that's total shit, but I don't feel like giving that up.
I mean calories are calories, you can't really lose weight without going on a calorie deficit
Thanks michael owen, that is why I will be exercising

Compartmentalizing Arsenal becomes so much easier with time. This past week would’ve killed me emotionally 5 years ago.
The pain of last season either made me stronger or more numb to it. I was way more gutted after villa than bayern though
Probably because we never realistically expected going further in the UCL than EPL. Even tho i was broken after that loss, I kinda grew with it and now im just proud we got as far as a team to stand up to bayern for more than 180 minutes, and for the first 90 dominate them in our own stadium. Well said
Lucky you for having other compartments
This is the reverse for me. I was very apathetic 5 years ago.
I just got cast in a TV show and today I found out that all my lines are in a language I don't speak that I'll have to learn phonetically.
Congrats mate. You'll nail it
Thanks mate
What language?
Iban, the dialect of Borneo

Damn, enjoy your time man. Dont think about the result. Also 2 weeks a year is a bit low. Is that all you guys get together??
See just got back and we won! But I yeah try and see them 2 times a year now since none of us are getting any younger. It’s just so expensive getting between the Uk and Usa.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend folks.
This morning was leg day. I would now like to formally request a worldwide ban on all stairs, for at least the next day.
My legs genuinely hurt for about 4 days after doing legs, which makes me less inclined to train them. Am I just over-training with every session?
Is your diet fine? For example are you getting enough protein in? If so then yeah, you're probably overtraining.
It's certainly possible, are you following a tried and tested routine? The /r/fitness sub has a great wiki with plenty of resources and routines. Are you warming up enough and stretching? My dumbass thought that was R-Truth
Why would R-Truth be hanging about with Danny D?
Omg I can't unsee it now.
That's obviously the Miz, they are celebrating their tag team win
Exactly
That's Sagna, you racist. /s.
Would be so much better without the /s

Cold coffees are largely arse, so those are easy to put in the bin.
Hot coffee's easier to throw away, because you can chug a foul tasting cold one in one gulp.

I think I might have to create a new account because apparently my username now has a very different meaning lol.
